Yahoo Free Mail on custom ROMs solved - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

You can skip the story and go to the solution at the bottom if you don't care about the origin of the problem. This may help some ROM designers.
It appears that Yahoo may not want us to know this fix and is pushing us to use their Yahoo Mail app in the market. It is a pretty good app and is a nice alternative to this. But the stock email is quite fast in skimming /deleting emails from multiple accounts.
Story: When the original Droid came out, one of the first issues was that people with Yahoo Mail! (free accounts) could not use the stock MAIL application to set-up their account. We had to go to the website through the web browser to check email.
Then people all over these forums and other Droid forums came out with the "IMAP" work around. And it did work. The problem was that if you had your account setup to leave a copy of any email you send in your SENT folder, you'd get 700-1000 of the same copy in that folder. Mine was around 27000 emails in one folder in a few days. Annoying but as soon as I turned that "keep a copy" feature off, I was OK. But I still wanted a copy of my sent emails.
Motorola, Google, Verizon, or Yahoo came up with a fix and we all got it with the first OTA (over the air) update. Everything was great. But then I rooted my phone and tried all kinds of custom ROMS. In the mean time Yahoo came up with their own Yahoo Mail app (currently pretty good app, if you'd ask me).
Problem: Some of the ROMS appeared to be like the original Droid and not let Yahoo mail set up but some where fine with it. Unfortunately, my favorite ROM, MIUI, was of the ones that had problems setting this up. After talking with Jamezelle and him pushing me to find out what the fix was, I flashed my original ROM (right before I rooted) to see what was different in the settings. It seems like the IMAP solution is still in place but with slight modification to avoid multiple sent items being stored. The IMAP solution I have seen in all Internet forums do not mention this slight fix, hence, not a complete fix.
Solution:
The real FIX: I did not come up with this fix, I only poked around the phone to see what was different from what Verizon had pushed OTA in early 2010 that was not in many of the custom ROMs.
Please double check spelling as you enter into fields
1- Go to your mail app, press menu, add account. make sure you have erased any account you may have setup for this yahoo account. Long press and remove
2- enter email address, make sure it's your complete email address, and then enter your password
3-- press manual setup (lower left)
4-enter your username, this is your whole email address, fill out what you are missing (the @ sign and domain), your password is there
5- Here is the modification, the imap server is:
android.imap.mail.yahoo.com
the android part is new
6- Port: change port to 993
7- security type : choose SSL, imap path prefix stays empty, click next
if you have entered anything wrong you will get an error, check everything again. If OK, you go to the SMTP settings:
8- SMTP server:
android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
note the difference from above and the android word is also new.
9- Port change to 465,
10- Security type: SSL, and check the box for require sign in (important)
11- again make sure your whole email address is in the username field, your password is already entered.
If you keep getting an error after the SMPT setting, try connecting through WiFi and then repeat the steps. You may have to choose no encryption and then later change it to SSL I had a hard time setting up one of my droids but it did finally take it. Keep at it and it will work.
click next, if you get any error, you did something wrong. If everythig is OK, it will take you to the page to name the account and how frequent you want to check for emails. Finish it up and you are done.

I had to choose "SSL (accept all certificates)" other wise it kept telling me smtp error.
Thanks for the great directions
Stef

My Yahoo! problem was it kept saying i has the wrong username and or password when they both were correct. I pulled the settings off my wm6.5 to get mine to work with Yahoo!
Although ur fix was for custom roms, I figured i'd add it here. Hope thats ok.

I need a few fuze fixes

I have tried to look through but there are alot of posts and don't know how exactly to look this up but I need to know how to fix something with my internet. I have yahoo mail and don't use the xpressmail with at&t. I try to go to my normal mail.yahoo.com and it goes to the mobile version. I hate mobile versions of the websites. The yahoo version won't let you do anything other than text. No attachments or anything.
I need to just view full webpages. How do I change the settings to view them only? (saw something on at&t website but don't understand it and some people said it didn't work)
Second, I need to know how to allow for just the swirl zoom and not the tap zoom. When I open and it goes to landscape it gets rid of the swirl zoom on the internet and will only use the tap way to zoom. I don't like that way. I prefer the zoom by the d pad.
Third, If I am looking at playing alot of video and going to start getting some games on my fuze and wanted to know if I should change my display settings to something else that will make it look better. I remember on my last one(yes I had to replace one) somehow I got to display settings and they had options to change to xvga, vga, etc. Isn't Vga the best or is it set at the best as the default. Granted it looks good the way it is but I want the best for when I start doing video. And how do I get to it? I was looking around for it and can't find it anywhere now.
Also I was looking on what gps program to get. I was looking at the tomtom and was wondering what people thought of it. And what version would I need to get? Would you recommend a different one like garmin?
Sorry if these are double posts.
70 views and no answers and already to the 3rd page. Can anyone help me on this? No one on the at&t have replied and no one has here either.
Please help me, I'm having issues and need them fixed right away.

1) i don't think you'll be able to view it. It's the same with gmail, that's why they provide mobile version of gmail as well.
2) it shouldn't do that. what rom are you using?
3) the default setting should be optimal. i'm not sure why you'd want to play with the video setting. (i could be totally wrong on this one)
4) do a search on the forum, i'm sure garmin vs tomtom has been discussed in other threads. if you can find the # of people who have viewed this post, i'm sure you know your way around searching on the internet. good luck

1. Go to the Opera configuration page (replace "http://<whatever>" with "opera:config" -- without the quotes). Scroll down to "Proxy" and open that section by clicking on it. Make sure that the entries for "HTTP Server" and "HTTPS server" are empty and hit "Save" at the bottom of the section. Then scroll down to "User Agent," open that, set "Spoof UserAgent ID" to 3, and hit "Save." Finally, scroll down to "User Prefs," open it, set "Custom User-Agent" to "Mozilla/4.0(compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 6.0; en)" (again, without the quotes), and save it. That may be overkill; someone posted, for instance, that you get the same results by simply deleting the Custom User-Agent string instead of setting it to the value above. I haven't tried that. All I can say is that this combination of settings shows me the full web pages for all the sites I normally visit. YMMV.
2. No clue.
3. The display on the Fuze is 640x480 pixels, otherwise known as VGA resolution. A video encoded for VGA resolution will have the maximum sharpness of which the Fuze is capable. It may not be the best viewing experience, though, depending on what you are using on the Fuze to play the video and how it was encoded (the codec used, frame rate, etc.) -- you may experience performance problems such as "tearing," dropped frames, stuttering, etc. There's a lot of discussion currently about what's the best encoding for the Fuze, better drivers, the best player and settings therefor, etc. It's not a settled question nor an exact science. (I don't know what you mean by "How do I get to it?")
4. I use a free over-the-air turn-by-turn navigation service from amazegps.com. I think it does an excellent job for my needs. If you want to buy one, though, you should definitely consider OnCourse Navigator 8 (OCN8). I haven't used it, but the reviews I've seen are very enthusiastic.

I don't use Yahoo mail, but I see the normal HTML view of Gmail -- not the mobile version -- in Opera, using the settings I gave in the preceding message.
Try accessing your email from The Skyfire browser until someone outlines a full fox for you..
You can try using messaging/pocket outlook
You can also add Yahoo! Mail to messaging/pocket outlook, I have 4 accounts set up in pocket outlook/messaging GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and my works exchange mail. I would suggest setting these up with imap settings over pop3 settings.
GMail has instructions for this pretty much step my step. Yahoo! doesn't officially support imap on wm devices but i am using an imap server settings. Its a little tricky to get set up because WM likes to grab settings for pop3 first. You can by pass this by putting in a different domain [email protected], [email protected] and then proceed to manually set up the accounts. If you have OCD then you can fix the email address after you have finished setting it up in pocket outlook/messaging.
GMail
incoming mail server (imap)
imap.gmail.com
user name is your full email address.
outgoing mail server
smtp.gmail.com
check box outgoing server requires authentication
check box use same user name and password
Advanced settings(link on page where you put in outgoing mail server info)
check box require ssl for incoming
check box require ssl for outgoing
Yahoo!
incoming mail server (imap)
imap.next.mail.yahoo.com (it works!)
user name is your yahoo login name (ex abc)
outgoing mail server
smtp.mail.yahoo.com
check box outgoing server requires authentication
check box use same user name and password
Advanced settings(link on page where you put in outgoing mail server info)
check box require ssl for incoming
check box require ssl for outgoing
For Hotmail to work you have to install a cab (for stock Fuze rom)otherwise it will direct you to a web based version.
Setting the accounts up in messaging will also allow you to preview messages in the TF3d email tab.

I tried this and it still comes up on opera as the mobile version. So Wish I knew how to fix this. Now media net isn't my homepage. And media net won't even show up. Still need a fix then. I may have to just use xpressmail if I can't find a fix.
Can anyone tell me what the default settings are so I can go back to the way it was. Until there is a fix that works.

Sorry; it's been a couple of weeks since I did this so I had forgotten that it disabled MEdia net. (Personally I couldn't care less about MEdia net, so it was no loss at all for me to exchange that for seeing full web sites; that's why I forgot about it.) I don't know why your web site still comes up as the mobile version; as I said, this does the trick for all the sites I use.
well, Is there any way to get the settings back, cause it didn't fix the issue and want to go back then. I want to keep medianet. i may have to do express mail after all, since no one knows how to fix it for atleast yahoo mail.
I've just spent a few minutes searching through the forum and can't find the post that I remember where someone gave the original settings for those configuration items; maybe it was on some other board. In any event, the best I can suggest is that if no one tells you what the original settings were, you can make a backup using Sprite backup; hard reset the device; go to opera:config and write down the original settings; restore the backup; and then change the settings to what you wrote down from the fresh boot.
I found the post I was thinking of over on the AT&T forum. That only addresses the proxy server names, but I think that may be all you need to get back to MEdia Net. HTH.
Than fixed it but wish I could figure out what is the problem with yahoo mail and how to fix the whole mobile website thing.
I had the same issue with the zoom wheel. Not sure if this is what fixed it but, in Opera goto Settings - Dispaly. Check Auto Full Screen, Show Images & Block Pop-ups. Uncheck Mobile view.
Has been working correctly since.

Ok. How do I get there? I know the whole go into opera and go to opera:config but how do I get to the display like you did then? Everything that has anything about the display in the config is different. Thanks

This is in the "Settings" choice on the menu you get when you hit the button at the lower right of the screen and then hit the "menu" icon (the one furthest to the right at the bottom of the screen).
I just tried that too.The menu-display. the mobile view isn't checked and I still get the mobile view of the darn yahoo mail. Still don't know how to fix it and I believe paypal is the same.
Yeah, the "mobile display" option controls how Opera sizes and formats pages; it doesn't affect which page (mobile or regular) is being accessed. I don't know how Yahoo mail, etc., are detecting the Fuze as a mobile device; the user agent and proxy fixes take care of many/most pages, but there's obviously something else.

[Q] K9 email: Several questions

I have been using K9 to access four email accounts, all using push/imap (three of them using gmail/google apps).
I receive about 80 emails a day. Two of the accounts are far more active than the other two.
1. My accounts are all set to push, with polling off. Is that the proper setting for my situation?
2. Right now there is almost always a lag of several seconds when moving back from viewing a message to the unified folder. Is there a setting I can change which will help that?
3. Would battery performance be better if I had all my email forward to different folders on one account, with different identities to make sure I'm replying "from" the correct address?
Thanks in advance to those who respond.
(Phone is a Samsung Epic 4G).

Same here..4 accounts (but no gmail), push, poll off....
But never use unified folder...just did to test and it´s fast!
- local folder size -> 50
- always show images -> OFF
you tried last version K9 3.319 ?
I'm using the latest version indeed.
Any ideas?

K9 Email 1 exchange account 2 inboxes?

Hi! Sorry to interrupt the ICS frenzy but I would really appreciate your help.
Anybody using K9 for an Exchange Account? I keep getting 2 inboxes for the same 1 exchange account. Tried setting it up twice but same result. Anybody have this problem? Even better if you know a fix! I don't want to use stock email because then I must consent to giving IT dept authority to remotely wipe my phone whenever they feel like it ( or mess up).
Thanks!
There is another thread about duplicate emails, but my issue was only with the Unified Inbox. What was happening is that my Exchange account Inbox only shows one email being downloaded and displayed in the Inbox, but two of every email would list in the Unified Inbox. On K9 Mail's site, Issue 3486 described my issue exactly. Someone there posted a solution, and I responded on that site with a detailed way of getting around the issue. I thought I would repost here as several fellow Android users here may come across this issue.
The main issue is that Exchange accounts may list two Inbox folders that are synced, and therefore two of every email show up in the Unified Inbox. Unchecking the "Unify" option for the second inbox gets around two emails displaying.
To do this, first open K9 to the account selection screen.
- Select the account that shows the duplicate (most likely your Exchange account).
- Bring up the menu using the Menu button on your Android device, and select "Folder List"
- If two Inbox items are listed, select and hold the second "Inbox". Then select "Folder Settings".
- Uncheck the last item in the Folder Settings ("Unify").
->If two Inbox items are NOT listed, there may be a different folder with two items listed or your problem is different (sorry!).
I also turned off syncing of the second Inbox folder so that I also am not downloading any items to it. I hope this helps.
I don't use the unified inbox for precisely that reason. I have my email set to poll every 5 minutes.
I long pressed the bottom inbox to get its settings and unchecked every box but it must still by syncing because each incoming email first shows up as 1 in the notification bar then quickly changes to 2.
Thanks! I'm surprised they haven't fixed this.

[Q][4.4 Stock Email] how to delete email account

Just wondering how one can delete an email account as a whole after setting it up?

This is not very intuitive, but here is how you delete an account:
1.) Go to settings
2.) Scroll down to accounts and look for an account labeled "IMAP" or "POP3" (depending on how you set it up).
3.) Select the IMAP/POP3 account
4.) Select the account you want to delete.
5.) Press the settings menu in the upper right and select "Remove account"
Hope that helps!
Rob
thanks chicken, i figured it eventually as well.
its indeed not very intuitive.

[Q] Exchange Email Device ID Change

Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me out. I have my work email setup on my phone using their webmail address. If I use the standard address, i am required to have Maas360 installed, which is not an option with me being rooted. Anyways, if I have the email program I use, which is either Nine or Mail Wise, setup for ActiveSync, my business server will catch it and block me. So, I have to setup the email app to scan for new emails every X minutes.
The problem I am running into, is I did not know that I had to have ActiveSync turned off, so now my device is banned when using Nine mail. So, I tried the same with Mail Wise, and got banned again. Now, on my third app, AquaMail, I have realized the problem, and its working great. However, I would prefer to use Nine mail. When trying to go back into Nine and recreate my account, i get an error that my device is blocked. I get the same error on Mail Wise. Both list a different Device ID. NineXXXXXXX and MailWiseXXXXXXXX. Is there a way to change this ID? I tried creating a new ID in Titanium Backup and that didn't change the IDs in the mail apps.
Thanks to anyone who can help!
you could ask the app developer (he should know it^^) or ask you sys admin. Normally it isn't that hard to unblock a phone (had done that enough).
I tried that. Sent an email a few days ago and haven't heard back.
Do you got a solution? I have the same problem, thx
Reply after very long time, but maybe could help someone else...
Nine email device ID is stored in a text file /data/data/com.ninefolders.hd3/deviceName. Could be changed with root rights. Changes become effective after re-start of Nine
Hey man, i'm in the same boat.
Thanks so much for sharing the solution.
Can you help me how to setup Nine so that it doesn't get blocked again?
Bump
Bump. I have the same issue. Any solution for non-rooted phones?

I recently tried to give Nine a DeviceID by amending this file. The Device ID is saved in the file, but Nine is always announcing the hexadecimal equivalent of that ASCII Device ID to the server. So if your approved ID by the server is in hex format, you can reverse it and put that into the file.
If not (which is my case), I would appreciate anyone who can indicate if there is a string that enforces Nine to keep the Device ID of the file without hex-transformation...
