Hi all,
I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S, and I am wondering if you guys would know anything fun to do with a Samsung Jet S8000.
I installed Android from a project called JetDroid, and its pretty nice to have it on the phone, even if it isnt functional as a phone while in Android mode. I'm just wondering if there are any other similar projects out there.
I did a search for similar topics, but it seems that the Jet was a really unpopular phone as I cant find much info about it online.
Well, it was very limited (just a basic phone that happened to run Java2E). Not as smart as its advertising considering it was advertised as "Smater than a smartphone". But the base hardware is pretty nice.
Thank in advance for any replies
Nice to see other s8000 user here.
I still use my Jet today and im still waiting for usable Jetdroid version.
This device was very good for its time and the SoC plus RAM it as can run Android better than the current low end Android devices out there. Its a shame that Samsung dind at least upgrade the OS on the Jet to Bada OS.
Also samy drop support (updates) for it too soon imo.
As a multimedia device it is still pretty usefull...

Hey. Yeah I still use my jet as my second phone when abroad.
I saw a lower end android device ( vodafone smart -comparing 2008 hardware to 2011) and even thought the jet has a hugely unoptimised android install, still ran more smoothly in terms of gui compared to the vodafone smart... but also crashes a lot and was hard to install.
Pity Samsung rarely support their devices which are more than 2 years old. Even now my sgs is not going to get an official ICS update. (Not concerned as I have not used a stock Samsung firmware on a ling time).

The Jet as a better SoC than my wife Ideos X3 (huawei) and a longuer battery life (running the stock OS).
Also the Jet does video call out of the box and the low end Android devices do not (and i cant understand why because many of them have front cameras).
i've tried Jetdroid but its not a viable option yet... :'(

I just got an email claiming a vast improvement to jetdroid based on cm7. I haven't tested it yet but I am very excited!

Hi Folks
I've just been given a broken s8000,
The digitizer has failed (screen still works fine). I've not physically opened it up yet so It could of just come loose, either way they're about £5 off ebay so It will be functioning again and
it does look like a very promising device to have a play around with. like has been mentioned, better than some current low end devices.
For anyone who's interested I've just done spent an hour get up to speed on development of the JetDroid project, because lets be honest, That's where the fun's at.
I first found http://code.google.com/p/jetdroid/ which made it looks like the project has been abandoned. This google code project yielded better results.
There's probably an "executive" overview of the project some that I've missed I did also notice that HTC Sense had been ported to It, I don't know whether they ported the bloat with it as well. Lol
Still no sim access from what I can gather as of they Status update on 2012-01-24 Is that correct?
Yes that's right. It works OK as an android device but no phone function at all yet.
When I get home, I will link the jetdroid forums. From what I can tell, everything is happening behind the scenes so there isn't much on the lines of public updates.
Sent from my GT-I9000 running CM9 (ICS 4.0.4) using XDA premium app
Ay, I found the forums and gathered that myself, The activity is intermittent but the lastest kernel was released in April so it's still current.
Although I keep reading that JetDroid isn't finished, they've been at it 2 years.
I think i'll ask the devs the technicalities of the sim issue. I'll at least have a stab at it. I'll probably fail and fail hard but I could do with knowing a bit more about simcard internals.
I guess it has something to do with how the jet handles the sim card. From my reading about it, its done in a propriety way, which makes sense cause the whole system was written around a touch wizard complete os.
So its likely going to need lots of reverse engineering. Much like the ril module on an i9000 was reverse engineered in order to get ril functions to work due to lack of sources.
I personally have no ability when it comes to this type if hardware coding. If the jet has more users interested in installing android, I think it would have already happened.
I definitely look forward for whatever breakthrough might happen.

I recently updated the firmware on my Jet. I used a guide here http://darkforestgroup.com/forum/index.php/topic,7464.0.html
I installed the Firmware using the guide there and a program called Multiloader_V5.62 which I downloaded from the site.
I had to google to find the correct firmware because many of the download links on the site no longer work and a couple I tried kept forcing shutting the phone down when on a call I'm now using version S8000XPJA1 which is working fine. I found it by googling for it. Beware of 'dodgy' down load sites though
Also I'm in the UK and I think the country you are in affects which firmware you should use so check first.
Goodluck

I haven't seem any vanilla android roms for this phone so what's wrong with it? I planned on getting one but not so sure anymore.

It's not a single problem with this device , but the stock OS Froyo came out in 2008 so it's pretty old , but samsung modified it to the way they want it , don't get me wrong there's no vanilla device's but there are modified froyo device's that are great , we don't have gingerbread yet .
So why is it so hard to port a gingerbread Tom? I'm not a developer or anything just wondering
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Porting Gingerbread is difficult because that would require rewriting all of the specially designed drivers for the sidekick for the GB kernel.
Vanilla ports are difficult because they rely on a stock styled framework, which due to the way the drivers were written, is very different on the sidekick.
you would have to rewrite alot of thing's including driver's that's why where using froyo .
Oh ok...so even vanilla froyo isn't gonna happen?

I'm working on CM6, my hangup is with the camera/camcorder driver system, the way they defined camera parts is very bizarre. AOSP froyo/CM6 are on-again-off-again projects for me, they will just require more work than other phones have in the past (or maybe I'm just not experienced in CM, who knows).
Hmm interesting. Well thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm just gonna get the g2. Even though I love you guys for your work I feel like the g2 is gonna have a lot more options especially with ics. Again thanks.

Why would they code this phone differently than the other Galaxy S series phones? Is it the keyboard? I'm beginning to wonder if Samsung knew what they were doing when they built this phone...it's TM's last of the 4G Galaxy phones to be upgraded to GB, and when I lurk the TM forums it's just nothing but negativity towards it. I'm glad I root/ROM. It saved me from the massive fit I would have thrown at Magenta.
And while I'm here, vick, how's the SGS4G code looking? Is it as "close" to the SK as you thought it was?
Well yes and no, the sgs4g has the same processor, so that portion of the kernel was done for me, but the screen driver wasn't yet built for GB, and would require significant tweaking. I have been working on finals around here for classes, hopefully I'll find some time shortly to continue working on it.
Open Etna has basiclly dropped the developing for this phone.
Do you know any other developers?
I'm currently using GB 2.3.5, but it's not that smooth.
Thanks!
Hello,
Are you still lurking arround here?
My GW620 is running Cyanogenmod 7, and is doing great with CPU max ~620 Mhz or something. This actualy made me change my mind about buying another handset.
When I saw someone was working on a ICS mod for our old EVE, it brought me joy and hope that we might still use it for some longer time.
Also, he/those who were working on ICS for this hanset also succeded, but dropped the port in a Beta version that has some issues (camera, signal, partial networking). I have also tried to read/undestand/fix issues. Unfortunately I am but a noob in this.
Maybe we could ask the good guys to take another look at this port, now that the driver sources are available. It would be great to use a stable ICS on this device, would bring EVE back to every-day life for many.

Two years ago, I got my first real taste of android from a friend who had a Motorola droid 2. I knew I wanted to get an android phone, and being on AT&T, the Captivate was the best phone out there. I tested it out inside the store and knew it was the phone for me. Having done my research, I knew about Samsung's pretty terrible update history which made me nervous, but I decided to go for it anyway.
Needless to say, of course samsung managed to take nearly a year to update the captovate, released on 2.1 eclair, to 2.2 froyo. I was very annoyed with samsung and started researching ways to get the update sooner. I read about rooting, but I decided against it because things seemed to work fine on the phone.
It took a while to get the courage, but I finally rooted my captivate after I was on froyo. I was surprised at how easy it was (thank you no locked bootloaders ). I started reading of roms and had no idea what they were, and the more I read about them the more confused I became with terms like kernels and modems. By the time gingerbread came out by samsung, I still hadn't learned enough about roms and simply updated through Kies Mini. I had to go through the rooting process again, and learned how to use Odin and flashed my first kernel (although I was clueless what it was).
Eventually I found that ics was released and developed on xda and knew I wanted to get it. I finally flashed my first rom after figuring out how to get cwm on the cappy. I was surprised to be getting ics so soon - especially after samsung officially said the cappy wouldn't get the update. Either samsung is just lazy or stupid if they thought the cappy couldn't handle ics. I learned about kernels and cwm and roms and eventually felt comfortable with it all for once.
Now, running the new JellyBean, I can say I am truly impressed with how far this this phone has made it. My iPod touch 2g was basically obsolete after a year and a half to 2 years. It lost support for apps and ios updates. But this wicked phone doesn't stop. It's running JellyBean, and thanks to the awesome devs on XDA, I'm sure it will get the next few android updates!

Same here in terms learning about android, roms, kernels, etc. Since I use the capy for work I will be using this phone for a while. Things are working so well since the Mod9 July 23rd nightly that I am afraid of going on to Jelly Bean, IT's not so much the bugs but the fact that it is working so smoothy. :good:
You said it. I love my cappy. It's definitely an awesome phone. It may not have the latest hardware, but it still proves reliable with what it has.
This is such a nice phone. The devs make sure it is always up to date so it always has the latest roms. Not to mention that it also performs great when it comes to gaming so that is a plus for gamers like me.
This is the longest time I've ever owned one phone and now that I'm running jelly bean I don't see the need to upgrade for a while
That's my main argument against IOS, what iphone will let you obtain the latest version of IOS without having to buy a brand new phone?
Cappy
I upgraded from my Nokia N95 to a captivate about two weeks ago. I got the phone via Rogers for $0.01 with a 1 year plan (Their super 6GB plan) figuring I'd use it about as much as I used my N95. I've never been so happy to be so wrong!
Since then I've installed a buncha roms just messing about. Finally decided on Skanky+Devil Kernel with a overclock to1.4Ghz (oc mostly because I'm addicted to SPB 3d Shell) and I have to say - I'm totally impressed. It performs flawlessly and I'm pleased with the battery life - though I can't seem to put it down for more than a couple minutes all day long.
I was also super happy to find all the community support and information that helped me learn my way around installing mods, rooting, etc. I did so much research (mainly because I'm a cheap bastard) and I couldn't find another phone (with in the deal Rogers had) that had so many different choices for Rom's. I love jellybean and coming off a Symbian OS (N95) you can imagine how this phone has blown my mind. Android as a whole is just so awesome and I thank god I turned a blind eye to everyone I know including family members about going on a iPhone.
I recommend this phone as I can see it has at least a year or two of life before I even have to think about getting a new phone - and even then, the decision to upgrade would be purely out of my addiction to electronics.
+1 for Samsung.
+2 for a awesome community, Rom support and continue'd development for this phone.
+1 go almost everything posted so far. I really had the new Device itch recently but I nutted up and threw miui v4 on here and Wow. Why bother. Love this thing.

I've had an OptT for about a year now and well a biddy of mine is selling me a sgs...I'm not exactly new to the whole rooting and custom roms ordeal but I am new to this forum...I've seen quite a few good looking roms in the dev section (things I can't wait to try out) . I've taken a quick look thru the stickies so I hope no one feels as if I'm completely new to android considering I've done development for the G1 back in 2008-2010...anyways what all do I need in order to get the sgs4g rooted and enjoying these roms? Has anyone used gingerbreak to root there sgs4g or is everyone using one click? I haven't taken a look at gsmarena for the exact specs of the phone but I'm assuming its an armv7 because I'm coming from an armv6 device. Also the LG OptT does have a few good ICSs roms even an unofficial build of jellybean but since the device runs an armv6 processor we are missing omx forecast. Is the sgs4g missing anything? That's about all I can think of right now bit ill be scanning this forum and I hope to hear some good feedback b4 I decide to buy my buddies phone

Use "Auto" in SuperOneClick. If it ever freezes up DO NOT TOUCH! Little Zerglings are rushing inside your phone to root it.
We also have ICS and we have an upcoming major ICS update which will fix allot of issues pertaining things such as battery life.
As it is easy to hack the SGS4G it is also easy to brick, so read instructions. If you don't understand anything, read the forums, search, find out more and if you do find out your answer maybe you'll find more things than you actually need which is good. Do not ask a question unless you are sure of it. LG is different from Samsung so don't assume that because they're both android doesn't mean they're the same thing.
And also welcome to the SGS4G forums*
I took a look at gmsarena and I saw the specs..only 512mb ram with 1gb internal storage,I figured it was alittle more than that but switching from my current phone to the sgs4g is an upgrade..I have prepaid by the way,I'm guessing theres no difference....I appreciate the quick response though....
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
This phone is not exactly brickable..
Its one of the most durable phones on the market actually.
Its easy to "soft brick" but that's easily recoverable as well
Ha! This phone is as good as the newer phones. But with lower specs.
I might get the new Galaxy Nexus for the newest official Google updates. If bhundven releases the majorly updated ICS, I might keep my SGS4G for a few weeks to taste the new ICS flavor and after I get bored with it, I might sell it, either in stock form or a custom ROM.
are you sure it's the Samsung galaxy s 4g t959v?
----------------------------------------------
If helped don't be afraid to hit the thanks button it doesn't bite lol
That's great because its easy as hell to brick the LG optimus T..I bricked 2 of em...we have basebands that improve signal ie..v10 for early froyo builds and v20 series for GB and up.one thing I've noticed is there doesn't seem to be any official cm7 builds but I haven't explored every thread in the forum either (kinda hard to do on just my phone alone). Than again I don't have a computer either...I took a look at the wiki page and its full of information that is somewhat overwhelming considering its easy as hell to root my current device back in the day rooting phones was a bit more tedious but now people have created applications for that sorta thing? Another question,I've seen the phone has the option for TV out bit I've seen quite a few remarks on ICS development threads that TV out isn't working. For my current phone, development is slow considering we are on an outdated processor (armv6)...I just wanna make sure that my new phone (sgs4g) hasn't seen any slowed progress in development because I would like to start developing again...hearing about ODIN isn't my first trail,I e just never used it....currently I'm on popdog123's oxygen gb rom,I was using an ICS rom but true development for ICS on the LG Optimus T is slowly coming to a halt and were starting to see alot more themed gingerbread roms. Were also missing omx codecs for HD video playback. Its an adreno220 so for a while we never thought we would have ICS..Panorama doesn't work for LG Optimus T on ICS roms atleaat not entirely and considering it has low memory, performance does lag..I'm an advanced user with LG but completely new to Samsung devices,LG is ****ty so I'm hoping there are no barriers with the phone im about to purchase, eventually I'd like to settle for a more advanced phone but the sgs4g is a huge update considering I've never had a phone with more than 600mhtz processor either. If all of this is in any speculation of moronic, please feel free to to close thread but I have a good feeling that I've placed it in the right forum, just trying to get some good info b4 I dish out hard earned money on a slightly better phone...any suggestions on where to begin (from others other than the user who replied first, please tell me)

First you have to have access to a computer to root this thing.
We have unofficial cm7 & cm9 and
ATM we do not have TV out working on ics builds.
We have 2 one-click programs that work well for this device.
1- gremlin remover (the one i use which is an oden program)
2-heimdall one-click (never used it personally)
Both programs are also used to bring you back to stock rooted state if and when you soft brick your device.
So there's no way I can root the phone unless I had a computer with two programs you speak of? I was under the assumption that I could use superoneclick or gingerbreak to root

You still need a computer for super one click. But it is much easier to flash a custom kernel and recovery via heimdall one clicks. With SoC it takes about 10-15 minutes, with a heimdall one click its a matter of 5 minutes if you are already on Gingerbread. If not then its about 15 mintues.
That's odd, not that I don't believe you but I never used a computer to root a phone with super one click, maybe that's because I have a LG phone...I did use super one click once and gingerbreak twice
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
Unfortunately thereseems to be no way out without a computer
Also you don't need both programs I mentioned.....just one or the other
Ugh.....well maybe I can attempt to use my sisters computer....who knows.....so is there an updated thread with rooting instructions because after viewing the wiki page there just seems to be so many different ways of rooting bit all of em are a year old or older...
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
My prefered choice is to go to the dev thread and dl gremlin remover extract it and follow just the last instructions
TV Out does work on the Aries build.
OP: Look at the guide in the first link of my signature.
I have flashed custom roms to a crap ton of phones. I've gone from a Optimus V (same exact thing on a different network), all the way up to a galaxy s2 ( hercules) with, a G1, motorola backflip, motorola triumph, samsung vibrant, galaxy s 4g, lg g2x, samsung blaze, and an htc sensation and I'm sure I'm missing a few and I can say with %100 confidence the galaxy s 4g was the biggest pain in the A.
Going from the optimus to the 4g is a deceptively large jump. You're getting twice the processing power and a much better over all phone. The screen will make you weep with joy after using the optimus for so long.
I'd recommend using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765 right off the bat and then just immediately flashing from the recovery that that installs to an ics build.
I tried other methods and got stuck in a recovery loop that drove me crazy and then I found that link and it fixed all my problems and let me flash to cm9 right from it. When you flash cm9 it will update the recovery and then you have to flash it again right after a reboot.
I tossed Google Now on there and for all major appearances it acts a lot like JB. I think google now is the single major noticeable difference between ics and jb besides the saposed speed increases.
So in short, yes get the phone if you can get it for a good price. Then install ICS right away unless battery life is a huge deal breaker. If it is then there's some great GB builds, but I personally prefer the cm9 nightlies.

Source is now being pushed to the AOSP trees. Of course, when it is all there we will begin the process of figuring out what changed, needs work, and/or is no longer feasible or needed.*
We are not in a rush to get 4.4 builds out. We are going to continue the process of working on CM 10.2 M1 - getting that out the door and onto your devices. Further, we will 'finish' the 10.2 code base, similar to what we did with 10.1.*
As a friendly reminder, please don't flood us with requests for 4.4 - we all want new and shiny things, but we will not do so at the expense of abandoning the hard work our contributors have put into 10.2.*
Final note, a lot of folks are reading into the "512mb" item on the release notes. No, this does not mean a sudden resurrection of older hardware, there are dependencies beyond the RAM (and CM has enforced that minimum since ICS)."

How long did it take them to release a JB update after it was first introduced?
I have no interest in a CM ROM full of bugs and things that don't work.

Given that we never got upgraded to 4.2 or 4.3 by T-mobile/Samsung, I kinda doubt we'll be getting an official 4.4. And our CM rom, which has been built for us by a couple of people working for free, currently has fewer bugs than the official ROMs.

4.2 and 4.3 were minor updates with no name change. JB was a major update and they did update to it.
4.4 KitKat being a major update, I've got my fingers crossed considering the wide range of devices that it's being planned for.
Was just hoping to see if there was any news on a KK update for this model.
CM is fun to play with and all, but it's not something I would trust on an everyday phone.
I use CM as a daily driver every day, and have been doing so since 10.2 became CyanogenMod official - everything just works. Now I'm not one of those people who demands a LOT of my phone, but I use it in the course of doing my job daily and it performs better, and more efficiently (with regards to battery consumption) than it did on the debloated stock rom, so much so that I deleted my Nandroid of that setup.

I'm not sure if I fall into the category of demanding alot from my phone, but if there are issues like, Wifi and BT can't be on at the same time, that's not good enough. That's a serious issue. So if I forget to turn one of them off, stuff stops working? That's not okay...
I want my camera to work, for videos and photos. I want the phone to do everything the hardware is supposed to do.

Awesome! And you want that for free? You don't seem to appreciate a lot the effort that other people are putting into this...
The wifi/bluetooth issue isn't that bad. It only falls apart when WiFi is on and connected to a 2.4GHz access point, and bluetooth is on and connected to a bluetooth device. If you have an N wifi access point that operates at 5Ghz, you can just connect to that instead of the 2.4Ghz node and then the two play nice. It's what I do.

I would do this if I had a 5GHz AP, but what I'm saying is that I don't want to have to worry about stuff like that.

I don't want anything for free, except a stock KitKat update from T-Mobile/Samsung for the hardware I paid for... At no point did I say I was interested in CM. I've been explaining why I'm not, the whole time.
I started this thread to find out how long historically after the release of a new OS, does it usually take Samsung/T-Mobile to release an OTA?

Normally only after the Samsung high-end phones get the update and they are just barely getting Android 4.3. It also depends if they decide to update this phone at all. I have been asking t-mobile and Samsung that and they keep blaming each other or referring me to the forum for the phone on there websites.

I guess Windows has spoiled me, because I don't understand how it's so hard to port Android to each device.
AMD or Intel, they both use the same instruction set, so they work on any x86/x64 processor, and then you install drivers for your hardware peripherals.
Shouldn't Android run on any ARM processor, and then just have drivers that need to be plugged into it for each component of the phone to work?
Apparently it's a lot more complicated than that, but why...

A lot of the complexity comes from the manufacturers of the SoCs not opening up the workings of their drivers to the wider world that makes porting to new devices, and to new versions of Android so difficult. Things work on one kernel, or one interface, and that's it, and we have no way of tweaking it to work in other ways. Back to the subject at hand. I personally suspect that the Relay will get no official update to KitKat. The Relay is over a year old, T-Mobile has been trying to dump it since 2013 began, and they are the only retailer. The 4.1.2 Jelly Bean updates were rolling out to the then mainline Samsung phones within a week of the Relay's release in September 2012, and we didn't get our update (which frankly is a broken PoS, ESPECIALLY when held up against any CM build for the Relay) until March or April of '13, so expect another 6 months before we MIGHT (and likely won't) get an official 4.3 update.
Looks like coding for CM 11 has started. Check out @CyanogenMod's Tweet: https://twitter.com/CyanogenMod/status/397817644650205185

Ah k I see. The hardware vendors are mostly to blame it seems.
I may try a stable CM11 if that ever sees the light of day, but I won't hold my breath.
I've heard about the official JB ROM being problematic, so I plan to stay on ICS the phone originally shipped with.
I'm just glad to be getting rid of my Droid3 and Gingerbread.

True, there have been some bugs. However, I use the official nightly of cm10.2 as a daily driver. I'd rather put up with the MINOR issues that are left (hardware is stable for the most part) than have a manufacturer ROM. IMHO, the stock ROM that comes with the phone is usually full of crap bloat ware that I don't use and takes up space, and a UI that is SEVERELY limited in customization.
Also, the more people participate and report problems, the faster it takes TeamApex to fix and push out. At least team apex RESPONDS to their users. As mentioned before, it can take as long as 6-8 months after an android release for the manufacturer to roll out an update...still full of crap ware that's NOT used and cannot be uninstalled without root privileges or botching up the UI further.
These people who work tirelessly to provide to us, the end user, an updated version of Android, do so out of their own free will, and don't get a penny. These devs are here to proudly share what they have created, and I applaud and give my utmost respect to them.
You don't wanna install aftermarket firmware? Don't want to aid in bug reporting? Fine, put up with the crap that the manufacturer pushes onto you. Plus, Samsung & T-Mobile don't get any more of your hard earn dollars rolling out an Android update for our year-old device. They'd rather you dump it and buy the latest phone. THAT'S THEIR BUSINESS MODEL! So they have no interest in rushing an update to something as "old" as the Relay.
If you want JB or KK and are unwilling to wait for & install after-market firmware, I suggest you pony up the dough and buy a nexus 5. Better still, learn how to dev and make your own version of JB or KK for the Relay. That's the beauty of open source.
Your rant and *****ing about when "they are going to develop Kit Kat" makes you come across as arrogant, snobbish, and child-like.
Sorry for MY ranting, but it's unappreciative asshats like andre that just piss me off.
