Liberated FR008 & Exhange ActiveSync - HTC Aria Android Development

Hey guys-
I recently went from Liberated b005 to the FR008 and everything is working great except one thing: Exchange ActiveSync.
I have my normal email with gmail, and my business email & calendar is on Exchange. I am using the HTC "Mail" app on the phone. The problem is that it does not get the mail in a timely fashion. With the previous Liberated b005 Eclair it worked perfectly, just as expected, with no tweaking required. I'd get mail on my phone within a few minutes of when I got it on my PC. But now I generally have to open the Mail app and manually refresh it to get any Exchange mail.
Under "Accounts & sync" settings, I have "Background data" checked and "Auto-sync" (which I understand is aka "push email") is unchecked. Maybe it works right with Auto-sync checked but my battery life is horrible with it set that way.
I have "Exchange ActiveSync" account
Under "Data and synchronization" for that account, it has:
Schedule: Manual
Sync mail: checked
Sync contacts: not checked
Sync calendar: checked
If I click "Schedule", it has "Peak time" which is Mon-Fri 7:30am-7:00pm, and then "Frequency" Peak times: Every 15 minutes and Off-peak times: Every hour
I don't recall these "peak time" and etc. from the b005 settings. It just seemed to work as expected without me having to fool with it.
Any ideas why this isn't syncing my mail ever 15 minutes as I would expect during "peak time"?
Oh and by the way, thanks attn1 for the ROMs. This stuff is brilliant.

i don't think theres anything particularly wrong with what the app is doing.
you put that the schedule is manual...rather than you manually setting it, perhaps it means it only refreshes when you refresh it manually?
i would set it to auto sync and perhaps change a few other things to manage battery life better? disable gps/wifi when not needed, lower screen brightness all that stuff.
i know i'm not extraordinarily helpful, but thats all i've got.

Well, clearly under the "manual" settings, it appears that it's supposed to be doing something automatically.
I already manage gps & wifi and all that other stuff to improve battery life. I still have to charge the phone mid-day. Turning on Auto-sync may "fix" my mail issue (work around it, really), but the cost is way too high in terms of battery life.

I have my exchange account set as follows:
Days: Every day
Peak time start: 05:00
Peak time end: 22:00
Peak times: As items arrive
Off-peak times: Every 4 hours
Works brilliantly.
First off I think "Auto-sync" being off is your issue. I do not believe that the "Auto-sync" setting refers to "push mail". I believe the auto-sync setting is general for all apps and how they are allowed to sync data either manual or automagically, where as push mail has to do with your mail client only. I believe setting your exchange account to receive items as they arrive is "push mail". I have Auto-sync enabled.
Think of it this way, your schedule settings are for the exchange app in particular where as the "auto-sync" setting is for all apps that use a data connection so no matter what you specify in the app settings, the general data sync settings will over ride them. By turning off auto-sync you are telling your phone to not allow any app to sync on it's own but to allow the app to sync when it is launched manually.
The only other thought that comes to mind is that if you are using wifi and connected to the same network that your exchange server is on, your phone will not be able to sync your mail unless you turn off your wifi or you have your wifi set to sleep after 15 minutes of phone sleep. Once your wifi sleeps your exchange mail will use the carrier network and be able to sync.

OK, I get it.
"Background Data" is aka "push"? Or, in other words, there is no way to allow a timed sync like a normal old fashioned email app, while also disabling push email, correct?

Push refers to how an exchange server sends email to your mobile client, it has nothing to do with the "background data" or "auto-sync" settings. No matter how you want your exchange client to sync, either timed like every 5 minutes or immediately when items are received, you have to have "auto-sync" enabled for it to work.
Let's break it down like this:
With "auto-sync" enabled your mail should update per the schedule you set automatically without launching the app.
With "auto-sync" disabled your mail will only update when you launch it from the application shortcut.
Does that make sense?
NOTE: Background data must be enabled as well.

turning on auto sync isn't a work-around; as a$$h4t pointed out, it is a solution. for your phone to grab mail as per your schedule, auto sync must be enabled.
as far as your battery woes go, i'm at a loss as to how it could be draining so much if you already manage your battery life pretty well. i would install the app watchdog task manager to keep an eye on any processes trying to eat more battery than they need to.
also, a readthrough of this tutorial never hurts.

The Background/Auto-sync settings are purely advisory, and many apps ignore them completely. To change the HTC mail sync behavior you need to change the settings in the HTC mail prefs.
When you do set Background and/or Auto-sync, most of the Google apps (and some of the HTC ones) start polling the network regularly, which is what kills your battery. Weather, stocks, gmail, etc etc. In my experience it takes quite a lot of tweaking to run them all down. Once done though, I've been able to re-enable those global settings without killing the battery.

thanks for the tips. Auto-sync is working fine now with Exchange and it's not draining the battery unduly, well not any more than it drains it with auto-sync turned off.
I can't seem to remove apps like News & Weather, GMail, Stocks, etc. that would use background data services and which I do not ever use. Guess I can just delete the apk files.

You can go into settings under "Accounts & sync" and go into each account that you don't want to sync and uncheck sync. I usually do that with news, stocks and weather right off the bat when I set up a phone. That will cut down on the background data and help with your battery life.

you can remove certain system apps via this method. i always do this for facebook, news/weather, stocks and things like that.
and for more battery help, check this out.

thanks. i'll check it out. location-based wifi would be the bomb for battery saving, but Y5 does not work on Froyo/Aria and everything else that has this feature is a paid app... guess I just am not yet willing to spring for it. Cheap == me.

Connection at specific time/frequency

I'm looking for an app which can, as happens on nokia phones or on iphone, enable internet connection with the specified and desired frequency.
I'd like to download mails and get apps synced using the internet connection which should turn ON only, for example, 1 time each hour...
Internet Connection should be kept OFF during time other than when sync is needed also to preserve unuseful battery consumption.
Any ideas?
By Android settings I can see only "keep internet connection always on".
Look for Timeriffic in the Market
Really unuseful app for my request... sorry but removed.

Did I make a so strange question??
Is there a so stupid answer or solution or it's impossible to do what I ask?
Tasker can set Auto Sync or Mobile Data entirely on/off on any kind of schedule you want. Mobile Data manipulation relies on APNDroid, which might have caveats or requirements, not sure.
Tasker can do a zillion other things too.
Honestly, however, with all of the things I have running on my Nexus One, including K9 Mail syncing two IMAP mailboxes, weather, some periodic GPS stuff going on in Tasker I have set up, I still see 2-2.5%/hr battery usage. I charge nightly, so this is plenty of battery life for me.

[Q] Enable always-on mobile data

I've checked the forums but still theres no answer on what exactly is and what exactly it does, its pros and cons of the 'Enable always-on mobile data'
I would like to know what exactly is that option what sort of apps get affected cause right now gmail still working for me with that setting off. The thing is some people claim better battery life some people claim the opposite.
Anyone knows official use for it?? anyone? I started to test the battery life on it to see if it helps in the event it doesnt I would say the mytouch 4g is the worst phone ever.... i hardly get 10 hours of battery life with the phone just sitting on the desk...

'Always-On' Data tells your phone to open a data connection whenever one is available in your area, not just whenever you need it ('On-Demand' Data). If always-on is activated, your apps can connect and sync data in the background, unbeknownst to you. I got caught with it on my first phone bill, and it ended up costing me a good few hundred dollars. There are a few things you can do to help:
Settings > Accounts and Sync is your best friend. You can choose what accounts sync what data, and how often. The less you sync, the less data is used and the less time your radio spends transmitting (hopefully boosting your battery life a bit). You can also disable background syncing completely here, but that means you will have to manually sync your GMail, Facebook, Twitter etc.
As far as your battery life is concerned, under Settings > Location there are two options to 'Use wireless connections' and 'Use GPS satellites'. Having both of these ticked will use much more battery. Definitely untick 'use GPS satellites' and if you don't use any location-based widgets (like HTC weather) or services (Footprints etc), turn the other one off too. That should give you a bit more than ten hours
Let me know how you get on! Good luck!

I got kinda confused here. Your saying that settings -> Wireless & Networks ->Mobile Networks -> Uncheck Enable always-on mobile data
By turning it off you get less data consumption per month?
More battery life?
Any dissadvantage?
By your post I assume that if its uncheked then apps wont sync? right now i still receive my gmail and stuff.
100% correct. Turn it off and you'll have to sync your apps manually, but less data and more battery
If you're using email set up with push, this option has to remain on. Otherwise, after a certain amount of time (5 min on most htc's), the data connection is severed and your push will no longer work.
And yes, there is greater battery drain with it on, and higher data usage.

Whats up with Push notifications in Mango?

Ive had my Omnia 7 with Mango RTM for about 3 weeks now and one of the most annoying things about it is the terrible UN-reliabiliy of push notifications. I don't care much about weather tiles or tweets but this things is utterly and completely useless for email.
Ive tried using both my @live and @gmail accounts set to "as item arrives" but it seems to only work for the first email. So many times i randomly check emails on the desktop to discover 3-4 new emails (sent 2hrs ago) and glancing on my phone there is none. It just says (email is up to date)
Anyone with advice please share otherwise its one of those things i cant cope with, might have to sadly go back to IOS. My iPhone 4 had "functional" email

Yes, i have excellent 3G signal where i live. Full bars
Wifi is also turned on but tried using data only and still push stop working after a few emails.
Considering 99.9% of users have reported extremely reliable push in Mango, including myself, I think the issue may be with your wireless carrier maybe dropping idle connections... Or another signal issue.
I have my Gmail set to receive every 15mins. Have you ticked the 'email' check box in 'content to synchronize' in Gmail settings? Otherwise I aint got any ideas. All my email accounts update on the start screen fine.

Yep, my e-mail notifications work perfectly fine. No issues here. Sometimes, I get so many e-mails, my phone is too attentive to this fact and it gets annoying, but hey, at least that means its working.
i wasn't really hoping to hear positive news about push, means its just me
my latest setup is to have my phone @live id push everything but unticked the "sync email" and then created an outlook email account with the same @live email that syncs email, calendars etc with push
what does the "logging" bit have to do with email? its in email settings (off -recommended, basic, advanced)
my push works fine but just for the first few emails then for some reason it stops working. i wonder if its the constant connection/disconnection from wifi that trips it up
I have web.de...so it's a free email provider, too. Normally you can login every 15 mins at free mailproviders. My phone uses mango beta 1 and it loads every mail I get. Maybe you have set up something wrong...

I've had this happening before on Nodo. I figured out I wasn't deleting enough emails, keeping loads of them as read for no particular reason and at some point the inbox on my phone would get full and stop synchronising. Happened about 3 times since I've had the phone and I solved that by deleting plenty of emails on the phone itself before doing a manual synchronisation.
I'm not saying it's the solution but that worked for me.

Same WP7 device, same eMail accounts, same problem, and I also have an iPhone 4 with full working push notification!
I'm trying to let them work... Keep in touch...
I have LG Optimus 7 with Mango RTM. Push notifications worked fine before Mango for both personal @live and corporate exchange mail. After Mango update push notifications has worked similarly as the first post describes (hasn't worked properly).
Today I manually added APN setting in mobile network settings and after that push notifications has worked. So for me the problem seemed to be a network connection issue, even if I was connected to WiFi.
Before Mango I had not touched APN settings in this phone and 3g did work.
It's worth knowing battery level also affects push reliability - to save power it turns the channel off when the charge is below around 25%.

I've two battery, so I never enable battery saver...
I'm waiting for the Hotmail event in San Fransisco and NYC: if tomorrow emails will not arrive in push, I'll hard reset my WP7... :-(
In this two days, sometimes emails arrive in push, and sometimes not. Also, if I manually sync, sometimes it gives 2-3 different sync errors... :S I hope that is a server problem that will solved soon... :-\

Official ICS dialer and exchange email bugs?

I am having consistency issues with the dialer and setting issues with exchange email. It seems as thought the dialer does not search the first name any more but doesn't always search the last name either. I cannot figure out why it works sometimes and not others. Also, It seems the update negated any of the exchange sync settings. For instance, i have mine set to sync every 15 minutes during peak and none on off peak but it push emails all of the time. Which may explain the loss of battery life.
Any thoughts?

So I kind of figured it out on my own.... The dialer is just very slow to process. If you dial too quickly it does not filter the names in your contacts at all. Email, I master reset my phone which corrected the exchange sync issue.

Rogers Mobile - Jelly Bean - Unable to sync with Exchange Email

Hey all,
It looks like Jelly Bean is rolled out to our phones at work (Rogers Mobile - Canada). ). It seems once we update the phone the email stops syncing due to a “security error”.
We’ve tried the following
- Removing/Adding the account,
- Ensuring signal coverage
- Verifying APN info is correct,
- WIFI connection as opposed to 3G or H.
- Powercycling
- We’ve removed the email account, removed the PIN, added the email account, setup a PIN as per email policy, and tried to sync
I was able to fix 1 phone – where when we sync’d the phone it automatically popped up with a request to confirm the phone’s PIN number. When we typed it in twice the email started working.. woot. I can't seem to trick it into "confirming" this PIN tho, (like my last bullet point above).
I haven't wiped out the phone yet for testing...... It will most likely be the next step.
I tried to leave the most info I could here... but if you need anything thats not corporate email settings, I can leave anything else. Mainly I just wanted to see if this was happening for others. It seems to be affecting Telus clients here too.
Thanks for the suggestions.
-Napalm
*Edit - Well, even though the sync settings in the email configuration say it is on - the "Power Bar" widget I threw on the screen showed it being off... so I enabled it through the widgit... then it started working. I also cleared the Email Cache in the Applications > Exchange Services app... which I did at the same time.. I'm not sure which one seems to be 'resolving' this at this time, but will test further. Any thoughts as to why the update seems to disable the sync? As well, I can't find the Sync option in the settings... which is weird... hence me using the Widgit to do it.
** Edit Edit - Ok, well, straight up - it looks like the upgrade does disable the sync. Sync options normally found on ICS (an on/off switch much like the WIFI on off) is no longer avaliable on the Accounts and Sync menu. The only work around I've seen so far is the Power Control Widgit to fully enable the syncing. Odd?
Thanks again.
Thanks! I used the Power Control and I can get my work email and hotmail again. It is on telus usually but Petro-Canada (Rogers) right now.
active sync and jelly bean
What a relief you found the reason for the companies 4.1x devices not synchronizing with active sync / exchange sync after update. Thanks! We even worked on certificates because we didn´t find other reasons.
There is another place to switch on the global sync option: phone app, accounts, sync settings.
Thx again,
Rudi
