I flashed the full 2.3.3 rom so it replaced the radio and bootloader. I flashed cwm recovery but when I try to boot into recovery I get the triangle with the !. I can boot into cwm recovery thru fastboot but not via stock recovery. My phone is rooted all my other programs that require root work fine. I read somewhere a few days ago about someone having a similar issue but I couldnt find the same thread.
You have to rename install-recovery.sh to something else so that cwm will stick and not go back to stock
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Boot your phone normally and download rommanager from the market and buy root explorer. Go into root explorer and find the folder "etc" inside it is a file called "install-recovery.sh". Delete it. Go into to rom manager and flash recovery.
For reference these instructions are in every rooting thread. Please read and search before posting next time also don't post a question in one thread then start a new one with the same question right after.

Since I am on 2.3.3 I did follow the instructions in 2 other threads and the process did not work. Prior to 2.3.3 I never had to rename a file in the etc folder. As I stated I did search for a previous thread but was unable to find it, that's why I asked. I do appreciate you taking the time to post an answer.

The only previous iteration of Gingerbread that did not include the etc/install-recovery.sh file was 2.3 - the file was added in 2.3.1 and the change has been necessary since then.
You say a process "did not work" what process are you referring to? The whole rooting process or just the renaming of the file? Assuming it is a the later and not the former, you need to either do it via ADB (and I'm too lazy to type all of those commands out) or through the app Root Explorer. You need to be able to remount the file system as R/W (read/write) from R/O (read only) and only Root explorer or ADB lets you do that.

I have this ROM: Inspire 4g Stock ROM Optimized--Root, Deodex, zip-aligned, HSUPA, non-market ap....
Is there an easy way to kill the AT&T boot animation when it starts up? I like the stock rom, and I like all the crapware has been removed, but the AT&T Rethink Possible silly animation on this ROM drives me nuts. Any way to remove it?
thanks!
Bella, this thread will likely be moved as it's a question and not development. As your other thread was moved.
Second, it's in System/customize/resource. I wouldn't recommend deleting though, replace it with something else. Loots of boot options on XDA.

OOPS! Sorry I didn't mean to post in here again... my bad. Apologies to the mods.
Can you give me a link to what boot animations I can easily replace it with?
Also, I think related, any way to get rid of the reference to AT&T in the app store? I hate knowing this is an AT&T phone, hehe

Check in the themes and apps sections, they're literally everywhere. Yes you can get rid of the at&t reference in the market but it requires a lot of editing in the build.prop. There was an extra step too but I forget...

Anyone know exactly what edits to the prop file are needed to de-AT&T the Android Market?

Having a little difficulty applying these. If I power down, then press POWER and VOL DOWN to boot into recovery, do I have to wipe or clear cache or just apply zip or how do they work?
Thanks!
Mudknot made it easy for us. In that thread he linked to, download the bootanimation you want from the list that IS flashable through cwm. Boot into clockwork and choose to install zip from SD card. Find the bootanimation zip, select it and then answer yes to the "are you sure" question.

If your using ginger bread then it won't work.. If your using froyo all you will need to do is flash it. You don't want to do a full wipe because it will erase everything. Cache and Devlik are entirely up to you
It won't work on gingerbread because I haven't had time to flash gingerbread, and update the update script.

Just to make sure your using the correct one. The bootanimation.zip files will not flash through cwm. If you are trying to flash them use the ones that say flashable through cwm should be post Number 4. If you want to manually do it. You are going to need a root explorer (ie. super manager, es file explorer, root explorer) you will need to make sure root path is selected and that you have the build mounted as R/W. Copy the bootanimation.zip you want to your sd card (do not unpack it), and copy it with root explorer. From there you are going to want to go into your build (rootpath) and go to data>local>, then you are going to want to past it, agree to overwrite the current bootanimation.zip. Then do a full reboot.

I tried the latter and it didn't work. I'd already tried to flash with the flashable one, so after that didn't work I tried the non flashable, and copied it to that directory, but it didn't change the animation. I'm using the TPC Inspire Stock Rom and even when I followed the above process I'm getting the annoying big TPC boot animation.
I wish I could get around it :-(
Give me a few minutes Ill see what I can do.
I'm currently not able to flash the rom, but I am going to unpack it and take a look see if I can figure out whats up with it.
Do me a favor, in root explorer go to system>customize>resources and tell me if you see ATT_bootanimation.zip.

This is what I did and worked perfectly. But I allready had KD1 which I recomend you get. Download the recovery and update.zip and put both of them on the root of your sd card. Then get root explorer from the market. Open root explorer and go down to sdcard. In the sd card you are gonna find the recovery file you placed in there. Your long press it and its gomma say copy. Copy that and press back button and then your at the main page of root explorer again. Its gonna say paste and cancle at.the bottom but dont press anything yet. You go all the way down to system and go into it and then into /bin. In /bin your gonna press the mount r~w button at the top right which allows you to paste the file. You press paste at bottom left and its gonna ask if you want to overwrite say yes.(if it didnt ask you overwrite that either means the file you downloaded was renamed.or there was a (2) or (3) on it if you downloaded various times. Just take the ending out so its.just.recovery)
Now back out to homescreen of your phone.and if you have kd1 you can get into recovery from quickboot if not then turn off your phone and hold powerbutton and both volume keys while the phones turning on normally it will go to a bluish screen with an android.(recovery) here you click reinstall packages and your done

issue solved by formatting the SDcard
so I formatted mt sdcard and the managed to get into CWM.
I hava another question:
now every time I want to go into CWM I should do the same procedure?
I mean put the update.zip in the root of the sdcard->go to recovery->reinstall apps?

2) what about all my apps+data/contacts/sms...? will it erase them?what backup should I do?
I just rooted my tmobile samsung galaxy s 4g phone. I am trying to do new ROM for it. I downloaded the update file, tried to to reboot in recovery mode. It keeps giving me error messages. I am new to this and really need help figuring this out. How else can I get new ROM on my phone?
If you want to get on gingerbread, follow my GB starter pack guide. It's in my signature. Don't forget to check out audiophile ftw or valhalla since those are the main GB roms right now.
If you really wanted to though, you could stay on the stock rom if you skip the CWM rom installation step and just do the busybox_installer step.

You say you downloaded the update.zip file but you do not mention the other file you need. The modded recovery.bin. That needs to be pushed in system/bin in order for the update.zip to work.
Did you also download and apply the modded recovery.bin? You need both files.

Where do I get the mooded recovery bin file? Thank you in advace.
If your attempting to get cwm through krylon360's cwm final thread then both the update.zip and the modded recovery file are there.

So do I download these files on my computer, hook my sd card up the computer and push them onto the sd card, or download them on my phone? Thank you.
Download them to your computer. Move them to your SD card. Leave update.zip on root of SD card. Use a file explorer app such as super manager to push the modified recovery.bin to the folder system/bin. Make sure your file explorer app is set r/w. Then boot into recovery and hit reinstall packages. You should boot into cwm recovery.

Where in that quote does it say to extract the update zip and place it anywhere except the root of your sd card ?
You just place the zip file itself not extracted on your sd card and don't ever do anything with it, don't flash it don't extract it.

When you get to the 3e recovery you need to select re install packages to enter cwm. The other option is to Odin flash the latest Bali kernel.
i never knew that downloading and moving around 2 files could be so hard for so many people.
Click on the Bali + CWM link in my signature for the easy to follow Odin instructions.
I'll ignore the snarky comments and thank the poster for the hint to reinstall packages. I ran into the same problem and that final step wasn't obvious from the instructions in the thread, nor from use of ROM Manager.
youre not supposed to use rom manager on this phone. and trust me, when the issue on cwm/rom manager has been addressed as many times as it has, it doesnt count as a "snarky" comment.
anyway, you are better flashing bali than krylons cwm. you are going to flash bali/voodoo cwm anyway, so might as well make it easy and do it now. think of bali/voodoo cwm as an upgrade to krylons (even though krylon made all this possible)
i botched a simple bootanimation.zip change. i also cannot find the steps i was following. i have a sensation ARHD brand new version. i chose a bootanimation i like followed the steps using the program File expert. i copied and pasted into, if i remember properly /data/local once i hit paste a prompt came up and i i saw that i chose overwrite accidentally, but i didnt get a chance to read it. in any case it didnt work rebooted/powered off my phone and now the /data folder is not showing and under system/ i believe there used to be a data folder in there as well. What did i do? where are those folders? How can i successfully change my bootanimation? im new please be gentle with me.
I'm going to help you

A backup in CWM is a nandroid..In the old Amon recovery it was just called a nandroid and is stil typically referred to as that, but a backup in CWM is the same.
If the bootanimation didn't change (or changed to nothing), you probably need to set the permissions...This can be done a few ways, either thru the command prompt or a file explorer. You need to give it read and execute permissions..From the command prompt you should be able to run "chmod 777 /system/media/bootanimation.zip" and that should work fine
no issues thankfully. just believe something went wrong bc i couldnt find that directory.
Also try another app such as root explorer. Some of these apps have a hard time reading /data.

Theres a free file explorer on here called "root browser" that works great.
I think the issue here is the file permissions.
