Kernels (VPN,uPNP, DLNA support) - G Tablet General

With the various kernels out there for the gTablet, I have found it odd that none seem to support uPnP/DLNA. I'm running TNT Lite 4.22 on my primary tablet and experiment daily with other ROM's on my test tablet. Both are Viewsonic gTablets. What I find very interesting is that the port of NI's Adam to the gtab supports VPN and DLNA built-in. No modified kernels are required and DLNA works great.
Maybe some of the dev's (Roebeet, Clemsyn, Pershoot) that know a lot more than me could help figure out how to get DLNA working in TNT Lite with a custom kernel using the gAdam port as a guide. My favorite ROM is by far TNT Lite with Clemsyn's kernel, by the way.
I am willing to offer any help I can provide but I'm not a dev. but can certainly supply files from both systems.

I didnt have any problem at all using DNLA or upnp with any of the roms. And Im pretty sure that clemsyn and pershoot support vpn.

Wow that's great. I tried using a few DLNA server programs on my tablet but none of them got picked up by any of my TV's. Using the gAdam port, they both (iMedia Share and Skifta) got picked up like a charm. Maybe I am missing something on the TNT Lite installs? On the gAdam, I just installed the App. Would you mind sharing what program you used and what other steps you might have done?

I think i installed upnpplay and it picked up both my upnp and dlna stream. There were a couple other programs as well but tha one seemed to work the best.

uPnP should work OOTB, even with TnT (Lite). But CIFS / SMB access does not.
The gADAM port actually uses pershoot's kernel, which might explain the differences you see. I did that as I could not get the stock Adam kernel working on the GTAB without making partition changes via nvflash, and I didn't really want to do that. So I opted to using pershoot's kernel and also the CIFS module.
I don't do this for TnT Lite as I prefer to keep that "close to stock" - users are welcome to use whatever custom ROM they want after-the-fact, but that's up to them.

Android 2.2 [FROYO] running on Archos 5 IT - Need developers

Hi,
the openaos community got Froyo running on Archos 5 Internet Tablet
If you (developers) want to help us you can contact us on forum:

or on IRC:
Freenode: #openpma
Thanks

Genious
Nice...(Froyo) I will be following.
I wish Archos could pull in itunes "Genious" program. Thats the only thing itunes has thats worth anything to me.
Is there any news on this?
I purchased two Archos 5 IT units yesterday,,
It would be nice to run 2.2 on it instead of 1.6
Really looking forward
heres the latest
http://dev.openaos.org/wiki/SettingUpMultiRootGen7
http://www.openaos.org/
only doable easily if you are running ubuntu - which I am not.
There is a tutorial onyoutube for installing but I have difficulty following the guys instructions.
Would be awesome if some one could cook out the latest froyo release for the gen8s into something that works on the 5it. I would happily loose the (sometimes sh1te) mkv supporting archos media player for rockplayer or other of the new breed of android media player that runs all file types.
If anyone can-knows how to complie an aos that is installable without ubuntu Im prepared to give it a go.
Cheers
gurry
Well I followed the instructions and I have froyo on my 5it.
It's a bit limited but runs fine. Just need to know how to get market working.
Is there a way to compile a new rom by using the current img I have and adding on options? Such as remove phone function add in google apps.
A detailed hide to rom building would be great.

I also installed Froyo some days ago, but I restored the firmware because the Archos Media Center in my 1.6 Android ceased to work.
Is yours still working correctly?
Reverting back to Android 1.6
Once I hack Archos IT 5 to Froyo, can I go back to the original Archos 1.6 setup with all the original apps?
You can remove the whole developer firmware back to stock 1.6 by holding down vol - and powering up the archos and reset firmware from there.
I had triple boot set up with mine. 1.6 froyo and angstrum all selectable on first boot.

froyo on archos 5 it
Hi everybody!!!!
I have installed froyo on my archos 5it.
I still have access to archos os(android 1.6(v2.0.38)).It's working fine. But when go to froyo, i use some of the apps, the browser didn't work i installed dolphin browser. I tried to use an app that required root access, it didn't work.i went on the android market(that works great!!) and installed root check. It just confirmed that i don't root access. So i'll be very happy if somebody could give me some help on how to have that root access.
Thank you.
PS: I would be happy to do some testing for any developer !Just ask!!
bump bump bump
Is this project completely dead in the water? I'm still holding onto my Archos 5IT (500gb) in hope that someday it will get Froyo but it's getting mighty heavy next to my Evo and Viewsonic G-tab.
Archos 5 Internet Tablet
I'm holding on to mine too. Love the space on it for music and movies but wish it was updated with something. Only a handful of apps showing on the market to download.
hi
some one can make foryo for archos 5 it that can very interesting

CM6 V6.1.0-RC2 2.6.32 Test Kernel

This is a test release with a new kernel 2.6.32 based from legend kernel source modified by cyanogen and attn1 to work on cm6. I am looking for reports on wifi and bluetooth mostly. Since this just replaces the kernel in 6.1.0 RC2. I don't want bug reports of issues already mentioned in the main 6.1.0 RC2. Please contain them to wifi and bluetooth. Overclock is included. I basically want to make sure your wifi runs good and the bluetooth works with your headsets/a2dp devices.
Thanks for testing

Changelog?
Is the included overclock already clocked higher or is it set at stock?
It would be great to have more info on this please! I may test it out once you can include more information.
The os itself is the same it's just a kernel change. Going from 2.6.29 in the other release to 2.6.32 in this test release. It's basically a subsystem change. You won't see any cosmetic change. I just want to make sure it doesn't cause any issues before attn1 and I add it to the next cm release. The only reason I mention OC is because this kernel still has it in it. So you will have the same OC features as the 2.6.29 kernel. Hope this helps explain what has changed.
Just curious if this .32 kernel will pave the way for FM radio support?
Wifi is working fine for me so far. I don't use any bluetooth devices, so haven't tested that.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
downloaded, haven't flashed it yet. There's still no nls_utf8.ko in /system/lib/modules. I know how to compile one, but I'll appreciate if you guys could make a small change in the config.
Code:
CONFIG_NLS_UTF8=m
That would save my trouble.
Wifi is working fine; tested both Wifi data connection and Wifi tethering (actually posting this using Wifi tethering). BT paired with Plantronics 520 headset is working and BT Voice Dialer was launched when I selected the headset button.
Do you just flash this?
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
You install it the same way you install the cm6-rc2.

I made a kernel with your change. You'll still need to install the first package on this page before you install this kernel update. What is is for nls_utf8 used for anyways? Does this kernel update do what you need it to?

Thank you so much!!
nls_utf8 should always comes with cifs. With this module, we can mount cifs with "iocharset=utf8" option to access files that have special characters in their names. This is quite important for non-english users who use cifs.
WiFi seems be fine here. Bluetooth connects and working fine with Blue Eagle ll headset.

Thanks for your input guys, if I could get some more it would be great. CM6.1 final will be out in the next couple of days so I'd like to get as much feedback as possible before then.
Bluetooth is connecting fine with my Nokia headset (BH-503). Wifi is working no different for me (aka, it works).
Tether working great for me don't know about Bluetooth don't ever use it but everything else is great!
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
Wifi's fine. Cifs's working and it's good to have utf8 support.
Don't have any BT device to test on.
Wifi working for me. Just the kernel flashed over the latest nightly.
Downloaded this, ran it through it's paces as best I could. Connected two bluetooth devices (jabra and jawbone) worked without any glitches or weirdness. I also moved between several wifi spots WEP, WPA, and unsecured without issue.
Need any other info let me know.
I can also verify wifi working perfectly.
(no bluetooth devices to test that)
Only ROM in the CM series that works with my WIFI router (WPA-PSK). Had tired the most recent CM version and really liked the expanded dock along the bottom that allowed up to 5 icons to be placed there, but again, no wireless. Guess I'll stay with this one till Gingerbread comes out, Right...

How do I access NAS unit in my home network?

Hi all,
I just aquired a G tablet, and I am impressed by it. It has the stock 2.2 Android TnT interface, and at this moment it is downloadin the 1.1-3588 update.
SO, when it is finished, I would like to know how can I access my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo on my home network? Currently, it has ReadyDLNA and Twonkyserver, but both are turned off. Can I access it as a normal share at all?
Thanks for any help in advance.
I just bought a NAS unit yesterday so I would love to know this as well. I am running Vegan.

Yes, but not with the stock ROM you are using, unless you update the kernel. You need a kernel with CIFS support. CIFS is the essentially just a subset of the original SMB protocol, i.e. the thing that Windows uses for network shares and that most people are used to using for local network file sharing.
Clemsyn's kernel or Pershoot's kernel are the two standalone options right now, or you can use a ROM with CIFS support built in (Vegan ROM is the only one I know of right now). You should be able to install these with the stock ROM, but if you want to do that you should really at least install Clockwork Mod to easily flash ZIP packages of kernels and ROMs and to make backups and restore stuff in case something goes wrong.
Once you are using a kernel with CIFS support, just download the CIFS Manager app from Market and you should be able to mount your share. Search the threads in the Development forum and you'll find Rothnic's thread on CIFS support which more-or-less explains how to use CIFSManager.
Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any way to get access to shared volumes on the stock ROM with the original kernel.
Use Estrongs file explorer, or Astro if all you want to do is move files around. If you want to stream music or video I use uPnplay. And you can also use one of the CIFS enabled kernels.
I use a CIFS enabled kernel but use the other methods a lot more.
+1 ESFILE EXPLORER builtin capability to explore &trsansfer NAS server
I run a Samba share and DLNA server on my Dockstar. I use Plug Player to stream from it via the DLNA server and Andromote or Astro (also have to download the SMB addon) to copy files.
Like everyone else has said, you'll need to download a kernel that has CIFS support.
upnplay is another great DLNA option
Don't forget to install launcher proof you use cifs manager. Many people areexperiencing the issue where the stock launcher says the app isn't installed when it is.

BTW, I upgraded to TnT Lite ROM and installed uPnPlay and it works perfectly.

[Q] L2TP VPN TnT Lite 4.2.2 + stock kernel

Folks,
Quick question and I apologize if this has already been answered elsewhere in this forum but a search didn't reveal anything. I'd like to configure VPN on my g-tab so I can get into work from home. Does the default kernel support VPN? If not, is there currently a compiled kernel that I can dl that'll support L2TP. If I install this kernel, can I access/configure the VPN with my currently installed ROM which is TnT Lite 4.2.2 or do I need to switch to another rom?
thanks!
Id like to know this as well if anyone can answer please.
Thanks, Rob
I've been struggling with this ever since I bought my tablet back in early DEC. I couldn't use my juniper VPN because it required a java client, but I've been trying numerous different combos of kernels and loads to see what would work for my Cisco L2TP VPN (with a shared secret). The winning combo that worked for me was:
VEGAn-TAB GingerEdition - Experimentals: verison 03082011.
Kernel - pershoot 2.6.32.31-cyanogenmod.
The VPN setting does not show up in the network settings, so I downloaded "5 VPN" from the android market. When you click "connect", it takes you to the VPN settings of the device. I created my LTP connection and BAMMMM! It works!

G Tab TNT Lite ROMs & Tweakings

Couldn't quite figure out which version of TNT lite would serve my purpose or what exactly they included. Watched tons of Youtube videos on the various ROM flashings, and, the after results in action. This site has a wealth of information and I sincerely thank the developers. Someone should do a thorough comparison of what you get in each ROM. Some have details and others don't, just a summary.
Started with TNT 2.2 as recommended. Followed the instructions verbatim. Took sometime and had to search around for the various pieces of much needed software.
Z4Root
ClockworkMod
ROM Manager
Titannium Backup
I rooted the device with Z4Root then installed ClockworkMod, Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. Did my backup in Titanium Backup, turned off my system and booted to ClockworkMod, but not before checking first, it installed correctly. Performed a backup, unmounted the system and data, moved on to installing from the SD zip. TNT 2.2 worked fine. The browser was stripped down in both the 2.2 and 2.4 versions and the calendar was awful. On the upside Youtube worked much better and it was zippy. I could also get streaming radio in from Winamp. Shoutcast worked flawlessly.
Because of the crappy stripped down browser which no longer let me save bookmarks to my desktop I moved on to TNT 4.1.
What worked in 2.2 & 2.4 without issue:
Android Market (scaled down version)
Adobe Flash 10.1
Adobe Reader
Android System Info
Andromax
Antivirus
Auto Killer
Bluetooth File Transfer
Camera
Cleanoid
Contacts
Desktop Labels
Dictionary
Documents to Go
EasyShare
Facebook
Gallery (a much crappier version of the original)
Gmail
Google Maps
Launchpro (with 7 homescreens running in a rotating cube, flawlessly with labels)
Navigation
Photoshop Mobile
ROM Manager
Task List
The Weather Channel (the weather feature was removed from the ROM)
Titanium Backup
TouchRecalibration (the browser was slower and the scrolling was laborious)
tv.com (worked extremely well)
Twitter
Wikidroid
Winamp
Yellowbook (not yellow pages but both work, but yellowbook is awesome giving you a street view of what you are searching for).
The browser and scrolling lag is highly noticeable in both these versions making using the internet and awful experience. The crappy calendar, contact and gallery was a serious let down from the installed stockware. Next 4.1...
I dont understand why you wouldnt just get the latest one?
Was not prepared to deal with troubleshooting a possible endless dataloop and use at your own risk means just that. I watched tons off youtube video and one guy had tried quite a few. Just because it is most current doesn't necessarily means most stable. How is it running? And, are you experiencing any problems and if so what kind?
What's on there? Be specific. Help us out.
Ive had the latest version (whever it came out ) as my primary for about a month now.
No problems apart from the usual apps that dont work properly on tegra/tablets.
Im not on it currently, testing Adam rom...and not liking it as its very slow.
I noticed you mention Winamp and Shoutcast working flawlessly on the GTab. I've been having major issues with various streaming apps on my GTab.
Is this a common issue. I had shoutcast issues on every ROM I can recall trying.
Is there a fix for this, I searched around, but couldn't find anything except this thread, which barely mentions it.
Here are some that I am having issues with.
- Winamp (Shoutcast streaming only)
- Listen (Can't stream episodes, but can download them then listen)
- Tiny Cam Monitor (Can't view my network camera, which works perfectly on my wifi with my HTC Desire)
Any ideas would be helpful.
Thanks.
i just flashed the latest TNT lite right onto my Gtablet with no problems.
My order went like this:
open box
charge gtablet
flash tnt lite 4.4
switch to CW recovery
install kernel
?????

Hmmm, So you are able to do the streams I mentioned?
I just checked the About Tablet in Settings and this is the kernel mine shows:
2.6.32.9-00001-g6e47897-dirty
[email protected] #221
When I did the install I didn't do anything special to install the kernel, I just went with whatever loading the Rom with ClockworkMod. I did do a lot of rom's though, basically loading on all the major .zips I could find on here. Do you have to do anything special to install the kernel?
I assume it wouldn't matter that I am in Canada.

i run pandora and youtube just fine and they stream media. Also hulu.com works
i started with clemsyn 9, but then switched to pershoots OC kernel, but it still needs some fine tuning imo so i've went back to clemsyn 9. I'm about to try his new 10 OC kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895825
to install it just flash with clockwork mod and clear cache and dalvik cache.

That's the weird thing, I should have mentioned that I do have some apps that do work that stream.
These seem to work:
- Youtube (I noticed you mentioned it, and it works perfectly on mine also)
- Twit.tv by mediafly (This also works perfectly for streaming video)
- Revision3 (I haven't had any issues streaming video on this either)
Shoutcast and Tiny Cam Monitor are really frustrating, as I use them a lot, Listen is another one that I would get a lot of use out of if the streaming worked in it.
I can't test Pandora or Hulu as they are completely blocked up here in Canada.
I may have to try those kernels, I'm really trying to figure out if anybody else is having the same issues as me in with Shoutcast (in Winamp), Tiny Cam, and Listen.
I may give one of those kernels a try, I'll probably start with clemsyn 9 if I do any. I just want my tab to be as stable as possible, and still have hardware video decoding working (which sound like there are a lot of issues in Gingerbread still).
Thanks.
I'd stay away from gingerbread if video is important to you. Until Nvidia release official GB drivers video isn't gonna be perfect on GB roms.
I haven't tried winamp. But I really haven't had any issues with any apps not working. I'd suggest making the switch to TNT 4.4 and then installing that kernel.

I am having the same issue. I use winamp alot as well, but am experiencing problems with any streaming audio, except pandora and youtube. I installed TnTLite 4.4.0 directly without going thru CW mod as Roebeet stated that it was best not to do that. Rom loaded smoothly, and all works well, except for this issue with streaming audio.
switched to vegan-tab btw. A million times better than tnt-lite. Much faster and much more stable
A follow up to my post.... for those wanting to access shoutcast streams but couldn't, I just installed an app called "a online radio" from the market and thru it I am able to access the shoutcast streams. Yay!
