Improvements since launch? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had the Nexus S from the day it was launched but decided to return it within the 14 day cooling off period as I just didn't think it was worth the money and in its state at the time I didn't feel it was finished / polished as it should be.
Problems reported about the screen coating and the lack of responsiveness of the capacitive buttons also led me to the decision to return. I then started to hear stories of the phone not being able to hold a conversation for more than a few mins and the phone randomly powering off.
That was then and this is now. After the disappointment of MWC 2011 I am considering picking up the Nexus S again but I am interested to know what has improved since launch. I'm assuming the o/s has gone through a few updates and am hoping that the problems above are all now resolved.
Anything else anyone can add into the mix I would be interested to hear.

Never had a problem with it on phone #1. Didn't even have to return it.
CM7 on Nexus S is amazing.

The problems you listed have not been resolved.
Even with CM7 there are random reboots and lost of signal. Thes are gingerbread/google problems, not necessarily ROM related. Although I love the phone, it's not very stable.at least not compared to my ns1.

This is worrying for a phone that's supposed to be at the bleeding edge as far as Google is concerned - a pthone that's meant to get all the updates as soon as they are available.
If Google know of these problems and have a fix in place (which I have read they do) then why not release it?

face it, gingerbread was not/is not ready for mainstream. yet so why would you want them to push out another update to fix a problem if that update just isnt ready yet?

Are you kidding me? I could live with a few niggling bugs, sure I'd even expect them but if I owned a Nexus S and it was dropping calls left right and centre I'd be looking for a fix pronto!

Fixes are due this week, supposedly (According to a video posted here). Engadget had a story on it here

Who cares about Gingerbread? Awaiting Ice Cream where it combines Gingerbread & Honeycomb
but seriously, i haven't encountered ONE bug that has been mentioned. No reboots, smooth as hell, no browser lag. The only bugs I encounter are from CM7 nightlies [when they occur]

That's probably not Gingerbread though, that's probably just flash in general.
And there is a G4 app on the market.
Ill admit that it is laggy at the beginning when its still loading, but after its done loading.. its fine, but sluggish and not 100% smooth.

Uninstall flash and try it......just as laggy!.......thanks for upping me on the app tho!

Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Curious because I'm considering returning the captivate for the aria (other than the Screen the Captivate Really Kinda Sucks). If you had it to do again would you pick the Aria over the Captivate?

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

[Q] Will CM7 take care of a lot of these bugs??

I just switched over to a G2X Saturday from a Cliq with CM7 (Before that, J_Rodds 1.6, and Motoruler3) I have been reading about all these bugs with the G2X and I am sure that many of them will be fixed by LG eventually. My biggest problem with my handset is the data and phone reception. Now I have to use wifi calling from my house where I have never had any problem in the past. My battery life is not the best either. What I would like to know is if these problems will be fixed with the new roms that will be coming out? I am seriously considering returning the G2X and waiting on the HTC Sensation, however I really prefer the smaller 4 inch screen over the 4.3 so I would like to stick with this phone if I know all these issues will eventually be gone. I certainly was able to do all kinds of things on the Cliq I would have thought imposable. I appreciate anyones feedback.

I don't want to make promises for them, but the (minor) issues are mostly software based. CM uses very little from the specific device software outside of drivers and baseband, etc., so yes, I think you'll see a lot of improvement.
I must be a lucky one or something I havn't had any of these issues that are coming up the phone has been great so far. Even the screen bleed on mine is super minimal and can't really be noticed. I'm guessing alot of the bugs will be cleared up by CM7 or the official update.
if you wait for the sensation, you'll be at the mercy of the carriers for support. good luck with that. i've read that cyan won't be supporting htc and their locked bootloaders. so you'll be waiting for carrier support or on another dev who is willing to hack at it.
It sounds like Im gonna have to stick it out for the 2 weeks I have. Sounds like in that time all these bugs should be fixed one way or another. My main issue is with the reception. Is that something that can be fixed with an update of with a custom rom or am I stuck with what I have in the phone now??
What bugs?
My main bug is the cellular reception and data. I am fortunate not to have any of the other bugs Im seeing posted. (knock on wood)

Is it just me having all the buggy issues?

I don't know if it's my root, the leaked rom i'm running or because i titaniumed all my apps back on my phone.. but i'm getting random resets, slow performance (for a DUAL CORE phone?!?) and little quirks here and there... i'm selling my G2 tonight on clist and now i'm nervous about letting it go with these issues. I am getting random reboots etc. Also my GPS is now almost useless. I am on the leaked GB rom but everything else is stock. I am trying to decide whether to get a refund or take a chance on getting one that is good. This is my third one and while it is much better than the first two it has too many little issues. I am very undecided and am thinking i will get a refund and wait for the SGSII
I wasnt getting lagg on the leaked GB but I was getting reboots. Went back to stock w/ Paul's tweak. It's stable and plenty fast until gingerbread gets official. Most of those issues are software related so rest assure they will be fixed at some point.

Thanks I may try going back to stock with Paul's tweak for a couple of days, I hope it is software related I would hate to keep it and find out different.
All phones are buggy when they first come out. When the gingerbread update goes out most if not all the reboot and freezing issues will most likely be fixed. The only problems with the phone that are confirmed hardware problems (to my knowledge) have to do with the LCD screen.

Yes, but "can be fixed" and "will be fixed very soon" are two very different things.
I am using eaglesblood rom and it has been very stable, i had to return one phone but this second phone has been working much better, if you have the ability to exchange i would go that route first before selling the phone.

i agree with piztol, i am on my third phone with a manufacturing date of 4/25/11 and so far i have had no freezing,SoD(sleep of death), or restarts and a battery life of about 15 hours on pretty heavy usage. i firmly do not belive that our problems are software based. I believe its hardware.

random reboots are one of them. on certain roms,ie. eaglesblood, i don't think i had more than 1 or 2 reboots in using it for a week or two. the same rom themed gave me a few reboots a week. i've seen others having same issue on other roms.
The a2dp is likely related to the driver, and should be able to be figured out relatively easily.
The random reboots seems a bit awkward though. Would be nice if we could get some logcats.

Congrats! Got mine on 4/20 and am very satisfied with my purchase.
Thanks everyone I'm looking forward to the phone quite a bit.
Currently with CM7, the biggest issue is getting APN's to stick after reboots or coming off wifi. It has gotten much better but it is a weird bug. In Mobile Networks, when you search for networks, it won't connect to any of them. The only option that works is Automatic.
The fix is to select a specific network, let it error out, then do automatic. Once it reconnects to the network... the data connections will pop up.
A2DP I guess is one, but I don't use it. And supposedly the battery drivers is wonky but it was wonky in Stock Froyo.
Overall CM7 has been my daily driver for a while now. I don't have any issues with reboots or anything. You just can't go by the battery% because some nights it'll say 39% then it will be dead in the water next time I look at it. I don't have random reboots. I even tested it by not feeding my flashcrack addiction and made sure to put it on a charge "when I thought it needed it" and I've been up for 5 days.
The hardware of the phone is pretty solid. No major issues other then weak software/drivers. The official Gingerbread is closing in which hopefully brings a new kernel and baseland update. Tmobile has stopped selling the current G2x because I think it is flushing out it's current stock of 2.2 in anticipation for the 2.3.3 varieties.
I think if the phone spent a little more time in the oven and just released with Gingerbread, these forums would be a much happier place. Personally I'm glad it released when it did so we could start crackin' at it and have something to play with.

Hmm I see a few different issues there. But I have a feeling I can get the APN bit patched up when I get the phone. I already have a few ideas on where to go with that. It sounds like a bit of a RIL problem to me, so I should be able to get that knocked out relatively easily.
Battery % will likely be a problem until the GB update is released, as it's likely a kernel/driver related issue.
And I agree. I don't care if a phone has a few problems upon release. Noone can be perfect, and internal testing is NOT a perfect indication of regular real world use. People need to understand that no matter how much testing gets done, it is still going to have an issue here and there.
Welcome. A couple of my buddies have an Epic, so I'm somewhat familiar w/ your quality work. And I dig cm7, so it will be great to have someone with your talent level workin' on that...
I don't know about anyone else, but I am excited! Welcome!

Battery driver issues
I think the battery driver issue itself is being considered as random reboot issue. Coz people tend to assume looking at the % that they have sufficient battery but in the background, it ain't. That might be one reason. But from what i observed in mine, it dies completely rather than reboot(but people tend to use this word more often than when actually it is a restart of the phone by itself). But u know what, to get to know how much percent is actually left in ur phone..... just plug it in the charger and remove it, the percentage refreshes.... . I Wish it refreshes with just the cable being plugged in rather than putting it in the socket .
Btwn.. Good to see a dev interested to address issues! Thanks!
Oh happy day. Im, sure you will help bring out the full potential of this glorious device combined with other devs like morific, krylon, faux and team douche. The welcome! When will you be getting the device?

Bugs: Sensation>G2X

I just bought one at Walmart yesterday and was going to decide whether or not to give it to my wife or keep it and give her the G2X. Needless to say, I can't do anything with it. After playing with it for 30 minutes it got hotter than any other phone I've ever used and then froze. After a reboot it worked for about 15 minutes and the second I opened up the market app it rebooted itself. I called T-Mobile and they can't do anything until the phone is officially released and Wal-Mart doesn't have anymore in stock since they only got 2 to begin with. All of the other local Wal-Marts didn't get any in. My only option is to return it for my money back which I will be doing tomorrow. In the end, I was lucky enough to get a G2X with no bugs but not lucky enough to get a Sensation with none.
G2X - 1
Sensation - 0
Side note: In the 30 minutes I had to play with the Sensation, I already figured out I would have been giving it to my wife. It is not as fast as the G2X and it's clear that Sense 3.0 is bogging it down. The internet browser is also no where near as fast as the G2X. Don't get me wrong, it will be a good upgrade from her MyTouch Slide but it's not a upgrade to the G2X (if you got one without bugs).
I've been using a Sensation for two days now and I have yet to have any bugs. My only complaint is the bluetooth voice dialing doesn't work natively and the internet seems to run a little slower than the G2X. But I have found it is definitely much more stable out of the box than the G2X. I have had the phone running now for 2 days without any issues. When I bought the G2X my phone had already rebooted a few times in that same amount of time.

Well hopefully the next one I buy is big free. I've been reading over the Sensation forum the past couple of days and it looks like I'm not the only one with major issues. Like I said, I was lucky enough to get a working G2X. Guess you were just lucky enough to get a working Sensation.
Whats your take on the speed of the device? I definitely noticed lag in the UI and it was noticeably slower than the G2X. I didn't get a chance to play any games before mine locked up but I would like to know how it performs in that area. I don't expect the Snapdraggon to perform as well as the Tegra II since it is built off of the old A8 architecture while the Tegra II is built on the new A9 but I would like my wife to be able to play her games with no stutter. Have you played any games on it and if so which ones and how did they perform?
Well for now...I love my g2x....I will get the sensation when its well mature in the scene...the g2x still young...

Hello, good to knoe man. I have been really happy with my phone.
On a side note, you should probably change the title. Is a little misleading. I actually thought you meant that Sensation was less buggy.

I haven't really seen a lot of major issues being posted over on the Sensation forums. The bug threads that I've seen have only had minor things in it. Anyways, to answer your question I don't notice any lag. What I did notice is that there are a lot more animations on the Sensation than on the G2X. Those animations make the phone feel slower than the G2X. For example when you press the home button, the fade in animation that takes you to the home screen is slower than the quick little effect that happens when you press the home button on the G2X. I changed my animation setting on my Sensation to "some animations" so that I didn't have as much eye candy and had a little bit better speed. I noticed when I set it to "no animations" I didn't see any difference between it and the G2X. I put up a thread with a bit more of an in depth comparison between the two phones. Check it out, perhaps it may be of some help for you.
As for gaming, I've yet to do any real 3d gaming besides Nova (which ran perfectly fine).

As for the major bugs I have read about in multiple forums, they are as fallows:
Display has a yellowish tint
Rebooting
Freezing
Locking up when using the camera
Getting hot
Wifi and Cell signal dropping when holding the phone in landscape
During some games you get screen tearing
From my 30 minute experience I thought the display looked good. I didn't have the yellowish tint. As for the other bugs, the only one I experienced was the locking up, getting hot and rebooting. I didn't get a chance to use the camera or use the phone in landscape. I will test all of these things when I get it but the signal degradation seems to be pretty major. There a thread dedicated to it on there forums and also a blog entry about it on GSM Arena.
I'm aware of GSM Arena article..they have a thread about it in the Sensation forum...but also in the same thread nobody is really having that issue, and I haven't been able to replicate it either. All in all I think it's safe to say that the G2X definitely has more issues than the Sensation. They may eventually get fixed but as it stands now, it has more issues. In the same two days I've been experimenting with the Sensation, my G2X has reboot itself a few times..and I won't get into the battery life lol.

Actually in the Sensation forum multiple people have also stated that they are getting dust particles under their screen. To me that is a really huge problem.

I had this happen on 3 of my Nexus Ones. I dunno what the hell HTC is doing, but something isn't right.

I read your comparison thread over in the Sensation forum and thought it was very well written.

I don't know what thread you read but people are definitely experiencing the issue..the sensation looks great but imo it looks to have just as many issues and has yet to be mass released yet...
My gf has the HTC aria from at&t and it has voice search but it doesn't work with voice dialing. If you say "call wife mobile" on her phone, it just does a Google search.
It does know map and text I believe but I think it's just a sense thing.

Try this on her phone. It sounds like the same thing. It's stupid that HTC left it out.
