simultaneous voice and data ovet 3G:D - Thunderbolt General

we all know that this phone has simultaneous voice and data over 4 g but I also read that it has the capability over 3 g but was not advertised because the user experience may suffer. So I gave it a whirl yesterday and it worked great but I was also in area with full 3G coverage. Just nice to know of another advantage we have over other smart phones at verizon. I've never read of the bionic or charge to have this feature also

Yeah also it depends on your tower if it is upgraded to do that or not.

Voice & Data over 3G works where I live. I don't have 4G (yet) - but I was able to browse the internet at the same time as making a phone call. Love it!

Works for me also on a 3G network.

also works for me

Works for me also now my friends with EyePhone 4s got nothing on me

works in socal. #winning

Will do data and voice over 3g

Both phandroid and Droid life have confirmed that this phone will not only do data and voice over 4g but 3g as well. Yeah! Just another thing to be excited about

No. simultaneous data and voice is not possible over cdma. They are both wrong. What might happen is voice will go over cdma and data over lte or both will transmit over lte. If you live in an area without lte, you are out of luck.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
how is it possible?
since the new iPhone 4 will do it apperntly they have figured out a way to do it, and you guys only think its not possible because thats what verizon has aalways said, and ven if it doesnt, who the hell cares, who wants to talk and look at the web at the same time
What should work and should not and why (I work on the network)
Ok, I am an engineer working on VZW's network, as well as in the past worked on GSM stuff as well. The reason that VZW could not do voice and data at the same time is because CDMA voice, 1xRTT data, 2G voice, 3G voice, EVDO REV0 and REVA all use the same channel groupes. VZW uses channels 283, 242, 201, 160, 78, 37, and 1019 in the 800 A Band, and with Alltel Acquisition now has 466, 548, 589, and so fourth, the PCS spectrum is abundant too. The LTE is on 700 mhz so uses a different set of radios so could in theory run it at the same time as voice since it would use the other radios to do it. Thats the reason it can work but if they write the software to do it is another thing. They might not because of battery life, would be like running 2 phones off the same battery at the same time. The iPhone will not do it because it will not be LTE ;-)
You could be entirely right as I'm not an engineer for Verizon so I'm not sure, just going off of info based on what I believe I read on one of the android blogs. You can actually talk and surf at the same time. All you need is speakerphobe or headphones ans I wifi connection lol. But I'm pretty sure that anyone on these forums knows that;-)

I don't know how exactly, but I've been told that you will be able to do simultaneous voice and data on 3g but they are not advertising it because you can only use 1X data.

Fixed your quote for you, one word SVDO.
I wonder if they're doing VOIP trick so they are techinally only doing data alone.
There's nothing prevent HTC from directing the phone dialer through their own VOIP applicaiton.
Also, the iPhone on verizon will not be doing simultaneous voice/data.
So, this is like when you are talking to someone on the phone, you are able to look up stuff like on Maps and all that right?
If Its what I am thinking of..I am able to do that on my Eris(albeit, it is rooted..but..)

That's a pretty fancy trick. Run the voice call on the 1X and leave the EVDO open for the data...I like it.
I hate to tell u this but I can almost promise you that your Eris can only do it when your wifi is on. I have a rooted Eris in my hand running kaos froyo as we speak, it will NOT do it unless wifi is on.

You in the wrong forum by any chance? We're talking about the Thundebolt here not the Droid Eris.
He was probably referring to my post
and yes I know that.
Family Guy: I was referring to your post, I just had a huge argument with a Guy in the Eris forums about this exact issue. He insisted that kaos froyo would do both. I insisted that there Is nothing that kaos could do or anyone else to make data and voice work over 3g on any Verizon phone that is currently being sold. And he insisted that his Eris would. I asked him if his wifi was on, he insisted that wifi and 3g wouldn't run at the same time. Anyway, this went on for like 20 private messages and I finally agreed that he has the only Verizon EVER Has ever sold. It could be worth millions. Again, sorry if I sound like a ****. No harm intended. Can't wait for the ****ing thunderbolt.

Oh thats hilarious!
Yeah. You will see the Guy I ended up going through the argument with in one ofbthe kaos threads. It all started with him saying that his rooted Eris smoke his all his friends DInc's and lets be honest, if u have ever played with both, you know that's not an accurate statement. On a positive note, you guys check out some YouTube videos of the second Gen. Snapdragon processors, damn!!! They were smoking!!! There is a video on android forums or phone arena with the thunderbolt getting a 2150 with no task killer and that's pretty damn good. I know the entire stigma aelround benchmarks as I've been around here for a while(700+ post) but it takes a fast phone to get that without a "lagfix" synthetically driving up scores

The reason we are able to do it on 3G as well is because the Thunderbolt has two different antennas. One is for the LTE/3G and one is for the 1X/Text messaging. Because it has the two different ones that's why we will be able to talk and surf. The Bionic may be cancelled because the antennae is not working well with the tegra. And the Samsung Charge will only be able to talk and surf in a 4G area. If you are on 3G you won't be able to talk and surf. So it's a cool feature that hTc has right now. The information is based off of the review of the ThunderBolt below with a couple of bits from what I have been reading.

I just realized this yesterday, and it made me SO happy! I've got mad love for my T-Bolt right now!
blackmanx (Twitter's most popular Verizon network engineer) said it was because the Bolt uses SVDO instead of EVDO for it's 3G. This makes it possible to talk and surf at the same time over 3G. So the Bolt is only using the one radio when talking and surfing on 3G
As for 4G, LTE uses a separate radio, but LTE allows for this simultaneous function anyway
And no, the Verizon iPhone very much cannot use this functionality, nor can any other phone currently on Verizon's lineup. You need to go to a GSM network if you want this on any other phone when using 3G

So does this mean that our calls don't ever go through 3GEV or LTE, and always 1x?
Reason I ask, is in the 2 weeks that I had the TBolt, the clarity of my calls seem inferior compared to my nexus one on T-Mo 3G, like the person on the other end sounds muffled. Not sure about others, but thats been my experience so far.

A Question for any Charge owner

I am making the switch to Verizon this weekend (before the data cap is implemented) and want to confirm that you can make a call and surf data at the same time. If so, can it be done on 3g and 4g, one of them, or not at all.

Just tested my Charge on 4g and yes it can make calls/browse the web at the same time, it seems flawless as well, no lag in the call(tested with my house phone so i could hear the difference) and the browser didn't seem to stutter or slow down.
I'll test 3g for ya just let me figure out how to set it to 3g only... I'll get back to you
Thanks. I thought it was normal that most, if not all 3g phones could do both, but I read somewhere that the Charge couldn't. I thought that to be really weird.

Sadly it doesn't work on 3g haven't tested it on 4g, but I believe it doesn't have the same radio as per say the Thunderbolt(which will do dual voice and data on 3g).
Anyways hope that helps.
I guess I should have also asked if you are stock or running a custom ROM. There are two conflicting comments here. One said yes and the other says no.

Well you can check my sig, I'm definitely rooted and it works on 4g so far(haven't tested 3g) but I was checking out a bunch of reviews before I bought the phone and I remember one of them said it was capable of surfing the web while making calls so I'm fairly certain stock can do it, also when I was checking the kernel/ROM info none of them said "Added the ability to call/browse the web simultaneously" or something like that, if not it's incredibly easy to root, this was my first smartphone and I rooted it within the first 4 hours of getting the phone out of the box

I just got the droid charge 2 days ago, totally stock no root or anything, havent even got a new app yet. I can be on a call and surf the web and it works fine. 3g area
Setting the record straight:
The Charge will NOT do voice and data at the same time over 3G, unless you have wifi on.
The Charge WILL do voice and data at the same time over 4G.
Welcome to a CDMA network, only phone that can do Simultaneous Voice and Data over CDMA is the thunderbolt, every other phone can NOT do it iPhone, Android, WP7 doesn't matter. 4G allows you to do it because voice still goes over the 1x network, and data is coming over the LTE network. CDMA does not allow simultaneous sessions unless it is an SVDO-CDMA like the Thunderbolt is.
Interesting, thank you for the explanation.

Am I imagining things??

On several separate occasions I have been on the phone talking while surfing the web and running Google searches. All this while in 3g. Is it possible that Motorola has finally given us a cdma devise capable of simultaneous voice and data without need for 4g? If this is the case why has nobody mentioned it before. Am I the only one who has noticed this? Why was this not a main selling point at the Verizon store? Well, regardless of the answers to those questions I will say, "this phone is AWESOME"
I have been an androider with many different phones since the G1 on T-Mobile. Except for one month i made the the huge mistake of trying apple but i digress. I have also been rooting and romming since the G1. This is the first time that I have had a phone longer than a day without romming it. I have now had this phone a month and still have yet to rom it. I feel there is no need. I am getting 18hrs between charges and that's with screen on and streaming slacker radio in and out of 4g because I travel. Not a single phone that I have heard of or experienced can touch this phone on battery life or even come close for that matter. The build quality is amazing. The UI is amazing. The speed is amazing. The as of yet almost bug free android experience is amazing (only bug I have noticed is a slight lag in the keyboard while in landscape mode but, it always catches up. I type as though its not lagging at all). The display quality is amazing. Oh and by the way, after experiencing siri and all other voice activated apps. Moto voice commands is the best one ever. It actually understands what I'm saying. This is something I have known though since as far back as the bionic. The speed on this phone is amazing. The screen size on this phone is perfect. (IMO) the list of great things I can say about my experience over the last month with this device is almost endless. The main focus of this thread is for others to express their opinions of the phone and to acknowledge the fact that this phone is capable of simultaneous voice and data while in 3g.

HTC has been doing it since the unveiling of their 1st 4g phone. They do it by including two separate antennas. This is the first Motorola device to do it though. I just think it should have been talked about more. Sales guy didn't even tell me about it when I was torn between this or the gsiii.

I believe the EVO 4G was the first 4G phone ever and it was from HTC. It couldn't do data and voice while on 3G but it could while on 4G.
I'm almost certain that this has nothing to do with 3g/4g and more about the radios that are used. Similar to how the verizon iPhone 5 is incapable out the box of simultaneous voice and data because of how they utilized the radio.

I had a bionic. It was a piece of crap. It did simultaneous voice and data only in 4G mode not 3G. This I know for a fact. As far as the one who said that the epic 4G was incapable of this, yes you are right it was. I should have been more specific and pointed out that I was referring to Verizon only as I am not a sprint customer.

On a 3G CDMA network the only way to achieve simultaneous voice and data is by providing with two antennas so that while one is being utilized for voice the other can maintain data. There is no way to achieve this with only firmware (ex. Radio file) that is written to do so. You must have the second antenna as well as properly written firmware. The iPhone 5 is a different bowl of wax. The phone isn't capable of this even while connected via LTE because the firmware was written in such a way to prevent it even though LTE is natively designed to do so. So in closing it can be disabled solely with firmware on a capable network but, not enabled solely with firmware on an incapable network.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using xda premium
Wait a second, let me make sure I understand this correctly... You're saying the iphone5 can't talk and data at the same time? This was a huge selling point for previous iphones, why would they do away with it? Other than to save room in the device to make it smaller, I understand that, but you would think they would want to keep the phone technologically up-to-date (or at least up-to-date with the ancestor devices...)
I always knew Apple was a joke. This is just reason # I-Lost-Count.
iPhone 5 on GSM can do data and voice simultaneously. Only CDMA carriers like Verizon suffer from the problem.
Apple didn't want to put an extra antenna in it because they said it will mess with their design... so they left it out.

[Solved!] Slow 3G on my Moto G

I am absolutely in love with this phone but I am really bummed by the 3G data speeds I am getting. I have tested using the Speedtest app all over my city and I never seem to get more than 1Mbps. I just tested my wife's iPhone 4 in the same location as my Moto G and she got 5Mbps and above and I got 0.70Mbps on the Moto G. Both phones are Straight Talk. I really want to keep this phone but these speeds are a dealbreaker. Any ideas?
Edit: I stumbled upon another thread that mentioned that you can set the preferred network. Even though my notification has always shown 3G I never knew you could select between 2G and 3G in the preferred network settings. I selected 3G and boom 7.97Mbps. Way fast enough for my needs! I'm keepin' mah phone!
