Dear All,
I know this is more of a WinMo oriented forum, I still could your advice as mobile enthusiasts.
I'm in the market for a new phone. I've narrowed my selection to the Iphone 3GS or Omnia HD.
I like to do everything, so the more options the merrier.
My problems with the Iphone:
-Where I live, it's expensive as hell. I'm talking 1000$
-Apple is doing good playing catch on the hardware options, but it's still missing things i value like an fm radio and a good camera.
My problems with the Omnia HD:
-Unknown territory with the new symbian performance.
-no app store.
The TP2 is too bulky for my taste, the new xperia X2/X3 might take ages to arrive and N97.....well i just dint like it.
My last phone was the Xperia, was happy with it, tragically died in an accident. Infact, if i don't decide, i'll probably get another xperia.
Any ideas, advice, suggestions?
1000$ ????? There are fools that spend this money??? No iPhone!!!

Where I live is also very expensive to buy a device, what I do is to buy overseas so I can get good prices, said that and regarding your question,
my personal opinion is to go for HTC Hero, Diamond 2, or Toshiba tg01 if you are worried about tp2 too bulky.
I would never think on buy Iphone or Omnia...
Just my 2 pesos
Good luck on your desicion!

Well, to begin, I want to comment on the price. My friend, $1000? I'm guessing it's the unlocked retail version. If you purchase it online, you can save quite a bit of change. On the other hand, the Omnia HD is now surprisingly cheap. In fact, I have been watching it since it's release, and it has steadily went down in price (on eBay, at least) by $20 every week. When it was released, it would have cost you $720 online. You can now get it for $600 (even less if you're diligent).
But enough about price, lets get to the point. From my perspective, this is what it comes down to:
1) Screen - Omnia HD; not only is the i8910's screen bigger and it's AMOLED, but it even has a better resolution.
2) Battery Life - Roughly equal
3) Specs - Equal; Both have the Cortex A8 600Mhz with an accelerated video chip
4) Camera - Absolutely Omnia HD; the picture is of a better quality, higher res, and video recording is far superior.
5) Applications - iPhone; Do I need to explain why?
Ultimately, as my evaluation above suggests, the question really comes down to what is more important: The i8910's HD capability or the iPhone's incredibly variety of apps.
You're worried about Symbian's performance, but it performs very well (albeit the i8910 seems to stutter in some places). One thing is for sure: It performs better than Windows Mobile (sorry guys). What is my opinion regarding these two phones (which I happen to have an interest in myself)?
If you were to ask me, I would go with the Omnia HD. The price plays a large factor in it, but what really turned the table was the incredible specs. The 3.7in, capacitive AMOLED is simply impossible to ignore and the CPU is just damn nice. The camera's capability is also very impressive, albeit I do not worry much about phone cameras myself. Word of warning, however: there have been multiple complaints regarding this aspect of the Omnia. Many says it does not work as advertised and it is true to an extent (for example, the listed 24fps recording is not completely accurate).
Furthermore, while performance on Symbian shouldn't be an issue, the variety of apps really is disappointing. Windows Mobile itself seems to beat Symbian in apps. The i8910 and the 3GS has the same CPU, but honestly, the iPhone's apps makes far better use of the power. Truthfully, Symbian itself is a rather old OS and it badly needs an overhaul to compete better with new OSes. These new revisions just aren't cutting it.
Anyway, to reiterate my stance, here is the main benefits of each phone:
Omnia HD
1) Best screen
2) Great camera/HD capabilities (although not perfect)
3) Great interface
4) Better extra specs (e.g. secondary camera, FM radio, etc)
iPhone 3GS
1) Best apps/games by far
2) 3GS is available in America and makes better use of American 3G (i8910 does not have 850 frequency)
3) Better support/community (this is debatable)
Whichever above is more important to you, I suggest you get that phone.

iPhone does not need support, you download the appliations, you use it, that's it. It doesn't function for tweaking and it doesn't feature running as a background processes. So it is very unlikely for you to have trouble. Really, when the phone freezes you don't need a community for that to sticky that. All you need is to google or use yahoo answers to get that.
Also using Cydia and unlocking your device is easy. No community is needed.
Furthermore the applications are comparable to Symbian because obviously the applications only run in foreground, therefore making the applications pointless and ****ty.
You have to understand that when you install applications in iPhone you don't really change the settings, so there is almost rarely a chance for program incompatibility...once again, they run in the foreground only 1 AT A TIME. So support for this phone? It's not needed.
yup same here in my country. iphone 3G was about $1000 before the 3GS released.
and IMO if i were u, i would still get xperia. It was familiar for me, no need to worry if i got some errors, many apps had been collected, what else? as long as u're satisfied, nothing's wrong to buy it again
I got my iPhone a few weeks ago..............best phone ever! As much as I'd love to talk about all the great things, I think the name iPhone says enough Camera isn't bad it's quick and takes good pics. MMS has an easy solution email, every cell phone has an email address u can send/rec pics with. Light, very fast, good battery, perfect touch ui, safari, and iPod. If ur worried about fm radio there are plenty of free apps to stream local radio stations.

Ah, but it does. Community/support simply doesn't mean help for when you have trouble using the iPhone. Those things you mentioned (jailbreaking, Cydia, etc)? Those were things created by the iPhone community.
I suppose we may refer to them as different things, but I have always consider all things related to a particular device/software/etc to be that particular thing's community (e.g. XDA would be a part of the Windows Mobile community). Whichever we want to refer to it as, however, the iPhone undoubtedly has a very large and active group of people working to improve it, and I don't see why they shouldn't be included.
After all, look at how many people here takes into consideration 'XDA support' as a reason to purchase a particular phone or not, so I think it's a valid thing to include.
orb3000, 8525Smart, TheChampJT, ingerasu.
I thank you for the information you provided.
Yes, i have heard about how the Omnia's HD camera does not do 24fps and the sound is usually out of sync.......I need to download videos from reviews and check it out first hand.
So far I'm leaning towards the Omnia. I get addicted to Apps(iPhone) and Flashing(WinMo), perhaps the lack of them with the Omnia will be a bit of a relief. What I see is almost all of what I get.
If I find an Omnia HD around for an accepatble price, I'll get it.

it's like going to www.worldhunger.com and asking give to the needy or whopper with bacon ?
IPhone does have excellent support community. In fact even better than XDA in my opinion. The amount of tweaks and customization that iPhone geeks do would shock you guys. Check out for example www.modmyi.com. All the popular Cydia software vendors have dedicated sub forums there. People there do go very deep into tweaking.
i would rather have the IPhone 3Gs over the Omnia HD.

You can record video with a Iphone 3Gs yes but you cant still do a video call with a a 1000 USD phone and no optional memory can be inserted.
Is Steves engineers retards or something? Like then they build the macbook air.
While with a 100 USD phone I expand its memory, take better pictures and even do a videocall.
So why pay 1000 USD for Iphone?
Besides my S/E X1 I have Omnia HD. If S/E had given the X1 a bigger screen like the Omnia. Then the X1 would have been better. Cause the current isn't finger friendly like Omnia HD.
Why do people keep forgetting that application is the most important thing to look at? Camera is but just one of the many applications. There are many more that we need. Whichever could deliver the best application solutions is the winner.

not even the best, just what you need in a presentation you like using.
i know this is a Winmo forum so iphone=crap. but it really is a decent device.
the OP will not be disappointed in either phone. so his best bet is to try both.
to me atleast you really cannot make a bad choice when it comes to current smartphones. they all work quite well.
My brother-in-law thinks he wants an ipod touch. I would like to discourage his use of locked-down apple products.
Basically he wants a wi-fi only pda with excellent music player and web-browsing capabilities. Should be memory expandable via sd or similar. Not sure how much he needs the calendar/todo/contacts...
I would add the following hardware requirements: nice, reasonably priced (i.e. cheaper than ipod), with good xda-forum rom support. Used and refurbished is fine, although new would be great as well.
I was thinking about a new android tablet, but he says he wants something smaller, to fit in a pocket.
My experience with this site is with my smartphones, so I am not sure where to start looking for wi-fi only recommendations. Please be gentle with my ignorance.
Thanks!
I have an ipaq 210 that now has dedicated pmp duties. It doesn't have much support here on xda, but there is a decent community on brighthand:
http://forum.brighthand.com/hp-ipaq-210-enterprise-handheld/
Install a media player, such as nitrogen, and tell him to buy a big cf card and sd card.
well i use my player only for music.. it doesnt have wifi or any webbrowser..
but im using a cowon s9. freakin best **** i ever used to hear music, just amazing quality!! the ipod or the zune is nothing against this!!
but if he really needs a player with wifi.. he should probably go for a zune player, looks cooler and is just cooler than any other apple ****
probably u can browse through the homepage of cowon, maybe u find a good player with webbrowser.. all their players are just awsome..
www.cowon.com
the players of them doesnt need any other programm like itunes.. u just drag and drop ur files like to a extern hdd or memory stick
Well naturally if your gonna pay those prices why not just get a nice WM or Android phone. Other then that check out Zunes, and Archos makes some ipody things.
But for what your looking for! I would get a Dell 51v PDA. You can get em for 40-50 on ebay now and they rock. Check up on the stats on this badboy. I used to carry one before smartphones were really good. Big touch screen, graphics accelerator, runs on WM so you have TCMP, Core, Mortplayer, etc... Wifi, BT, CF, SDIO, etc.. I'm about to make some scanners for garage saleing and this is turned out to be the best PDA for that purpose. I loved mine.
Android phone. I wish there was an Android MP3 player, because that would just be sick.
get an lg incite. Really. that is what I use for my youtube/mp3/light web browsing. it will support up to a 32gb sd card. replaceable battery headphone jack wifi bluetooth and its a pretty good phone. also you can get them for under $60 on ebay (I hate ebay).
@D4rkSoRRoW
Agree with the cowon audio, they can't be beat. However, I would avoid archos completely, unless you can get one for next to nothing
There is Sony Walkman, Microsoft Zune HD and several another music players. However, nothing is perfect as the Apple iPod Touch in terms touch sensitivity and number of applications.
Samsung Mondi, any of the 4.3" Smart Q devices, Archos 5,
Dark Sorrow, I own a D2. I would not EVER recommend Cowon products until they have rockbox ported. Sound quality most people don't care about (I do obviously), the software is some of the worst I have ever used, and I have a Windows Mobile phone. I dumped it in lieu of my rockboxed iPod mini (went back actually). Any sound quality that Cowon could formerly charge huge amounts for is beaten soundly by a cheap refurbished Sansa Clip(+), something with decent stock software as well as full (but crash prone) rockbox support.
iPod touch 1G 8-16GB go for 50-70.
I don't see the problem with the touch.
A Zune HD 32GB can be had for around 130 refurbished.
I think he would be happier with an iPod touch. It has a better browser (despite crappier hardware), games, and applications, and is easy to use.
Definitely not an Archos 5, its too big, and at that price might as well buy two iPod touches.
So far I've bashed everything but haven't given suggestions.
Droid Eris sounds like something that would fit in your criteria.

anyway.. i dont need userfriendlines, im a freak that just wants quality, and ipod quality suxx badass, u know that
Have you tried the Sansa Clips? They're much better (I prefer buttons to touchscreen, only good thing is you can skip to any place in the song, but thats not what I usually do anyways). I meant the actual Cowon firmware, everything is really non-intuitive. If they hired some good software professionals they would actually have a solid device. I didn't get the S9 since it wasn't microusb,

i tried the sansas, yes they are cool, but quality is crap compared to cowons devices. im talking about music quality, not design, or whatever
it doesnt matter for me if it looks cool or is easy to use, the music has to sound awsome
probably the firmware isnt that awsome for everyone, but the fact that its all flash opens many many new possibilities
but anyway, the sansa clip is too small, and i hate non-touchscreen players xD
I have had a Zune 80gb (not HD), iPod classic (now 64gb Touch), and briefly the Archos 5 Android Tablet with Android. Other than the Archos, I would say that they all have their good points. The Archos was a complete fail for me. I couldn't charge the unit while using it, it would not connect to my home wifi, and the screen felt too soft (resistive, not capacitive). I would say that if you want more storage than 32gb, currently I would go with iPod Touch (I see Zune has already released their 64gb version). Seeing this, I would recommend going with the one that has the screen size you like.
I do find it funny that (over at an iPod Touch forum I frequent) the very people that automatically denounce anything ro do with the Zune HD all but salivate when they see a Zune HD theme for their iPod Touch. But then, I am easily amused...and distracted. What was I saying?...
btw dratini, u know that u have a dragonir as avatar and not a dratini? xD
Yeah I thought Dratini wasn't too pretty, in synthetic sound tests the Clip and Cowon have no sound quality problems, so I don't know why you didn't like it.
With features like MP enhance and the soundstage settings for the Cowon though, it does sound better, but at stock they sound pretty much the same, except the Cowon is a bit colder and more analytical (I like this sound, but the UI is too bad for me to use), the Clip is more compressed but people rarely notice that unless they have expensive headphones.
Wish they would port Rockbox for the D2 already, its been unstable for years now.

Hi all, this is my first post so I hope I am following all the correct procedures and forum rules
Basically I love listening to music. I was thinking of getting my first android phone soon, and the phone currently at the top of my list is the HTC Sensation, becuase as far as I'm concerned it can do everything (shame it doesn't have a tv tuner but i'll live without that ). The only thing I'm worried about is battery life. Would I be able to get through the day listening to music, some light internet browsing and playing games? Also how good is the sound quality through in-ear headphones?
Thanks,
Hayden
The sound quality is good with the srs pre set. dont know what you'd compare it with but to me i enjoy it but the speaker could be louder. Battery wise i've lasted the whole day with browsing, listening to music and playing a few games. also you might want to try m.tvcatchup.com if you want to watch tv instead of a tuner
The main battery drain on the phone is the screen, since you are likely to listen to music with the screen off, the battery life should be fine. I think you can get 5hrs of use out of the phone on single charge with the screen on all the time, much longer with the screen off.
If you pair the phone with a good set of headphones the audio quality is very good. The default music player have sound enhancement setting for the speaker and equalizers for headphones. There is also a music widget automatic come on the lock screen when music is playing, this way you don't need to unlock the phone to change track.
The only problem is the phone only came with 8Gb micro sd card. If you have lots of music, you will need to buy a higher capacity card.
Thanks very much for the information concerning music playback. Having never been an android user before how does the stock music player compare to say an Ipods?
I can't wait until this phone gets released sim free here in the UK. Wish i could get my hands on one now but it seems to be ages (like half a month) until it gets released
Thanks
Hayden

Dunno about the iPhone music player but get Poweramp when you get your phone. A couple of quid gets you something much better than stock.
As for the UK, CPW near me were going to be stocking it last week so I'd check at yours.

I got my Sensation sim free from CeX for £449. It's unlocked, and although it's the Vodafone version, I'm going to be flashing to Android Revolution HD as soon as I can

Just to clarify, the stock music player on the Sensation is a HTC app, and not the stock Gingerbread music player. It looks better than Gingerbread music player and have the same functions.
I don't think there are many differences between the ipod music player. The HTC app don't have album cover flow, but you can put music widget on home screen and lock screen which make access to music app much easier than double tap the home button in iOS.
I think you will be very happy with the Sensation. This phone is the easiest Android device I've used. There is a much smaller learning curve than a stock Android phone and HTC Sense is a very intuitive user interface.
P.S. Check out this CNET top 5 Android music players if you are not happy with the stock music app.

I've been watching the Android scene for a while now and have not bought a phone yet because the hardware hasn't met my needs. So I'm coming back to where I started tinkering with WM5 and 6.5 phones on this forum.
Can anyone recommend an Android phone that isn't the size of a brick, fits snugly in my hand.
Has
NFC
dual/quad core
Micro Sd slot
1080p video recording @ 30 fps
HDMI out
Accepts Keyboard and Mouse input either through BT or USB
Wifi N
And will run on UK 4G.
Can be or has been rooted
Does such a phone exist yet?
I'm not intrested in big screens as it makes the phone almost as big as a tablet and from a portability aspect this is not good.

I'm sorry, but you want an iPhone...for siri?? The lame voice assistant that answers questions at about a 60% accuracy rate? The one that makes you look like a douchebag that's too cool to talk to actual people, so instead you talk to your phone as if it were a person? The one that most users see on TV and go "AWWW COOL" but then they play with it for 5 minutes then get bored?
Not to mention the phone itself matches less than half the criteria you specified.
Just buy a damn iPhone and leave this forum to the adults. There are Android phones out there like the Xperia NXT line that better match what you said you wanted, but I can already tell that you'll ***** about one or two of your criteria not being there, totally ignoring that the alternative phone you're looking at matches even less..but has a gimicky voice assistant which somehow makes it all ok.
Helpful please

*sigh* Wow a one liner that I could expect from nothing more than a child.
I didn't say I was going to get an I phone I like the idea of a hands free digital assistant. I suppose you could argue that the amount of money you spend on an Iphone/contract would be best put towards a real PA But I'm not going to do that.
I can develop android apps so it would make sense to get an Android phone. But I don't just want a run of the mill phone wifi and gps handset with a terrible camera. There are very few Phones on the market at the moment that fit my hardware needs. I'm fussy because I buy a contract and am then stuck with the hardware for the duration. I could stick with my N8 as it's done me proud, I don't need another phone but if I do upgrade then I want the phone to fit my needs not something that I'm going to be disapointed with just because someone said "Oh get it, it's got this cool feature" ;and only to find that cool feature is not on my want list for a replacement phone.
I should thank you for the other info I'll look into that handset.
If there are any other Android Handsets anyone could think of that are pretty stacked then I'll take a look. Shame Nokia didn't go with Android as they would have killed the competition.
Eva!
Ok so android has got Eva. That's good. Right so Pa sorted. Just need to find thr right hardware device.
Looks to me like you want a Galaxy S3. It meets most, if not all of your wants in a phone. The only one I'm not sure about is the 1080p video recording.
Nope
S3 is way too big and flimsy, failed drop tests. It wouldn't last 2 minutes in my back pocket. At the moment I've got my eye on the HTC One X range although I have been looking at concept phones too which look very sexy and although aren't real, they could be next year or the end of this year. Might have to wait a bit longer for android hardware to meet my needs.
It's a shame that no one want's to start porting an Android build to Nokia Symbian hardware. I know it's an epic task but the bootloader is available so It's not impossible.
Nokia got bailed out by Microsoft and part of the deal obviously was going to be that Nokia use Windows as it's OS. Android dev license is still cheaper than MS.
Still looking
Went to a few phone shops to try out some of the devices. A lot of phones are getting too big to hold. If I want a tablet I'll buy a tablet I don't want a bigger screen.
The Experia P is the size of handset I'm looking for and the build quality looks ok.
I see sony are releasing the Xperia GX soon so will see if this meets the Camera/Audio expectations. At the moment Audio quality in videos are what I'm looking at. The quality of audio in Nokias N8 is still trumping Android phones. If you are being recorded instead of the one doing the recording then the mic quality isn't so good on android unless you are on top of the phone. If anyone can beg to differ then I'm open to suggestions and What's the point of a 1080p recording device without the ability to store over 16GB of video?
Still looking...
OK Found the phone.
Just one problem I doubt it's going to make it to the UK

What a pisser...
go for galaxy s3
Android doesn't really have any good voice assistant yet, i've tried all of them and they are terrible at even the simplest of commands. But, Google has said they are working on one to compete with Siri. That being said, i would go with Google's own Galaxy Nexus ($350) as they will get all the Android updates first (since its Google's phone) And the Nexus is one of the few that can actually use Google Wallet (NFC) The screen isn't too big, its comfortable in your hand, the battery life is good, and you should have no problem finding a keyboard dock for this phone. In my opinion, the best bang for your buck would be the Galaxy Nexus, and you can buy it from the Google Play Store. Best of luck!
Google has released google now which is way better than siri! And it's true that google wants to release something better that will compete beat siri

VOTING SORRY IT WAS MISLEADING ( VOTE YES! FOR HELPFUL) ( VOTE NO! FOR USELESS )
First of all Not sure if this is where it should be i thought putting this in off topic was too far from the point and reading through other threads it didn't seem to fit anywhere, Anyway i'll post it here anyway i would like to think most people on this website would appreciate this and see if i have to valid points and some cool things to show you maybe.
I would firstly like to start with some cool Android game consoles being developed by a company called JXD http://www.jxd.hk/ they're other companies doing this (not as good and more expensive) in my opinion but i'll supply information for you do to your own researched at the bottom of this thread.
Anyway This is the newest console released the S7300 just released a day ago it's quite amazing system and extremely cheap ( older models if you have a budget to test these out starting as low as $20 - $40 USD) This latest one is about $150 it's android the specs are listed here
As you can see the device has possibility for some good gaming and a start to some innovative ideas and maybe bigger companies creating devices similar to this.
What is the point?
Well i was a huge user of my Xperia play and Galaxy s3 which i recently sold for a Android iphone 5 rip off mainly because it looked good worked great and was light enough to go jogging without it annoying me, but this gave me a lack of gaming which i love about my android mobile so i decided to look for an android gaming device it took an hour or so but i found hundreds some on ebay some on random websites, after separating the over priced devices and the ones with poor design and bad hardware i found a website or 2 with the device i was going to purchase, and after looking all day i found there is a good start to this android gaming, but how come it hasn't set off bigger or faster yet, i find it a shame.
What to do?
Well many may disagree but this is the only website i use for anything remotely android related, but i was thinking if XDA could add apart of the forum for unpopular devices such as these underground branded ( Non rip off android devices and the emerging gaming android console and devices ) to increase the speed it picks up i believe if we have people talking about it more and helping sharing in customized apps themes etc... it might help set off the community to use it more which may encourage developers to add more support.
I mean Why Not! we have tablets but everything seems to be big brands Sony, Samsung, Apple, Nokia, i thought this was a website for unlocking your device for better use and doing things with it the majority of us think is "Cool".
I might add more later But for now i'll leave some links to a few devices i looked through and website to purchase or compare prices for your curiosity.
Developer jxe website all their devices are listed there but no purchasing options but good to get the names to Google
Another product i thought would be good to mention just for the hell of it if you go jogging like me or like high quality sound with less wires and cheap at the same time would be to purchase a MW600 it's a Bluetooth headset and you just plug your headphone into it and it connects wirelessly to you phone.
http://www.willgoo.com/ - This website seems to sell any modded gaming android devices from all the companys making them at the moment at the cheapest price and a vast collection to choose from.
The latest device out is http://www.willgoo.com/jxd-s7300-du...ons-8gb-p-306.html?referrer=CNWR_771331638507
Reason i liked this among the rest?
for one the touch screen isn't the out dated touch resistant most others use.
First to have an actual dual analog joysticks! and not like the xperia play with the stupid touch slide which i found tedious after a day of use.
2 back buttons and simple nice thin design.
highest resolution offered.
and does say it has 3G i don't know if it's via a sim card or it means through wifi tethering with another device who knows but i'm happy either way

Unmarked android phones.
I'll list a few android phones i think are semi decent and can be cheap and stilll good looking on a budget here is the top 2 websites i trust and can be cheap if you search well
eForChina and Dhgate
These 2 websites have plenty mobile phones people could check out at a cheap price, the one i purchased because i wanted a decent phone that runs android but looks like an iphone 5 is zophone 5
It's a little more steep in price than the others but i managed to get it for £120 off ebay but its light and does what i need it to do.
Done more research the website most china branded (unbranded) mobiles are released to http://android-sale.com/
this website's most famous brand seems to be the goophone for the iphone 5 android clones but they also make some really good unique none clone designs packing quad core 2gb ram models, would be good if you're looking for some unique designed phone you won't see any friends using.
That thing looks slick. Will do more research.
Yeah it would be nice to see games compatible

It has a dual core mali 400, and a dual core a9 clocked at 1.5, it should run most games other mali 400 devices run. I pre ordered one and now waiting for it. I hope it gets popular enough to have a community and a few custom rom builds. It has quite decent specs for emulation(main purpose its being promoted for) and should run almost every game on the android market. The main issue with JDX devices is battery life (is why I hope for custom roms), but the device claims to come pre rooted, you can see pictures of it supposedly having play store support, so if a community does surge for it it could be as popular as the kindle in terms of a dedicated community interested in custom android builds that support better battery use and remove some of its bloatware. im replacing the free 8g card ill get for pre ordering with a 32(64 if it takes it) card and have a decent 40gig snes/ps1 emulation device with touch controls that will let me do the basic things i do on my phone. Since i plan to tether it from my phone, I'm aiming to keep my phone pocketed the whole time, Headset calls, redirect texts to the JXD, and play/browse on the 7 inch screen so if a call comes in my gaming wont be interrupted something that ruins some games that reboot when a call comes in.
Maybe Padone 2 ? over 7k mAh, four core etc... Nothing but fine gaming devices with possibilities
They should make a special section in the forum for JXD Devices. Especially for developers that wants to help with making the device easier to use.
