K9 Email 1 exchange account 2 inboxes? - Thunderbolt General

Hi! Sorry to interrupt the ICS frenzy but I would really appreciate your help.
Anybody using K9 for an Exchange Account? I keep getting 2 inboxes for the same 1 exchange account. Tried setting it up twice but same result. Anybody have this problem? Even better if you know a fix! I don't want to use stock email because then I must consent to giving IT dept authority to remotely wipe my phone whenever they feel like it ( or mess up).
Thanks!

There is another thread about duplicate emails, but my issue was only with the Unified Inbox. What was happening is that my Exchange account Inbox only shows one email being downloaded and displayed in the Inbox, but two of every email would list in the Unified Inbox. On K9 Mail's site, Issue 3486 described my issue exactly. Someone there posted a solution, and I responded on that site with a detailed way of getting around the issue. I thought I would repost here as several fellow Android users here may come across this issue.
The main issue is that Exchange accounts may list two Inbox folders that are synced, and therefore two of every email show up in the Unified Inbox. Unchecking the "Unify" option for the second inbox gets around two emails displaying.
To do this, first open K9 to the account selection screen.
- Select the account that shows the duplicate (most likely your Exchange account).
- Bring up the menu using the Menu button on your Android device, and select "Folder List"
- If two Inbox items are listed, select and hold the second "Inbox". Then select "Folder Settings".
- Uncheck the last item in the Folder Settings ("Unify").
->If two Inbox items are NOT listed, there may be a different folder with two items listed or your problem is different (sorry!).
I also turned off syncing of the second Inbox folder so that I also am not downloading any items to it. I hope this helps.

I don't use the unified inbox for precisely that reason. I have my email set to poll every 5 minutes.
I long pressed the bottom inbox to get its settings and unchecked every box but it must still by syncing because each incoming email first shows up as 1 in the notification bar then quickly changes to 2.
Thanks! I'm surprised they haven't fixed this.

[Q] Homescreen Contact Shortcut defaults

Does anyone know how to change the defaults for a homescreen contact shortcut?
When you click the shortcut to a contact on the homescreen, several options come up at the top of the screen depending on what methods of communication you have for that person: Phone, Contact details, Text, Email, Map...
If there is more than one option for a particular communication method (say, you have both corporate email and gmail setup, when you click on the email icon, it will ask you which to use. When you click on "set default" it will always use what you chose.
Problem is, I chose the wrong method when I clicked "set default" and now I can't change it back. It wants to use my corporate account to send with rather than my gmail accound. And since it pulls up corporate email when you click on the email icon, it won't let you change the "from" to anything other than a corporate (exchange) account. (I have 2, and both show up, but not gmail.)
Anyway, it's a long read, but I was hoping someone knew how to reset the default.
I have tried:
- removing/recreating the shortcut
- changing my default email method in email accounts
- changing contact detailsm addresses, etc
Any help?
I am not sure if I am understanding your question(s) exactly correct. Try these and see if it helps.
Answer to your first question.
1. Click on contact shortcut.
2. Select "contacts" icon.
3. Press "menu" button to bring up options
4. select "Mark as default"
From here you can select all the default contact numbers, emails and addresses.
If I understood your last question, this should help.
1. Launch email app.
2. Long click on account you want to make default.
3. Scroll down and select "account settings"
4. There should be a selection (4th one down) for "Default Account". Check the radio button.
The default account should not be switched to the currently selected email account.

Okay, this will set the default for that contact, but I guess what I am missing is the Gmail icon in the list of contact options when I click on the shortcut.
I want to send from my Gmail account to this contact rather than from corporate, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make Gmail my default...
This has me thinking now... maybe I need to drop and recreate the contact in google contacts and remove from my corporate contacts.

So you want to add an extra menu item for gmail in the shortcut drop down menu?
Not sure how you would do this but I think it's a good idea.

I overcame this by adding my gmail as an account for the email manger instead of using the gmail specific application that comes with android. Now when I launch the email app I get a list of 3 accounts (gmail, hotmail, corporate). The currently default account has a check next to it. I have mine on gmail during the weekend and corporate during the week (Tasker FTW). The downside to this is that gmail seems to run a bit slower at times (few seconds) when syncing but not enough to make me change it back. I like having all the accounts in one place with the same management and notifications.

...just read the post again...I think i get it!
You want your default outgoing account to be based on the specific contact?
As in:
You email Joe Smith with gmail by default and Jane Andrews with corporate by default without making changes to account settings.

[Q] Gmail-app sync scope

Hello,
I just wanted to ask if there is any option to define how far the gmail sync should go. One morning I checked the data traffic on my phone and read 4 MB, which was in my opinion generated by receiving a huge mail containing graphics in its body. When I went to the gmail app to see that mail, after selecting it from the list, phone didn't indicate any data traffic going on. So I suppose all the mails are downloaded entirely right as they're received.
So, is there some option to sync the conversation list only, and let me choose which mails I want to download and read?
thanks

[Q] Assitance with contact issue

Hello,
New android user here after 4 years with an iPhone. I am extremely happy with my skyrocket and have no plans on going anywhere
Slight problem I could use some help with. I am a gmail user and keep 'my contacts' pretty organized and updated since this was the contact list that i synced with my iPhone. I would have thought moving to an android would be even easier, however I have a slight problem that I cannot seem to figure out.
I synced my main google account and chose 'contacts' as one of the items to sync. My contact list was imported just fine, however, upon composing of a new message, when I type a few characters, rather than attempting to match those characters with one of 'my contacts', the system seems to pull suggestions from every single email address i've ever used in my gmail account (over 1400). Obviously I would only rather the system pull from 'my contacts', but I have no idea how to fix this. I've deleted the contact syncing and restarted the phone, verified that there were no contacts in my contact list, but still got the same results when attempting to compose a text message.
Is there a way to delete those contact suggestions for good?
Much appreciation
under groups in the contacts app select your account and arrow down. I believe u can then select exactly ehat syncs. You will have to delete all, and I mean. ALL the contacts on your phone, becuz all 1400 emails on there. Then resync with mew settings. That's should work.

Thanks, I will try that. Do you know of a way to bulk delete contacts?

Some Questions and possible bugs

I upgraded from a HTC Imagio running Windows Mobile 6.5 to the Samsung Galaxy S3 and it is my first foray into the Android world, so I hope you can help with the following. As you can see, it was a big step up the ladder of mobile operating systems!
1. If I have a name prefix for my contact in the contact list, like Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr., the name does not autocomplete for that contact from the phone keypad. When I enter the letters of the first or last name on the phone keypad, the contact does not show up. However, if I delete the name prefix and leave it blank, it shows up fine. Is there some setting to have all the contacts show up or is it a bug? Is it happening for others too?
2. On the Windows phone, I had a reminder application which showed a list of all reminders. I could set the reminder to repeat after any number of days/weeks/years. However, in the Android Calendar, when I set an event, I am unable to set the number of days/weeks/months/years it has to repeat. For example, I need an event to repeat every 365 days (calendar with no leap day) but I cannot set it on my phone or in GMail. Also, when the alarm goes off, I would like to be reminded again after a day or a few hours or a few minutes until I dismiss the notification so I can have the remidner go off a few days before the event as a reminder. I don't know if that is possible too. I looked at a couple of apps from the Play Store but could not find one which does everything. Anyone know of a trick to get this to work?
Update: DGT GTD & To-Do List with its recent updates now does what I need. Thanks to the author for adding the features.
3. When I check my gmail in the web browser, I am unable to delete the mails. I touch the trash icon but it stays highlighted but does not delete the mail. Is that a bug or am I again doing something wrong? I have different gmail accounts that I would like to check on the phone without transferring contacts and calendar entries.
Update: Looks like a bug in the stock web browser. GMail works as expected in Chrome browser
4. Is there a clear writeup of how the calendar and contacts sync between gmail and the phone? I had transferred all my contacts from my Windows mobile phone to gmail and they showed up on my S3 when I set up the gmail account. However, they would not transfer to my phone. I had to export the contacts to a file on my phone and then import the contacts into my phone. Maybe I do not need the contacts to reside on the phone? I was worried that if I was in an area with poor or no signal reception, then I may not be able to view the contacts if they were only on my gmail account and not on the phone.
4a. Similarly, I would like to know how the calendar entries from gmail can be pulled on to the phone.
Thanks in advance for your help and patience in reading the above! I have a lot to learn but hope I can get my phone to work the way I would enjoy. If you can suggest any resource for reading other than XDA and Android Central, that would be great too.
Oops. This should have been posted in the Q&A Forum. Mods, can you please move it if that is where it belongs? Thanks!

Contacts in MESSAGING not in 'Official' Contact list - how to clean up?

I have a weird problem - when I go to Messaging and select 'Contacts' to pick a recipient, I see duplicate, triplicate and even 4 contact selections for the same person, and even 'odd' contacts, like for email addresses. But when I go to APPS / CONTACTS, or if I go to Gmail/Contacts, I only see one (and none of the odd ones).
Does anyone know how to 1) clean up the SMS contact list or 2) only have it refer to the 'real' CONTACT list when selected or 3) how to merge them into one contact? I never know if I picked the correct one.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

UPDATE: I figured out that these contacts are stored in Gmail as "OTHER CONTACTS". Not sure how they got there but after deleting them while in Gmail on the PC and SYNCing my S3, they disappeared. Apparently they only appear in Messaging, not in the CONTACTS under APPS or when searching for contacts while making a phone call....

A lot of times those are the other contact emails and stuff you never linked and now will have to find those addresses that you have deleted. This is what link contacts is for. You link them together and then save as one in google. Hopefully you merged them together in Gmail instead of deleting them.

I never saw any option to link them and in a lot of cases I already had the email address in the 'regular' CONTACT list. That is what was most confusing. If I selected that one, then they would not get the SMS. And a bunch of these were totally unwanted since they were only email addresses send to ???? (some started with sale, or customerservice, or....).
Bottom line, I no longer have crap in my 'Messaging Contact List' and don't have to worry if I selected the correct one (which, in the case of Messaging, would be the one with their mobile number).
Thanks for the reply, and Happy New Year.
