Home WiFi connection problems

Hey world,
I'm having trouble with my Roger's branded Samsung Captivate SGH i-896's wifi. The phone is completely stock. When I connect to my wireless AP at home it doesn't seem to always work on the captivate... I had a htc magic before running all sorts of different roms and never had a problem like this before.
What happens is that I would connect to wifi at home and it would work, but if I leave wifi on the phone for an extended period of time and go back to the phone, wifi stops working.
It would show that i've successfully connected to my AP but no data would pass through my phone.
Disconnecting and reconnecting to the AP doesn't seem to work, the only way to fix it is to restart the phone. I'm not experiencing this problem with any of my laptops, netbooks or cellphones at home.
Security type is WPA2.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Anyone have an idea what could be causing this problem?

I have had this problem intermittently, So has my wife on her Captivate. No idea what causes it though. It's a pain because if WiFi is on, but not working, 3G doesn't kick in so apps just don't work.

my wife's captivate has this issue as well (but I don't on my captivate). It will work for a short period and then stop. We have a fios wifi router, not sure if that matters at all.
restarting the router and/or phone usually fixes the problem

I'm having the same problem on my new Captivate. Tried it on several different networks with the same results (shows connected but no data will transmit) before I took it back to ATT. They scratched their collective heads and rebooted (powered down and removed battery), which is a temporary fix, but its been working for two days now and I turn off WiFi unless I know I'm in range of a working hot spot.

I was having this same problem until I set my wifi policy to never sleep, dont know if it is a fix for everyone but it definitely fixed my problem.

Glad to hear I'm not alone!
I've been fighting with this issue for over a week now, it suddenly started occurring. I wonder if it was an app we all loaded that suddenly made this condition occur? If you look the phone is requesting an IP and if the IP given back by the router is the same one it already has the phone doesn't acknowledge that command. If the router is rebooted then a new IP is given, or what is considers new. This is a HUGE problem and I've put in some time looking at it, but one of the problems is that is comes and goes. What your router log and you'll the phone request an IP over and over again, all the while the router saying "here, take the same one you already have back".
If you use the app "Network Info II" you'll see the problem when it displays a "Device IP" at the top of 192.168.1.254 and WiFi IP address will be the correct one, in my case 192.168.1.108. When we have these two IP numbers showing differently the device is hosed. Rebooting will put them back in sync, but that is not the proper solution, we need to get to the bottom of this! I understand the WiFi IP address showing at the bottom but the "Device IP" I do not, why the difference? How can we affect the "Device IP", where does the device get that IP address?

Try the app called WiFi Fixer. That did the trick for me. There seems to be a bug of some sort that causes the phone to not release the IP address. Or you could use static IP but that worked only for a while.

The phone gets the device IP from either the service provider (when using edge/3g), or from the router (when using wifi). If an IP address is not provided, it uses a default IP address, which is always outside of the standard private IP block.
There are two ways to assign an IP address: dynamically and via static IP address. Dynamic = assigned by the router, static = pre-programmed by you. I don't know if you can set a static IP address on a phone, as I've never tried it.

I had a zyxel wireless n router in my house and could never get the wifi to work on my captivate. If it did work it lasted 5 seconds... I was really pissed.
I was thrilled to see that buffalo is now back in the market and with dd-wrt firmwares... So I picked up the most expensive one they had for $89.99.
it has a dlna client built in as well as bit torrent, also lets you use a spare usb hard drive as a nas... things i don't know....
However loaded up the wireless settings in 2 minutes and voila... perfectly working on my captivate... I have also found that this router works flawlessly with G+N devices and it is gigabit. I was able to stream 1080p video from my synology 411+ to my ps3, download on the captivate and be on two other laptops at the same time without any issues... I am very very impressed with the buffalo.

ohh and my laptops are connected fully at 300 mbps with this router wirelessly...
very very happy with it.... Oh and forgot to mention... once this started working with the buffalo i noticed my batter was much better running on wifi all the time. Also wifi file explorer pro works flawlessly.. I was able to upload a 700 meg movie to my captivate wirelessly in about 2 minutes.

WiFi fixer did not fix my problem as well. After turning WiFi on the device IP remains 192.168.1.254 while the WiFi IP is correctly set at 192.168.1.108. When these two IPs are different WiFi does not work and WiFi Fixer doesn't appear to see any problems here.
The router here is an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato and I'm fairly confident that isn't the problem. This is more like an internal routing issue inside the phone.

I don't think it's brand of router that matters... maybe a setting on our routers can fix this...?

I've searched the internet to find a sol'n but it looks like this wifi problem is a widespread problem for almost all galaxy S devices... ppl have made temporary workarounds (ie. setting a static ip) but ultimately, there is no fix for this problem.... gg...

It appears to go beyond Samsung Galaxy, I've seen the same issue with Nexus and Motorola Droids. VERY frustrating!

had same problem on my milestone .. it is not a bug , wifi goes to sleep , its the way your phone is set up ... as its quoted here set it to never sleep and make sure your not using soem kind of app that will overwrite that setting ( like battery manager that for example could turn off wifi to save battery)
very easy to double check once your wifi is not working , go in wifi settings scan and check the wifi access points you normally use you ll see its set to disabled ..
the bug is it doesnt resume like it should. or gets re-enabled however you wanna call it . just re-enable it voila ! no reboot needed .

This may be my first post here, so be kind...
Running Cognition v2.3b3 and Linksys WRT54G router. WIFI was working fine until I flashed to Cog 2.2 Then I could only use WIFI tethering, no other WIFI connection would work.
I tried setting up static IP and setting sleep to never. Didn't work. Changed router security from WEP to WPA Personal and got it working.
Phone settings: Go to Wi-Fi Settings, click menu, and goto advanced. I don't know if all the settings here are necessary, but I'll post what I have.
Port = 80
Use statis IP = checked
IP address = 192.168.1.103 (check your router assignments for an open address)
Gateway = 192.168.1.1
Netmask = 255.255.255.0
DNS 1 = (check your router config. For my router it's located under the Status, then router tabs.)
Router settings: (Under the Wireless, Wireless Security tab)
Security Mode = WPA Personal
WPA Algorithms = TKIP
WPA Shared Key = (your access key used when you attempt to athenticate from your phone)
Group Key Renewal = 3600 seconds
Write the access key down so you can use it to reconfigure the other wireless devices on your home network.

changing my router fixed the issue.
I have wifi running on my captivate for 8 hours at a time at work now and at home. Not one hiccup or disconnect, works 100%.
99% of wireless routers are crap. I work in IT and have dealt with most major brands and had been running linksys wireless routers with dd-wrt on them...
if you got a spare 90 bucks.. go to your microcenter or place where they sell buffalo routers and pick one up. If it doesn't work.. you can return it.

This worked for me

Going to a static IP worked for a few hours and then it stopped working as before. WiFi is set to not sleep.
When I ran the router without security I did not have this problem and since adding WPA2 w/AES+TKIP the problem has developed. The iPod Touch doesn't have a problem with it, nor my laptop or wireless ipTV set-top box, only the Android. I'm leaning towards setting up another router without security, on a different channel, and see if the problem disappears again. Here in 2010 we shouldn't be having this issue, but look on other forums and you'll find similar complaints with other brands of Android phones, it's not a Samsung thing.

Hidden SSID

WTF!! Anyone know hot to get the tablet to connect to a network with SSID hidden. Tried 3 routers, no deal. Running vegan 5.1, would swith back to TNT if necessary.

I had a similar issue. I have two routers: The westell, it connected to no worries. The Cisco/Linksys I couldn't connect to to save my life. As soon as I let the ssid broadcast, it picked it up and connected. I can even re-hide it again, and it will connect.
I've tried a few ROM's on my Incredible, and the same thing. It connects to the Westell, no worries. But I have to broadcast the SSID for the phone to connect to the Linksys. It turns out Android is somewhat well-known for this. and I believe it to be a system issue, not specific to any ROM or branch.
In reality though, NOT broadcasting the SSID doesn't add much in the way of privacy. A script-kiddie with a WinMo 5 fone can find and connect to them. I used to use my Wizzie to find and connect to WiFi networks when I traveled. Just make sure you are using a secure connection like WPA2 or something.

Tell me about it it drives me insane!!! I'm using a dlink dsl-2740b with/ without MAC filter and i can't get it to find my hidden SSID.
did the kernel mod 2.6.32.28 - from pershoot still no go. Anyone else found a fix?

I'm running an old Linksys WRT54v1.1 with DD-WRT installed...
Non-Broadcast SSID, MAC Filtering, WPA2 -- no issues...
Worked for me right away....on all ROMs (so far) -- Stock, TnTLite, & Vegan...My phone has Cyanogenmod so I'd assume it will work as well...
I'd highly recommend DD-WRT as a new firmware for your Cisco/Linksys if it is a supported model...

I know it's totally not the point of this post but, exactly.
It in fact creates more problems than it does any type of good on any level at all because it makes it more trouble for you, the user to connect to your own network. Some chipsets have issues connecting to hidden SSIDs as well, as shows with the Tablet. Phones can have the problem too. Computers less so just because of the detailed configurations of the software.
You don't even have to be a script kiddie or hacker, there are easily downloaded, well known tools that show hidden SSIDs, along with mac addresses of any and all routers and also which sniff wifi signals. So pretty much anyone that knows more than how to check emails can get into your network if they need/want to and you're not using WEP. WEP is of course only a step up and still simple to get into with just that much more effort (not much, at all).
In these days and times in terms of privacy, if you're not at the very least using WPA with AES then just go ahead and leave it open.

I have searched this forum and can't seem to find any good responses relating to my question. I am mostly wondering if anyone else is having problems with the data transfer speeds using a router with WPA personal key?
Here is my issue: I have WPA personal set up and I can connect fine to the router. But the wifi bars always stay white and data transfer is so incredibly slow that it pretty much isn't connected. It's really strange. Because I can use websharing app to download and upload files to my device on the computer, but the phone can't use anything else besides that. It never connects to google servers and the browsers don't work, or any app that requires data. So my problem is that data slows to a crawl for whatever reason. My phone has been like this since I have bought it. I have tried many many multiples factory wipes and different roms, nothing helps. The strange thing is that every great once in a while it actually works, just out of the blue.
I read a thread on here related to nexus s wifi issues and one guy found that the nexus doesnt seem to like wireless n with WPA personal. So I experimented and made my wifi open and the phone works fine! As soon as I add a passkey, it doesn't work. I have tried WPA personal 2, and that doesn't work either.
Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

The network at my house has a WPA encryption, my NS has always worked fine with it. Some networks seem to just be more troublesome than others. I'm sure there's a technical reason, I just don't know enough about the technology to speculate.

It's a very annoying problem. My brother's nexus one works fine, so this has me confused. I can't figure it out.

I had the same issue... changing the routers 802.11 mode from B,G,N to just B,G worked for me...

I don't have issue with WPA, but I don't use N ...
Probably this is related to N only?

I use WPA2 and N. No issues. I'm on Apple branded access points (Airport Extremes).

In order to get N speeds you need to use WPA2 security. I was having the same problems with WPA and my NS losing connection most of the time even being next to the router. Once I changed the security to WPA-2 I now get N speeds and it always stayed connected.

i'm on WPA2 and it has no problem connecting to my WiFi N

check your password, check your bandwidth, check your settings, check your authentication method, check your DHCP, check your filter, check if blocking is enabled, check the signal strength, check for wave pollution, check for... everything

WPA2 + Wireless N = Good
WPA + Wireless b/g = Good
WPA + Wireless b/g/n = Bad
Make sure you do not have wireless N in any form (N alone, b/g/n or g/n) enabled with WPA security. Wireless N must use WPA2.

Well I had WPA2 working last night. I had the phone turned off and charging when I went to sleep. Woke up this morning and same problem. What the hell is wrong with my phone?! Turning off wireless security on the router instantly solves the connection issue. Dammit.

does it work properly on WPA1 ?

No it does not. It seems it doesn't like password protected wifi at my house. I need to try a friends house or something. But my wireless settings are very basic and the phone works on it sometimes which makes no sense.

[Q] Wifi signal high but no internet connection (Samsung Galaxy i5500)

I just upgraded my router to a wireless one. Firstly, it's connected via ethernet to a PC and it is happily getting internet access.
On my i5500 I get a strong wifi signal. Wifi Analyser shows the signal at max constantly. I can also connect with Gmote and it works just fine.
The problem is that I can't actually access the net at all from the phone.
So basically I know that my phone is talking to the router with no problem. It's just getting out onto the internet.
Does anyone know of a solution?

try logging into your router and change the broadcast channel to something else and test it again. it should be something like a/b/g mode... define a single channel and see if it works.

I had originally thought that was working. It did for the first few minute where I had connection but then it just dropped.
I have noticed that I have some very small bursts where I can connect.
Do you think that trying the different channels may be the solution?

I have the same problem. Have you found a solution?

Still no solution. I went through every channel and every encryption method.
So far I've found that having the channel set on 'Auto' and then disabling encryption seems to give me internet connection through WIFI for at least the initial period but it eventually drops. But that's also not always.
I've also Googled it to death and found nothing. If you do find the solution please post it here and I'll do the same.
Maybe we can help each other.

make sure you entered the right password of wlan.
use a pc to connect the router and in the wlan you'll find the password.

Ok, just to clarify. My phone connects to the Router via WLAN. In fact I can use Gmote to control my PC. So the WLAN connection is great.
The problem is accessing the internet when using that connection.

I had similar problems with a router last year. I resolved the issues by flashing DD-WRT firmware. The manufacturer's firmware was junk.

I had that idea but they don't have firmware for my router yet. I have asked them if they intend to make one.

Any chance the firewall on your phone is blocking your browser from using the Wifi?

Ok I've tried some new stuff and they I've had the longest connectivity so far (which is about half an hour).
First I made sure my Wifi wasn't set to turn off when the screen goes to sleep. Second, according to a forum I read, Netgear recommends channel 7. If that channels doesn't work try 1,3,6,9,11,13.
I then disabled encryption.
Fortunately no one near me uses Wifi at all and I've got the kind of walls that stop the signal from getting outside.
Anyway. It's working so far but I'll monitor and report.
[edit] And I forgot. The router was checking for firmware but it wasn't actually finding so I downloaded it myself. Seems that also made a difference.

Ok. I can confirm after 2 and a half hours my internet connection is stable. I even left half way through and when I came back it connected perfectly.
So as a summary here's what I did:
1) Get latest firmware
2) Change channel to 7
3) Disable encryption
I will change encryption and see if it still works

I need help. I was talking to a guy that claimed to be a developer of Splashtop, which allows you to run your laptop remotely from your tablet. The app was initially created for iphone/ipad, but is available in the Android market. I was so impressed with the app and how fast and seamless it runs your laptop programs that I purchased without question. Well I have a question: how do you connect to it remotely while away from home? I have turned on laptop, turned off auto shut down, and turned on splashtop on the pc. Everytime I have tried to connect away from home I get an "out of reach" message. I have been as little as 5 miles away. If anyone out there has knowledge of what I may be doing wrong please let me know. The guy told me this should work from anywhere just as long as my computer is turned on and running splashtop.

Yes, great at home, but I can just use my laptop. If I can get it to actually work when I am away from home, then it makes my Xoom THE BEST thing to have! I get so tired of carrying my laptop around, this would help.

Yeah i got the splashtop and to make it work outside your home network, you must do port forwarding.
i uninstalled it because now, i keep getting drop connections and if i reconnect, it gives me error saying it is already being accessed by another device. this was both on my home network and accessing it from the outside. it was great but not anymore.

For the price it's probably not as good as some of it's competitors, which are closer to 5x the price of this. I would attribute it's lack of quality to the problems such as devices being already connected etc.
As for distance, it makes no difference, the most important thing to do is make sure that if you have a router, it must have the necessary ports forwarded to the computer you want to connect to.
Personally I try to avoid remote desktop and instead try make everything i might want from home accessible via web-apps or various servers.

I don't have the app so I'm just giving some general comments:
Im assuming it works over wifi?
1) Maybe you need to enter the ip address of your home and name a port? then get the router to port forward to your laptop?
2) If it works over wifi, then if your router has the option set up a VPN. then connect to it when ur away from home - then its exactly as if ur xoom is connected to the local network itself

Port forwarding is a new concept to me, so not sure how to do it, but you guys have given me a new thing to Google. Also, I did have my internet run through a router, but I disconnected it because I on have my home internet through ATT Uverse and didn't have anything that really needed to run through it. If you have some quick directions for me, then I will be grateful!

I assume this is similar to Wyse Pocket, and i have never had issues connecting via 3G. Is this a better app?

well your router gets its internet then shares it via with the rest of your computers.
Port forwarding takes all the data from a specific port and forwards it to a specific device.
to start you have to assign ur computer a static ip address (again through your router) then forward all data to it. sorry i cant be more precise but the procedure varies between routers. I have never used the ATT Uverse. Honestly the best thing to do is have a browse thorugh ur manual or google for a guide

These apps were made with very different goals in mind...
I use both of these apps for what I believe they were designed for and I'm happy with both. The WYSE PocketCloud app supports RDP / VNC connections but SplashTop doesn't. It's not even really designed for WAN access but rather just LAN access. Yes, unlike PocketCloud you'll need to use port forwarding to use it in the likely unsupported WAN configuration.
SplashTop runs beautifully on my LAN but I don't expect it to work outside those parameters. I think SplashTop has far superior frame rate / audio sync for watching Videos (with / without audio). Is it the optimized support for the Tegra 2? I don't know, but it works and works well. It lets me watch Hulu, NetFlix, etc with rarely a hiccup. PocketCloud can't touch that ATM.
Even though PocketCloud's framerate and audio sync are MUCH worse by comparison to SplashTop making it unusable (even when on my LAN connected by WiFi) for the purpose of watching video through it, I don't begrudge it since I don't believe that's what it's for. It has an awesome UI (I prefer it somewhat over SplashTop's) and works very well over RDP. When the Terminal Services update emerges from closed beta, it will be even more awesome.
These apps probably shouldn't even be compared as they are meant to do different things, different ways. Each works for what they were designed for. Neither is perfect. In my case, both were very easy to setup. Any difficulties I had were caused by my own firewall setup. Neither were expensive IMO.

Has anyone figured out how to connect using mycloud when you are away from home? I've tried port forwarding and the portchecker from portforward.com verifies that my ports are open and are forwarded properly but I still can't seem to connect using my modem's WAN ip.
My modem/router model is smc d3gn and I am connecting directly to it with my computer.
I've also tried using the modem's built in vpn function and I can connect to the vpn (accessing the router setup page from my tablet shows me logged in with a pptp ip so I know that I'm connected but splashtop still refuses to connect.)
Hope someone can figure this out soon... I've tried the experimental locator thing using my gmail account but I'm not sure if it does anything.
