So not sure how many of you may know me, but I come from the epic 4g development forums.
Can't wait to develop on a new and more powerful phone.
Looking forward to working with new devs and helping bringing some nice things to this phone

no no no DONT buy this phone!! j/k, you will love it, once you overlook its SW faults, which you as a developer should be fine with, since im guessing you see it as a challenge instead of a reason to ***** lol.
Welcome to the dark side! Hope you enjoy your stay.
LOL =D
Haha. I look forward to the challenge. Ill be focusing on Cm7 quite a bit, and start helping to get some of these bugs patched up.

amen! the more the merrier. it's been a little slow for the past week or so. i think the buggy gb release is the reason. but the more roms the merrier. welcome aboard.

Can't wait to have a stable build of CM7 on this phone. I loved it on my Nexus One and I've been missing it. But I think the hardware in this phone creates a lot of potential and should be more than useful my foreseeable mobile phone future lol.

Yeah the hardware seems to be amazing and definately looking forward to getting a fully stable cm7.
What are the main bugs in current builds?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The battery driver pretty much needs a rewrite. A2DP is non-functional.

random reboots are one of them. on certain roms,ie. eaglesblood, i don't think i had more than 1 or 2 reboots in using it for a week or two. the same rom themed gave me a few reboots a week. i've seen others having same issue on other roms.
The a2dp is likely related to the driver, and should be able to be figured out relatively easily.
The random reboots seems a bit awkward though. Would be nice if we could get some logcats.

Congrats! Got mine on 4/20 and am very satisfied with my purchase.
Thanks everyone I'm looking forward to the phone quite a bit.
Currently with CM7, the biggest issue is getting APN's to stick after reboots or coming off wifi. It has gotten much better but it is a weird bug. In Mobile Networks, when you search for networks, it won't connect to any of them. The only option that works is Automatic.
The fix is to select a specific network, let it error out, then do automatic. Once it reconnects to the network... the data connections will pop up.
A2DP I guess is one, but I don't use it. And supposedly the battery drivers is wonky but it was wonky in Stock Froyo.
Overall CM7 has been my daily driver for a while now. I don't have any issues with reboots or anything. You just can't go by the battery% because some nights it'll say 39% then it will be dead in the water next time I look at it. I don't have random reboots. I even tested it by not feeding my flashcrack addiction and made sure to put it on a charge "when I thought it needed it" and I've been up for 5 days.
The hardware of the phone is pretty solid. No major issues other then weak software/drivers. The official Gingerbread is closing in which hopefully brings a new kernel and baseland update. Tmobile has stopped selling the current G2x because I think it is flushing out it's current stock of 2.2 in anticipation for the 2.3.3 varieties.
I think if the phone spent a little more time in the oven and just released with Gingerbread, these forums would be a much happier place. Personally I'm glad it released when it did so we could start crackin' at it and have something to play with.

Hmm I see a few different issues there. But I have a feeling I can get the APN bit patched up when I get the phone. I already have a few ideas on where to go with that. It sounds like a bit of a RIL problem to me, so I should be able to get that knocked out relatively easily.
Battery % will likely be a problem until the GB update is released, as it's likely a kernel/driver related issue.
And I agree. I don't care if a phone has a few problems upon release. Noone can be perfect, and internal testing is NOT a perfect indication of regular real world use. People need to understand that no matter how much testing gets done, it is still going to have an issue here and there.
Welcome. A couple of my buddies have an Epic, so I'm somewhat familiar w/ your quality work. And I dig cm7, so it will be great to have someone with your talent level workin' on that...
I don't know about anyone else, but I am excited! Welcome!

Battery driver issues
I think the battery driver issue itself is being considered as random reboot issue. Coz people tend to assume looking at the % that they have sufficient battery but in the background, it ain't. That might be one reason. But from what i observed in mine, it dies completely rather than reboot(but people tend to use this word more often than when actually it is a restart of the phone by itself). But u know what, to get to know how much percent is actually left in ur phone..... just plug it in the charger and remove it, the percentage refreshes.... . I Wish it refreshes with just the cable being plugged in rather than putting it in the socket .
Btwn.. Good to see a dev interested to address issues! Thanks!
Oh happy day. Im, sure you will help bring out the full potential of this glorious device combined with other devs like morific, krylon, faux and team douche. The welcome! When will you be getting the device?

Ok, normally its a no brainer as im used to CM7 on the G2, but i have been reading there is a lot of bugs with it (i have not read since nightly release 17 or so and i think its up to 30 or something around that now so i gotta catch up a bit i just got the phone today). I also read that eaglesbread or something like that is mentioned all over the place. normally i would not ask this question, but with this phone there is a lot of issues and want to clarify everything.
im an avid CM7 user, so trying other roms makes me nervous, so overall what has been the best ROM where everything works (gps, wifi, 4g, reboots, etc etc etc)
I would also like a rom with an overclockable kernel built in, as im kinda nervous about flashing kernels, but please feel free to share combos of roms and kernels that work outstanding as well. again, im used to a G2, so over there i dont ask this question, as i started and will continue to use CM7 on my G2.
my G2x is already rooted.
You are going to get alot of opinions cause at this point in time no rom is that much better then any other
Now wait for a while longer and I am sure it would be an easier answer

lol, sadly in the back of my mind, thats what i was thinking.
usually before i buy a phone, first thing i look for is how easy it is to root, then i look at hardware, then roms and stability. as you can tell, i have been trolling the G2x forums for almost 2 weeks now looking around and have not seen anything that is straight forward like on the G2, but i also got the G2 in feb 2011, so it was already out for a while prior to my purchase compared to this phone has been out for what 3-4 weeks now?
my initial plan was to stick with stock rom, just root it and change the font and remove some bloatware and wait for the official GB update and install it manually from one of our great developers on this site
my device has very very minor screen bleed at each of the 4 corners and even that was hard to find, screen build quality seems good and all day under moderate use has not locked up on me. i will have to figure out why wifi was having an issue with me, but my G2 was also have wifi lockups that it never had before so it may be an issue on my end. but 4G connectivity has been working 100%.

If you're a Cm fan, now's the time to jump on board. #34 is fairly stable. I use it as my day to day. The battery readings are still f'd up something major. Bionix is a really nice rom. Smooth and clean, and really no major bugs that I noticed. I rocked that for about 7 days, in between #26 and #33 CM. The battery goes fast with Bionix however...if the reading is, in fact, correct.

Thanks for the input, would you mind clarifying what you mean by fairly stable?
Nonsense!
I've been using Eagles Blood 1.04 Froyo for about a week now and its been great. I chose this one because it looks stock and I like that (black status bar is a nice mod too). Everything has worked fine: wifi, calls, GPS, 4G, good battery life, etc. I tried a couple Gingerbread variants but I had too many issues -- freezes, major keyboard lag, GPS not locking on. Haven't tried CM yet, although I loved it on my Nexus One.
Just my 2¢

There are some freezes with any of the roms when you use the kernels but what do you expect when you overclock to 1.5? From my experience the most stable set up for me is running stock froyo or EB froyo, but I always change my mind and go to GB and CM7 so go figure. Mind you the freezes for me are about 3 times a day and are annoying but the trade off IMHO is worth it

You should be much more concerned about overclocking your device than flashing a kernel. You really don't have much to fear, just dont get careless.
CM is a crowd favorite but its not for me so I dont think you would benefit from my opinion on the available roms.
I just encourage you to take a deep breath and start flashing rom to rom. You just might find that you like something else a lot more.
Faux asop is pretty solid for me. His latest with kernel is doing well so far. I haven't had the random loss in audio lately. If the battery is wrong I don't care because I am ocd and it helps me not worry!

Same here. I liked cyanogen mod up through 4.1.11.1 on my G1 but ever since then there have been roms that are both faster and more stable. Props to cyanogen for influencing the movement though. Not knocking him, just not my style anymore... going to try faux's aosp I think.

Hey devs, might you want to consolidate your efforts a bit?
Hey guys, i am currently interested in getting the g2x to dev on. I dev for the Moto defy since the day it came out and have plenty of roms. Now my question is how are you guys experience with this device? I've read some complaints of tons of reboot and back light leak, poor signal..etc.. Any comments would be much appreciated, looking forward to getting this phone
Very good device. Some have backlight bleed but only really noticeable in the dark and when looking at it on an angle.
I haven't had any reboots recently but once when i got a call and after hung up it just died and had to pull battery.
Main problem seems to be that Nvidia's lack of sources for A2DP functionality for stereo bluetooth and that 2.3.3 is on froyo kernel so further updates with custom roms would be difficult.
thanks for the reply, how are the roms? Any problems with current roms ?

In all honesty, CM7 works perfectly even with the lack of a2dp support. 2.3.3 OTA based roms (namely Weapon G2x) works just as well if you want that close to stock feel with more features. MIUI has all the same problems CM7 does since they run off the same kernel.
I've never had any issues with reboots, and if people do it's probably because of rogue apps running in the background. I never had a reboot because I like keeping my app drawer as minimal as possible At least, that is my theory
I love my g2x..just checked the sgs2 but not really into that much, my g2x on Cm7 was faster... The roms are good, I do agree with the lack of tegra support but Meh. Love it..please get one and welcome..
I love my phone.
Excellent performance, excellent display, and excellent battery life. I'm on my 3rd one, but that was because my first one kept locking up, and my 2nd replacement came damaged.
I love this phone, and I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else until the Nexus Prime. ^_^
Absolutely zero problems, love this phone so much. One of the best parts is the glass. It's curved, which makes unlocking it feel really good , and the glass feels really thick and solid. Also NO scratches, coming from an iphone all these things are huge. Loving it.
I feel like this phone can stay up to date with most of the devices coming out right now... On Android, you don't actually need 1GB of RAM... Heck, 512MB is more than enough! I'm gonna hold out until the quad core phones start coming in... If the Nexus Prime is still a dual core, I won't even bother.
I got 99 experiences but a reboot ain't one.
My 1st G2x is running good.
no reboots, no reception issues.
runs great and my app drawer always has at least 200 apps.
lol
I haven't started deving /theming on it yet.
Thanks everyone for you input! Just placed the order for it and cant wait to get. Never dev for any other devices besides moto , so im looking forward to this.

Reboots
My wife and I both have our 3rd G2x (due to replacements of bad phones). The phones we have now are doing well, however we both did experience a random SHUTOFF not reboot. It only happened twice, so I'm just waiting to see if that happens again, really weird.
My G2x is is running great. On my second one due to random shut downs on my first. I only experienced a couple reboots until I got a brand new battery and rooted the phone. Currently running Eagles Blood 2.3.5 others no misshaps. Love it.

This is a great phone. For those of us that have had no problems, the intended impact of the device is evident.
However, you cannot ignore what a lot of people went through. for many, the g2x experience was the worst possible.
LG and T-Mobile appear to have let the phone fade away. Even though its for sale, and can be had for cheap, it no longer appears in comparison with other good phones on the market today. Check the reviews out their today...cnet, etc....The powers that be have let it fade away.
Even DEVs appear to have moved on. Many of the people here a few months ago have moved to other devices. Even saying that, there are some real good ROMs out there...just less people deving them.
In all honesty I have to say, this phone is the best phone I've owned. But in that same honesty, I'd have to say, you may want to consider something else. Even the Sensation is now getting far more press and exposure from T-Mobile than this beauty. There are TONs of ROMs available for the Sensation and some of the best DEVs from the android world are there.
I've recently considered the Bionic....but the VzW pricing plan is just too much. Minimum $100 a month to walk out with a Bionic.
I love the G2x. But if you want long term upgradabiity...you may wish to look elsewhere.
Just my opinion....

No. It just finds it. Maybe not on second one, but 10-20.
Also, I came to G2x from the Bold, which would die in a day with no usage under dead zones. That was a huge problem - I was forced to enable and disable airplane mode all around. The G2x is great in that matter.

I have noticed that a lot of problems happen under the stock ROM or roms based on the stock one.
Flashing something like CM7 or MIUI fixes a lot of problems.
Just wondering if anyone heard about how soon the release of the cyanogenmod for droid charge is coming for the droid. I just read online that it is currently being worked on and is in the alpha stages. Anyone have a clue?

Fixed sorry I knew that was wrong lol!
it is being worked on, however the progress is considerably slow... it has gotten to the point of functionality just without radio which is by far the hardest part as the RIL pretty much has to be built/ported from scratch or hacked up a lot to work, 3G/CDMA shouldn't be a problem as much as the LTE
with that said, jt1134 (our cm7 guru!! lol) hasn't been active much lately, most likely because he's looking for a new job or is busy or could be taking time off... just be assured its being worked on though the going is slow

JT just posted over at Rootz that since he is out of work, he can't afford to get a SIM for his development Charge, so there will be no progress until such a time that he can get work and money to continue development.
I seen over at Rootz they were tossing around the idea of taking donations to get JT a month or so of service.

Is it safe to get this phone presently? Has all the hardware issues been cleared out? I'm looking to pick one up soon second hand. Can anyone point out to me what manufacturing periods I should avoid? Or anything that might help me point out to a dud of a G2X that might have random reboots, overheating issues, etc?
Gonna start prowling on Craigslist to see if I have any luck.
Some people continue to have issues to this day while others dont so there really isnt a consistent way to know if the phone will work properly or not.

Thank you. I guess I'll scratch that idea of getting this phone. Don't want to risk dealing with the hassle and headaches of buying a phone of CL only to find out that it's rebooting like crazy.
Honestly, I hated this phone when I first it, but after getting into using custom ROMs and kernels, I love it. Bottom line is this: if you want a phone that you will use stock, don't get it. If you plan to run a custom ROM and especially if you're even relatively knowledgeable or intelligent grab one if you can get it at a good price. We even have an alpha of ICS out which isn't half bad, it is an alpha so it can be problematic at times.
Edit: also if you want to get into running custom ROMS then definitely go for it, if you can read and follow directions exactly this phone is awesome in that its next to impossible to permanently brick it.

What worries me is if it has hardware issues that causes random reboots or overheating issues. I remember reading this when the phone first came out. Other users also had GPS issues, etc.
I'd be willing to get one if the price is right on CL but these things makes me nervous. Any tips on what things I could "try" while testing the phone out on CL or things to look out for? I know the other user said it would be hard to tell...but at this point, anything would be helpful.

By the way, how's the issue with development with regards to a closed source code?
I remember last time that one of the issues why development was so stale on this phone was due to the closed source nature of the Tegra chip. Is this still the case?

Last time I checked there was active development. Regardless we do have an Alpha of CM9 which if you're aware of the implications of using an Alpha and are ok with it, is good. As far as teh Tegra crap, yea, I think we would have seen a release alot sooner if NVidia wasn't closed-fisted. Otherwise, that's one of the only major downfalls of the alpha is that there is no hardware acceleration, so some ICS specific apps won't run or won't run right.
As far as testing, just do regular stuff, do a litttle browsing, install an app, play a video look to see if it's physically damaged AT ALL, etc. As far as teh GPS, it is an odd one, but I have a method which works 100% for me:
GPS status (download GPS aiding data)>reboot>GPS status to get lock>maps
I also did that and instead of maps I launched Locus and it also got a lock.
Just a note Craigs List not the best place to buy a cell. Do a search, too many horror stories about bad phones.
We just got ics so based on hardware and software specs if your willing to root and flash still a top of the libe phone with bad battery life hah
Pin it to Win it.
If you want I could sell you mine for 250 shipped. Running whatever rom you want. Pm me.
I'm one of the ones who never had any major issues as constant overheating or rebooting...rooted since day 1by the way and with ics roms out its even better. If its dirt cheap I recommend it
It depends, its a decent size and speed. I had mine clocked at the 1500 on eaglesblood and the faux123 kernel stopped the daily SODs (sleep of death). But I wiped it and gave it to my GF only to have the SODs return on the same Rom and Kernel that had gotten rid of it for me. There is also an overheating issue, I was on my second battery in 2 months without clocking the cpu and the smell is horrible, this is a huge issue with these phones.
I think that the phone itself is a great piece of hardware that needs a lot of customizing to get it to where you want it. In the hardware department you get a lot of bang for your buck but it is almost a requirement to install a custom rom to get day to day smooth functionality that we want. Fortunately there is a good number of roms to choose from that you can sample and find one which that best suits your needs
This phone is like having a beautiful wife that just don't act right. It will drive you crazy at times but you just can't keep your hands off it.

Thank you. I guess I'll scratch that idea of getting this phone. Don't want to risk dealing with the hassle and headaches of buying a phone of CL only to find out that it's rebooting like crazy.

I just bought one off of Craigslist and am very happy with it. I gave my wife my T-Mobile galaxy s 2 because I didnt like the way the screen isn't sharp and lack of development for now. I started using her sensation but was not impressed so I bought the G2X. Way better than the sensation I might add. The screen is very impressive, looks better than the sensation,gs2 and my old vibrant. I was really shocked. Battery life though seems to be an issue but I will work it out. The camera is better than the sensation but the gs2 has the best camera I have seen to date. If I were you I would buy one. And yes I do a lot of phone swapping, I think I have owed every Android phone that came out for T-Mobile starting with the G1
I'm surrendering .. as soon as I can i am going to replace my G2x. And I will enjoy smashing it to tiny bits with a hammer as soon as I have a replacement in hand.
My advice: do the same. Give up on this phone. It is not worth it.
Neverless THANKS TO EVERYONE here who works on this unit--you kept me going for a long time and I am grateful.
Almost two years now I have been struggling with this phone ... tried many different ROMs, different basebands, paying attention to how different apps affected the battery, changed around mount positions for external storage, spent time on the GPS configuration, etc., etc.
I found some decently stable configurations--some where almost everything worked. The best was CM7.2 with v21y baseband--usable (~12 hour) battery life, good sound quality, and no battery pulls, overheating, or SODs. However no voice over bluetooth and no call waiting.
Next I found a configuration where bluetooth voice worked but call waiting still didn't work and now GPS couldn't lock.
Then I found a configuration where I had both bluetooth and GPS, and acceptable call quality, but still no call waiting.
At the moment I decided to accept this state of affairs, and the at-best 12 hours battery life, I get ... overheating, random reboots and SODs again!
Ah f**k you Lucky Goldstar. Never again for LG for me--not even if someone gave me a free Nexus 4.
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy a few months ago in the Philippines ... it cost 1/5 the price I paid for the g2x. EVERYTHING WORKS. It is slow, and has a small screen, but again, it JUST WORKS. GPS, bluetooth, battery life, call waiting, etc., etc. It is the LOWEST-END android phone that I am aware of. And yet it kicks the butt of my G2x on its worst day. Even with its low-end hardware I am saving so much time having a phone that just does what I ask of it.
I am not writing this to advertise for a specific phone .. but to share my near-religious revelation with others here: THERE ARE BETTER PHONES! And the G2x WILL NEVER BE ADEQUATE.
My eyes are open and I have seen the light!
Wow, I wish I had spent all the time working on this phone to more productive uses--I could easily afford three new Note IIs by now.
At least I understand the Android OS much more than I ever could have, so that is some silver lining.
All that being said I want to give a THANK YOU to everyone here whose hard work helped me on the way. You rock.
I'm running mokee and have my phone set to restart every night at 5am. Wake up with it feeling snappy. Usually slows by the end of the day, but it's usable.

I feel your pain. It's been a never ending struggle to get this phone running stable. Too many FC's SODs, phone app crashes and slow-motion lag, regardless of the ROMs I've used. Been without HWA too long on custom ROMs, also.
All the efforts from the devs, along with their knowledgeable information and advice, is much appreciated. Through all of the adversity that we had to face with the missing drivers and code, I've learned a lot about the inner workings of the Android system.
As anxious as I am to try JB on this phone, I'd rather have it fully working than having no phone functions at all on a JB ROM. This phone is no longer a priority to devs because it's two years old, which is completely understandable.
I'll be flashing CM7.2 (maybe the nightlies) and will just grit my teeth and tough it out for the next month or two.
I hope to see all of the same devs from here in the GS IV threads, because that's the next phone I'm getting. Then I can retire this G2x and if the code is ever released and a fully functional ROM compiled, I'll flash it, just for the sake of closure.
To be fair, the G2X is a great phone. It's built really well, I love how sturdy it feels, but it's just the software (and LG's Manufacturing) that let it down. Luckily, with our devs here, we got upgrades and fixes for all the crap that LG fails to fix. It sucks that we have to be stuck with the modem that will not let us get a fully functioning radio (Unless our awesome developers succeed in their struggle to, again, do things that LG never bothered to do.) Such a great phone, ruined by LG. The only reason I got my Nexus 4 was because it's backed by Google. I would never buy the Optimus G or any other phone from LG until they have solid software support.

I think that the stock ROM is not perfect (it's made by LG coders after all), but the custom ROMs are much worse and make you have all these issues you described here. I tried lots of customs, but ended up with the last rooted stock from LG, having stablity, battery life, less some eyecandies.
(I don't want to offend any developers that spend their time developing custom roms, but honestly, it's only 'hobby' projects)

I also use rooted stock. I hate it, but I hate it less than the dozens of custom roms I have used. Mazouts and adampk's roms are our only hope.

But isn't it T-Mobile that is to blame for the software failure of the G2x? LG reps tell you that it's up to T-Mobile whether an upgrade is available? Because I think the P900 has an ICS ROM by LG?
LG still released a phone that overheats and locks up. Even if gingerbread is old now, other phones aren't broken when they're using it.
