Hi all,
I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S, and I am wondering if you guys would know anything fun to do with a Samsung Jet S8000.
I installed Android from a project called JetDroid, and its pretty nice to have it on the phone, even if it isnt functional as a phone while in Android mode. I'm just wondering if there are any other similar projects out there.
I did a search for similar topics, but it seems that the Jet was a really unpopular phone as I cant find much info about it online.
Well, it was very limited (just a basic phone that happened to run Java2E). Not as smart as its advertising considering it was advertised as "Smater than a smartphone". But the base hardware is pretty nice.
Thank in advance for any replies
Nice to see other s8000 user here.
I still use my Jet today and im still waiting for usable Jetdroid version.
This device was very good for its time and the SoC plus RAM it as can run Android better than the current low end Android devices out there. Its a shame that Samsung dind at least upgrade the OS on the Jet to Bada OS.
Also samy drop support (updates) for it too soon imo.
As a multimedia device it is still pretty usefull...

Hey. Yeah I still use my jet as my second phone when abroad.
I saw a lower end android device ( vodafone smart -comparing 2008 hardware to 2011) and even thought the jet has a hugely unoptimised android install, still ran more smoothly in terms of gui compared to the vodafone smart... but also crashes a lot and was hard to install.
Pity Samsung rarely support their devices which are more than 2 years old. Even now my sgs is not going to get an official ICS update. (Not concerned as I have not used a stock Samsung firmware on a ling time).

Samy drop the suport for theyr products too soon
The Jet as a better SoC than my wife Ideos X3 (huawei) and a longuer battery life (running the stock OS).
Also the Jet does video call out of the box and the low end Android devices do not (and i cant understand why because many of them have front cameras).
i've tried Jetdroid but its not a viable option yet... :'(

I just got an email claiming a vast improvement to jetdroid based on cm7. I haven't tested it yet but I am very excited!

Hi Folks
I've just been given a broken s8000,
The digitizer has failed (screen still works fine). I've not physically opened it up yet so It could of just come loose, either way they're about £5 off ebay so It will be functioning again and
it does look like a very promising device to have a play around with. like has been mentioned, better than some current low end devices.
For anyone who's interested I've just done spent an hour get up to speed on development of the JetDroid project, because lets be honest, That's where the fun's at.
I first found http://code.google.com/p/jetdroid/ which made it looks like the project has been abandoned. This google code project yielded better results.
There's probably an "executive" overview of the project some that I've missed I did also notice that HTC Sense had been ported to It, I don't know whether they ported the bloat with it as well. Lol
Still no sim access from what I can gather as of they Status update on 2012-01-24 Is that correct?
Yes that's right. It works OK as an android device but no phone function at all yet.
When I get home, I will link the jetdroid forums. From what I can tell, everything is happening behind the scenes so there isn't much on the lines of public updates.
Sent from my GT-I9000 running CM9 (ICS 4.0.4) using XDA premium app
Ay, I found the forums and gathered that myself, The activity is intermittent but the lastest kernel was released in April so it's still current.
Although I keep reading that JetDroid isn't finished, they've been at it 2 years.
I think i'll ask the devs the technicalities of the sim issue. I'll at least have a stab at it. I'll probably fail and fail hard but I could do with knowing a bit more about simcard internals.
I guess it has something to do with how the jet handles the sim card. From my reading about it, its done in a propriety way, which makes sense cause the whole system was written around a touch wizard complete os.
So its likely going to need lots of reverse engineering. Much like the ril module on an i9000 was reverse engineered in order to get ril functions to work due to lack of sources.
I personally have no ability when it comes to this type if hardware coding. If the jet has more users interested in installing android, I think it would have already happened.
I definitely look forward for whatever breakthrough might happen.

I recently updated the firmware on my Jet. I used a guide here http://darkforestgroup.com/forum/index.php/topic,7464.0.html
I installed the Firmware using the guide there and a program called Multiloader_V5.62 which I downloaded from the site.
I had to google to find the correct firmware because many of the download links on the site no longer work and a couple I tried kept forcing shutting the phone down when on a call I'm now using version S8000XPJA1 which is working fine. I found it by googling for it. Beware of 'dodgy' down load sites though
Also I'm in the UK and I think the country you are in affects which firmware you should use so check first.
Goodluck
Anyone try to get the app working on our phone? I loaded it and tried to change the build file to the HTC Vision but the app wouldnt let me stream any video.
I tried the same but didn't work... Might be sometime with blur preventing from Netflix actually identifying it as an HTC... maybe I'm completely wrong but I tried both the leaked netflix app that came out a while ago and the newest one with no luck. What I did notice was when i edited the build prop, when i went into the marketplace it would actually find the netflix app but when i changed it back to show as a Moto Bravo it would no longer show it in the marketplace
The Netflix app is NOT compatible with the stock Bravo. Bandroid said there was a way around this, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Netflix
If you have CM7 or CM9 the netflix app works with no problems now. I think by now it should work with our stock rom but I haven't tried it.

Sadly its not working on cm9 now with the new video drivers for making work full hardware acceleration on our phones (defy, bravo, milestone and more)
Lets hope that devs take problem and solve it.

Well if you do remember CM9 hasen't been the most friendly rom for our little Bravo to begin with. That's why i've just stuck with one of the early CM7's. It's probably had vast improvements since the one I installed but it is a trooper. Has force feeding Netflix been tried yet or marking it as a system app?

Its not yet perfect, not friendly even for defy users, but our phone have a great potencial to do many things possible. As you know if our phone would not have that locked bootloader, it was just like some other new phone, thanks to the great procesor it has.
But despite locked boot, the phone is now working really great, it just need some tweaks or something to run a little bit faster, but now everything is working really great, I love the rom now, I hope devs make it a little bit faster before going to JB, but I think it will because with every new nightly the rom is smoother and thats why now Im using it alredy as my primary rom.
I recomend you now to install it again, I hope netflix works sometime in the future, my netflix account has some problems, when it is ready Im going to install multiboot manager to use GB to see it.
Anyone pull the apk and try it on gingerbread?
+1 would really like to see this ported to my phone
I think its too soon, but probably in the next days/hours
I personally would love to try i ton mi ICSless atrix
Gingerbread and Honeycomb tested, don't work. Error at start the install of apk when the pack is analyzed.
Are you going to release it for the rest of androids?
I don't know if there would be any copyright issues. But maybe someone could upload the apk and somebody is able to diasable the os-check at the beginning of the installation...

It's not that the it needs an OS-check - Google have used APIs that are only available in Ice Cream Sandwich. Therefore, it would be a lot of work to get it to work on Gingerbread.
Ok, thanks for the information.
EDIT:
I think the process of gingerbread being no longer supported by new software has started

Indeed. I did not think that Google will be the first to bully its Gingerbread users.
Should have known better though. From their track record of navigation (Beta) not being available in my country for unfathomable reasons, I don't expect Chrome to be officially supported on Gingerbread anytime soon. And of course, I don't expect any comments on this from Google either.
If GB users are being discontinued so early then Google must have been possessed. Considering that ICS hasn't even been pushed to most of the devices that are getting it yet that leaves the majority of users still on GB without choice.
To cut ties with the OS so quickly is kind of like counting chickens, don't you think?
no chrome for ginger
ok now i see even a darker future for my atrix now that google has motorola, if it wont even support their own "old" OS.
They make this big deal about Chrome Beta being out so I go to install it; first on my CM7 Nook Color, and then my rooted Tbolt, only to find out it's for ICS only. Just how many device models are currently running ICS, three ir four? That's one heck of a small beta!!

Off topic: While I do see a reason for small disappointment, I think it's early to start worrying about google no longer supporting gingerbread. After all, this is one beta program. When there will be 3 beta programs and 1-2 official programs that do nor run on our gingerbread devices, then it will be time to start whining.
On topic: I am confirming that chrome beta does not work on my xperia arc.. (but that will change in march/april, am I right sony? )
I'd be willing to bet that Google don't like this decision either.
But if they can only make Chrome for Android using the Ice Cream Sandwich APIs, what else can they do? If they wanted to support Gingerbread, we likely wouldn't have it all.
To the guy at the top of this page: Google could, might and should revolutionize Motorola, for the better.
It isn't Google's fault that Chrome isn't on Gingerbread, it's the fact that it hasn't got the correct APIs.

Betas are supposed to be small, that's the point of them. This is semi-closed, semi-open beta.
Well, I think Google made this just for ICS so that there would be less users that test this beta. Once it is a more mature product, I'm sure they'll make it backwards compatible.
Agree with above, I think they'll get it straightened out on ICS then remove a couple of features and put it onto GB. They want to release alongside ICS, as most developers would. Release on the newest software first, and then go back for the people who can't have that software.
...At least that's how I see it
I download a version from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487294
It's working fine with my SGS2 (i9100). All the comments seem to suggest that this is not the version Google released and that it should be 16mb, not 2mb.
Apparently its a rebranded 'Miren' browser but I have to say it's really fast and chrome-like! I like it so much over firefox and opera that I have replaced my stock browser with it!!
The link on the website you forwarded us is dead :-(
So I hope it is coming out soon for gingerbread!

Just wondering why android 4.0 (ICS) had these notable bugs as a major release? like VPN connection issues, text corruption (jumbles up and looks like hieroglyphics) and maybe more (add any you know and I'll update this post)
I mean what did they do on Google before releasing a milestone android version?
P.s: I remember one of the most significant features announced at the press event on October 2011 in Hong Kong was 'unlock by face recognition'. But where is it now? I couldn't find it on any ICS AOSP ROM or Jelly Bean ROM installed on my phone. Was it only for galaxy nexus was shown at the Honh Kong event?
I have that feature on my EVO 3d

It could be faked by a photo and also it didn't work well for older devices where the front camera had a low resolution, hence most rom's removed it.

Does Google keep it on Jelly Bean yet? Or Google removed it on later ICS updates too itself?
All my devices which have been 5 have all been on Ice Cream Sandwich and I had no problems whatsoever by far the best version of Android before jelly bean I have facial recognition on all of them if it was removed it was because the custom ROM that you were on remove it it's a standard feature and Ice Cream Sandwich.

Jelly bean actually enhanced the face recognition feature. You have to blink to unlock the phone. Obviously you can't do that with a picture of your face.

I suppose Face unlock has still to evolve a lot, i mean there could be numerous scenarios / lightning conditions etc. But like NIMBAH mentioned blink to unlock is a good addition
Never had problems in lighting

Depends on what your phone is. Face recognition requries front camera mate.
Anyway, I believe the 4.x series is a massive success. It solves the defragmental issue, improves UI in terms of look and feels and smoothness significantly, while maintains Android's strength of openess and growth.
The VPN thing is minor, and it is ignorant to consider this as a Android's fiasco. Meanwhile, text corruption is caused by your phone's kernel, hence you can't blame it on Google. I sense that you use some legacy phone like Galaxy Y and have bad impression on ICS.
In my opinion Android 4.0 was the best move Google has made yet. Jellybean is nice and all, but ICS made the big changes. Fully HWA ui, deeper account integration with most services and just beautiful to work with. Android has never been this tweakable before. As far as bugs are concerned, I've never encountered any of the problems the OP names.
ICS is beautiful for me.
I'd compare it to Windows 7 whereas Gingerbread was like Vista to me.
Anyways, the launch of ICS really shows the true versatility and strength of Android. It's smoother, easier to use, and more minimalistic than any other version of Android out there. As for the facial recognition feature, it works perfectly fine on CM10 for me. I've used it on CM9 as well.
VPN is definitely an issue, but seeing as I don't use it, it didn't matter to me.
ICS isn't always perfectly functioning on older devices though. So i'd assume that you're running an older device with legacy hardware that just doesn't function properly with ICS (probably an issue porting code and software to the device). I remember trying ICS on my Dad's G2x and it was a nightmare! So I can understand where you're coming from.

Dammit why can't I just remember those days I was on gingerbread (2.3) and its functionality to compare with ICS as a big Change? Should I flash a 2.3 version again and stay 1week or more on it? Is it the only remained way to realize smoothness improvements?

Your main issue was that fact you were using a ported version of the OS with hacked up drivers and files. There will always be issues when you use these types of OS distros. I also used the same device as you but recently switched and let me tell you the desire HD doesn't do it justice. The devs do great work but there is only so much they can do without the proper files.

That's true zelendel, but as far as I know text corruption was as AOSP issue that was present in stock ICS on the Galaxy Nexus too. Haven't seen it since JellyBean so I think it has been fixed in AOSP. Also, development for the DHD has come a long way since you left especially since the release of 3.0.xx kernel by Virtuous Team. The forum has really come back to life. The codefireX 4.2.1 ROM and its 3.0.xx KangBang kernel are pretty awesome, and the phone has never performed better.

Howdy guys,
I'm curious if anyone knows whether Netflix works on the Xoom using CM9 or 10. I ask because I own an Atrix which seems to be remarkably similar hardware, and I know the CM9 and presumably 10 roms will not playback Netflix video due to Nvidia not releasing the necessary drivers. Because of that I keep it on CM 7. Since they're both Tegra 2, well....? I'm ready to flash over the stock ICS rom, but if that means losing Netflix I might have to reconsider. Would that also mean no hardware video acceleration as well?
I've searched high and low and found one post that suggested someone was running Netflix fine, but I couldn't infer which specific rom he was using. Any thoughts, folks?

Thanks for the tip--always meant to try some different roms. I did go ahead and flash CM10 since I already had it downloaded and I'm pleased to report that Netflix does in fact run fine. Makes me wonder why jokersax's Atrix build doesn't run it, though I haven't tested the later versions. Well, it runs but there is just a black screen when video should be playing.
