Next Phone? - Captivate General

The Captivate community here on XDA is nothing but awesome. So, I'm asking everyone: where are you going next? Will you be switching to Motorola and the Atrix 4G? Sticking it out with Samsung and the Infuse 4G? Maybe an Inspire 4G?
Please vote in the poll. I'm interested in seeing where Captivate owners are planning to head in the next couple of months.
PSA: Atrix 4G Pre-orders are LIVE! Only $399 off-contract with $100 discount!

I don't know because I have over a year on my contract. By that time who knows where we will be. I do think next time I get a phone it will be after its been out for a while. If it were the next couple months I think it would be the atrix.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.

Im seriously considering the atrix but the infuse looks impressive they both have awesome features...im torn.

The infuse is nothing more than an overclocked captivate with a 4.5" screen, its nothing new. The atrix on the other hand has a dual core cpu, 1g of ram, fingerprint reader and that nifty webtop thingamajiggy.

The only thing drawing me to the Infuse is that screen. But the qHD screen on the Atrix should be cool, too.

The Atrix is going where I've wanted to be for a while. If my phone is as powerful as a laptop, why have two separate devices? I'm a bit upset about the Infuse because it's what the Galaxy S line should have been. That all being said, I'll probably cave for the Infuse because of the "flashability" and brilliant screen.

Most people would disagree about your statement on the Galaxy S supposed to have been like the Infuse. I like a 4" screen and beyond that the Infuse really does not make much of an impact. The bad thing about the Galaxy S is Samsung not releasing source code.

I have 2yrs left on my contract so by that time phones will be installed into our brains

I despise Motorola phones, so I'm not touching those.
Samsung has been reliable, I'm not sure that I'd want to deal with the Captivate's jank anymore, and I don't trust Samsung to provide updates especially if they're corrupted with TouchWiz.
I love using HTC phones and their spec sheets and feel just seem so refined.
Alas, I'll probably defect from ATT. They've thrown too much crap into my face over the past 6 years. My employer can foot for my business phone, its service is far too unreliable for me. I'm probably going to Verizon.

You should have made the choice "Stuck with the Captivate" instead of "Sticking..."

I am a fan of the Infuse's front facing camera, 8 mp main camera with flash and moderately improved processor. When the Captivate was released, it was competing with the Evo and Iphone 4, both of which had better specs (on paper). I worry that AT&T will cripple the Infuse as they did the Captivate and take away it's competitive features to conserve network bandwidth. Plus I'll need evidence that the GPS works on the Infuse ;-)

I was wondering when this thread would pop up... I'm digging the atrix's raw power... but really we should all reserve judgement until MWC has passed. I'm sure there's more stuff that'll blow us away there

You get me.

I think most ppl expectation of the Atrix is too high, unless you plan on running it stock.
And for those dead set on getting it, be prepared for a big change when it comes to Motorola development section, not much happening there compared to Samsung section.
I will wait about a month or so after release before buying 2 of the units in the poll (off-contract). I've learned that having patience on buying any electronic device that is first introduce can save you alot of headaches.

Well, I don't really have a manufacturer preference and I don't buy phones as an update, ie, not locked into 2 more years so I shop around different carrier phones. Actually though I get a great ATT plan through work so I'm not leaving, still using original iPhone unlimited data plan.
That said, I got my wife the HTC HD2 and about 2 weeks ago loaded the NAND version of Cyanogen. I must say if there is a newer version of the HD2 that runs Android, and works with ATT 3g in about a year or so i will be all over it. That is actually quite an awesome phone and if it worked with ATT 3g I might actually trade her.

I'm betting MWC doesn't bring AT&T much. Perhaps the second Galaxy S, but I'm thinking it will launch in several months, like the Captivate did.
MWC - February 2010 - Announcement of Galaxy S GT-I9000
Captivate announced - late June 2010
Captivate released - July 2010
The Atrix is looking at a possible March launch. So, it'll probably be a few months ahead of the Galaxy S2.
After dealing with Samsung's lack of updates, GPS problems, shut down problems, I'm personally inclined to give Motorola a shot with the Atrix. Let's hope there is an unlocked bootloader.

I think with the Samsung Attain coming to AT&T pretty soon, as well as the iPhone 5 dropping in another 3-4 months (as per oft-repeated rumours) , ppl are holding out on buying this gem. I know a few captivate owners who're happy with their phones, and most ppl on iPhone 3g/3gs are waiting for the 5.
For me, the 4.5 inch screen, good battery life and sleekness of the device were an easy sell to ditch my iPhone 4 and get this. But I haven't seen many ppl with the Infuse at work, or when I'm wandering around in the city or on public transportation.
I think this may very well be the best time to get the Infuse. Mine is on its way from AMZ where it's priced the same as the local Costco ($129) which is incidently the lowest I've paid for a phone in years.
I contemplated waiting to see what Jobs have to offer this week at their conference as well as whether ATT will bring in the Infuse older bro. But at what cost and whether it would make a difference in my usage?
Now if only the stars line up in that (a) ATT won't prevent me from grandfathering in my unlimited data plan (esp since I did not upgrade in their store) and (b) the rooted or not Infuse allows me to do what I'm used to doing with my IP4 (tethering, Outlook sync, notes, CNBC streaming quotes, Stanza, A2DP e.g.) I'm good to go.

We have to think about the upgrade plans. I have both the Cappy and the Infuse just because my girlfriend changed her plan I was able to get it. Else, I think I would just wait for the Attain, but who cares, hopefully this time next year, quad core phones come out!.....
But loving every peace of the infuse than cappy. Wayyy better battery life, screen I think is about the same, camera, sleekness, and build quality I think is better than the cappy though...

The screen is certainly not the same as Captivate. The 4.5" screen is by far the best feature of the phone and the main reason I upgraded to it from the Captivate's 4".
I decided against the SGS II on this upgrade because of issues with headphone sound not being that great and a 4.3" screen ( I wanted a big screen upgrade from Captivate 4").
Apparently, Samsung decided to change the sound hardware in the SGS II and a reason why we will not see Voodoo Sound on it. Also, I see no reason for a dual core phone right now (at least for me) as there are no real apps that take advantage of it yet. In addition, Samsung will be releasing SGS III early next year.
Yeah I hear they're selling really well....but I haven't seen one around. The only one I've seen is the one my GF just got. I'm thinking about it myself.

[Q] How long will the Infuse 4G hold up?

How long do you guys think the Infuse 4G will last in the Market of ever improving phones? Will it last the next few years, say until an upgrade is eligible? Or will it simply fall apart compared to upcoming phones in the next few years? Personally, I love my Infuse, and I think it'll last at least a year to three in terms of specs and software. Please, discuss.
Ok, this is one thing you need to learn when it comes to new phones / laptops/ technology in general. In a year, IT WILL BE OUTDATED. I got the Samsung Captivate and could not imagine a better phone ---besides it's constant GPS issues and until the charging port broke on it...but that was partly my fault. I got this phone and it is great as well--even better than the Captivate. At the time, I did not think that was possible.
The thing you want to do is buy a quality product for the time. The Infuse is one of those things. If you take good care of it, it will last you. I fell off of my bike a few weeks back going downhill. I was pretty banged up. My Infuse, even though it was in a case, got pretty banged up--- cosmetically around those silver edges. It is fully functioning otherwise. It is a solid product. It will last you a long time if you don't abuse it.
For example -- -I still have the Samsung Blackjack 2 as my backup phone and I use it when my "newer and better" phones give me problems. I've had it for forever. It is still a good phone despite being years old. You have a decent phone now--- we all do, as far as the Infuse is concerned. I haven't heard too many complaints, but only time can tell if that will change. Treat it well and it will remain good to you.
The sg2 looks identical to the infuse(slightly smaller on at&t) , except with a better resolution and much better cpu, so I think the infuse will be obsolete when the sg2 hits the states. Nevertheless, I love my infuse and I think it's one of the best phones out right now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I'm just asking if you guys think it'll last the above-average Android user the next few years. I know it's already outdated. It was probably outdated before it even came out.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
depends on the user. there isnt much the phone can't do but it depends on samsung releasing updates and on the community to put out quality mods. to be honest with a good rom a droid could still be a viable phone. my friend has a nexus1 and loves it. i actually kinda envy it, i love the screen and media capabilities on samsung phones but as a phone the nexus is perfect and there is no reason it should need to be anything more.
i have a phone lust though. i will likely get the sgsiii or whatever comes after the sgsii long before my contract is up.
The Infuse right now is still the absolute best phone on AT&T.
And will stay that way till the SGS 2 comes out....

Sgs2 and infuse have the same resolution. 480x800 wvga.
I was looking at the specs of Galaxy II and the one thing I won't switch my infuse for is battery. It has 1600mA while Infuse has 1750mA. So when it comes to dual CPU, it should drain battery down pretty bad. I mean why will you ever even use that power on the phone unless you compute rocket science data using it. 4G also has a big mouth for drinking the juice out of your phone.
I'm not trying to say it is horible, it just would be a major concern if I'm a heavy data user.

It is confirmed the nexus S will get the ics update, hardware wise there's no reason the infused couldn't handle the update also. It's up to att and Sammy.

I am not saying it couldnt handle it, just saying that after the first OS update I would not look for any others. IF it gets 1 more after that then it will be lucky. As for the Nexus S, I had great hopes for it but then I found the Nexus S was by samsung and thought ok ill wait for the next and not the new prime may be a samsung as well so looks like ill wait till the next nexus is an HTC. But if it is a samsung or HTC as long as the phone is bought through ATT dont expect to get the same number of updates as the Euro versions of the same phone. They always will get more updates then its US counter parts. As always been the case and always will be.
This is why the nexus line is a safe bet typically, as it is 'googles' phone, the updates are fast and frequent. The S is a Sammy, but no need to wait on them making the updates play nice with tw .

Just a tribute to the Captivate...

I can't believe I'm not in a hurry to jump ship to the Galaxy S2. The Cappy has been such a good experience as a phone and it's still able to do whatever I need it to do. When the Fuze came out I couldn't help but be there the first day to pick one up. I was compelled to have the latest and greatest, and the abilities a new smartphone would allow. The same happened the release day of the Captivate.
Sure, it's had its issues (GPS and capped data speeds come to mind) but between the performance of hardware and the constant ROM updates from the dev community, I just don't feel that compulsion to move on from the Captivate. For me it's been a great phone and it's made me a big fan of Samsung's products. Oh I'll get a Galaxy S2 here in a month or two when the price comes down a bit. But I'm still happy with my Captivate and I'll keep it around as a backup.
ditto
i will likely wait until december unless the deal is too good to pass up.
Want to see what develops with the nexus prime.
Some info claims it will be a Verizon Exclusive but i am skeptical. I think that it is more likely we will see it launch exclusively on verizon with a 30-60 window before other carriers get it....so i am not giving up on the prime....the solid metal body construction alone will be worth the wait...just hope ATT gets it.

I don't feel the need to upgrade from my Captivate either. Its a weird feeling, I use to be such a phone whore, now I look at new phones and feel they can't do a whole lot for me (personally, I know the phones are actually huge upgrades) that my Captivate can't do.
I HATE how ALL of the new phones being announced are so huge! 4.3" isn't TOO bad, but I do prefer my 4" screen. They're just getting bigger too, I want the Nexus Prime so badly, but there's no way I'm getting it with a 4.65" screen. My upgrade isn't until May 2012 and I'm questioning if there will even be a phone out there I like by then.

The article says 4.6". It may not be so bad since that probably includes the buttons at the bottom, I'll just have to see it in person, but I still think it will be a very large device.
I'm a captivate owner and I really love it. I will not change it in a while..
The only two things that I don't really like in Captivate are very bad sensitive buttons (well, I replaced screen after it was broken, and than buttons were like that) and very bad battery life, especially with MIUI
But speed and functionality are just grear. And still love the screen with maximum brightness. I think I will buy Galaxy Note or Nexus Prime, will see...
I'm with you guys, but not by choice. I have a contract to fulfil.

I'll also be waiting for the Note.
I just looked up the Galaxy Note. Wow...! That thing looks amazing. It might be just a bit too big but I'm really considering jumping on that.
I'm with you guys. There is no real reason to upgrade just yet. With a good custom ROM (Cog5), it does everything I ask of it, and does it quickly. The screen is just amazing, and only the SAMOLED Plus beats it, if you ask me. Since I'm not on contract, I can switch when I want, but I see nothing out there I just gotta have. The Prime may change that, but if it is CDMA, then I'm out. Big Red is too expensive for my blood.

Looking forward to it. Although my S2 is pretty bad ass. Hard to imagine how much better it will get.
Powered by the SGSII....
Looks like most of the phone is the display, no haptic keys. Any rumors on the physical dimensions of the phone. From the image, i'd guess it's a little less than 5" diagonal. So, perhaps it's just slightly bigger physically than the S2. I'm hoping for at least 720p resolution on this bad boy lol.
this is dumb as all hell. why dont we just go buy an iphone with one button besides the volume, camera and power buttons. im all for new phones but im not getting sold into the hype of every damn phone coming out. how is it people get suckered into 2 year contract just for a "newer better" phone to be released in the next three months. c'mon people grow a damn brain. im pretty sure thats why alot of devs are still on the htc sensation because its still about half a year old.
IMO Samsung is the only smart phone manufacture whose flagship is worth 2 year contract, with their hardware staying to current performance standards for about 1.5 years after release. Saying from my vibrant experience and seeing what is happening with GS2 (not the US LTE versions that came out late with different hardware). Also Samsung has a clear strategy with their flagship unlike HTC, LG, Motorola etc who bring out so many flagships in quick succession, they don't know what they are doing. Now if SG3 is released with penta band support i would pick up the international version and stay on t-mobile without extending contract.

The original SGS Vibrant came out 8 months or more before the 4G so yes, Samsung Android phones do stay "current" for the next 1.5 years stated.
The dual-core processor is limited to very few phones so a 1 Ghz with a GPU phone processor from almost 2 years ago is incredible.
When T-Mobile released the SGS4G, it was primarily because the Vibrant and all other Galaxy S variants were so successful. Samsung and T-Mobile wanted to milk the franchise before the S2 was released.
4.8 does seem HUGE coming from another phone, but it's kinda like coming from the Vibrant to this phone. At first it seems collosal but easy to get used to. I haven't seen the Note in person but honestly it looks monstrous in the commercial. Not sure I'd wanna go any bigger than the S2.

I'm definitely buying it , I got to get outta this dev community on this version of this phone , don't get me wrong I love the phone but the development sucks and its too childish in here and that's why I mainly stay away, hopefully with a different phone it will be better or at least the forum community will hopefully be better
Meh... I'm not upgrading until T-Mo comes out with the Note or something comparable. 4.8 inches isn't big enough for me to consider it an upgrade. 5.3 or bust, IMO.

Well the note has cwm now as of today and we have people flashing the tmobile radios to see if it works with 4G. If it does im ditching my nexus for one until the SGS3 comes.

A 4.8" screen with near zero bezel would be near perfect. Though the phone I really want is the HTC Zeta (if it ever gets made).

I'll definitely buy it no questions asked. I just have to get a dev one so I can get updates.
Anything bigger than our SII's seems too large for me. Everything is perfect about my SII including the size.

Did samsung release the original SGS2 before the ipjone 4s was released?

The Samsung Infuse is no longer for sale.

I brought up the thread for ICS which was a happy thing, but this is a sad topic. According to the att website, it is no longer available. It was on sale for a year, and it was one of ATT's biggest selling phone for a long time. It is now retired What are your thoughts on this? Btw heres the link to prove: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/cellphones.html
the infuse was out of production within about 3 months of release. any infuses sold after that were either overstock or refurb. this is no new news. no surprise. it's a nice phone with nice cameras and a big readable screen but it was the last single core flagship phone and was released after dualcores were common. it's out of date and less powerful than many second rate phones on the market today in processing power.
i dont think a better phone is necessary, but the hardware profile combined with the samsung firmware keeps rom ports from ever being viable without sacrifices. as much as i have loved the phone it's about to be time for something new.
I completely agree with Dani, when i purchased my infuse i knew it was second string with the galaxy s 2 already out. I was on a tight budget and it was the best option and im not surprised it is no longer for sale especially with the s3 coming very soon!
This is saddening but understandable news. I bought my Infuse back in November 2011, non-contract for $485 after taxes at my local AT&T store, the sales rep actually brought me out a Galaxy S II at first and asked me if I wanted that instead.
I paused for a moment and told him I did my research on both phones and told him I preferred the Infuse's specs. Was satisfied with the RAM, the single core, and impressed that it had better battery life; not to mention it was a good $100 cheaper. I was coming from the Motorola Backflip and just couldn't take the constant slow downs and limited internal storage any longer, and a bigger screen was what I needed.
Fast forward a few months, and here we are coming up on the stateside release of the Galaxy S III and ya know what, I'm still Infuse strong. Samsung did a better job on this phone than they realized. I'm not likely to get an S III because I'm still satisfied with this phone, even with my upgrade available in August. Don't get me wrong, the S III is an impressive phone in its own right, but now that we have ICS, I see no reason to jump ship, mine is sailing smoothly

The Infuse has never failed me and I have had mine since release. ALOT of people ask me if its a S2 and I say yes lol ... still runs everything I need very smoothly and I'm on stock 2.3

+1 on the not jumping ship part.
I dumped an Atrix for the Infuse and couldn't be happier. Faster boot, bigger screen and it performs better, running non rooted one-click 2.3.6.
I would be satisfied with one more "patch" update to fix the few bugs left in GB ... although I made my infuse a 100 times better last week by switching to straightalk lol

Sticking with Infuse but waiting on GOOG
With GOOG's announcement of a line of GNex devices this year I'm waiting on their offerings before giving up my Infuse to the kids.
The GSIII is impressive and so is the OneX. But the Infuse is a good phone for the money
I'd recommend the Ebay markets to get good deals if you're asked for a good non-contract smartphone.
Ohh on an off topic note. I tried to copy a home vid to my Mom-InLaw's new iP 4s and I couldn't. Even with iTunes and imported the video, I couldn't just copy it to the phone.
Android rocks, pure and simple.
Yeah... I am actually thinking about moving on to the S3. I love ICS. I have 2 infuses actually in the house. One is my gf's and one is mine. She doesn't need bluetooth, so I loaded hers up with Legend 2 with Apex and its AWESOME...
Now I look at mine on GB, I am like.... man.... I really like ICS in terms of speed and features. Its got some nice stuff....
So yeah, Infuse ICS w/o bluetooth really makes me sad...... So probably SGS3 coming my way.

Try using Holo Launcher, it is a near perfect copy of the stock ICS launcher. Makes me wonder why I need ICS when GB already runs smooth as butter.

Where's the race?
I use Go, and their last update introduced the ics animations for the app drawer. If all you are looking for is the feel and look, there are plenty of options via gingerbread. None really being the "winner" as with most things...its about personal preference.

Amazonwireless show they are still available...$99.00 for a family plan update or .01 for an individual account upgrade.

Stop... Please stop.
There's absolutely NO REASON to buy an Infuse when the SGS2 i777 has been going on sale for $9.99 new directly AT&T.
If you qualify for a subsidized upgrade and don't mind being stuck in another two year contract do yourself a favor and get a SGS3, SGS2, or SGS2 Skyrocket.
This phone is dead to Samsung. There will be no further updates. While the devs here are doing great work, the most stable ROMs are derived from official releases or leaks from Samsung.
My Infuse was a great phone but it's been relegated to being a backup phone/MP3 player.

I wasn't advocating that anyone purchase this phone. This thread was titled "Infuse No Longer Available".....I was stating that yes they are still available.
I got my Infuse earlier this year, just wanting to get rid of my iPhone. Android is better on any and every occasion. Now I just wish that I had got the GS2 or saved up for the note...
