If you have "bad" 3G reception... - Captivate General

Try going to your phone and type in *#2263#, go to WCDMA and choose the 850MHz band exclusively and go back and choose all the GSM bands. EVERYTHING except the 1900MHz WCDMA band.
I've noticed that my phone tries to hang onto a one bar 1900 connection than rather switch to a five bar 850 one.
Serendipity 5.7, latest speed mod and JL2 modem

Not every area uses both.
Though it is pretty well known that the non captivate modems show a preference for the 1900 band.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

well some areas do and its fun to see if your i9000 modem could be giving you better reception. I know that at school I only get one bar of 1900 and four-five of 850. I expect other people are in the same scenario

"Selection is restricted" message on stock ROM.

on stock Rome you won't have this problem

Well, your title and original post make no distinction that this info is just for modded ROM users. That's one of my gripes about this place. Yeah, there's lots of great info, but often it is very confusing and little is said about who it is aimed at because the posters assume everyone is at the same level of understanding. I'm not picking on you, specifically.

I know Engadget and Phonedog did articles on the fact that these phones have HSDPA listed in the settings, instead of HSPA+. When Engadget contacted AT&T they said something like they would explain it after the phone is launched. From HSDPA to UMTS? Please let us know if this setting has changed in your phone?

What do you mean? Did it switch to UMTS and go back to HSDPA?
i got HSDPA
I'm getting UMTS.
it will change depending on what tower and equipment you are connected to ...
as soon as one set of equipment on a tower gets loaded you get moved down to the next lower (older) equipment ... so to speak ...
also weather can affect it ... antennas can freeze over making it not always work with as good coverage as it should be ... because of high winds...
the list can go on and on ...
yea it did switch back on its own. perhaps doing some system upgrades
if you watch it enough, you will see it can switch hundreds of times throughout the day ...
im less then a mile from the tower dude shouldnt be switching and flat land
unless at&t is doing something to their network. right now im showing HSDPA.

Not a weather issue. Not a terrain issue. I'm in NYC. 5 blocks from a tower. Never switched back and forth. It was HSDPA till yesterday since the 17th. It's gotta be an ATT issue. Who knows what theyre up to?

Well it looks like mines back to HSDPA. This is strange. What's the diff between HSDPA & UMTS?
Hsdpa is 3.6Mbps, umts is 384kbps. Hsdpa is a newer add on to 3g which is considered 3.5g. Umts is just the original 3g specification.

Slow hspa+

I'm in San Francisco right now and am clearly in AT&T's 4g territory. Well I'm only pulling 3mb down on a speed test. And my buddy who is sitting right next to me with his iPhone 4 is pulling 4.5 down. I thought the iPhone 4 was only hspa and not even plus?
Is it possible ATT is throttling me because I dont have a "4G" specific plan?

A data plan is of course, always going to be a data plan. There is no difference from one plan to another AFAIK besides 2GB and 4GB or if you're grandfathered for unlimited.
Just obviously with software updates etc. to enable "4G".
I'm up here in MT and I barely touch 1.5Mbps if I'm lucky. My friend has the same issue, and AT&T keeps telling me it's because MT is a "new acquisition". BS I've had the service for almost 3 months now. Learn to put up more towers!

Wells there's not much I can do about it now. I'm in the back seat of a car going 80 miles an hour towards a non '4G' area.
I was certain I flashed the right radio. I have the H emblem next to my service indicator.
Can anyone that has experience with san Francisco confirm my speeds are unusually low? Also does anyone know if the iPhone is hspa+?

3 months is not a long time when you think about it. It takes 3 years and about 2.9 million dollars to put up one single tower.

I saw the the thread about editing the build prop yes. I just checked att coverage maps for 4g and Sacramento is now in the coverage zone. Should now be seeing hspa+ speeds here. I'll do a test when I get home but I'm willing bet my roommates iPhone will still pull faster speeds than me. I will also get on the phone with att and find out if i need a different plan. Comparing the iphone to the inspire is not really fair as the iphone doesnt use the same apn settings, and they also have a reserved amount of bandwith set aside for iphones only. Not to mention they seem to go faster due to alot of things being cached on Apples servers which the iphone connects to first so it seems like they can pull data faster but it is not what it seems.
Ah, I'm not the only one pulling down slower speeds than other devices. My GF's Infuse consistently pulls down 6-7 mbps while my Inspire, at the same time and location, will pull down 3-4. My build prop is edited, and I've tried other radios (and rils) with not much luck. Is this a device capability issue?
The only thing I haven't done is mess with APNs much. I feel as though it won't change anything, but eventually I'll try that as well.

I would try that, As it can have a great impact on your connection. I could set you up with the old apn settings and you would pull edge speeds. So it only goes to reason that the APN settings might have a large thing to do with it.

I'm going to look around at the speeds others are getting. I just can't seem to get more than 3-5 mbps. I know my area is capable of it because my GF's Infuse gets 5-8 mbps consistently, and at the same time I test mine. Weird.
I'll wait for compelling results before I change mine, because I've been modding heavily the last few days and I'm exactly not in the testing mood.

G2x supposedly does NOT contain AT$T 3G bands as previously advertised. As for home coverage, T-Mo is supposed to be launching an in-home signal booster for free (with 2-yr contract, probably doesn't effect upgrade timeline but haven't verified that) pretty soon. I think within the next week.

My understanding is the booster needs to be connected to your broadband internet router to work. So you will be using your internet bandwidth to use mobile voice and data. What a scam...
And any one visiting you (or you neighbor) with a t-mobile connection will use that signal (your internet) and pay t-mobile for that.

Hopefully your "source" isn't an otherwise reputable source of information because you (they) couldn't be more wrong. I have been a part of the beta for these boosters for the past 6 months. All it does is take a weak 3G signal (which means you must get 3G somewhere in your house for this to work) and amplifies it throughout your house. In my case in an upstairs window I got a weak 3G signal so I put the receiver in the window and the transmitter in my living room. Now I get between 1 and 6mbps down throughout my entire house. There is not even a way to connect this thing to a home internet router. I don't even have home internet.
I'd be curious to know where you heard this.
Oh and the G2x does not work on AT&T 3G bands. I have been in several states with no T-Mobile coverage and have used AT&T instead, but only on Edge.

I didn't intend to sound overtly defensive, I just don't like when people start using the "scam" word when this couldn't be further from a scam. This device kicks ass and tmo wants to give it out for free in exchange for people's business. This device is normally $500 so this program is great. Hopefully they will also offer the equipment at full retail price for those uncomfortable signing or extending a contract.

Lots of countries are messed up. We just finally got all the carriers providing 3G here in Thailand. Two of them are providing 3G on 850Mhz (DTAC and TrueMove), one is on 900Mhz and the other is on 2100Mhz. A big grab bag. An AT&T phone will get 3G on two of them. Some TMO phones get 3G on the other one. But all phones get it on the 2100 carrier. I am using my G2X on 2100Mhz here (TOT3G) and my Nexus One on 900Mhz (AIS). So the USA isn't the only country with non-unified 3G bands.

Unlocked ATRIX 2, currently on T-Mobile. Can I get 4g?

Im pretty sure you're gonna be stuck with Edge as in the bands are different for 3G and Hspa
I have a friend that has an Atrix 4g unlocked on T-Mobile, and he has claimed to have gotten a 4g signal in one fringe area. He said that it was very spotty at best but it worked. I suspect it was some kind or roam signal he caught, or he was delusional. But Edge is definitely the best you will get since the frequencies are different. There is no fix for that, it is a hardware thing.

Atrix 2 Unlocked No Signal
I have successfully removed the network lock on an Atrix 2 but gets absolutely no signal/emergency calls only with a T-Mobile sim. When I search for Network providers only AT&T shows. I was wondering if the radio was locked for some reason. Anyone else had this problem?

I still have the hope that at some point after the BL gets unlocked we might get a hacked radio kernel of sorts that will allow use of t mobile bands..... The global 2 did something like this to allow use of t mobile...... One can hope.....

You can get 4G on T-Mobile, but only in certain areas as of right now. Pretty soon though, after T-Mobile starts utilizing the frequencies gained from the deal going through, you should start seeing more 4G in more places. But we have to wait and see if it actually happens.

I live in Vietnam, and I have a problem with Vinaphone network, added APN, but can only use HSPA (4G icon).
If I switch to GPRS (E icon), it says connected, but I cannot ping pass.
Other network (Viettel) is normal.
Even if the bootloader gets unlocked I still believe it would be a hardware issue not an issue of the radio software. They use the same 2g frequency so you can still get edge, but when it comes to 3g they operate on different frequencies. Some phones are made with the hardware for both frequencies though. My Samsung Vibrant (Tmobile phone) actually had the hardware to be used on AT&T 3g! The radio software was an issue unfortunately and it didn't switch well between 2g and 3g, tried all sorts of radio software but had no luck back then.
From what people have experienced by taking this phone to AT&T though, its looking like the Atrix 2 doesn't have the right hardware for the Tmobile 3g frequency.
I'm not one to say something is impossible though. Who knows.. maybe through the failed merger of AT&T and TMobile, TMobile was somehow able to gain access to some of AT&T's 3g towers (doubtful), since they did gain coverage through the breakup agreement after the merger failed.

In certain markets, they will get part of the frequency that AT&T uses for 4G. I forgot what bands exactly, but if you do a Google search, you should get more info.

I'm using unlocked Atrix 2 on T-Mobile. And I did get 4G signal when I was in downtown Bellevue, WA. I didn't believe so I ran few speedtests, best I got on Download was 1501kbps, and 1416kbps Upload, and it wasn't roaming. So yes, it works in few places right now.

[Q] Samsung Infuse 4G At&t HSPA+ data working on T-mobile network.

Hey,
I was recently using my phone that i got a couple days ago ( Bought it unlocked at my local Electronics store ) and i popped in my T-mobile sim card and after 1 day I looked at my status bar, I had H+ on the top right corner. I tested it out on my browser ( I was at a park while this happened ) and the data worked fast like on a T-mobile 4g phone. But it later went away after a couple minutes. I was trying to take a picture with my other phone to prove that it wasnt photoshopped or anything but i was too late. Can someone help me on this situation? Is there a way i can keep it at HSPA+? Please don't take me as a cellular noob i repair phones and setup for plenty of people.
Thanks.
That could be some bizarre glitch.
The AT&T Samsung Infuse should not have the hardware to support T Mobile HSPA+

Yeah, thats what i was curious about. I was happy for the moment being, but when it went away i just had to go with it since its supposed to be at edge speeds.

I'm actually really weirded out by the fact that it actually worked at all for a period of time, and that you got speeds at that speed. So the question is, what exactly happened?
One may never know

Basically, I was in a neighborhood next to the park ( thats the way i get there ) and i was looking at my phone and saw my H+ sign up there so I got pretty excited and tested it out and it was indeed HSPA+. I will go back to the same neighborhood and check again. Also it happened while i was at the gym a couple hours before. Weird stuff.
Probably a bug, sometimes mine thinks it doesnt have a data connection when it actually does, or displays E (for edge) when its actually on 3g
If you catch it happening again do a speedtest - I doubt it will be 4G speeds
I would assume you were seeing an area where T-Mobile has 'refarmed' their HSPA+ network onto the 1900MHz band, which according to Samsung is possible with the hardware.:good:
Refarming makes a lot of sense. And I will definitely speed test it for sure.
