so you flashed a gingerbread only kernel and wonder why it broke?
I just wanted to know if there was anyway just to get my phone back to normal
build date of your phone please? You may be in for a jig..........
This is why we read before we flash our phones............
How can I find out the built date?

pull the battery out of the phone.
At the end of the serial number you will see a number xx.xx that is the build date.
If we get it back up and running......you have to promise you are not gonna mess with it without reading on this site for at least 2 days......and learn everything you need to know....Bricks are not fun.....especially when you don;t know what to do
lol! yeah i leaned my lesson for good!
WHen I pulled out the batter and on the back of the phone I have: R5YZ89664V ....with a long space and a ZK at the end and off to the side i see a 1008 REV 0.4
1008 has the 3 button combo disabled by default........You may be learning a harder lesson than you thought....
If this doesn't work you are going to be buying a jig.......
1.) open odin (I'm assuming you have odin)
2.) pull the battery from your phone
3.) hold vol + and vol - (through steps 4 and 5)
4.) plug in the usb cable
5.) put the battery in the phone.
This should trigger the phone into download mode. and Odin should recognize it.
I will give that a shot and if it doesnt work then I need to get a jig?

awesome thanks!
I tried using odin to go back to jf6 and its all good until it says Do not turn off target. then it stays there and when i try to reboot my phone is bricked, any advice. also please dont close this topic, i cant post in the development forums and all i want is some help. so how do i get out of a brick and odin i897ucjf6-final-ocd isnt working?
Is it hard or soft bricked? Soft bricked phones are not difficult, in fact, I'm working on a one-click unbrick for soft bricked phones right now.
If it's hard-bricked, black screen, acts like it's off, then you've got no choice other then JTAG or repair center.

Yes, I've seen this too and it scared me a little the first time. It's most likely just a soft-brick. I take it you see some icon about Phone != Computer? I had this problem using Odin One-Click for JF6 when I didn't follow the instructions exactly because I thought some steps were unnecessary. Try this:
1. Power off unit and remove all connections.
2. Remove battery, sim card and SD card.
3. Connect USB cable to computer.
4. Start Odin One-Click
5. Re-insert battery only.
6. Hold down Vol up+down.
7. Connect USB cable to Captivate while still holding volume buttons.
8. Start the Odin download.
And you should now be back it download mode and loading up JF6. Once it reboots, you should have a Stock AT&T Captivate.
If other versions of odin3 or oneclicks don't work try A10 TOOLBOX/ CAptivate toolbox. Used it over 50 times with all different. Revision versions. Works like a charm. alot of Galaxy s / varients are cursed with this Odin/computer dreadful recognize problem. Also keep in mind Odin may choose to only work for one particular USB port. have you restarted your computer? I have to do that occasionally in order to get odin to start working again.
Hey community.
Long time lurker, first time poster.
Anyhow, my brother bricked his infuse last night. Apparently he tried to flash an incompatible cwm fw (Nexus S) and rebooted it, and now its stuck at the samsung logo. Secondly, i tried to push it into download mode and it continues to loop. I tried to connect it to Odin and it does not recongize the phone, however it freezes at a picture of a wheel (similar to windows hourglass) and doesnt move from there.
i'm assuming its perm bricked at this point, unless you have suggestions.
Others have mentioned "jig" and "unbrickable mod" although I could not find any details further than the terms.
Any help would be appreciated.
Just checking, have you tried this?:
Remove the battery, and disconnect USB.
Hold, and continue to hold both volume keys.
Continue to hold vol. keys, connect USB.
Insert battery and continue to hold vol. keys for awhile.
That should put you in download mode.

Lol next time try heimdale. It for me anyways works first try all the time. I only use Odin when i have to, other then that i always use heimdale. Make sure when you use heimdale plug your phone into another port. Ive figured out that a usb port only recognizes the phone a certain way, as heimdale uses different drivers that you install. On my laptop i have two ports that i do not usually use (one is dedicated to a bluetooth dongle/mouse) so one is set up for odin, the other for heimdale.
Yeah heimdall is the way to go...don't even need drivers...it uses its own special drivers that it will download for you if you don't already have them
Heimdall never fails me...but Odin...well Odin is kinda iffy

This is how i used the hemidall one click to stock here is what I do, below are how i perform using qkster's method...
The USB + Volume Down + Volume Up Method: Download mode (Noticeable by an Android robot digging with a shovel) is reached by taking everything out (Battery, SIM, MicroSD). plug in the USB cable to your computer and phone then putting in battery at the same time Holding the volume buttons both up and down, (Don't press the power button at all in this method).
How to INSTALL:
1. Put your phone into Download Mode.
2. If you have not used Heimdall, you will need to set up the driver for device recognition.
3. Once your device is connected, the DEVICE STATUS should show: CONNECTED. The long FLASH bar will also turn on for flashing.
4. Click on the FLASH button. (In my opinion: I recommend that you do this in a safe environment. Do not disturb your phone will flashing this firmware. Turn off Antivirus. Do not run any other programs, upload/download/youtube/burning DVD etc)
5. Once it has completed, your phone will reboot. You will hopefully see the ATT logo and reboot into STOCK UCLB3.
6. If it did not work, you will have to put it back into DOWNLOAD mode and reflash a second time, with the FLASH BOOTLOADER box checked. This is more likely if you never had proper Gingerbread bootloaders on your phone, if you are coming from FROYO or if you never had Odin a Gingerbread leak to get your bootloaders.
download this file for your one click to stock...and using above directions...
once that is done and you want to put CWM mod on for flashing a custom ROM, same directions to get in to download mod...
download this file to use the one click to put CWM mod on your phone

samsung i997 bootloop no bootloader solution
Dear guys i'm not saying this will be everybody's case but in my shop we got two of this phones with the issue mentioned above, in the two cases the issue was caused by faulty power button, so before you format or flash your samsung i997 i'll advice to go to youtube search for a diassemble video for your phone take out the main board and with your tester verify that your power button is working properly. If not try to replace the power button. i have soved the two cases that way.
Ok, here's where I'm at...
Rooted/Kexec installed
Flashed several ROM's over the last two weeks or so with no issue.
Never did a backup and restore.
Flashed a CM10 Invisitek(?) ROM today and didn't like it.
Before I flashed it, I made a backup of my XTC install.
Tried to restore that XTC and it failed.
Tried to restore again and it said that it passed and I rebooted.
Now, when you turn the phone on, it will boot up to Samsung Custom with a lock icon then flash the Samsung Galaxy SIII screen.
Once it flashes the second screen, it will go to a blank screen and that's it.
I've tried to get the phone into Download mode by pressing both volume keys, home and power at the same time and it boots as described above.
Any nudges in the right direction? :fingers-crossed:

If you have a custom rom still on your sd card, try booting into recovery volume up+home+power and wipe data/ factory reset and then install zip from sdcard.choose your rom and flash.. that should be able to get you to boot up again. I had to do this when my phone would boot up and go blank after the sgs3 logo screen.
Do those two ROMs use different kernels? Because if that's the case, there's your problem. To my knowledge, CWM doesn't backup kernels, so restoring a nandroid wouldn't restore the kernel needed for that particular ROM to function. At least, that's how it was for my old Xperia Play. You needed to flash the new kernel before the ROM to ensure it would boot. With kexec, that's a little different.
But, I could be totally off base. Just throwing my limited knowledge out there for someone to maybe expound upon.
sorry you thru me off in your post above i thought you saying that you pressing all four my mistake but you can go here http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels= and for the channel use either #verizons3 or #verizons3-dev, they can also help you but of course stay on this thread to.

It makes sense for some phones, but it doesn't make sense that you're unable to get into download mode. Regardless of the incorrect kernel, you should be able to get into download/recovery mode. What is your device registered as when you plug it into your machine (such as QHSUSB_DLOAD)? Are you running Windows/Mac/Linux?
If your phone turns on you can get to Odin. Your best bet is making a usb jig. It's a special usb end that has 300k ohm resistor between two pins of the usb. When plugged in and the phone turns on it puts you directly into download mode. You can Google on how to make one from a usb cable and resistors from Radio Shack or mobiletechvideos.com sells them for $8.
Once in download/Odin mode you can re flash everything to stock.

This is your best bet if nothing else is working. I bought one from China on eBay last year for my GNex. I'm glad I've always got it.
Yea, I ended up having to jig it this morning when I got to the office and had access to my other tools. THAT got it into Download mode and allowed me to flash it back to stock. Bizzare evening for sure.
Thanks for all the help!
For the record...
To get into DOWNLOAD mode you hold home, power, and volume DOWN.
Volume up is for recovery.
Hope that helps.

Look for Heimdall suite and follow the instructions in the read me to reinstall the driver. Then use a heimdall one-click restore image. That should fix it.
You should be able to enter download mode no matter how messed up your phone may be..
Remove battery and place back in.
Hold both vol+ & vol- and plug in the usb already inserted to the pc.

Any ideas where to find those reinstall driver instructions? The main heimdall post in the infuse community does not have any instructions regarding re downloading drivers I believe. And no there is no download mode. I don't know how that is possible but it is. Download mode is not working on my phone.
I would also like to know the outcome of this, my phone also lost download mode. I'm not sure what happened, I was on the web and it just shut itself off and decided to bootloop itself.
I am almost 100% sure you can't lose download mode.

My friend is unable to get his phone into download mode. His phone loops constantly from the Samsung screen to the CM screen and then back to the Samsung screen.
Pulling the battery and holding down the volume buttons does nothing. Connecting it via USB just brings up the battery screen, but that loops as well (shows the 'thinking' icon then the battery screen). Odin does not recognize it, not sure if he's tried Heimdall yet. But even if he can get that to recognize it, will it do him any good if the phone is constantly cycling power?
As others above have stated, it is not likely you have lost download mode, most likely not performing all of the correct steps. If you do the steps properly and there is no download mode you will need to buy a jig ($2.) , can be found on Amazon.
Once you can achieve download mode, follow qkster's Heimdall instructions, post 1 will get you back to stock GB, and post 2 will get root access again. If you have Kies installed, uninstall it before doing anything else as it is a source of issues.
Note that you must have the latest version of Java. Also, use the same usb port on your computer each time you run Heimdall, be sure that it is a properly operating usb port as well.
Many thanks to qkster for the guide and Entropy for the kernel.

as Pony stated. The other reason we've been seeing the constant power loop is due to a stuck power button. You may need to take it apart and clean the power button.
Look thru the q/a threads...lately, the power button thing has been pretty common

Agreed! I've borked mine something awful before (namely, being careless and trying to go back to GB from JB) and losing IMEI, no recovery, etc. and could still get DL mode. I too had issues with Heimdall, albeit different, but if you use the same usb port (pull batt, plug usb in, hold vol. up/down....then put batt. in and continue to hold until DL mode)....go to control panel/system/device manager and find USB/samsung composite device, right click and update drivers. This is if Heimdall isn't working for you, use Odin v3 and flash GTG's back to stock. It will take you back to froyo unrooted. If Heimdall is working, like others have stated....be sure to have the latest java installed.
edit: If you can use Heimdall, it will prompt you to install correct drivers once you start the program.

Even with the pwer button broken, if the screen is still intact, a new replacement screen is closer to $135+.
He may be able to sell that screen pretty quickly for $75-$100.
His screen is trashed too, so he's pretty far up the creek without a paddle.
He's trying to sell it on eBay for parts currently. We'll see how that pans out.
