Use root explorer to copy/replace recovery.bin put update.zip on root of sd card, reboot into recovery.

This is what I did and worked perfectly. But I allready had KD1 which I recomend you get. Download the recovery and update.zip and put both of them on the root of your sd card. Then get root explorer from the market. Open root explorer and go down to sdcard. In the sd card you are gonna find the recovery file you placed in there. Your long press it and its gomma say copy. Copy that and press back button and then your at the main page of root explorer again. Its gonna say paste and cancle at.the bottom but dont press anything yet. You go all the way down to system and go into it and then into /bin. In /bin your gonna press the mount r~w button at the top right which allows you to paste the file. You press paste at bottom left and its gonna ask if you want to overwrite say yes.(if it didnt ask you overwrite that either means the file you downloaded was renamed.or there was a (2) or (3) on it if you downloaded various times. Just take the ending out so its.just.recovery)
Now back out to homescreen of your phone.and if you have kd1 you can get into recovery from quickboot if not then turn off your phone and hold powerbutton and both volume keys while the phones turning on normally it will go to a bluish screen with an android.(recovery) here you click reinstall packages and your done

I really don't have that directory - should I have it?

issue solved by formatting the SDcard
so I formatted mt sdcard and the managed to get into CWM.
I hava another question:
now every time I want to go into CWM I should do the same procedure?
I mean put the update.zip in the root of the sdcard->go to recovery->reinstall apps?

[Q] How do I keep ClockworkMod?

OK, so after fighting with my Nexus S 4G for three hours trying to get it rooted (it took 15 - 30 minutes for my Hero and Evo Shift) I finally established root and wanted to install ClockworkMod. Of course I've come to learn that it's just not that simple, and I have to rename the default recovery, which require r/w permissions, and just more hoops to jump through.
Long story short, I rooted, set r/w access and renamed install-recovery.sh and used ROM Manager to install ClockworkMod. Reboot to recovery, and all seems well. Except that the next time I reboot, I'm back to the default recovery, my renamed install-recovery.sh.old is no where to be found and low and behold, install-recovery.sh is back.
Considering how easy this was with HTC devices... I'm starting to get a little pissed off.
Anyone have any idea why I can't maintain ClockworkMod?
Why don't you just use fastboot and flash the recovery image? It will be permanent if you do that... It takes about ten seconds.
Download the clockwork mod recovery and rename it to recovery.img then reboot your phone into the bootloader (hold volume up while you power on your phone). With the Android sdk installed and in your path, type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and enjoy. If you want more specific help, you can pm me. I'll need to know what type of computer you have, Windows, Mac, or Linux in that case.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App
If you're sure you did the renaming properly and after that the file got restored back, I'd suggest you trying to trick the system by making a backup of the original install-recovery.sh and then instead of renaming it, just delete everything in that file so you still have the file named install-recovery.sh which will do noting to the recovery partition

OK... tried this. No go.
Reboot still shows the default and not clockwork.
The file I renamed on my i9020a to prevent stock recovery from being reinstalled was in the folder \etc and was called install-recovery.bak
Cheers
So you're saying that your NS is rooted but when you boot into recovery, default recovery replaces CWM right?
1) Download 'Root Explorer' and 'ROM Manager' from the Market (Skip this step if you already have done so)
2) Reboot
3) Open 'Root Explorer' and open 'etc' directory
4) On the top right hand corner, click the 'Mount R/W' button
5) On the same directory, find 'install-recovery.sh' and rename this file to a different name (e.g. install-recovery.sh.old)
6) Open 'ROM Manager' and click 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.'
7) Reboot

Do I need to rename both?

Sounds like you didn't replace the recovery binary correctly if it's giving a "verification failed" error.
I did though, I rooted my phone using super one click, robooted it, replaced recovery in system/bin with krios' and left the update.zip on the root and it still didnt. I dont think it really rooted though..

next, power down the device and instead of powering on regularly, press volume down+ power button or volume up+volume down+camera+power on you should be in the recovery mode.

It sounds like you may be in stock recovery. We have to use a bootstrapped recovery called openrecovery. After you have installed openrecovery you get to it by holding the volume up key during a normal boot.

Reading your post, I think there is a step that was missed. Did you extract the openrecovery.zip? The extracted contents are what is in this folder sdcard/openrecovery.
Do you have this set up on your SD card?
Sdcard/openrecovery.zip
sdcard/openrecovery
sdcard/nandroid/openrecovery/<your ROM you want to restore>
**No spaces between**
Go to this thread and download and unzip this recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1242259) This is what we are all using now b/c of the customization that MZ put into it. Follow the directions.

Help with custom ROM flashing

After searching on this forum for a few hours, I am still unable to figure out what is wrong with my phone.
On my Galaxy S 4G, I have rooted it, and then I proceeded to the flashing guide here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508
But after I install CWM, I am unable to install a custom ROM. I am able to get to the Red CWM, but when I try to backup my current ROM, or install from SD card, it says that it cannot mount E:/blah blah blah
How should I fix this error?
I tried going to Mounts and Storage in CWM, and the sdcard is "mount".
I am really confused, so if anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it
That blah blah blah its actually important. What can't mount? If sd is mounted, then it should say "unmount"...

Right now, my CWM mounts are as listed:
-Unmount /cache
-mount /data
-mount /sdcard
-unmount /system
So yes, it is in that order. I read something about
Code:
A) For KD1 and Bionix Frost your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : mount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
B) For Trigger your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : unmount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
I got this on Ebay and I had no clue what the seller did to it, but I think it's the original Froyo.
Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.VUVKD1
So you are on 2.2. I would back up the sd card. Then format it by plugging it directly into the computer, formatting. then putting it back into the phone boot into cwm. Formatting it again. Placing the files you want on the root. Trying again. let me know

Oh, after I got CWM working, I went into the Rommanager app, and flashed from SD card, and I chose BlackIce_Voodoo.rar and it got stuck on the "Galaxy S exclusively for T-mobile" screen. I understand that after flashing a rom, it takes around 10 mins on that screen, but I have waited overnight, and it still has not booted. Now, I can't even boot into CWM anymore. How should I handle this situation? The whole phone is bricked, and CWM is not accessible anymore.
I also tried turning it off, holding volume up & down, and plugging the wire in to enter download mode, but it failed to do that. So I guess I can't use odin either.
Please, Don't use ROM Manager on this phone.
I'm not sure how to solve this if it can boot to the splashscreen but not get to download mode.

Thanks, I didn't know that from before Since I already did it, how can I "undo" the effects of Rom Manager? I already put the new Update.zip into the root of my SD card. But I am unable to reinstall packages using CWM because I can't access it .
Try using plugging it in and look at Odin again. I heard it can recognize devices sometimes even if the screen is blank.
Edit: If you get your phone up and running again, use the Gingerbread Starter Pack guide to flash a GB ROM without any problems.

Try downloading the Android SDK, install it, when you run it the first time, only download the platfoem tools. Once that's installed, open a command prompt, CD to where the platform-tools directory is located.(prob C:\Program Files\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools or C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools) and type:
Adb reboot download
Or
Adb reboot recovery
For download mode & recovery mode, respectively.

In my first post, I already mentioned I searched for hours. I have saw the Odin guide post, and followed it and got no results. That is why I posted a question. I posted AFTER I spent hours searching on the forums. Not before...
And yes I know I have to be in download mode, but I couldn't get to download mode,
hyudryu said:
I also tried turning it off, holding volume up & down, and plugging the wire in to enter download mode, but it failed to do that. So I guess I can't use odin either.

Edit: I used the command and managed to restore it back to stock ROM. How can I flash the Bionix Frost ROM or Black Ice?

Sorry, not trying to be a jerk, but this thread is posted in Q&A and moved to Q&A from General at least 3 times a week. You 'say' you searched, but had you 'really' searched, you would have found those threads too.

I hope the android sdk 'adb reboot download' helps you with your download mode issue.

I found all of them from the flashing guide, to CWM guide, to rooting guide. But the Odin guide only teaches me how to flash a ".tar" file, not a .rar file.

AH! Well, you don't flash the rar file!
You unzip it and flash it's contents
Some rom modders use rar, others use 7zip (because they usually have limited space to store their mods, compress it good!)
I dislike Odin, as it is proprietary and has no support and few updates.
I prefer Heimdall, as it is free, has support, and updates often.
Hope that helps.

I unzipped it and its a bunch of files inside folders :\ Theres the data folder, META-INF, scripts, system, tools, updates, permissions. How do I flash folders?
I got Heimdall, but I am still unable to add the BlackIce_Voodoo.rar in.
It says "Tar header contained an invalid file size."
Edit: I just read about there being an "Audiophile" ROM for the T959V. Since I care about my music quality, I decided to get that.
I downloaded a zip called "redux 1.3.2.zip" from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195878&highlight=Audiophile
And I am clueless to how to flash a zip file :\
I tried extracting the files, and I am still clueless to how to flash those files/folders.

Your UNrar program... Guessing winrar, unrar'd the rar file and contained a zip file, that you thought was a folder.
You flash that zip file from cwm.

Assuming you already have gingerbread installed, you are rooted, your phone connected with PC and usb debugging enabled.
Step 1
Donwload
recovery.img from http://www.wuala.com/caroceiro/optimus 3d/roms/acura/Acura3DMAX V2/?lang=en
Download
Clockwork Touch.rar from http://d-h.st/zdj
extract Clockwork Touch.rar
run LGP920_CWM_5.8.1.5_Flasher_WinXP.exe BUT DO NOT PRESS SPACEBAR YET
copy recovery.img from your downloaded files and paste it into same directory with LGP920_CWM_5.8.1.5_Flasher_WinXP.exe and overwrite old recovery.img
Now press spacebar in the dos box and let it flash
Step 2
Copy Acura3DMAX_V2.zip in your internal sdcard.
Reboot into touch recovery
go to mounts
Format DATA
Format SYSTEM
Format CACHE
Step 3
Install from internalsd Acura3DMAX_V2.zip
THATS IT
If you followed this guide its flashed now you should reboot and wait for startup guide.
Thxs

well it wont boot stuck on lg screen so how will i put on sd after d/l?
restore your backup
if you dont have a backup try this
get into cwm
mount emmc
run LGP920_CWM_5.8.1.5_Flasher_WinXP.exe that you downloaded earlier
but dont press spacebar
look into the directory of LGP920_CWM_5.8.1.5_Flasher_WinXP.exe and there should be a file called adb-win.exe
open a command prompt and drag an drop adb-win.exe into it put a space and type push and then drag and drop Acura3DMAX_V2.zip leave a space and type /emmc/
it should look like this (although it depends on your directory structure)
"D:\LG Optimus3D\Clockwork Touch\adb-win.exe" push D:\downloads\Acura3DMAX_V2.zip /emmc/
or you could try installing it from your external sdcard

So if I'm following correctly, we DO need to flash the recovery image or we DO NOT need to?
If this is just a rom then this is simple flashing with no extra steps but there has to be a reason for the recovery...
