my dad is going to get me a samsung captivate for my birthday next week, and I really want to get the most out of the device. I have several questions that I could not find the answers to:
1. what is the chance that loading a custom rom will brick the device? I see a ton of disclaimers on rom pages and stuff. how dangerous is this?
2. can you fix a "bricked" captivate? is it possible to flash it back to stock, or does bricked mean perminatly dead?
3. how long will it be until there is a gingerbread rom? I wanted to get the nexus s, but I have to go att. how long will I have to wait for that gingerbread tastyness?

1. There is always a chance to brick your phone even if it is .00009% it is still there.
2. Make sure you can get into download and recovery mode with the 3 button combo. As long as you can get there then you can just about always recover no matter what you do to it. Key word being almost. There are also other ways to recover, look around and I am sure you will find them.
3. That part is still up in the air. Untill we get a full port. Right now we are still waiting (well at least some of us) for an offical 2.2 update let alone a 2.3 update.
Make sure you read at least the first page in the rom thread you are gonna flash for any extra instructions
so pretty much it is unlikely that I will brick it, and even if I do, it is possible to fix?

It is highly unlikely that you will brick it. Most bricks can be recovered from. The only time I have not been able to recover is when att did the OTA and it bricked my phone and I didn't know about jtag at the time so I sent back to att and it was replaced. Is it 100% umbrickable? No but i would say 99% as long as you read up first and follow the directions to a T you will be fine. I have flashed about 1500 times and nothing i could not recover from

thanks. I just wanted to make sure that it was fairly safe to modify, because the phone is not cheap,and it would kind of suck to brick the device 10min ito owning it.
ya I was the same way as you, kind of nervous about bricking my new phone. Just read up on all of the various rom threads. If you have a good idea what you're doing the chances of bricking should be quite small.
I agree (with all of the above) and there is an excellent how-to link to YouTube vids in the Development section (too late and heading to bed or I'd link it) that steps you through rooting and installing ROM. I've been there, done that but it's a great reference for anyone thinking about installing a custom ROM....nice to SEE someone do it to ease the fears.
Now, I know I read about a one click solution that was not allowed to come out. My question is, when are we going to have a one click unroot? I have no problems using commands to root my device, I am simply asking the question in a thread form. This way "The Finders of Root" can see there is client base for it. Thanks for any answers or comments.

I would like to see it, and hoped it was coming, but there is some debate on it atm.
Some of us feel that users should learn to use adb, and how to flash RUUs, to make it easier for them to recover from a goof in the future.

I agree that peeps should learn about it so they don't flood the forum with "help I pricked my phone" posts...but at the same time I think there should be an easy alternative for those of us who can't seem to get the hang of using adb. For some reason I can never get adb to work for me...I am however very comfortable changing roms and doing things in hboot. I just came from the incredible and was really looking forward to getting rid of all the crap on my phone that I will never use but I'm not confident enough in adb to obtain root that way...so yes there is a want for an idiot proof way to root the thunderbolt. Just my $.02.
I would like to see the one-click root released only because it is the safest way for a noon like me to root. When you spend $200.00+ on a phone you want to get the maximum out of the phone without bricking it. Why not let the user decide what he wants to use?

What happens when you flash a bad .zip and you HAVE to use adb to get your phone back to a working state?
It is much safer having someone without allot of experience rooting their new device by way of say a one click method then entering wrong commands and surely bricking their device. Just my opinion. I have rooted several android phones and the Thunderbolt is allot more involved, much more involved then any rookie should fool with.
So bring on the one click method if it available. I'm sure many are willing to pay for a great app like that. I sure would.

A long as you are backing up before you flash then you should never have that problem... Honestly we could go back and forth all day about this but all we are trying to get across is that there is a valid market for a one click root out there

That's like saying that we need to learn how to operate a manual transmission when we own an automatic transmission. If it comes up, it comes up, and people can use that guide or any other stickied guide in all the other dev forums to ge themselves out of a jam.
I can tell you that I personally have no intention of ever flashing a custom ROM. All I want to do is root the phone and delete bitbop, blockbuster, etc. Why should I be subjected to arbitrary disciplinary action under the guise of 'for your own good'.
I mean, I donate money to pretty much all the devs who's products I use because I respect their work. So, needlessly stifling efforts to make things easier for the end user, and also someone who may end up buying your lunch, is unproductive and hurtful to the community at large.

I really hope you're not withholding it because you feel people should learn how to do it the right way. I was in the irc chat for 10 hours both friday and saturday trying to get help but since everyone and their brother was in there i didn't get any help. I understand its tough taking time helping someone out and getting nothing in return. if devs (like you) wanted to get paid for their work i'd happily, happily pay. I have the money, but i dont have the time/patience right now. Some people dont all day to learn how to do something just to get rid of the bloat on their phone. Unless there's another nonroot way, I've been waiting to get all my game data (i.e. angry birds)of my rooted og droid to transfer over to my new phone. Only way i've had luck in the past with titanium backup pro. if I could get help there at least it will be a start.

boot into recovery and flash the backup you made
or
boot into fastboot and run PASSIMG.zip/PG05IMG.zip...then re-root
just so folks that are new here know: these guys saying you need adb are lying, or don't know what they're talking about. I rooted my Nexus One with one-click and NEVER needed adb either before or after rooting. I flashed hundreds of ROMs and even had a few screwups(lost recovery, bootloops, flashed bad .zips, etc..) and I always recovered NEVER needing adb.
I have never need adb post rooting before either. Unless you screw up the rooting process, otherwise you can just boot into recovery and restore to the nand backup you made.

It seems like the whole easy-root thing opened a can of worms. I'd be more than happy to release my easy rooter for use by the general public if jcase says it's alright but I think the topic here is unrooting, at least that's what it says in the title. As someone said you should have no problem flashing a stock update file and it is a good idea to have an unroot method for warranty purposes.

I have read alot on here (extremely informative forum) and have decided that by rooting I would be able to accomplish some things I wouldnt otherwise be able to do. I was hoping that some folks here would help shed some light on a few things for me. I keep reading about titanium backup and 3emod recovery and I was wondering if those are needed before I try to root my phone or if those are for rom flashing and kernels. Are there are any key things that I need to do like back up my original settings or something on my stock phone before I root it? If so, could you please explain the easiest way of doing this. Again, I am not wanting to flash roms(waiting for GB), just to root.
From what Ive read it seems all you have to do is install some samsung drivers(kies) and run a superoneclick program and thats that. Is it really this simple?

If all you want to do is "root" your phone. Yes, install the samsung drivers ( I downloaded kies mini and it installed them for me, from samsung ) And hook the phone up with usb debugging checked and use the superoneclick, it really is that simple.
Titanium backup is great so you don't have to go and redownload all your apps again, even saves the information, like if you were 8 levels into a game. Very useful app.
3emodd is used to get to the clockwork mod so you can install "roms", since you don't want to do this don't worry about it.

Regarding:

3. "You can soft/hard brick your phone if you aren't careful." - What IS a "soft/hard brick" of your phone. In what way then, should I be careful?
Maybe it is NOT fair of me to ask you, also, it seems to me that you are very familiar with it, but would you recommend a novice like me (in this case) to root his new phone, less then a month old, considering the "risks", if there are any, in view of the possible advantages I might find with a rooted phone?

Well I'm sure most of the case, people end up soft or hard bricking their phone because they havent read the directions over and over again and get a little too ambitious. Soft bricking is recoverable but when you flash an incorrect rom or kernel, basically keeps boot looping I think. But you can still get into fastboot or recovery. Hard brick is when your phone won't turn on after messing around with the bootloader or something. Sorry, I can't really explain the technical stuff myself as I'm still learning. I'm familiar with rooting and flashing roms on several phones but I don't know if I would say I'm "very familiar" with it. If you're going to be rooting phones often, then I would suggest you learn the steps involved but I mean if this is gonna be the only phone you root and you're not confident in yourself, then I would suggest either a) get it done by someone who knows what they are doing, b) buy one thats already rooted.
OK, thank you for your honest reply. I'll surely take this into consideration. For now, I think, I'll keep my phone the way it is right now - it's doing just fine...
Still, if anyone, with maybe more experience in rooting phones, would like to reply to this thread, I would not mind at all.

I was looking for a definite answer as well, as to whether it is safe or not and if so which method, not looking to read several reams of posts that mean little to me. I have read that Samsung chips are defective and rooting the two offered methods on this site are dangerous. So no developments in the past 3-4 months? If so I would have expected a split thread for this from the other ones...either way. Have no time to read filler on forums from end users.
I've rooted phones before all without any issues and always find having to read through forums posts are fruitless endeavors, easier to just do it. But this phone is someone else's and I need to ensure I HAVE A LITTLE MORE RESPONSIBILITY HERE.
I only want to root their phone and nothing more, so they can take control of their security.

Just to let people know I have tried to root using one click method and it failed! No harm to phone but ineffective. The one posted at addictivetips. I never have had a one click method for for me to date, in all years at rooting phones. So anyone that can verify for me a method that does work, I will be grateful. A step by step guide, do not care how many steps or how much I have to type in! Just something that works without fail.

Rooting Galaxy Note GT-N7000 with KK7
Hello Guys,
I'm not knew to root. Did it twice but that was on Galaxy S3's. The Note is not as easy.
The 3rd Droid needs to be rooted, because the carrier has no upgrade from GB 2.3.6!
Also, this Note is SIM locked, can I root with it? I do not find an online site to unlock my Carrier. Tried them all.
I searched all over this site for days but do not find a CF-Root for this kernel, KK7
Hope you can point me in the correct direction.

Hi, tomorrow I'm getting a nexus 7 (2013), and it's going to be my first android device, the thing is, as the first android device, I don't want to screw it up as soon as I get it.
There are some apps which I would like to get for it, for example the sixaxis controller app and anti ads apps but they require rooting, so the question is, should I root it and how safe is rooting. As my first tablet I want to be kinda safe about it, the thing which worries me the most is "bricking" and the fact that the warranty turns void, so I want to know how actually safe it is to root, I know there are different kinds of bricking, I already asked a guy on a youtube video and he said that it's unusual to get a nexus device bricked, expecially hard bricked, but he said that if it's hard bricked I'm kinda stuck, so is there no actual solution for some kind of bricking, please give me some advice, also this is my first post on the xda-developers forums, I was going to put links to the things I mentioned but I need to have at least 10 posts to put outside links :/.

Welcome to the forum!
Rooting is safe, as long as you don't do stupid things, if you stay responsible, nothing bad could ever happen. Responsible means Googling if you don't know something, and if something looks risky, don't do it and maybe search for an alternative.
I have rooted 8 devices, so far, never has one been bricked.
The rooting proces alone is really easy, even someone with no Android experience, like you, can do that.
But with rooting you'll have to unlock the bootloader of your device, that means all data of your Nexus will be erased, so it's good to root the Nexus 7 right after you buy it, so you'll lose no important data.
This thread will give you a toolkit for Windows, in which you can root and unlock the bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2430708 (use option 3 in the root section, everything is automatic)
Before doing anything, please read really good, and if you don't know what something means, Google it first.
With a custom recovery, you can make a full backup of the current state of your device, so if it's bricked, you can access the custom recovery and restore the backup.

Ok, thanks for the information, I was going to update the nexus to kitkat when I get it, so if I root it with kitkat I will still have the kitkat version right? I still don't think I'll root it when I get it, but this makes me feel safer about it, and when you say lose important data what do you mean? basically it will delete all the files I have on my nexus that weren't there in the first place(when I buy it) right?

When you root it, the KitKat version stays the same, don't worry.

Ok I thanked the posts, I already have my nexus 7, udpating it to kitkat right now, I will think about rooting later, I can do other stuff without it
edit: one more thing, does some of the apps that come with nexus get deleted on rooting? for example play store

No, literally nothing changes in your Nexus 7 with rooting, except for 1 extra app being added. That's it.
actually it is depends on your own
if you are going to use some apps which are needed to root then you have no choice but to root
like Titanium Backup, Greenify, Autostarts, AdAway, etc

Rooting is fine but it comes with great consequences like bad security and you can brick it, there's many things that can go wrong. But if you get thru that daunting, annoying and sometimes scary process of rooting you open a world of freedom and fun.
