At the moment Odin is our only tool for flashing, we are working to get back the old recovery to use update.zip to flash directly from phone, but this could take some time till its working. But then we probably can also use it to flash directly to bml partition using redbend.so

I have been reading all kinds of stuff on flashing ROMS. I don't know if it is really that complicated, as it seems. I have looked at the wikkis at XDA and Cyanogen...there are lots of similarities, but trying to figure out exactly what you need to flash a ROM seems to be anything but straight forward. There also seems to be no absolute SINGLE meaning for some terms.
Do you need to install SDK, or is it already part of something, like Titanium, ClockworkMod or Busybox?
Every time I look at another source of information, I end up thinking that there is an almost infinite number of ways to skin the ROM flashing cat.
I am just looking for a clear linear path to follow.
Rooted sgh-i727R
You have to Root the phone first, if you don't do that then you can't do anything to the phone. Then flash a Clockwork Recovery, and install the ROM.
What phone are you using though?

It's a Rooted Samsung GS ll Sgh-727R. I thought it was a bit more complicated than that?? Don't you need to copy the rom to your p.c. 1st?
In one of the wikkis they were also talking about unmounting the SD card etc. Every time I read one" Guide",it conflicts with the next..
Is flashing the ROM as straight forward as the instructions in this link?
And, just to be sure. In the instructions, when they say" SD CARD", do they mean; Download the CM7 & Google apps to the INTERNAL SD, or the Removable EXTERNAL SD CARD?
sdcard usually means the internal sdcard, i.e. /mnt/sdcard
the instructions differ from device to device, because some just can't be flashed another way.
it usually boils down to two methods:
- put the rom on the sdcard, and use a recovery manage like CWM (clock work mod) to flash the rom from the device itself
OR
- install the correct usb drivers on your computer and use a tool like heimdall/odin to flash the rom from your computer
i did not see any link

Thanks! Would I be correct in thinking, that it's easier to just flash the ROM from the phone?
Sorry, here are a couple of the links that I was looking at

http://www.theandroidsoul.com/cyanogenmod-7-cm7-for-the-att-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-sgh-i727/
The HUGE difference between the two instructions, is what was kind of confusing.
One other question... if your phone is rooted, but you still have the stock ROM, will you still be able to update to ICS via OTA once it becomes available?
THANKS!
What counts as easy depends on what you find easy ;-).
I prefer flashing through recovery mode.
Sometimes it is not possible to flash it through recovery and you need odin/heimdall for certain steps (i.e. when your recovery does not allow flashing of unsigned files and you need to flash a custom recovery like CWM).
It is also easier to brick your device by ticking the wrong box in odin/heimdall ;-).
I have never updated a device via OTA, i think you can still receive the OTA update, but will most likely have to root your device again.

HI , i am using galaxy mini ICS CM9 Beta3, can i use odin instant install back my gingerbread 2.3.6 ? .....my beta3 rom is not working the USB storage, but i test boot my phone to downloading mode and open ODIN,it is connect to my phone. i am confused, someone can help me
if you want to go back to your previous rom, you should have backed it up using clockworkmod.
if you didn't, I suggest you install it (if you have root, you can install the rom manager application to do that for you)
Regarding Odin, you can use it to restore to your previous version, if you have the rom on your computer. As usual, you will loose all your user data.
In Galaxy Mini, to use that program is to have a hard brick, so don't install that. Rom manager is not compatible with our device.
I think if you make a nandroid and flash the rom through CWM after the wipes, you won't have any problem, but it will be better if someone gives more opinions, just in case.

boot loop on galaI've been trying to load custom ROxy mini (not lack of /data format)
I actually have ROM Manager on my Mini, though I haven't flashed CWM through it, granted (and I won't after your advice, thanks).
I installed my clockworkmod on my phone , how to back my previous ROM ? How should i do??
To be clear, you CANNOT go back to your existing rom through clockworkmod if you didn't back it up first.
Since you didn't, your only chance now is to flash the original firmware. If you don't have the firmware file on your computer, you're going to have to obtain it somehow. I recommend your mobile operator, and google if that fails.

Hi
I have read a heap about roms unlocking boot loaders etc.
I have installed Clockwork Recovery and flashed Mini CM7 Pro.
I really want to flash 7-2.2.0 and nAa Kernel but one thread says i need to be on the SE 2.1 rom to do this and another doesn't mention it. For some reason my PC wont allow me to access the recovery mode via PC Companion to install the stock Rom.
So can i just follow the instructions from my current setup using Clockwork Recovery?
Thanks
Help Please
Have i done something wrong or is this just a really tough question?
So i've bought this unpopular tablet + phone device that has an android version 4.2.2 installed, Jelly bean. Brand name is: Neo. Full name would be: Neo Omnipad 3g. I've rooted it successfully but i kind of wanna have a backup of my system before i do some risky stuffs. I downloaded the Nandroid backup app in my phone and created a backup that is placed on my sd card now but the PROBLEM IS: I don't have a CWM recovery tool. I've tried to use ROM manager but it wont recognize my device as well which means i cant install any CWM Recovery tool that would support my device as well as backups, I also did tried the Quick boot and tried to put my device into Recovery mode but it stucked on the Android with an open body having Exclamation on it. Could somebody help me with this? Are there any other ways that could support my device in terms of having a backup of my current and original ROM or OS in this android? Thanks much!

If you can figure out how to unlock your phones' bootloader, you might be able use "Odin" to flash+backup your ROM and data.
I have flashed various version 5 stock firmware's and the latest 6.0 using nexus tool kit, as well as specifically flashing only stock recovery using the tool kit and I cannot load into the stock recovery. I've spent hours looking for information on manually flashing the stock recovery without the tool kit but have found the instructions very vauge. Any information on flashing manually only the recovery would be very helpful or information on why I may be having this issue.
I know every time i flash a rom it only shows about half of my internal storage. I have a 32gb version. So I end up having to go into a recovery "temp flashed" using the tool kit in order to clear some information and then i get my 32gb's back.
I"m wondering if the space being auto allocated or partitioned is interfering with the flash of the recovery...?
thanks guys

All u need to do is have a computer with ADB installed, preferably a LinuxOS, as I don't use Windows so the commands will be a little different, but with Linux it goes like this, download recovery for ur device and rename it recovery.img, keep it in a folder that u can access, TWRP works best, then boot to bootloader, connect USB to pc, open a terminal window and type these commands:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot recovery
That should do it, u can do it with Wugz toolkit too, just use the force flash feature in the advanced menu if u don't have Linux or don't feel comfortable manually flashing, if u need further help lmk
