LG Optimus M Questions/help - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Before I start I want to mention that I searched the forums as best possible to figure this out but I've had no luck.
My brother-in-law just got an Optimus M, from metropcs, last night. When he synced his contacts to facebook, he lost the ability to edit them and all the phone numbers were lost. Apparently, the facebook data overwrote the existing contact info. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? As it stands, he can't make calls from the contact list and he can't edit/add/delete contacts without going through facebook.
Another problem he's noticed is that he got an error when he first connected the phone to his laptop via usb. After that error, now his computer doesn't even detect the phone. Is there a way to fix that?
A final question I have, what is the best way to root this phone? I'm used to working with the Evo, which has it's own forum. It's a little trickier to find relevant info for this phone. My search-fu will have to get much stronger, I think.
Thanks all!

Well I am new here, and I also want help to root this phone, I was trying with that Z4root program and a few other things with no success.
but for the USB problem here is what I Did:
firstly go here:
go to lg dot com (sorry i cannot post links yet apparently lolz)
download that program LG mobile support tool
2. Install it, and while the phone is DISCONNECTED open the program.
3. Select English.
4. Next, on the main window choose to install the USB driver, and choose LGm690 as the model number.
5. Wait while the app downloads and installs 4 or 5 separate drivers.
6. On your phone, enable USB debugging and plug it in.

[Q] Ready to toss Captivate out the window HEEEEEEELPPPPP Please!!!!!

So I'm ready to return this phone and switch to Verizon and a Droid X
Problem 1: No matter what I try I cannot get this phone to connect to my laptop or PC I have probably spent almost 6-10 Hours trying to do this.
Problem 2: This is no where near the concern of problem one but it's annoying as hell, following many of the users advice in order to sync my contacts I used a gmail account and it synced 750 of my "contacts" while most of those 750 are worthless to me I have about 210 or so I actually need. So in order to fix this I created a new gmail account and only copied the contacts I needed as a .csv and synced now I can't get rid of the contacts from the original sync without restoring the phone or so it says.
Setup 1: Laptop Dell Lattitude D630 with Windows XP 32bit SP3 and .net frame work 4. I have tried almost everything. Tried using Kies, Updating Kies, Reinstalling Kies, Reinstalling Drivers, Tried ever driver out there, backdating and redoing it all over again etc. tried different USB Cables the closest I ever got was where it would say Connecting ( displayed in KIES ) and would eventually time out.
Setup 2: Desktop Windows XP SP3 32 Bit .net frame work 4 basically ran down the same thing on the desktop as well except for trying the original USB cable going to try that tomorrow
With both setups I can't get either to connect or even mount the drive in debug mode so I can;t even root this piece of garbage.
IS it me? Am I doing something wrong? If so call me an idiot and tell me how to fix it. I'm open to try anything at this point as this is more frustrating then using that piece of garbage Tilt 2 I had before this.
Please oh geniuses of XDA HALP!
If you have any questions please ask or if you think I left something Important out as well
This may or may not help you; however I had to get the official drivers from Samsung and not the ones that people were using - the Galaxy S drivers caused more problems for me. Uninstall, reinstall the proper drivers, reboot. Then reconnect, expand the drivers installation "balloon" and make sure the four drivers necessary install correctly. I kept having a problem with the USB Mass Storage Driver - but the second time got it.
On the phone, switching from Samsung Kies to USB Mass Storage then enabling USB Debugging and connecting directly to my machine(s) solved most of my probs. I'm using the original USB cable; but to be honest not too sure that would make a difference - just don't go too cheap - I'm also using the Nokia N810 microUSB cable without issues.
Not 100% sure that will help you, but I also had some troubles initially. Don't fret. And good luck.
I just went through exactly the same ordeal you describe with a Win XP machine.
I eventually got it to work, here's what I did:
1. I Downloaded and installed in the following order:
A. Windows Installer 4.5 ... reboot
B. .NET Compact Framework 3.5 redistributable ... reboot
C. .NET Framework 4.0 redistibutable ... reboot
D. Windows XP sp3 ... reboot
After that I downloaded the drivers from the Samsung site, installed them and prepped my phone by putting it in mass storage mode, and turning debugging on.
After another reboot, I connected my phone, waited and prayed ... and it worked. It was a rather long wait as I watched it install the drivers ... be patient.
I think the prayer is what eventually worked ...

You're better off with an iPhone iOS4. Getting the Droid X is just as complicated, it's just how a Android is. You got to learn to use it before it gets powerful.
On a side note, if you do what the above posters are telling you to do, then I hope you love your Captivate as much as I love mine.
Best damn phone I have ever had. Have not had one real problem with it.
But please, read through the android development stickies, there are so many tutorials you just need to follow.
Download the Drivers you need, 32 or 64 bit what ever you need.

I don't use Apple products, but thanks.
It's not that the Software or procedures are beyond my scope of intellect. It seems that every stickied thread I have read on here has 11 different ways of doing the same thing, and not one process works the same for everyone.
Like I said I'm not opposed to trying anything at this point or starting from scratch I just figured it would be a little bit less confusing.
I guess I assumed it would be
DL Software > Install Drivers and Software > plug in phone and magic it works haha.
So far I love the phone besides the fact that it had an SMS error the other day and Deleted all of my texts, the audio jack has become flakey, and the gmail app has consistent errors. OH and I'm missing text messages from people

Thanks wanted to be sure, I had tried those on the laptop, I will try them tomorrow along with the other suggestions. Wish I had an office job like I used to then I would screw with it at work.
To fix the contacts, turn off the contact syncing, dowload Contact Remover from Market, run Contact Remover and select all contacts then delete. Now you can turn contact sync back on and you should be all set.

you could try simpler first - try to connect without Kies;
1. Phone ->settings->applications->usb settings -> ask on connection
2. Install drivers - I installed the AT&T captivate drivers, then the Samsung Drivers
3. Connect phone - if the screen is unlocked, you should see an option for which USB setting you want
4. Pick Mass storage
5. You should see one or two new drive letters on your machine (internal and SD card if you have one)
6. Pull down notification bar on phone, click USB, use for files, Mount drive
This will validate that you have the drivers installed without doing everything else that is involved with .Net stuff
You really only need the Captivate AT&T drivers for this part to work.
I have 2 XP machines and I have full functionality without installing Kies.
I probably tried everything as well..... if not more, but kept trying on my Win 7 64bit.
Don't know of which step finally worked but in using the updated version of Kies (Kies_1.5.1.10074_2_6), Samsung cable (non-motherboard port?), Samsung official 64bit USB drivers, unmounting External SD, setting Captivate to "ask preference for USB", and a final deep breath.
I ended up copying the Samsung USB driver folder to an easy to find location (desktop) and while in Kies(probably not necess.) I opened Windows device manager and asked each device error message to search that folder for correct driver one by one. It finally worked. I used Kies for Outlook Contacts, selected and used Media Center for music(had to remount SD before it would be recognized). Haven't used, but tried mass storage, modem(tether) and they were correctly recognized. Good luck!
What finally did it for me, after getting all the drivers to install with the phone in debug mode, was to set it to always ask on connection. It refused to install the mtp driver if I just set it to mass storage and left it there. I have no idea why, as mass storage is what I click when it connects, but it seems happier this way.

I had problems with kies and launcher pro. Had to switch back to original launcher for kies to work. Haven't tried in awhile.with both programs getting updates, it may be fixed now. My .02.

I had the same problem. .. actually I still have the same problem, however, there are ways to root and enable sideloading without ever hooking up to the computer. Try that out. If you can't find out how to do it, let me know and I'll do a write up.

Thanks Will do this today.
everything else I will try tonight and let you guys know how it goes I will do it on both my laptop and on my PC at the same time.
Thanks so much for all the suggestions guys
I had the same problem with launcher pro, no matter how I tried to connect, unless I was in debug. Switching to the always prompt or whatever took care of that for me.

i knw this isnt really helpful but dont throw it out the window send it to me hehehe
I just tried the older cable that was party to all the unsuccessful Kies attempts and got the same error. Tried Samsung cable.....no issues. Odd because that same cable worked fine for EVO 4G and a Motorola device and Moto Phone Tools.
Could be fluke?
Well first off I want to thank everyone for the words of encouragement. I was able to finally get the phone rooted. not 110% sure how I did it but it's now done.
My second issue is now getting Kies to work, all it does is sit there and say connecting device
Thanks again everyone

[Q] Application Deployment not working after interopunlock

Having a crazy day. Got the new ChevronWP7 unlock last night. Did the internet sharing interop combo. Now get error trying to reload xap files. Trying to put on accentchanger file.
Error - failed to connect to the device. Ensure that the device is connected..
The xap app is not supported
You have to deploy supported xap only
Ex:
Screen cupturer
Nokia maps
Battery status
Tango, but it is now in marketplace
Some other apps like Native keyboard are not working.
Good luck.
Sent from my 7 Mozart
@verynuclear: Not sure what you think you're trying to say, but it's totally possible to use high-privilege apps like Advanced Config (which does custom accent colors, among other things). You just need Interop Unlock, which is easy on LG, possible (via an app) on Samsung, and difficult but not impossible on HTC (I have it on my HD7).
The problem is that after using the Interop-unlock app on his or her Samsung phone, the OP seems to be having trouble with the XAP deployment tools. @jgibo, I suggest you read and then post in the relevant threads for those apps, rather than starting a new thread.
The main reason for asking question is if the deployment tool stopped working for anyone else. After I got Chevron on there I was able to install screen capture, accent changer. Screen capture worked. So I removed accent changer and followed instructions for interop unlock install. Then saw the thread for internet sharing and interop in one. Installed that to phone. Got internet sharing Then tried a few different xap files and couldn't install any. So did that xap mess something up? Guess I will look elsewhere for answers.
This is all they have on MSDN site.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This can be caused by several reasons, including if the device is off. If the device is already connected, sometimes disconnecting and then reconnecting the device may fix the problem. Rebooting the device may also fix this problem
You do have internet sharing OFF right? You can not deploy XAP's with ICS on. I don't mean to be rude but it really does pay to read the whole post when someone gives instructions on how to do something before saying it messed up your whatever.
voluptuary said:
As long as your device is unlocked in some way (Developer/Chevron/Other) you can get internet sharing on your Samsung phone.
1.) First install the WP Dev Tools and unlock your Samsung phone.
2.) Use the Application Deployment tool to send THIS to your phone. You do not need to run it and you can delete it after it has been deployed.
3.) Install the Diagnosis app by typing ##634#
4.) After the Diagnosis app starts type *#9908# and select 'System Tweaks' press 'Save' then 'Close' and RESTART your phone.
5.) Your phone now has internet sharing and as a bonus is interop unlocked!
PS: You need to have a recent firmware on your phone or your diagnosis app and drivers will not be new enough to work.
EDIT: I built the file depoyer app using the tools provided by Heathcliff74 so many thanks to him! Also ADC is built in as well so no need to worry about that and I also upped the max number of connections from 3 to 5 devices.
NOTE: If you have internet sharing turned on (active hotspot) you will not be able to deploy XAP's untill it is turned off. Also, as with any xap, you need to have your screen unlocked to deploy.

Of course if you have ICS off then I'm sorry for this little rant and all I can suggest is restarting your phone and PC and trying again.
ICS is and was off. Found other posts with same message. Currently reinstalling dev tools. I do IT support for a living and hate havinng to do troubleshooting on my own stuff From past experience with computers it is either a coincidence or cause when a new problem occurs. Hence the questions asked. I do remember seeing an odd usb error in system try when I was doing step 4. Did a troubleshoot on my Focus connection but that didn't help. Also tried all usb connections. If the reinstall doesn't work will have to get my htpc out and try on it.
Reinstall didn't work. Since it stopped after running system tweaks I am trying again. Wish the instructions had a note on how long after hitting the save button before it was done. Has the Loading GPRS Profile for System Tweaks on screen. I think I may have hit the close button yesterday while is was still showing Loading. Right now I am not touching phone till I see it go away. Unless you are supposed to hit close right after hitting save.
The settings are applied almost instantly, as soon as it says loaded after you hit save then you can hit close and restart. Another user stated they had to turn ICS on then off again before he could deploy XAPs. Another question, you haven't turned on wired tethering have you? I ask because if you don't set your phone back to Zune sync you also will get the error you are getting.
EDIT: Main question, does Zune see your phone when you plug it in at all? Can you sync media? Cause if you can't you have another issue that is beyond anything my XAP could have done.
That kind of worked. Turned on ICS then back off. Got Advanced Config to install. Now get UnauthorizedAcessException. Click ok and app closes. Go from one issue to another.

Hello New Here And Have A Question

I have the HTC Evo 3D. I'm trying to raise the volume for my phone from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147436
I have windows XP and I can not seem to figure out how to get the HTC Modem to show up in the modems section. I also can't figure out how to get QPST to find my phone. For some reason it opens offline. I have my msl code and everything needed. Please help I have been searching every where and everything. If I missed a thread please direct me to that thread please and I am sorry to bother you.
Hi there itsdope.
In order to get your PC to recognize the device, you will need to install the latest version HTC sync for the EVO 3D. This can be found at htc[dot]com[forwardslash]support. Choose your phone from the dropdown, go to downloads, and download the 1.30.2012 release for HTC SYNC. Then you will be able to use QPST as the correct drivers will be installed. Make sure you put your phone in diagnostic mode. Pull up the dial pad and type in ##DIAG# (##2313#). This is when you start QPST service programming.
Let me know if you have any more trouble

I had that phone for a little while before I traded it in and I was using an app to raise the volume, I think it's called Amp or something, did you try that or did you ever figure out your problem?
reply
I have tried using apps from the market place to increase the volume but none have a effect worth it. They don't really amplify the volume, to the reply about QPST I have installed the newest HTC Sync. I can find the com. But im QPST and the phone in diag mode before opening QPST it doesn't pick the phone up nor does it let me pick the option of turning it on. It gives me the drop down box and it has a lot of options I don't know where to find the com port through all the options to do the necessary procedures.

[Q] help with using adb?

Hello, sorry to but this here in the Q/A area. I have been searching for answers for a few weeks now dealing with using adb on my htc inspire. I have found files for doing it and all but nothing saying it will work with my htc inspire. I down loaded the latest htc sync from htc web site, plug my phone in and it dose not detect my phone. I have read that I need drivers for my phone on computer but, nothing I have tried works. Could some one either point me to the files that will work with my inspire, sorry to ask to be spoon feed this and all but nothing I try has worked. thanks a bunch.

The drivers should come with installing HTC Sync. Are you merely downloading it or also installing it?
umm installing it i guess, i downloaded the sync installer and it installed sync. i just uninstalled every thing and going to try it again.
I had the the same problem have to you tried connecting to another pc or say a car stereo for disk drive?

k, cool here it is. I plug my phone into my laptop, the meassage pop up down at the bottom right corner saying installing drivers. then it said needed to restart computer to finish with the install. I did that, and plug phone back in and the android drivers on laptop fail to start. I can give you the exact error i get when I go into device manager, and click on the android driver, but i cant right now I am at work. i have tried this with severial custom roms, even custom roms that are stock. Right now though i am running my original rom that came with phone, wich its not updated. Its the rom my phone came with what two years ago. I was able to connect phone to computer back then thought i would try that but no joy.
my fire wall is turned off and defender is turned off, i have turned off the setting asking me if i want to run a progrme or not, i forget what it was called and also i have not tried that yet. found it under security settings disabled it and turned off computer was going to try it tonight when i get home.
xZeroMancerx, you have any info on this that can help bud?
just thought I would add some more info. tonight I tried to install HTC sync again to see if I could get it to work. would not install windows something 11 prog also when it asked me to restart computer I waited for a min and it gave me the blue screen of death.
**
ok well i finally got it to work. turns out their was a major issue with my computer. was stuck on down loading sp1 from Microsoft even. I had to down load some files to fix vista, and re-download sp1 manually and install it. but sync is now working like a charm.

[Q] Cannot connect to PC after de-bloat?

I recently went through the process of de-bloating this phone; following the helpful guides here on the AT&T G3 General forum.
However, I am finding that I cannot connect via USB to my notebook. I am going to try this on my PC @ home this pm and see if this just is not a driver issue on this end.
I restored the LG PC Suite & Suite Service to system (as well as the settings) and tried the PC suite connection app on my notebook. No dice there either...I do not even see the phone asking me how I want to connect to the laptop before I began all this de-bloat.
Is there an APK, etc. I am missing on the phone that I need to bring back to make the PC suite work again, much less connect with my notebook?
I do have developer settings / usb debugging enabled as well as (re-) installed the LG driver package. Thank you for reading / assisting in advance.

perhaps a list of the things you did would help us decipher what might be wrong. Everyone's idea of 'debloating' is different so I'm sure you've done something different then I have.

Thanks for the reply. I removed pretty much everything on the lists provided in the AT&T G3 forums and now Windows 8 refers to my device under "Printers & Devices" as a "USB Charge Only Interface". I am on my home PC now where I can verify a few days ago I could connect to the device.
To be more specific, I cannot switch the G3 into MTP mode. Does anyone know if there is a specific apk (libs, etc) to re-enable this feature?

This is the reason I usually just freeze apps in titanium backup instead of uninstalling bloat altogether. I've had this kind of issue with other devices in the past so I always err on the side of caution. Like the other member said if you can list what all you removed so we can narrow down which app is causing your issue.
I removed all of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2822501

...and carrier IQ as well. I restored the lg sync files (2) already and no change. Curious what apk allows the phone to be recognized as more than a charging device.

I've removed carrier IQ as well. Is there anything more than what's in the list of my frozen apps that you've removed?
Thank you for taking the time. Yes everything from the link I provided above. That is the exact list.
I'm working from the other direction...of what is the file(s) that allow a G3 to go into MTP mode.
Stupid question, but have you checked the cable to ensure its a sync cable?
Sent from my LG-D850 using XDA Free mobile app
Its a great question, ty for replying. I sure have, using the stock LG supplied USB 2.0 cable

This is going to be kind of obvious but have you gone into devices on your pc and removed the LG drivers? If you remove them and then plug it in it should auto detect and reinstall the drivers. If it doesn't then at least we know its not a driver issue and it is in fact something on your device. I know it'd be a huge coincidence to both the notebook and desktop to have the same problem but the drivers could have somehow been corrupted.

Have you done what silentisdeath did in his second response?

Thanks for the reply. I removed pretty much everything on the lists provided in the AT&T G3 forums and now Windows 8 refers to my device under "Printers & Devices" as a "USB Charge Only Interface". I am on my home PC now where I can verify a few days ago I could connect to the device.
To be more specific, I cannot switch the G3 into MTP mode. Does anyone know if there is a specific apk (libs, etc) to re-enable this feature?

USB Charge Only Interface
this rings a bell, the first time I connected my phone to the computer it did this, I had to change the setting to MTP mode. There should be a notification on the phone that says something about changing the usb mode.
Also I don't think you get this option if the drivers aren't installed properly so that's another thing you could try

This is the reason I usually just freeze apps in titanium backup instead of uninstalling bloat altogether. I've had this kind of issue with other devices in the past so I always err on the side of caution. Like the other member said if you can list what all you removed so we can narrow down which app is causing your issue.

Agreed...I will probably flash back to stock, root without tripping qfuse this time, and do a lot of freezing instead of direct removal.

For sure. Its affecting more than that too.
I tried messing with real 4k (not 2k) wallpapers in GN launcher and it really messed with the background. Half screen black and flashing the image every 10 secs...even 1080 wallpapers starting failing.
Switched back to stock launcher and sort of fixed. Reboot finally allowed me to use GN with any 2k or less wallpaper again lol.

I have removed every single app in my list on the thread you mentioned and there is no problems with phone connecting to pc. Most likely a driver issue - try installing LG PC suite

If you scroll up, I wrote that it was purely an issue of which launcher I was using.
