ok ok, i know no HC requests, but?! - G Tablet General

As stated by the title, I know we are waiting for the Honeycomb source to be released before any Honeycomb roms are developed for the Gtab. But, and it's a big But!, Now that google has said they are delaying the release of the HC source are we going to see some Honeycomb SDK ports? Or are we going to wait until the true source is released? I don't really mind either way, it's just a question that is on my mind and I'm sure is on the mind of others here.

Your question has been answered before on several closed "honeycomb" threads during the release timeframe of Xoom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854632&highlight=honeycomb
If you do a search, you will find a lot of info.. In a couple of HC threads, the conversation got very heated between a few members and the dev.. it is why the mods decided to ban "honeycomb" thread. Did the mods say no honeycream thread too?
This thread is one of the HC classic.

While I think your question is valid and worth asking (although as indicated above, you probably could have found it by searching), The question I have is 'Did this deserve another thread?'. Clearly you knew posting new HC threads was a bad idea. Why not ask your question in the 'Official' HC thread?

Most new members are not familiar with the search.. plus, you cannot post a question to the official HC thread. You can send private question though.
I am with Dcon87 that it is also on my mind but I am just not going to ask.. Once a while, the Mod updated the official HC thread with update....
so, just be patience.. everyone!

Fair enough. I didn't realize the official thread was locked. Thought you could post to it.
As for any ports of the SDK, I don't think you will see anything on that front.
The SDK was compiled for the emulator (an ARM emulator). Thus, ports are showing up for phones/devices that run an ARM based chip. Being a Tegra device, that compilation won't run on our tablets.
You may see some renewed interest in trying to pull out certain APKs, but even that has the stumbling block of likely being dependent on the new framework and fragments API.
As much as I'd like to see HC in action on this tablet, and as ticked as I am at google for this move, I think we are basically 'stuck'. Without the source, you are basically pissing up rope

IBTL lol

Agree, without the source, it is hard for the dev to cook. I am following the Notion Ink hack forum.. and they basically said the same, the good news is that Notion Ink claimed that they are working on Honeycomb....
Just wondering will Viewsonic/malata send requests to google to get the honeycomb source? As I read it, tablet makers can make requests to access to the source as long as they are using it only on tablets.

Considering they just unloaded 10,000 GTabs on Woot and the retail channels are having a fire sale right now, I don't think Viewsonic will be doing anything related to decent software changes.

I think you are right. Viewsonic probably won't do anything to it but we may be surprised. I thought last update was the final one.. now, they are releasing another one with the lockscreen. who knows.. Back to Dec last year, the VP of Product marketing of Viewsonic answered some questions in this forum, and I "wish" he is back with some answers on the future of the gtab.. probably in my dream.. =P

Questions for kernel devs working on 30fps issue

Guys,
I've been following the Epson and Novatek threads and it looks like good progress is being made on the fps cap. After playing with my friends Droid Incredible and seeing how silky smooth swiping and games are compared to my Evo, and with lack of 4G in my area, I am considering canceling and returning my Evo in 2 days while I am within the 30 day window. I'm sure other non-devs are in this boat and would really appreciate knowing what confidence level the devs have that they can break the 30fps cap AND keep the camera working once the appropriate drivers/source is out there. In other words, based on the latest information does it appear that the hardware is able, but the software isn't willing (yet)?
FWIW, I have a 003 w/Novatek and it has otherwise been pretty solid. But without 4G, and with this irritation, it is worth it to me to return the device and try Sprint again in 3-6 months if the alternative is to get "stuck" with a device with these limits. As an original G1 owner I know how crappy it can be to have a limitation that caps the capability of an otherwise very capable device (negligible onboard memory was a problem from day 1).
Thanks for helping me and others who may have the same question.

One has nothing to do with the other. The camera will be working once HTC releases the source, and it appears they have broken the cap and are probably gonna tweak it little by little.
People stop posting these threads!
Also, yes. It will be fixed and still have camera, but it won't be until we get the real HTC source. There is nothing devs here can do to make them release it faster. It's entirely up to them, but once we get it then we can have a fully working kernel along with fully working AOSP builds.
others may have the same question, but they:
1. read forum rules
2. have common sense
3. use the search button
Admin, move this thread to Q&A please.
Should be in the Q&A
The only reason the camera breaks is because we have to use a custom kernel to remove the FPS cap(and overclock). The custom kernel doesn't have the drivers for the camera because HTC is currently breaking the law and not releasing the source code, once that is released many amazing things will happen with this phone, including but not limited to the cap being removed with the camera and other things working.
HTC's track record on this source code release issue is starting to become fairly worrisome. That said. Yes this should be in the Q&A but at the same time I think you guys need to chill out a bit. He's not just posting another one of those threads, and this one is worded concisely enough that should someone choose to answer it, maaaaybe they could just sticky it over in the Q&A forum and be done with it.
Just saying, reserve the smackdowns for the obvious infractions of laziness.
Oh and as much as we all say use the search, I think it is worth noting that the forums search feature sucks and often still leaves you hooting through fifty pages of the same post just being quoted by someone else but still showing up as it's own result.
I cant help but feel like the fact that with SO many threads going way over the 300 post mark, eventually someone is going to need to write/use something better than off the shelf forum software, or we will forever be stuck tilting at windmills in regards to the "use the search" issue.

Thanks for the consideration, Alcaron. I always love how the douches, most of whom have been here for about 3 years LESS than I have, scream "SEARCH" and "MOVE THIS TO Q&A" when, as you noted, the search here has its limitations and moving this to Q&A will GUARANTEE it won't get noticed and another person will follow right behind and ask the same question. Truth is, it is a legit question for devs and usually the crybabies aren't even qualified to answer dev questions anyway.
As you stated, HTC's delay in releasing the source is unacceptable and will probably cost them a RMA thanks to the censors who would rather squelch this discussion. Too bad, especially considering just how compelling the device would be if HTC would support the true wizards with this info.
Mods, move this, leave it, whatever you like, but I expect others want to understand what ffolkes and his peers think and it will be asked again.
The issue is posting this in the dev section, instead of the Q&A. That's what's inexcusable. Yes, the search function is subpar, but dammit at least re-post in the right section.
This keeps getting called "trivial" but the fact of the matter is when you see it 100 different times, the small annoyances add up to 1 big episode of rage! It's against the forum rules for a reason. Abide by them or leave.

The EVO even without 4G is superior to the Incredible in my opinion and we will have it fully unleashed very soon.

ROTFLMAO. "Abide by them or leave." Whatever, dude. Maybe you should take a chill pill - or leave yourself.
Again, at the end of the day if you can't handle these types of questions you are in for a lifetime of pain. This isn't a "how do I root my phone" question. This is a question, that in my opinion at least (and guess what, that matters at least as much as yours) should be here for two reasons:
1. it may actually get looked at by devs (versus in general) and
2. it is a legit dev question
Most of the 30fps threads have, at the moment, coalesced around three topics:
1. Which VPA settings give you the most FPS
2. Do we think the MDDI buffer has some hardware cap that is being fooled by some sort of RGB to MDDI bridge which is now either a) working great or b) a placebo effect, depending upon who you believe
3. How the various patches are effecting various hardware rev/panel combinations
At this point, without the source and the possibility of it not being released for months (see Hero), and based upon the discussions, I think it will be at least 3 months until we see a working 50-60fps solution, camera, and HDMI port solution - but I was giving devs a chance to agree or even disagree amongst themselves and to explain their position.
This is the last post I'll waste any time addressing the douches, if someone wants to contribute to the answer feel free to do so, and if you want to complain about the post then no one but the mods can stop you, but i won't perpetuate it.
You should return the device and get something else.
Wow. That all took an unexpected turn.
It's true that dev was the wrong spot to post, but oh well, get over it, they'll never learn..
Id keep it. Well I am, unless news of the epic comes verrrry quick.
Even then. Hard decision.
If you're willing to wait for a truly rewarding phone experience then hold out.

On the contrary, the custom kernel does have the drivers for the camera--both cameras actually. I spent about an hour working on the camera last night, and it appears the problem isn't really with the drivers, but we probably have the wrong GPIO tables for it, since we're using the same ones the Incredible uses. I'm not sure how we can get the right tables without the official source, but me and maejrep have been working on it.
We'll update the custom kernel thread if it gets fixed.

Ugh, the "something about my evo makes me mad so I'm going to get an <other phone>," threads get so old. Do it already, we don't need to hear about it. I personally like my EVO, I like being on Sprint with upgrades every year and good coverage and inexpensive monthly fees ($10 premium data addon be damned,) and I sure as heck know I don't want to lack those things and get tied into a 2-year contract with a $375 termination fee on Verizon or AT&T at the same time that said companies have started to tier data usage.

No point in being nasty either. I can't understand why Viewsonic would direct their customers to such a place whereas you get a nasty response when asking a valid question. Wouldn't it be better to address it on the front page of this thread?
He was nasty because you are cluttering up the development forum with pointless posts. This forum is for development not questions that have been asked 50 times already. It is getting old. don't post on development unless you have something to contribute to actual development.

Where is that written? Also, old or new, Viewsonic directed us here. Which I will be calling them about. The nasty attitudes are unnecessary. Mostly reflects badly on Viewsonic since they consider this site a valid resource for Viewsonic G Tablet users.
Perhaps, if you address it in a sticky thread then you could possibly alleviate the need for people to keep asking.

I don't know who you are, and neither do I care. Remember nobody here knows really anything about anyone else either.
That being said, some of us have our own high traffic websites and one mention of the unprofessional manner in which the "folks" on this site deals with other users could severely hurt the site traffic along with a few well place telephone calls.
The professional approach "would have been" to do a site PSA.
I can't see any reason why this site would release anything other than altered versions of the official Android OS. What would be in it for them to release the original as is?
Some users would have no use for this site. We bought Viewsonic for their brand name and reputation as a company. Not because of this website. So once some get their hands on an official copy of Honeycomb 3.0, traffic and need will go down.
That wouldn't have to happen if a different approach was taken. I see quite a few "snarky" responses to legitimate comments and concerns by Viewsonic purchasers. If you think we have to just take them you are wrong. On my site I would not dream of responding to my traffic in such a way, not if I expected them to come back.
Remember any website is only as good as there "last" high traffic web hits.

You are aware this site has nothing to do with Viewsonic, and the only reason they point you here is their own support/developers are 100% useless.
This is a forum used/moderated by the average person on the street, and we really don't have any interest in veiled threats.
You were flamed simply because you didnt even bother to search before asking a question, if you had you would see there are at least 5 other threads with EXACTLY the same question asked.
Search first, search second then ask a question if you want to avoid being flamed.

This is a common misconception about the development forum.
It's not for things talking about development.
It's for things you have developed.
IOW, the only time one should start a thread on that forum is when one has developed something, and wants to share it with the community.
Anyways, sorry for the derail.
Not trying to sound like an ass or anything.

In spite of Samsung's best efforts to bury the news by reporting it a couple of days before Christmas, Friday's disclosure that the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab won't get upgraded to Android 4.0 drew a lot of justified ire. Now the company seems to be backtracking like a champ, as reported by ajnews in Korea, by claiming that it will review the viability of updating those two devices in response to strong customer demand. While restating the difficulties of fitting its entire software footprint onto the Galaxy S and Tab's limited memory capacity, Samsung has been quoted as saying it'll investigate ways to try and make it work. We've reached out to Samsung for official comment on the matter and will update you as soon as we hear back.

[Q] Will the S2 Source Release Help Our Skyrockets?

I heard over on Android Authority that Samsung has release its JellyBean source code for the i1900. I know our phones have a different processor, so it's not going to work on our phones, but given that they share at least a name, should I be hopeful that there could be some goodness in there to help move our Skyrocket's along with JellyBean (e.g. CyanogenMod 10.1), or even hopes of an official JellyBean release from Samsung?

There is already a Samsung JB leak in Development forum, you should have taken a look there.

Should have done a search? I did, thanks. Searched for "jelly bean source". No hits. So I posted.
And a leaked *compiled* ROM does not equal source. Now it does answer my question about the Skyrocket getting Jelly Bean, and further implies there will eventually be a source delivery. That does not mean that the regular S2 Jelly Bean source available now can't offer a more immediate impact.
Also note that the UCLK4 thread in the development forum is slightly over one day old as of now. At the time I posted this thread, it was about 12 hours old. And the one in the General section was started after.
In fact, I saw the S2 news at AA much earlier yesterday but decided to wait to ask so others with more knowledge and experience could preemptively answer my question. But, via my search, I didn't find my answer.
So, yes, I agree my thread is now irrelevant. But at the time, it was hardly as clear as the smug replies in this thread suggest.
Sorry for my rudeness in response to yours. I know you guys have to put up with a lot of newbs. But the robotic and condescending dismissals are just as annoying to see over and over again, especially after I *did* do my due diligence.

I didn't mean anything harsh in my reply, but answered half of your question, a half that seemed to me the most important one (our phone having official Samsung JB).
To answer one more thing: the sources are good for some things, namely if your goal is to patch the new kernel to the old driver binaries (the kind of work that's necessary for old and non-supported phones to run the latest OS found on their latest siblings with the same chipset) - but if your goal is to run the full OS with official latest drivers that it's built to run with, without precompiled binaries the source is good for nothing. And the patching work is futile if the official release is a month-two away.

Help, please. Searched threads and couldnt find solution.

I have had the s3 since the release date a few months back and am quite satisfied so far. Ive been using android since the G1. Though the new ICS/JB builds are nice, I still like the feel of the old build.
Is it possible to revert back to the Android 1.5 Cupcake on my GS3? If so, how would I go about doing so....?*
Im rooted, unlocked bootloader, stock Rom, currently running ICS 4.0.4
Why you post here when you already posted this in the general? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35719549
Doesn't even belong here in the first place this a question belongs in q&a

Well sir, according to Merriam-Webster "General" means involving, relating to, or applicable to every member of a class, kind, or group. Which in this case, my question would fit the "general" guidlines.
According to Merriam-Webster "Development" is defined by the act or process of*developing*growth; progress. In this case, I would like to my phone to progress from the regression it has taken with these newer android builds.
We could argue all day and say what goes where and why, but this was my logic behind my reasoning to post in these sections.
I understand that the S3 was built on ICS, but dont see why its not able to run older versions of firmware like 1.5 cupcake. My analogy is like the PlayStation 3. It has capabilities to play ps2 and ps games. And brand new labtops have capabilities of running windows 95... In theory, cupcake should work on this phone.
What is preventing me from doing this? If someone could use a good analogy, I might be able to comprehend this situation from a different point of view.
Nice diss up there but first off when the ps3 and windows run older games, they run the latest OS and emulate the older core OS to run them. Therefore, you'd have to run ICS and emulate cupcake, unless of course someone will port it which I honestly can never see happening. The work it would take would not be worth the finished product

Also, just an FYI, development is where people post ROMs

This is about as close as you're going to get. The chances of it working are probably slim to nill, but thats why we have Odin!

To start off there are a ton of things that would need to be ported to work with cupcake. Could you load in on your phone? Possibly, but you would not have a full function phone (ie. data, sms, wifi, and possibly camera).
The easier route would be to request a Cupcake theme for ICS, which might already exist for custom launchers like ADW and GoLauncher.
please post in the correct forum.
try a theme or buy an older phone.

This should be in q and a but unless you do this port yourself it is not gonna happen. Cupcake was not meant to run on these kind of high end phones. It sounds like you just want the look and feel anyway so you should just look for themes. Android has progressed a lot since then and I can't imagine why you would want that but each to their own. Theming is the closest you're gonna get unless you do it yourself

Thanks for being a smartass and looking in the Merriam Webster for definitions. Really dude? Development is for RELEASES only, regardless of what the Dictionary says. And it would be pretty close to impossible to put a 3 yr old software on a phone that was made to have a locked bootloader. If you have nostalgia just go install a theme and a very old version of ADW.

Yeah but really this isn't the dictionary thus a a developing website it has it's guidelines to follow what goes where, I don't remember seeing that whatever the dictionary says follows on here maybe I should go look something up for you? Come on dude, just follow what xda says, unless you never cared to read them, instead of trying to flame me with stupid dictionary words.
PS3 was given the feature of backwards compability, it wasn't just something it could do out of the ordinary because not all types of PS3 do it. Your just go with fallacies that this this therefore this? I mean you gotta see not everything goes backwards.
