After searching on this forum for a few hours, I am still unable to figure out what is wrong with my phone.
On my Galaxy S 4G, I have rooted it, and then I proceeded to the flashing guide here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508
But after I install CWM, I am unable to install a custom ROM. I am able to get to the Red CWM, but when I try to backup my current ROM, or install from SD card, it says that it cannot mount E:/blah blah blah
How should I fix this error?
I tried going to Mounts and Storage in CWM, and the sdcard is "mount".
I am really confused, so if anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it
That blah blah blah its actually important. What can't mount? If sd is mounted, then it should say "unmount"...

Ok, so it's the red "CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v3.0.2.8x"
I go down to install zip from sdcard > Choose zip from sdcard > Select blackice_voodoo.zip
Then, it says on the bottom in white words
"CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v3.0.2.8x
--Installing: /sdcard/BlackIce_Voodoo.zip
Finding update package...
E:Can't mount /sdcard/BlackIce_Voodoo.zip
Installation aborted"
Now, when I tried to use the Backup function, it tells me
"Can't mount /sdcard"
I went to Mounts and Storage menu, and selected the "-mount /sdcard" and it gave me "Error mounting /sdcard!"
Is there any more information you need to help me?
in CWM are your mounts Unmounted mounted mounted unmounted in that order?
What firmware is currently on there? the tmobile GB kj6 or the original Froyo?

Right now, my CWM mounts are as listed:
-Unmount /cache
-mount /data
-mount /sdcard
-unmount /system
So yes, it is in that order. I read something about
Code:
A) For KD1 and Bionix Frost your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : mount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
B) For Trigger your mounts must appear like this:
/cache : unmount
/data : unmount
/sdcard : mount
/system : unmount
I got this on Ebay and I had no clue what the seller did to it, but I think it's the original Froyo.
Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.VUVKD1
So you are on 2.2. I would back up the sd card. Then format it by plugging it directly into the computer, formatting. then putting it back into the phone boot into cwm. Formatting it again. Placing the files you want on the root. Trying again. let me know

Oh, after I got CWM working, I went into the Rommanager app, and flashed from SD card, and I chose BlackIce_Voodoo.rar and it got stuck on the "Galaxy S exclusively for T-mobile" screen. I understand that after flashing a rom, it takes around 10 mins on that screen, but I have waited overnight, and it still has not booted. Now, I can't even boot into CWM anymore. How should I handle this situation? The whole phone is bricked, and CWM is not accessible anymore.
I also tried turning it off, holding volume up & down, and plugging the wire in to enter download mode, but it failed to do that. So I guess I can't use odin either.
Please, Don't use ROM Manager on this phone.
I'm not sure how to solve this if it can boot to the splashscreen but not get to download mode.

Thanks, I didn't know that from before Since I already did it, how can I "undo" the effects of Rom Manager? I already put the new Update.zip into the root of my SD card. But I am unable to reinstall packages using CWM because I can't access it .
Try using plugging it in and look at Odin again. I heard it can recognize devices sometimes even if the screen is blank.
Edit: If you get your phone up and running again, use the Gingerbread Starter Pack guide to flash a GB ROM without any problems.

Try downloading the Android SDK, install it, when you run it the first time, only download the platfoem tools. Once that's installed, open a command prompt, CD to where the platform-tools directory is located.(prob C:\Program Files\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools or C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools) and type:
Adb reboot download
Or
Adb reboot recovery
For download mode & recovery mode, respectively.

AH! Well, you don't flash the rar file!
You unzip it and flash it's contents
Some rom modders use rar, others use 7zip (because they usually have limited space to store their mods, compress it good!)
I dislike Odin, as it is proprietary and has no support and few updates.
I prefer Heimdall, as it is free, has support, and updates often.
Hope that helps.

I unzipped it and its a bunch of files inside folders :\ Theres the data folder, META-INF, scripts, system, tools, updates, permissions. How do I flash folders?
I got Heimdall, but I am still unable to add the BlackIce_Voodoo.rar in.
It says "Tar header contained an invalid file size."
Edit: I just read about there being an "Audiophile" ROM for the T959V. Since I care about my music quality, I decided to get that.
I downloaded a zip called "redux 1.3.2.zip" from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195878&highlight=Audiophile

I tried extracting the files, and I am still clueless to how to flash those files/folders.

Your UNrar program... Guessing winrar, unrar'd the rar file and contained a zip file, that you thought was a folder.
You flash that zip file from cwm.

This is what I did and worked perfectly. But I allready had KD1 which I recomend you get. Download the recovery and update.zip and put both of them on the root of your sd card. Then get root explorer from the market. Open root explorer and go down to sdcard. In the sd card you are gonna find the recovery file you placed in there. Your long press it and its gomma say copy. Copy that and press back button and then your at the main page of root explorer again. Its gonna say paste and cancle at.the bottom but dont press anything yet. You go all the way down to system and go into it and then into /bin. In /bin your gonna press the mount r~w button at the top right which allows you to paste the file. You press paste at bottom left and its gonna ask if you want to overwrite say yes.(if it didnt ask you overwrite that either means the file you downloaded was renamed.or there was a (2) or (3) on it if you downloaded various times. Just take the ending out so its.just.recovery)
Now back out to homescreen of your phone.and if you have kd1 you can get into recovery from quickboot if not then turn off your phone and hold powerbutton and both volume keys while the phones turning on normally it will go to a bluish screen with an android.(recovery) here you click reinstall packages and your done

A bunch of things you need to know for galaxies vs aosp
1. I also came from a g1. I loved it.
2. AOSP, Sense, Motoblur.etc excluding Touchwiz(These types run on the basic file format. Install rom from a signed zip, start up using a bootloader spl, you must be familiar with hardspl. A boot.img, this is the kernel, and a zip with /system, and other stuff. Also a recovery.img(Amon Ra). And a modem.img
3. Those phones have a posibility for ADB Remount command and fastboot.
eg adb remount, or fastboot flash recovery.img
4. Touchwiz is Galaxy. They run on 2 bootloader binary files, a zImage as a kernel, and mainly the /system partition called factoryfs.rfs is stockly available on a computer flashable tar file which has the files. The tar files usually with files that include factoryfs.rfs, datafs.rfs, cache.rfs, param.lfs, boot.bin, sbl.bin, zImage and modem.bin.
5. Factoryfs = /system zip datafs = /data partition cache = /cache partition, param includes core files like splash image 1 for the g1, and boot and sbl are bootloader, zImage = boot.img with different coding, modem.bin = modem.img
6. zImage contains the recovery.img partition on GB and the /system partion has recovery in froyo roms.
7. Touchwiz has odd mounts, and flashing alternate recoveries has the potential to make your phone an expensive paper weight.
8. There is a feature kind of like boot loader and spl mode for g1(rainbow screen) called download mode. This is where you connect to the computer to flash the big tar files.
9. The smart devs have created a clockworkmod recovery, which has more functions then amon ra and allows you to flash zip files with sgs4g roms.
10. Boot animation cannot be changed unless you have a kernel supporting them. Instead of bootanimation.zip, they use 2 files called bootsamsung.qmg, and bootsamsungloop.qmg
11. DON"T FLASH ANYTHING NOT MADE FOR THIS PHONE, ESPECIALLY BOOTLOADERS AS THEY MAY MAKE YOUR PHONE UNUSABLE, THE REST USUALLY CAN BE RECOVERED.
so is there a way to backup/restore my galaxy s like i could my G1
1. the galaxy s 4g is not a G1
2. yes, you can back it up by going to "backup and restore" in CWM and then clicking "Backup". this will back everything up.
you can restore by choosing the same option in cwm, but "restore" once in the menu.
if you are on a rom that you want to keep, you can go to advanced restore in the backup/restore menu and restore only your data.
gdofwar has a tutorial out on how to backup/restore the phone. does this help?
when i go into ROM Manager and click "backup current rom" it takes me to the screen in the picture. there are no backup options. incase you cant see the pic. the options are:

Flash, not push. Unless you're rooted, the file system is set to read-only. If you are rooted, download root explorer or any other file system explorer, set to R/W, and push again.

Where in that quote does it say to extract the update zip and place it anywhere except the root of your sd card ?
You just place the zip file itself not extracted on your sd card and don't ever do anything with it, don't flash it don't extract it.

When you get to the 3e recovery you need to select re install packages to enter cwm. The other option is to Odin flash the latest Bali kernel.
i never knew that downloading and moving around 2 files could be so hard for so many people.
Click on the Bali + CWM link in my signature for the easy to follow Odin instructions.
I'll ignore the snarky comments and thank the poster for the hint to reinstall packages. I ran into the same problem and that final step wasn't obvious from the instructions in the thread, nor from use of ROM Manager.
youre not supposed to use rom manager on this phone. and trust me, when the issue on cwm/rom manager has been addressed as many times as it has, it doesnt count as a "snarky" comment.
anyway, you are better flashing bali than krylons cwm. you are going to flash bali/voodoo cwm anyway, so might as well make it easy and do it now. think of bali/voodoo cwm as an upgrade to krylons (even though krylon made all this possible)
Hey all. I did something silly and deleted a file in system/bin folder while troubleshooting a problem. I made a backup of the file before deleting it in sdcard/download but my phone wont boot so I can copy the backup file back to system/bin. I am able to get my phone into download mode and I believe I could copy the file via adb. However I do not know how to get adb to recognize the phone in download mode. I type...
adb devices
and it states "List of devices attached" and there is nothing under the list but when I plug my phone via USB it shows "SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device" in device manager so I know my pc is recognizing it. I have used adb before with batch files like 1click root and things like that so I know its just me not knowing the right commands to get my device recognized.
Any and all help is appreciated! I just need to copy 1 file from sdcard/download to system/bin and I would assume it would boot back up with no problem!
Thanks!
do u have cwm installed?
I just installed CWM v5.5.0.4 via download mode using this method. http://www.theandroidsoul.com/skyrocket-root-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery/
So now that I am in CWM I am trying to mount things like /system and it shows an error mounting /sdcard and I get that error messaging for mounting all except mount usb storage which works great. I was however able to get the file off my phone but now how do I get the file back to system/bin?
Yes.. you can (and really should) flash CWM from download mode via your PC/laptop. A few weeks ago I did something very similar and soft-bricked my SR by renaming an in-use file (framework-res.apk)... I also only had 3e, so couldn't just restore a nandroid or flash a rom zip. Go to the Dev section and find the thread by Copperhed ("Root the ATT SGH-I727 Skyrocket..."). read through the OP and follow instruction exactly. You will be Odin3 flashing just the CWM recovery partition... this will NOT trip your flash counter. If you are already rooted, you should retain root... if not, you can root via his OP. After you have CWM recovery, there's a way you can mount the sdcard so you can transfer files between your PC and SR... then, you can put the sbin file back and see if it reboots fine... if not, with CWM installed, you can flash (via zip.. not Odin) any rom/kernel/modem zip package you want.
Even though I installed CWM from a different source I thanked you anyways DoctorQMM! Now that I have CWM installed how to I transfer the file from my pc to the system/bin directory? I have been able to mount usb storage and it show up as a drive on my pc but when I mount /system nothing shows up. What am I missing?
Thanks for all your help! I am almost there! ^_^
hey, I recommended it first . Seriously though, download a kernel from the dev section, any kernel. Open it up in winrar, winzip, etc... and delete everything except the system folder. Now take the bin file u copied to ur computer and put it in a folder called bin. Put this bin in the kernel zip inside the system folder. Now delete everything else in the system folder. Put this file on a microsd, slip it in ur phone and flash it through cwm. this will put the bin back, and allow u to reboot phone
JDub... PM cdshepherd.... he's the one who shared with me you can use the mounts and storage option in cwm (then click "mount USB storage")... then you can copy files between your sd and computer without having to do what I did (which was pull external sd out of SR, mount in micro adapter, plugged into laptop and loaded files on the sd... then put sd back in phone.. booted into CWM and flashed the rom zip I put on there). Yes.. you are close! If you can't get that one file back to sbin on root, you could try to flash a stock rom/kernel zip (KK1 or LA3)... you only need to put that rom/kernel zip on your sd or external sd so CWM will see it.
icenight89 your right you provided the inspiration so I thanked you as well and appreciate the explanation. I will perform it now and see where I get. Let me understand this correctly in steps..
1. Download a kernel, any kernel.
2. Open it up, delete everything except the system folder.
3. Create a folder named bin and put the backed up file in the bin folder.
4. Delete everything else within the system folder except the bin file and bin folder. So it should be /system/bin/xxx.file
5. Put this on a microsd card and flash it through cwm. I assume I do this by selecting "install zip from sdcard?"
Thanks for the continual help! ^_^
I am having trouble with the kernel part. I downloaded a i727 kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340114&page=2. Opened it up and it has boot.img in it. Am I missing something?
Alright. I downloaded the kernel from here http://www.mediafire.com/?85g701ate11zdc9. The kernel contained a folder named system and deleted everything else. I then added the folder bin and added the backed up file I deleted to the system/bin/ directory. I then mounted usb storage via CWM and put the new .zip in there. I then selected "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from internal sd card" located the zip file and selected "yes." I then get the following read outs...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
--Installing: /emmc/sgh-1727-skyrocket-att-original-kernel_2.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
So it looks like it is not installing. Am I doing something wrong?
wrong kernel, download this one:
http://faux.androidro.ms/sky-kernel-010b1.zip
delete everything from in there except system folder, including boot.img, and follow instructions again, should work

these steps are exact, nice
Unfortunately I get the same error message with the kernel you supplied. x.x
010b1.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
Are you sure I can just delete and add stuff like that and It will work? I mean it makes sense to me but since it keeps aborting there may be something crucial missing that I need to keep in the .zip file. Any ideas?
Here is a link of my modified zip. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6778642/Android/sky-kernel-010b1.zip
pm me when u get a chance

download a rom from Dev section. Doesn't matter which one. Try silvers rom you'll like it. Mount USB storage in cwm. Copy rom to sd. Eject SD from computer. Go back to main menu in cwm. Wipe data/factory reset. Wipe cache partition. Wipe dalvik cache(under advanced in cwm) format system under mounts and storage. Back to main menu in cwm. Install zip from sdcard. Choose zip(rom) you just placed on your SD. Flash it. Reboot device. Enjoy. And make a nandroid after it boots for the first time.

Did you make a cwm backup of rom you were using prior to this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
No, I did not make a nandroid backup. I had to install CWM from download mode and then I was able to get into CWM all without booting.
I appreciate your time in writing a solution however I am not interested in wiping everything and starting from scratch which is what your proposing. I simply deleted a file in system/bin named mediaserver so system/bin/mediaserver. When I rebooted the phone would not boot. I made a backup of the mediaserver before deleting it and placed it in the sdcard/download folder. All I need to do is copy the mediaserver file back to system/bin/ directory and phone should boot backup as if nothing ever happened. That's is how I understand it. Its just missing a file and I know what the file is and I have the file I just need to figure out how to copy it back over to where it belongs.
I do know how to install stock and other roms but after spending numerous hours on my first phone, SGS Captivate, to experience others roms like Darky's Rom the end result was that it was not worth me having to keep up with all the releases and bug fixes, loading in working kernels to make things work correctly and the like. I would rather just stick with stock. Its just a personal preference.
If anyone knows how to copy a file from my pc or from internal sdcard to my Skyrocket using Download mode or ClockWorkMod using any means but without wiping my data please let me know. Eventually if I do not get a solution I will be forced to revert back to the stock rom but I would rather leave that as a last resort.
I look forward to any other suggestions!
Thank you!
Without the ability to push/pull with adb your running out of solutions. I do hope that you get your skyrocket up and running no matter what method you use. And I do hope that someone with the ability comes along to help you. My way is prob the easy way out. If it were me ide cut my losses. Start from scratch, and try to figure out where my prob starts. Good news is there is a great community with plenty of help. Good luck mate.

Since my zip suggestion didn't work, try flashing a different kernel, romracer stockish 0.3 is a good choice, from cwm

Based on your first post, I don't think your pc is FULLY installed your device. Download mode requires additional drivers.........adb devices should return a serial number.
I have not tried adb on my skyrocket...I will do that for your sake and reply with my experience..
I remember downloading this and saving it when I still had the SK4G. It works great, just replace the update.zip on the / of your sdcard to use. Click the THANKS button if you D/L'ed/Used/Referred To/So on...
Just because of the nature of this mod, I cannot and will not be held responsible for any mishaps to your devices and or any of its accessories (SDCards) that in this weird world of ours may just happen. This should not discourage you to use it, just saying.. You break it, You fix/replace it.

I'll still help you with your device (tech help mostly), if you need anything PM me. (probably only/fastest response)
dude your a life saver im on att and a flashaholic unfourtunatly while me and some pantech flex users are hard at work getting recovery after we successfully rooted our device about 5 days ago i havent been able to flash anything because the new cwm for the sk4g had been taken down everywhere and the koush one is so buggy and wont let me backup or flash i been looking everywhere for this

I may be wrong, but I think its due to not replacing the stock binary file with the modded binary file. I'm trying to find it online but krylon's site no longer hosts the file...

Make sure you guys are extracting the the zip and putting the extracted recovery into the system/bin, not the whole zip.
You can also use the search and find where I reposted sduvicks fakeflash utility. It will install CWM for you.
In V2 eXDialer have force closes

His page on Android Spin? I used to download it from there .. don't know if its stopped working now :/
I tried sduvick's script but it wasn't working for me so I had to push the files myself.

replace the update.zip on the /root of the SD. No Odin required. Rename to update.zip, and place it straight on your SD.
That did not work until after I rooted it using RageAgainstTheCage
Re-upped by me here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?hn5ikyt6xpn8d9x
After doing that, then it allows the update.zip to work without failing signature check.
EDIT: Then I also used SuperOneClick to shell-root.

Ok guys the actual problem here is that there is a file missing that you need to push through to your "/system/bin" folder in your SK's root directory.
The missing file is the custom "recovery" binary file that krylon360 created. After doing so, either by ADB pushing the file or copy pasting it with a root file manager, you may boot into recovery then run the 'reinstall packages' command in the stock recovery. This in turn loads the new recovery.....
ALWAYS CHECK YOUR MOUNTS IN CUSTOM RECOVERY. It will save you an accidental pain in the ass. Trust me.
Mounts should look as follows:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-unmount /cache
-mount /data
-mount /sdcard (this sometimes says it is mounted-- not important)
-unmount /system (MOST IMPORTANT. IF IT DOES NOT READ AS THIS SAYS- THEN FIX THAT AND MOUNT IT BEFORE ANY BACKUPS OR WIPES. YOU WILL GET STUCK IN THE SCRIPT)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will see if I can host the file in my Dropbox. As for the help, it is available in many older posts already. But a hitting that thanks button couldn't hurt ;D

Thank you
I would like to say thanks to you all helping out with this. My lack of signing in here has to do with me not even having an Android-powered device anymore. I sold my SideKick and MyTouch together for about $250. I still come back here and look around every now and then, but see that a lot of you guys have it under control. So, once again thank you.:good:
