Finally! Netflix IS finally coming to Android

We knew this would be phone specific due to Netflix wanting to ensure content restrictions were in place. The good news, it will be more chip dependent and phones with Snapdragon processors will be first.

I think an OS would have to have at least some attempt at security measures in place before that would happen...

I'm pretty sure the evo would qualify with it A8 type but too bad htc does not use the newer A9 that would make video playback as good as the iPhone 4 with it's high res screen and does this mean you will need 4g to stream the videos.

Well now unfortunately I just read at Engadget that only the newest Snapdragon chips, not even shipping in any phones yet, would have the capability for Netflix.
Poo Poo on Netflix, Google, and Qualcomm. As usual, the only care about selling NEW phones and could give a crap about anything already shipped.

Welcome to android.

for some reason DRM doesn't bother me when its coming from netflix. Probably because 7.99 a month for streaming is totally reasonable whereas $1-3 per episode of downloadable content is absolutely ridiculous.

Netflix is awesome but it doesnt work on my country.

I just listened on Cnet podcast that only next gen snapdragon chips will work, and they aren't shipping until early 2012!!! They also said that it seemed fishy since the iPhone already has it and the chip in the iPhone is not unusual. This is BS, Netflix is drinking the Apple Juice.

Even if Netflix was available, I doubt my phone would even have the horsepower to run it (moto droid 1, unrooted), so I guess they are just trying to make sure it is a positive experience for those users. That, or they are trying to avoid the fragmentation issue, or only available in gingerbread or later...
I would rather wait until I upgrade my phone to make sure the app works as good as possible.

I have playon.tv on my desktop to stream stuff to my roku but they came out with an android app in the market and it allows you to watch netflix and hulu on your android device, assuming you let the desktop app run.
From what i understand, the android app goes to your actual pc where it gets the videos and converts it to an android compatible stream. I tried it and it worked fine. Not a free app but you can try the trial.

No NETFLIX for Thunderbolt?

I just saw a video on Engadget stating that The netflix app need PRE-INSTALLED keys on a snapdragon chip. And if thee keys arent installed by OEM you cant play netflix on the phone.
Way to go Android!!
I guess iphone has had the keys for a year now! Wow Steve Jobs has these companys by the balls!
Fragmentation sux!!! Now im second guessing getting the thunderbolt.

The TB isn't even out yet so don't make assumptions, besides I'm sure it still possible in the long run

Check the video on engadget. Also the app is months away. So it 100% the keys arent installed. The guy in the video clearly states that the HTC EVO cant do Netflix!

The app not being out yet has nothing to do with the keys being installed or not. Qualcom has stated that there chips will support Netflix, not sure where you are getting that the keys will "100% not be installed".
Also the chip in the EVO is completely different from the one in the TB. The TB has the 2nd Gen SnapDragon. So the EVO not being able to do Netflix has nothing to do with the TB being able to do it or not.

The problem with Android is it may be less secure, you know with people hacking apps and flash, help we have hulu for free on Android because of it so maybe netflix is a bit weary

I remember a quote saying that qualcomm chips would be the first to see Netflix on android. I imagine it's possible that they've been installing the required keys on the latest processors, but that kind of forward-thinking benevolence doesn't seem very realistic, unfortunately.

I would think though that they have been talking about this since it was in development, this has probably been in development for a year or two at least. I don't think Netfix is going to release an app for android without the phones to support it. That would be horrible for business, you would want the most amount of people possible to be able to use your product.

Its the fragmentation and Androids unwillingness to protect The DEV's products with DRM and such

What is the big issue with hulu and netflix? Surely there are alternate places to get your TV show fix since we have flash enabled, right?

i am on the iphone 4 but looking to get the thunderbolt or bionic and this is one of the reasons i dont want to switch yet i know its a small reason but i'd rather love the phone than like it

According to the spec sheet, I picked up today from Verizon, VOD will include Blockbuster.

Netflix only requires DRM security on the chipset which the TB has. However, I dont think Froyo supports DRM as the DRM SDK/API is only available on Gingerbread and Honeycomb. I dont know if there's a software work-around for this though. I'd expect the TB to have Gingerbread by summer and Netflix is still a few months out from release anyhow... plenty of time...

Actually i think netflix streams a video........blockbuster app downloads it then plays it. I had it on my droid x....you pay per flick..... its not a monthly thing.... Complete garbage and the wait was horrible.

CHOPES: That's not the issue. Absolutely there are other places which are...dubious at best. The issue is that Android (meaning Google) doesn't want to stand up to the MPAA who are putting pressure on Netflix to make sure the environment is locked down against all us "thieves" out there. ;-)
It's the same attitude that linux users, myself included, have to battle all the time. Just because we choose to use an OS that's not there's and some people have busted their copy protection that means all of us will do that.
I'd blame delays in the software development as much as on the handset development. I would sure hope that ANY 4G phone would be capable of streaming Netflix eventually even if they currently aren't.

I would agree that once the software is sorted out the TB oughta be able to do it. this article http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/16/lg-revolution-dumps-tegra-2-chooses-1ghz-snapdragon-msm8655-ins/ says that lg used the Revolution as their phone to demo Netflix, AND it is using the exact same Snapdragon (MSM8655) that's in the Thunderbolt, so it seems to me that the Thunderbolt should have the DRM stuff in the chipset too .

1) This isn't just a phone, "it's your phone after your next phone" -- couldnt resist, sorry....
2) Some people come in here and laugh at people who want to play games on their "phone" and say that's what a PSP or DS is for....
Really, it isn't just a "phone" or everyone here, including you, would own a standard flip phone. We buy and pay for these phones to get the MOST that we can out of them. We want a do-it-all phone... or at least the best that current tech can provide.
10 years ago, people were paying $200+ for portable 4-5" TV players.
With all your posts, I cant believe you'd come crashing into this thread so harsh-like.

Its all about DRM in the chips. Rumor has it HTC will be he first to get it. Cause qualcomm chips support the DRM.

Eh... gotta wonder... I mean the initial reason they didn't do it is because android has little to no security on anything so within a week of release there'd be an app to download the movies off of netflix and keep them or something... securities really haven't improved.

Except that it's actually a fully-functional OS. Anything that you can do on Ubuntu, you will now be able to do on your phone. This gets us much closer to having a truly pocket-sized computing device.

Pretty cool. Only issue I had was it was incompatible with some programs and some drivers I needed were funky or I would have stayed on Ubuntu instead of jumping back to win 7. Keep up the good work!

Canonical says the "code is available for end users" though it will require quite some expertise to pull it off. I assume the biggest challenge is getting X to work natively with the phone, but if they can do it, and the code is available, I'm sure it's only a matter of time until someone on this forum gets it working, and boy am I excited! I want this now!
I have yet to see anyone with the code though.

With Atrix, you'll need their Motorola's "Web top" to run it, but with this, u just need only a TV with HDMI supported to turn your TV to a desktop PC, but still there is some limited though.
According to their site
"so it is easy to integrate into current production roadmaps. The hardware requirements are straightforward and, with a broad range of ARM and x86 hardware supported, it can realistically be added to phones already in development."
It's clearly there is something to do during development process before launching the phone. but I still hope someone can find a way to put this on previous devices too.

I have seen Ubuntu (and its derivatives) run just fine on a computer with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM. It will run OpenOffice just fine, Thunderbird just fine, Chrome just fine, and synaptic (package manager) just fine. No, you won't have all the processing power of a real desktop system but it will be plenty for doing light work (word processing, email, web browsing, maybe light photo editing in GIMP). It will be far more useful than Motorola's little webtop experiment.
And it won't just be a larger display for a mobile OS - it will be a fully functional desktop Linux OS, and completely hacker friendly. This is an exciting prospect!

I want this right now, but I don't have a dual core phone :/ Hopefully by the time my upgrade comes around at the beginning of next year, this will be the norm!

3. There's this concept phone "Nexphone" running "Ubuntu for Android". They're trying to make a prototype with money from Indiegogo: www.indiegogo.com/nexphone but i guess the crowd won't pay them 1 mil. dollars to pull it off.

Ubuntu will pull this off. I'm just not sure how successful it will be.
In any event, I'll be installing it as I run Ubuntu systems anyway.

Eventually yes. Phones are getting more powerful too. Quadcores are just starting to come out now.

It is not coming out for the nexus Canonical just used the phone to demo its OS. They are planning to release the source code for devs to play with. They are also planing To sale ubuntu smartphones soon.

I don't think there will be a need to port the device as it seems like it will able to run on all devices. I wouldn't call Ubuntu for android smartphones an OS until they officially release it as it seems more like something that runs along side android and allows the user to use the docked phone as a PC. Even on the Ubuntu website they state
Newer multi-core processors are up to the job, and Ubuntu is the killer app for that hot hardware. It’s the must-have feature for late-2012 high-end Android phones.

Even on their website they refer to whatever they are releasing as an app. It appears that Ubuntu for our phones will be more like a multi-tool with the ability to do a TON of stuff, like some sort of super app.

It would be nice to be able to finally compile kernels on the device itself and ditch the need for a 'real' computer altogether.

Well super app or not I think it will be cool to run at least for a few days.

In interviews they made it clear it is far from ready with a lot of core functionality still missing. Also if you watch the videos of hands-on it is pretty slow and lags.

Agreed. It is far from release, and I doubt we will ever see it on an S3. I wouldn't even expect to see an official device until next year.

I agree with OaklandZoo. Ubuntu on a phone sounds great but with the first phones not coming out until next year I don't think it will ever make it to the S3.
