Is it possible to get 4g on a non 4g phone, I was interested to know if has to do something with the radio, or do non 4g phones, just don't have the hardware to accomplish that task?
Yes its hardware dependent. Its the radio chip that's on the board has to have the frequencies for that carrier.

Yeah my buddy has a Captivate that he put a 4G modem on and he gets faster speeds sometimes, but I doubt it fully uses the capabilities of 4G.

If i were to flash my inspire 4g with CM7 rom and say flash the inspire 4g with a radio and ril from dhd, would that mean i am able to use the inspire 4g with the 3g frequency being used in europe and the rest of asia?
I understand that the 3g frequency used by at&t(850/1900) is different from the rest of the world, say singapore or france(2100) of course by flashing a dhd radio,i lose 4g connectivity but thats fine by me since i like experimenting.
i understand also that most htc phones are quad band and i4g's hardware is not that much different than dhd.
Is what i suggesting possible?or this is a hardware issue rather than a software issue.
The frequencies depends on the hardware

I have a rooted samsung Fascinate. I want to know if there is any app or anything that I can do to get it to recieve 4g from verizion. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I only ask because my town has 4g, but I only ever have 1-2 bars of 3g data service at any time. So if anybody knows if I can get 4g, or any way to get a better 3g signal.
Addt info: It is not any problem with my phone, most people in my town have terrible verizon 3g ever since they added 4g
nope its a radio and internal drivers thing.
No, Verizon 4G or LTE requires completely different hardware for the radio inside. The reason your service is suffering from the advent of 4G is due to Verizon converting existing 3G sites to 4G.
When this is done, 3G signal will depricate as there will be less 3G radios serving your zone.

if your phone can do manual prl updates look through the threads in my sig it might help you a lot
I would like to kno is the GSM or cdma version better I see the GSM version has more development, also aren't your 3g speeds faster then ours on sprint? Is it tru GSM unlocked is more unlocked then cdma? Is the ns4g able to wrk on another carrier

Are you asking which is better cellular phone technology, GSM or CDMA, or are you asking which version of the Nexus s is better, AT&T/Tmo versus Sprint?
GSM phones require a sim card to use. Whether or not the phone is unlocked depends on the phone and the carrier. You can get a Nexus that is locked or unlocked.
You are comparing two different types of speeds. Nexus S's on Tmo run on HSPA+ (is technically 3G) and run 4G on Sprint. Your experience also depends on your radio and the area you live in. T-mo's frequencies are generally not as good at building penetration.
NS4G's are CDMA and do not run with a sim card. I do not think you can unlock a CDMA phone, except through the carrier.
See then GSM is better cuz I can b unlocked to use with another carrier Verizon or Sprint would never go for that

Cdma passes signal better from tower to tower. If you're on GSM on a highway talking on the phone you know what I mean. However GSM on the other hand has great battery.

GSM is GSM/wcdma and all u gotta do is switch sims to use another fone as with cdma u have to call customer service

So while sprint has "4g".... The reality is that wimax has a harder time going through walls so the speeds you will be left with alot of the time is sprints slow 3g and wimax drains the battery faster.... Tmo 3g in most areas seems to be around 3mb down and 1.5mb up and that is without any extra hit to the battery.... Of course milage may vary.. You could live in an area that is not so good for one or the other... My opinion tho is to go with the GSM version mainly cause you could see close to the wimax speeds depending on your area

I should say that wimax has a harder time going through walls because of the frequency its on,(2500mhz vs 1700mhz for Tmo 3g)
The lower the freq the longer it carries and the better it penetrates walls

I tried searching but I couldn't find anything that would help me to be the wiser. What differs the 4G version and the 3G version <- which I have?
Is it possible to turn a 3G to a 4G? Is it just drivers or physical hardware that differs them?
Kind Regards,
Jolaren
its just an icon on the sensation...... besides the band differences on the couple versions out there they are all the same!
but on a realistic level, there is hardware that makes the difference from a 'TRUE' 4G to a 3G device
'h' is 3g
So my European bought Sensation won't be able to run 4G ever?

Well. You see, the T-Mobile 4G isn't even 4G its actually 3G they just call it 4G.. So "H" is basically "4G" for T-Mobile users. So don't worry, you're not missing out on anything. It's just an icon
All current 4G is not true 4G. But it is marketed as such. That's not the question here.
3g can do up to about 3mbs on average. It uses a different radio spectrum than 4G phones.
For example my sensation hits 5mbs while my wifes 3g Samsung Galaxy S can only reach 300kps to 600kps when compared side by side. It will depend on your proximity to the tower, but my real world tests were done side by side so hopefully that helps you. Don't take my advice though, go to your nearest store and run the comparison yourself!
Hope this helps!
So i just purchased my Sensation 4G about two weeks ago.. I live in an area where 4g i guess is somewhat new (Rancho Cucamonga, CA).. Well i get 4g not very fast but i get it.. although it seems to switch to 4G to 2G a lot in an area where 4G is strong. I went back and got a new sim card and that seemed to help a bit but my question is... Why am i not getting 3G? 2G is old news... on the coverage map i dont even see any 2G... If im in an area where i dont get 4G why cant i get 3G?
+1

Because 4G is really only faster 3G.

The sensation 4g doesn't show the difference between 4g and 3g. Even when you have 3g, it will always say 4g. I don't know why HTC did that, I would like to know when I'm not in a 4g area, but that's how they did it. When you drop down to edge, it will say 2g, but UTMS/HSPA and HSPA+ is shown as 4g.
T-Mobile's so called 4G is just 3.5G. Basically a better version of 3G but just set at a higher frequency meaning that you won't be likely to get "4G" if your in a very crowded area. I used to have 4G all the time with my MyTouch 4G but I guess it probably has something to do with the phone.
Thats really weird. I guess T-Mobile doesn't really have the greatest 4G now do they?

HSPA+ is technically 4G, but there's no more 3g to fall back to.

So is every other carriers 4G. True 4G is faster than your local area networks are right now! So it's all a joke.
but HSPA+ can do 50Mbs and the Sensation can do 14Mbs according to T-Mobile.
LTE can do 50Mbs but in real world delivers about 12Mbs that I've tested. HSPA+ does about 5 to 6Mbps. So it's all a sham and depends on factors like tower saturation, proximity to the tower, etc. Really it's luck of the draw with HSPA+...
The difference is that LTE uses the 3g radio so LTE devices fall back to that and display 3g. With the Sensation it just knows it's running on HSPA/HSPA+ and throws it all in the 4g category. I wish they would come up with a way to detect regular HSPA/3g and display it, but they probably won't.
And since the 3G's radio is easier to get, real 4G LTE is way more common than HSPA+.
