Vodafone 845 / Huawei Joy LCD - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hello all,
Im new to the forum, so I must apolagise if i have posted in the wrong section. I wasnt sure as this is a hardware rather than software issue.
I have been given a Vodafone 845 / Huawei Joy, and i want to obviously play around with it and root it etc. Unfortunately, this phone has a resistive screen, and the actual LCD display underneath is damaged. I have scoured the internet, does anyone happen to know of any suppliers offering cheap generic replacements, or can I use another 2.8" screen with same res and remake off the ribbon connections?
Many thanks,
Nick

Can anyone help with this? Mother in law managed to destroy her present within a week...

New LCD for HTC touch cruise problems

i've recently changed my lcd screen of cruise. The new screen has more brightness than the old one but lesser contrast. Is really dissapointing when you look at it from a small angle. (too bright). I sent back the cruise at HTC representative in Cyprus but they said that these are the new screens they install and can't do anything else. Anyone experienced any similar problem?
Is there a hidden service menu you can adjust the brightness?
Besides the included HTC Brightness application that is by default part of your apps in HTC Home, you can change brightness in Settings>>System Tab>>Brightness
You mean th backlight? it's not a problem with the backlight. the lcd has too much brightness and little contrast.
i've uploaded 2 photos of the cruise to see the screen
It looks like a bad screen. I would try to get them to replace it again.
I have exacatly the same problem!
where did you get your screen from?
I ordered mine from a chinese company on Ebay (please see my TC dismantling instructions here for details) and got the same results:
the viewing angle and contrast is not as it was, and I compared it to a new TC. It's hard to see something from the side, botton-angle view is blanked.
One lab's technician told me the LCD's probably not original or dropout, as "it should cost 100$ and more"...
I ask the supplier about that and they insist they checked it before delivery and may be "I'd fitted it wrong" (?!)
There is no 'special' fitting there, and only one ribbon connection, so it's either working or not - nothing to do with viewing angle and contrast.
Any help on this TC issue is welcomed
It's like Orbit II screen.. Poor viewing angle..
Screen quality is mainly difference of touch cruise and orbit II.. But it's like replacement parts of TC same as orbit II unfortunately...
Sorry for my English...
LCD Replacement
Hi also.
This is clearly a miserable story. My screen broke and I also obtained a replacement screen through Hong Kong (via a UK reseller) which suffers exactly the snags you have (dodgy screen contrast and very poor viewing angle). I think it's rubbish but what's the alternative apart from an OEM high cost fix? For info I think the poor performance in these screens is a standard feature as the first screen replacement had slightly different fixing/alignment lugs and was replaced by a different unit with the correct lugs. Both units however had identical poor screen performance. Has anyone replaced a screen with performance identical to the original??
Many thanks and great forum/very helpful thread.....
I have mine replaced 3 weeks ago due to a small accident with my phone, fortunately I have a insurance on it and I let it repair by official HTC dealer.
I donot have the issues as described here... Maybe this can help you in contacting the suppliers you used..
I have owned a TC since Feb 08. Earlier this month the top half of screen would not display. Returned to HTC USA for repair. They claimed TC out of warranty for several reasons, including breaking security seal. None of reasons were accurate, but agreed to pay approx USD200 for repair as I need my phone. Unit returned with poor quality "washed out" screen described above. Sent phone back and was told they did not see any problems. I called and directed them to HTC website so they could see pictures of what the TC display should look like. It seems repair was made with the "available" replacement screens. Requested replacement phone if they cannot repair to original quality. Called my vendor, Mobile Planet for assistance but they could/would not help. After discussing with "management" a HTC cust svc rep emailed an offer late last week to replace with a generic english phone. Email stated replacement phone would be the same model, but with different part number? HTC rep out of office to answer questions/resolve until next week. Will update post with outcome.
I had to replace my screen aswell.
I ordered the part trough an ebay seller. It cost me around 45 euro's incl. s&h.
The screen works but starts up in what's best described as "save mode" = 4 color low res.
But when the device turns into standby mode and awakes again the screen shows normal res and colors and is very much the same Q as the one that was replaced.
No contrast or view issues though....
im happy to see im not the only one with this problem.
I gave back my touch cruise to HTC because i broke my LCD.
same problem, the display has a lot of brightness but not a lot of contrast, and the view angle is poor!
i called my htc vendor and he tolds me that's the new LCD from htc.
PLUS:
My htc came back with a hole, like if he fall.... im very angry.
Wow, I am totally freaked now...
I just droopeed, ehm ok I confess, I did a Hulk slam with my HTC cruise just yesterday (personal issue...love sucks) anyways, I am about to get my lcd replaced for $130 I hope I dont suffer.
I do however need one help, it seems that my HTC is still functional, I could recieve calls, although I cant be sure of anything else since my screen doesnt display anything. The casing is all cracked and partially open .
But Windows Sync still works perfectly, my only question is: Is there any way I can save my smses? Perhaps it is filed under a certain folder?
I really need my sms it contains some data that I have not saved into notes, unfortunately I have not installed anyback up programs. I have looked around the folders on the internal memory but cant find it, Is there hope for me still?
My Mobiler
Well, here is a really nice helper to LCD-less units:
Download the free My Mobiler and use it's on-desktop-screen simulator to manage your phone.
Otherwise you can go Explore the unit with ActiveSync for any data you may need.
Just to report. I got my LCD screen replaced by Pocketpctechs.com, has the wash out screen problem.

HTC screen repair issue may be a big problem since they could not replace with screen of original quality. To solve my complaint, HTC provided a replacement phone. HTC stated it was a refurbished unit, but I think it was a brand new phone. It is my guess that for some odd reason, HTC is not able to provide OEM screens.
I do appreciate that despite all the costs and time I spent to get a solution, in the end, they did solve my problem.

Identifying a HTC clone ... and fixing it.

I recently bought a HTC touch phone and i suspect it is a Chinese clone but i really dont know. They all look the same to me (the phones). After searching Xda it appears to be like the HTC Elf100 and dopod S1. Is there a definitive way to tell the exact model? The phone was purchased from a website called Deal Extreme.
I would like to know if it is possible to extract the ROM from the phone and save it onto my computer for back up.
More importantly (and the reason i am here) is that the screen is malfunctioning in that the colours are all very faded and there are black lines across the length of the screen wherever there is text or icons. There is a severe flicker when the backlight is set to anything other than full brightness. For the first three days the screen was crystal clear and the colours very vibrant. The only changes made were installing some third party softwares and applying a screen protector.
I have uploaded an image here:
http://www.ibj.co.nz/vlt/CamScreen.jpg
I am trying to isolate the problem down to software or hardware. If it is hardware i will order another screen or digitizer and replace it and if it is software i will begin to look down that path, perhaps flashing the unit with more up to date ROM.
Tell us one thing, is the serial number in the following format? -> HTxxxGxxxxx, if Yes you have have original HTC Touch, if No, you have a nice Chinese clone.
If the back of the device underneath the battery looks like attached picture, you have the clone on your hands. you will have to ship it back to DX for replacement or repair.
Regards
Just from looking at the front of your phone, yes you have a clone
Yep CLone
OK Thanks for assistance. I have a clone here. DX offered to send me a replacement screen if i can locate one on their website. I would have thought they would know if they have one in stock but apparently not.
Can anyone think of a way to find what sort of a screen i would need to replace this one? I am told that the original HTC screen will not do, perhaps different pin outs.
Replacement screen
So i guess i am just sh#t out o luck then? The retailers can't find a replacement screen. Can the ridgy didge screen be modified to fit a clone?
Don't know. Since it's a clone they can have used whatever LCD, with whatever flex connector. But one thing for sure is that you wont be able to use original HTC Touch LCD.
Best option is to ship back to DX for replacement.

Change Sensation display (LCD) by One S display (AMOLED)

Hello,
I like Sensation but screen consumption seems high (as in all phones)...
I saw that HTC One S has the same resolution and the same size screen as the Sensation, but AMOLED.
Anyone know which pinouts have each screen module?
Because they are similar phones, maybe have same screens (pinouts).
If not i whould make small changes (if pinout are same but in different order).
I hope display driver (chipset) are included in the LCD module, not in the motherboard ...
I think about buy HTC One S screen on ebay when available (now dont have) and try to change it ...
(im not sure about sub-forum of this post... y think "sensation accesories" fits better than Q&A because Q&A posts are doubts about software, not hardware... if another sub-forum are good please move to them..)
I wouldn't do it. The One S screen would recieve a current it's not supposed to.
because different voltages and currents of the tft screen i need driver/chipset in screen board.
If driver are in screen board, flex cable that connect to motherboard takes digital signal bus and may be the same in both screens.
For example: there are many laptop screens that uses different lcd panels (with different control and backlight voltages), but all of them have same connection: dvi mod (now).
why not just buy the one s if your gonna be dropping cash on a screen for one.
This is a good idea, if this works. I'll be down to actually do the mod as well.
so.. when sold htc one s?... i think now, but y doesnt find anything about this and his replacement parts...
Any moderator would move thread to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1425 (hardware hacking).
I think is more apropiate... (if think "no" dont move xD)
Just to add the complexities that danirebollo mentioned, another big issue is that the mainboard might be a totally different layout. You might have to do a custom cable. Also, the thickness/thinness of the panel might be an issue.
IMHO, it would be cheaper to sell your Sensation and purchase a One S instead of modifying & purchasing a new panel.
90% of phone screens are not compatible with each other. If you find two that do, it's a coincident rather than the norm. And if I were to go through so much trouble as to source a replacement qHD Super AMOLED screen, which I'm sure won't be cheap to being with, I'd just get a new phone.
if that is possible, count me in, ive bin looking into it ever since i switched over from the samsung vibrant, but never really made any brake throughs

Agreed, I tried to upgrade the SoC by putting my R1 engine in it last night, and would you believe it, it didn't fit. Unbelievable. I wrote HTC a very strong letter of complaint ; )
Sorry, it's that time of the day here in the UK where my silly side rears its head.
Would be a good mod if it worked but I doubt it very much for the reasons mentioned, plus, is the didgitiser bonded to the screen in this new generation of HTC phones?

Well as far as I know, the only way to change the screen on one of these is to change the entire motherboard with it, I found this out at somewhere is the desire thread because many of he desire phones had smiled screens but then Samsung couldn't produce them fast enough and switched it for slcd but people wanted amoled so they swapped it all. Maybe if we asked HTC about being able to swap the screens ( yes it sounds stupid bit what else can we do?). Although the chances are amazingly thin we could request it from them that if you send the phone with them align with the cost of the amoled screen, they should replace it or even ****ing tell us how or if it can be friggin done. Power comes through numbers.....
Yeah, if someone finish this work, I maybe have a try

lol?? why sooo sarcasm??
some phones have same lcd screen (no digitizer), it hasnt rare idea... the only problem was different tecnology (LCD->OLED) but normally the only important was control bus, i2c, (i dont think these screens need this bus), and video data...
i dont know now if it is possible until i have both pinouts.
The other problem I would think is that the touch screen driver wouldn't work with the new screen

I have spoken to my manager regarding this and unfortunately we cannot advise any customer to change there device specification or hardware as this will void the warranty of the handset. I then went on to ask if our repair centre can perform this, unfortunately we cannot request this as this then support customization of the devices which is against the device terms and conditions..
I do apologise about this however we are unable to perform this request.
This is what I got from HTC asking if:
a) if it could be done.
b) if they could do it for us if we payed.
So I'm guessing somebody will have to try it on their own first. GOOD LUCK and God's speed.

Another problem,
I upgraded manually a Nexus S i9023 (slcd, like sensation) with android 4.0.3 leaked pakage in december. This package was made for i9020 (super amoled version): Android run beautifully but when you go into recovery you can't see anything (if you use a very bright light you can barely see the text of the recovery) cause it has drivers for amoled screen.
I suppose that if the screen change is possible you could also have problems to see recovery that is made with normal sensation's screen driver, imho.

We need some experts on this but HTC won't help

If this ever works, it will end like Motorola's Cliq multi touch patch. While it might work, the screen voltage sensors won't be calibrate correctly and will end burning the screen (if you don't believe me Google it). The same could happen to the screen in general, with wrong voltage its going to break.

need a lcd, touch pro 2 fit the 7 pro?

Hi, i am in desperate need of a lcd display for a 7 pro but they are seriously hard to get hold of!
I have looked on ebay and theres only ones from HK or China and even then the sellers feedback on screens is poor!
I have phoned countless repair shops in the uk and only a couple claim to be able to get hold of the screen but then demand that they fix the phone themselves and a stupid fee and will not supply the screen to me.
one thing i have noticed it that the touch pro 2 and 7 pro screens look identical apart from the colour of the ribbon that connects them to the main cable that goes through the slide body.
there is no visual difference between the screens or connector cables other thab colour and they have the same specs also-
480 x 800 pixels, 3.6 inches and a 259 ppi pixel density
Does anyone know if they are actually interchangeable or not? i cant find a screen anywhere and my wife is not pleased with me right now as ive only just got the phone and a broke the lcd trying to remove the digitizer even though i was ultra carefull and used lots of heat, please can someone help!!!!
Thanks, Steve.
Hello! To most simply answer your question, no. The screens are very different despite looking similar. The old TP2 screen is not multitouch and WP7 requires this. Also, the old screen utilizes a stylus while the newer 7 pro screen doesn't even recognize that type of touch.
It is your phone after all, so if you would like to try this that's your choice. However its too much effort to affix the ribbon to the pcb to even make it worth it. My old TP2 has a cracked digitizer which I have a replacement for, but the ribbon is machine pressed onto the pcb and reattaching this connection would be very difficult without the type of heat/pressure used in the manufacturing of the phone.
If you decide to try it let us know the results!
I'm sorry, I just seen you said the lcd itself, I thought you were meaning the digitizer screens.
That being said, maybe the swap will work, as long as they hook up the same?

i found a seller with genuine touch pro 2 screens who is willing to take it back if it does not work for me, i will let everyone know if it works!
I can confirm, the touch pro 2 screen does NOT work in the 7 pro, it is almost identical but the conector is at most 1mm wider than the 7 pro but its enough to stop if fitting into the socket
Back to the drawing board for me i guess.

not been on for a few days, thankyou for the link its still there and in europe!
I bought another 7 pro handset as i could not wait any longer, i had been forced back to my old Touch pro (raphael) and although not a bad phone and running a custom 6.5.3 rom , it just cant cope on the web anymore as all the standards have changed and nobody is supporting windows mobile anymore.
Its a shame cos windows mobile is by far a better operating system than windows phone, updated and running on better hardware it would have rocked.
even though i bought a new handset ive always intended on fixing the other one when i get the chance and have put a bid on that screen to remove the buy it now.
Fingers crossed that it dont go up in price, my wife will kill me if spend much more on these phones lol
once its fixed its going to go in its box and live in a safe place till ive worn out this new one, dont think i wll sell it, thanks for your help, you get a thanks meter point for this :good:
Steve.
You are welcome I was a little worried you might not get to the link fast enough but thankfully you did! I seen that and figured its a steal considering the lcd is nearly that price alone, plus all the work needed to change it. Good luck I hope you win it

as long as you get the right screen, theres no reason why you cant do it yourself, just go slow, very slow, read tutorials and be very carefull of all cables and boards inside. if it its the glass digitizer that is broken and not the whole display, be very very carefull when removing it from the lcd as theres a big chance of breaking the lcd as its removed, heat to relax the glue is your friend! if the glass is shatterd, removing the glass bit by bit instead of trying to remove it all at once may proove easyer and less risky on the lcd.
Good luck, steve.

OnePlus One Display replacement

Hello dear android experts !
First of all, I am not really sure if it belongs into troubleshooting or accessories cause it is a problem for me to troubleshoot,
but it is aswell a kind of "accessorie" I am searching for. However, I think it fits in here best.
As you can see on the photos, my moronic self dropped this beautiful peace of hardware 20cm to the ground. Well, short distance - bad effect.
Now I have to search for a new screen-kit cause I got a hole in mine and my touchscreen isn't working.
Since I don't want to (and can't) pay 200€ ( 150€ repair and 50€ shipping ) I want to repair it by myself.
How difficult would you say it is to replace the screen ?
Surfing around, I found a Kit Screen + Midframe on Vifocal (sorry I am not not allowed to post a link ). It will probably cost around 100€
What do you guys think ? Is the screen quality like the original one ? Is it made from Gorilla-Glass?
Or would you suggest a different one. (Preferable easy to ship to Germany)
I heard that there are two different models for the screen. How can I check which one I need ? It would be nice if someone can reply the Link.
I will also need a tool kit. How is Smartphone Repair Kit from iFixit in the european store?
Thank you in advance,
Morishno
Ps: While I got it open, I want to add wireless charging directly to the board. Any suggestions or concerns about for example NFC ?
