another Galaxy S for ATT: Samsung Infuse - Captivate General

interesting specs
http://phandroid.com/2011/01/05/att...e-4g-with-4-5-inch-super-amoled-plus-display/

It comes with the second latest android software with an update available sometime in the next few years. Sound familiar?

It's good for Captivate owners that Samsung is producing basically another Galaxy S.

Specs are great on paper, but given the combination of nonfunctional gps, and samsung and att's refusal to release updates for my captivate, I'll be telling everyone I know to steer away of both att and samsung.

agreed.... Samsung can scratch my ass...
I should be getting my Dell Streak with froyo preloaded any day now. Giving the wife the craptivate.

all these new phones announced. forget about software updates for the old ones.

F""""" that!
im getting me the new motorola Atrix 4g with a dual core,1 GB of RAM and a HUGE 1930mAh battery .
http://pocketnow.com/android/motorola-atrix-4g-on-att-dual-core-cpu-quarter-hd-resolution

1.2 ghz ONE core? wow. we want your dual core orion, samsung.
2.2 froyo? 2.3 please. yeah upgradable to 2.3 right? how long this time?
The specs are kinda on par to Samsung Galaxy S2, so it sounds kinda real, but it has horrible specs compare to other dual core phones.

Display is Super AMOLED Plus(ugh..) which have RGB in one pixel not current pentile.
By itself, this phone can be super awesome and will silence apple fanboys.

but Samsung phones come with free gift!! Motorola does not! Samsung phones come with free gift, free fake GPS!

htc evo 4g is being released under att with a different name.

I'm trying to decide between the Motorola Atrix and the HTC Inspire. Will likely depend on what gets root'd faster.
This is a weird feeling... A choice of phone to buy? On AT&T?! [email protected]@#$

I don't see a lot of captivate users going back to buy another samsung phone.
Well at least for me, I won't.

I'm leaning toward The Atrix (Olympus), HTC still not letting go of the kickstand, lol.

The only thing I will try to pull is exchange my phone for the htc inspire when it comes out.

Why on earth would anyone pick an Evo rehash over the dual-core Moto?
Of course, my bet is that only the Samsung isn't locked down.

Certainly not a deal breaker, but I just see it first to go (broken) the way I am with phones
I hope AT&T starts rolling out these new phones soon.

Waiting for more specs like RAM and internal memory. Hope Samsung will not act miser and cripple it with less RAM.

Back to the OP, sorry..
With those rumored specs, I would say that's not really huge leap on the upgrade path.
Samsung already sold 10 million Galaxy S phones, I don't see any significant changes in there phones until numbers shows they need an upgrade. They are making so much fxxxxxx money on the "Galaxy S" line it's sick! And you think they care about the gps...

Next Phone?

The Captivate community here on XDA is nothing but awesome. So, I'm asking everyone: where are you going next? Will you be switching to Motorola and the Atrix 4G? Sticking it out with Samsung and the Infuse 4G? Maybe an Inspire 4G?
Please vote in the poll. I'm interested in seeing where Captivate owners are planning to head in the next couple of months.
PSA: Atrix 4G Pre-orders are LIVE! Only $399 off-contract with $100 discount!
I don't know because I have over a year on my contract. By that time who knows where we will be. I do think next time I get a phone it will be after its been out for a while. If it were the next couple months I think it would be the atrix.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.
Im seriously considering the atrix but the infuse looks impressive they both have awesome features...im torn.

The Atrix is going where I've wanted to be for a while. If my phone is as powerful as a laptop, why have two separate devices? I'm a bit upset about the Infuse because it's what the Galaxy S line should have been. That all being said, I'll probably cave for the Infuse because of the "flashability" and brilliant screen.

Most people would disagree about your statement on the Galaxy S supposed to have been like the Infuse. I like a 4" screen and beyond that the Infuse really does not make much of an impact. The bad thing about the Galaxy S is Samsung not releasing source code.
I have 2yrs left on my contract so by that time phones will be installed into our brains
I despise Motorola phones, so I'm not touching those.
Samsung has been reliable, I'm not sure that I'd want to deal with the Captivate's jank anymore, and I don't trust Samsung to provide updates especially if they're corrupted with TouchWiz.
I love using HTC phones and their spec sheets and feel just seem so refined.
Alas, I'll probably defect from ATT. They've thrown too much crap into my face over the past 6 years. My employer can foot for my business phone, its service is far too unreliable for me. I'm probably going to Verizon.

I am a fan of the Infuse's front facing camera, 8 mp main camera with flash and moderately improved processor. When the Captivate was released, it was competing with the Evo and Iphone 4, both of which had better specs (on paper). I worry that AT&T will cripple the Infuse as they did the Captivate and take away it's competitive features to conserve network bandwidth. Plus I'll need evidence that the GPS works on the Infuse ;-)

You get me.
I think most ppl expectation of the Atrix is too high, unless you plan on running it stock.
And for those dead set on getting it, be prepared for a big change when it comes to Motorola development section, not much happening there compared to Samsung section.
I will wait about a month or so after release before buying 2 of the units in the poll (off-contract). I've learned that having patience on buying any electronic device that is first introduce can save you alot of headaches.
Well, I don't really have a manufacturer preference and I don't buy phones as an update, ie, not locked into 2 more years so I shop around different carrier phones. Actually though I get a great ATT plan through work so I'm not leaving, still using original iPhone unlimited data plan.
That said, I got my wife the HTC HD2 and about 2 weeks ago loaded the NAND version of Cyanogen. I must say if there is a newer version of the HD2 that runs Android, and works with ATT 3g in about a year or so i will be all over it. That is actually quite an awesome phone and if it worked with ATT 3g I might actually trade her.
I'm betting MWC doesn't bring AT&T much. Perhaps the second Galaxy S, but I'm thinking it will launch in several months, like the Captivate did.
MWC - February 2010 - Announcement of Galaxy S GT-I9000
Captivate announced - late June 2010
Captivate released - July 2010
The Atrix is looking at a possible March launch. So, it'll probably be a few months ahead of the Galaxy S2.
After dealing with Samsung's lack of updates, GPS problems, shut down problems, I'm personally inclined to give Motorola a shot with the Atrix. Let's hope there is an unlocked bootloader.

Time to upgrade already??

I've had the Captivate since XMas, and now with the Motorola Atrix being released March 1st by AT&T I have to have it.....
Why? Dual core 1Gig processors, 1 gig ram, front facing camera, FM radio, gorilla glass, 4G speeds, 1950 mah battery, a real LED light, etc..... and its a Motorola.
It's going to be a better more capable phone, but also very expensive, No price set yet, but its going for 650 euros which is 950 US give or take.
The good news is that all of the purchased apps will port over to the new phone
panflute
I don't see what's so great about it... Captivate already has Gorilla Glass, AT&T's 4G is equivalent if you already have a HSUPA-enabled Captivate, and Motorola makes some of the crappiest phones that I have ever used (not since the STAR-TAC have they made a good phone in my opinion).
People should treat these phones like our PC's. You buy one now, it's outdated around 6 months or less.
Double edge sword: Yay! I bought the latest and greatest!

Just because u enable hsupa doesn't make it equivalent to the atrix 4g....technically its not really 4g...its hsupa+ which the captivate does not have.... theoretically hsupa+ can achieve 4g speeds but not regularly. I feel the atrix is going to be a far superior phone. The only thing ill miss is my super amoled. And it has motoblur which motoblows but isn't as bad as touchwhiz but im sure it wont long until it gets rooted and roms are available. Plus it ships with froyo which we still have yet to officially get

HSUPA has nothing to really do with AT&T's 4g claims, it is HSDPA(which the captivate has) versus HSDPA+. It has more to do with download speed than upload. HSUPA is all about faster uploads. That is what is enabled by using an i9000 ROM, kernel, and modem. All current Galaxy S phones have HSDPA compatible modems, both physically and in software. The Captivate just got gimped without HSUPA speeds.

I'm confused by this thread. The title is a question, but the OP is a statement on getting the Atrix. How about making a question on the Captivate or go to the thread about what your future phone will be as that is older than this thread.
To upgrade or not?
And is it really an upgrade? I think this is a valid topic here since we all got our Captivates relatively recently. Since posting I found more info on the Tecra 2 processors. There are at least 5 phones set to be released and more coming for sure. The LG looks interesting too. I hear Motorola locked the bootloader on the Atrix. It may be too early to jump into an upgrade at this very moment till more details and facts are out. Cellhut is taking preorders for at Atrix ate $449, but there is a lot of negative comments out there on their business practices so that may be ill advised.

If you would have made your OP a question then it would have made more sense. You made a statement that "I have to have it." The bootloader will eventually get cracked, that is only a matter of time once the phone comes out. If you like Moto phones which seem up in the air for build quality that is up to you. Spec wise the Atrix is an upgrade, but that doesn't mean the Captivate or other SGS phones will be less superior. You also have to want the larger screen size and the fact it isn't SAMOLED.

So what your saying is a phone coming out later is going to be better then the Captivate? I would hope it will be. Way to state the obvious bud.
But no, I will not be "upgrading" from the Captivate any time soon. The Captivate can do everything I need it to right now, and when I do upgrade to a new phone, it will be to a phone that is vastly more powerful, not just a little like the Atrix. Also I don't buy Motorola phones because they are garbage.

1. SamSux has screwed me once already with the Behold2.
2. They have shrunk the internal storage from 16GB to 1GB (Vibrant to Vibrant4G).
3. yeah their screen is bigger and looks better indoors and on cloudy days, but I live in Texas as a Trucker and we have many more Sunny days than cloudy.
4. MT4G = 756MB RAM, Vibrant/Vibrant 4G = 512MB RAM.
in short not just NO!!! but OH HELL NO!!! I don't care if SamSux but out a triple-core 5GHz processor... Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I don't do well when I am the cause of my own shame.

No more Samsung for me. Ever.
I will, however, be the first in line for the HTC Pyramid (or whatever the final product will be called).
I also would like to laugh at you for downgrading so please switch
Mytouch 4g / CM7 / Minimalist Theme
I once liked Samsung
I had a vibrant and i loved it when it came out, then as half a year passed i still didn't have 2.2 froyo, it was just ridiculous even phones like the lg optimus had 2.2, if touchwiz was delaying the release of 2.2 get rid of it, then the nexus s came out and it was running 2.3, which pissed me off even more to have a phone that is considered top of the line running outdated software. so i got rid of the vibrant, got a mytouch 4g rooted it , installed CM7 nightly build (2.3) and i get updates daily, i will never go back to samsung for anything electronic.Never.
Why would anyone want to trade what I feel is a far superior phone for something they will have nothing but problems with. The MyTouch 4G superior in every way besides the screen display. The screen IMO isn't that much better them the MyTouch 4G. I happen to have one of the good screens.
Nexus One & MyTouch 4G
Vinny
Can not put my Nexus One down.
The Vibrant 4G is just a marketing ploy for people with Vibrants with 2.2 (which it just got) to switch over to 2.3, instead of just updating the software. Don't get me wrong, the Galaxy S is a great phone. Samsung just wants to make money while not caring about the consumer.
I wouldn't do it ....I would just wait for something better like a dual core phone ......I had the vibrant before my mt4g and yeah screen was good but so many problems with lag and updates for it ......I'm super happy with my mt4g I will upgrade as soon as something better comes out but foe now mt4g is the best out there for now ......

Software is very important. Go read Engadgets review of the Optimus 2X. Best hardware on any phone out there but horrible software that can cripple the phone. Samsung's software is horrible and crippled the Vibrant.
Samsung sucks, they screwed up the behold 2 which was great hardware. They screwed up the Vibrant which was great hardware. The Vibrant 4G will suck. The only phone they make that is good is the Nexus S because its stock google software.
If you upgrade or get a good deal then I guess it's ok. But if you purchase this phone at full retail for 650 buck... you're a moron.

I hava an Atrix and a Captivate. I love both phones. He is right though, its not worth it. I would say that you should wait, hold off a few months and wait for the SGS II. AT&T has a variant coming sometime this year, and with the rollout of their LTE network starting this summer, you have to imagine that the SGS II would be a great canidate to be one of their 1st LTE enabled phones (that's personal opinion, not based on any verified info). Aside from that, the performance differences between the two phones is noticable, but not DRASTIC. Having actual, working GPS is nice, and some of the other features are cool, but honestly I would say wait.

well TBH, I don't really mind about the SoC other than the fact that its a dual and it would be significantly better than the single core that my captivate has.
and I don't live in the states, so I"m not really affected about LTE and such since we don't have LTE or anything where I live.
what I am worried about is the locked bootloader and such cause I can safetly run gingerbread on my captivate, but I won't be able to be on gingerbread once I'm on the atrix and my ROM choices and tweakign and such will be very limited until we can get the bootloader unlocked since motorola is such an ass to lock it.
I'm still debating this....with half of me saying "no" and half of me saying "yes"
does your atrix "feel faster or smoother" compared to the captivate?

Ahh, then yea all the AT&T stuff is kinda irrelevant, lol. The rom choices out there are minimal due to the bootloader encryption, obviously, but there is a HELL of a lot of working going on to fix that. Don't want to speak too soon but we may be close. Khoulk, tenfar, TBH, and a bunch of others are working on it. The Atrix is faster and smoother, yes, but we still don't even have an ETA for Gingerbread.

I would check online to see what the going rate for a used captivate is before offering it up + 100 for the Atrix. Compare that to the price for an off-contract atrix and you'll have your answer as to whether or not its a "fair" trade, value wise. Comparing the two phones to each other depends on how much you value aftermarket development. I'm a hardcore themer and that's why I kept my cappy. I haven't released anything for the Atrix yet, and I've had it almost since launch. I was able to get the Atrix through work at no cost, so it was win-win for me. Hardware wise, it is superior (except for the screen. Super Am. beats out the qhd 960x540 IMO). Development wise, there's no contest. Cappy is on Gingerbread. End of discussion. Its a trade-off either way. That's why I said wait for the SGS II to become available whereever you're at: dev friendly + hardware that is equal to or bettan than the atrix is almost every way. They're both great phones, IMO... but the SGS II is gonna be even better. And some phone that no one knows about that will be announced 2 months from now will be even better than the SGS II, lol.

going rate for the captivate is around 300~ but then the atrix goes for alot more as well........
Maybe I should just wait longer for more dual core phones.....?
Swyped from my gingerfied captivate
I definitely wouldn't do it - the Captivate just has so much more to offer with a thriving developer community. The Atrix is supposedly on the verge of being rooted, but it will likely take awhile for things to really boom (and there's no telling when the root will even be successful). I have a few friends with the Atrix, and while it looks to be a decent phone, most complain about battery life and call quality.
I'm no fanboy - I'd jump ship from the Captivate tomorrow if the price was right and hardware/software looked to be legit, but right now the Captivate feels like one of the best possible phones a regular user and geek can have.

The devs have already rooted the phone I think. They are trying to unlock the bootloader.
Don't do it OP. After messing around on an Atrix for awhile, it is a good phone but feels a little finnicky.
A captivate on GB feels a lot smoother than a stock Froyo Atrix IMO.
My opinion you would be paying for a downgrade

"finnicky"? don't get me wrong
I'm running CM7 and have tried other gingerbread ROM's on my captivate
but I kill the battery so fast and it slows to a halt once I try to multi task with browsing and stuff

why would I be paying for a downgrade?
can you describe in more detail please if you don't mind
I'm digging the front facing camera, the working GPS, and the resolution bump.
The atrix doesn't run as hot when playing games (my backplate used to burn me) or when running GPS and the battery last considerably longer.
What do you do on your phone? If you read more news and the like, the screen is great. If you watch more movies on your phone, then you might like the sammy screen better.
The fingerprint reader is nifty as well.
I am weary of samsung's gps on the infuse and the SGS II so I will steer clear..

In the end it's your decision. The only way you can really go wrong is if you went to the extremely locked down iphone. Enjoy your new atrix my friend.
don't do it! I have a captivate and I just bought an atrix for $300 and was planning on selling my captivate. But after using the atrix for a couple of days I decided to sell the atrix instead. It is just a bad user experience. Mainly because of the screen and the lack of response. Whenever I would use the slider to slide through contacts, it would lose track of my finger and call someone on accident. Also it is an eyesore to look at when you are scrolling.

Found my next phone

The g2x was my first non qwerty phone and the only reason i got it was because the g2 was a year old and priced the same as the brand new g2x so i figured id give touch screen a try and i can confirm that nothing compares to typing on a physical qwerty so i cant wait to go back. It has been confirmed that the Galaxy S Relay sports a Snapdragon S4 chip so i think i will be dropping the g2x for this.

Cool story bro

Same story for myself on the g2/g2x...I'd be really tempted to grab that phone if it had a better camera...and I'm really tempted to just suck it up and wait til the next round of cool stuff comes around (adreno 600? )
1gb ram on par with the international version of the S3, snapdragon s4 plus is the same chip as the S3, and mean while it does only have a 5mp camera, who is taking 8mp pictures? Remeber mp is jistthe physical size of the picture doesnt mean its better quality.
1G Ram
I want a quadcore with 2g ram and hdmi/charge capability before I switch phones.

Hey lemme know how that goes, I kind of really want my girlfriend to have the Relay sometime.
She's got a Gravity Smart at the moment... and while it's OK... well it's not. It's garbage. D:
Check out the Optimus G, much better choice (once it gets released)

I think that's going to be my next phone. I love a physical keyboard.
Woooo jumping ship too!
Just got a Gnex. Let's all shun LG together. Can't be happier to get rid of this POS. Good hardware, horrible horrible software and assistance from LG. Shame on them, really.

How's the Gnex? I'm due for an upgrade since last month but still not sure which one to get, Gnex or galaxyS2. Galaxy s3 is a bit big for me though. Heard that the s2 will get the JB in Nov ... but still can't find the source.

If you aren't going for the s3, don't bother with the s2 or gnex at this stage. Wait for the next nexus phone, its due out very soon.

With regards to the performance, it's amazing. This phone will easily last me 2 years, maybe 3 if I don't drop it as much as I dropped my g2x.
The good thing is I'll never really have to worry too much about OS updates, that was a key purchasing factor.
I think right now is a great time to buy a Gnex if you aren't filthy rich, like me, because a bunch of people are cashing out for the iPhone 5; why not take advantage of them? You've got 3 days left!
As per waiting for the new nexus, if you're not buying the phone outright anyways, I guess you may as well wait, but I was purchasing the phone outright so I got a pretty good deal. Headphones had never been opened, phone was in a case since day 1, ghost armor screen protection, and nice casemate and leather case for $400. Still trying to sell my g2x locally for $200-250, makes this upgrade a lot more affordable.
Like I said though, if you're not buying it outright there's probably a new nexus coming out before december, I just thought I'd take advantage of the guy who's selling in prep for iPhone 5.
That's my 2Cents!
