Hey guys, I just wanted to share a simlple mod that I did with my gtablet this afternoon. It bothered me for quite some time that the home keys to the side of thescreen were not backlit. I have modified mine so that the keys themselves are not lit, but rather boxes next to them are. I only had two surface mount LED's to start this project, but with the success I've had I am going to order 2 more for the remaining 2 buttons. Have a look, If there is interest, I can take more pictures and maybe write up a walk through.
EDIT- I opted to stick with the original 2 leds as electronic goldmine didn't stock blue led's anymore. links to other colors are below
After removing the front case I noticed that the black border was just painted on the backside of the case, I used an exacto knife to scrape away 4 rectangular areas next to each one of the buttons which were now visible from both sides.
I used 30ga. magnet wire from radio shack to soldered both of the LED's that I would be mounting inside. I noticed on the backside of the metallic battery holding tray that there was a recessed channel the LED's could be tucked into and wired without interfering with any existing wires.
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036277
I powered them by tapping into the USB ports power of 5v. In the finished picture you can see that they are well lit, but I need 2 more LED's for the remaining 2 buttons.
Overall this was a pretty simple project, and I am waiting on the LED's I've ordered to finish her up. I'm sorry for not posting more pictures, but I wasn't sure how this would turn out and did not take many while I was modding it.
The led lights follow the power scheme of the USB port. this means that anytime the tablet is powered on, or in sleep mode they will be lit. I like it that way because it's easy to tell if i've accidentally left it powered on.
I have just started uploading the pictures detailing how I have modded my gtab. below is a link to the Led's I used in this process. it looks as though they now only carry green and yellow.

please use t3h_g3n3r4l's hardware breakdown and disassembly guide to get your gtablet open.

To save space, I am going to skip the soldering process, and concentrate more on the led placement and power connecting points I used in my mod.
The photo's start in post 26.
This looks really good...
I would definitely like a few more pics though
I did the same thing but without the hard work.
A simple drop of krazy glue, let it dry over night and I have a nice round button to show where each button is.
Wow! This is amazing. Nice work. Please keep us posted and feel free to do a full diy if u'd like. I'm sure several of us would like to try this. I personally would love to as I've recently torn apart my vibrant to add a front facing camera.
Again, thanks!

walk through!!!
Yea......I too would love to get a detailed walkthrough with maybe some more pics!!!!!
This is a double rainbow thing.
Nice work!!
I love it! Why did you go with illumination next to, as opposed to under, the buttons? Capacitive soft button HW in the way? If the LEDs are angled towards the soft buttons could enough light leak through the button itself or is the HW interface there basically mated to the plastic?

I also wonder the same.
Say can u do a DIY guide for this?? I would love to do this!!!! A step by ste with pics would be fantastic!!!!! Also were did u get the leds from? I m gonna start getting supplies so when there is a write up i m ready to go

nice work! but i'd like to disable those keys because they are easy to hit by accident while i doing something else.
Nice work! How bout a step by step walk through so we can do this too?

Out of curiosity did you try putting the LEDS behind the actual buttons themselves or is there wiring there? I only as because i would think the light would come through the white paint better than black paint.
Also has anyone thought of using electro-luminescence film? This is similar what they used to make the tron outfits and is paper thin to boot you could span the buttons with a small strip and light them all and it can be cut in to shapes as well as long as the one power connection is still in tack.
Just a thought.
how did you deal with the sleep function. Ideally you would want the LEDs to turn off after you turn the G-tab to sleep.

VERY good point!!!!
That is a good point. When I put the tablet to sleep, it would still wake up from a USB connected keyboard and it would continue to charge my phone / Syma S107 (mini helicopter).

Download ButtonRemapper from the market (I think it costs a buck), and set any references to Search, Home, Menu or Back to "Focus". Use Button Savior to add a little pull out drawer with the softkeys on screen.
I am going to poke around in the school supplies/office suplise of office depot/staples/target and see if i can find some small little textured stickers for just this purpose...probably the cheapest and easiest fix of all.
I do have one or those fiberoptic usb lights from years ago....seems like it would just be in the way though having that thing stuck on the side of the tab. Possibly one of those clip on book led book ligths from a book store???
just ideas....

I usually use the black phone and ended up using the white one for a phone call to tech support about the black phone. I noticed the unlock buttons had a very different feel. The black phones button protrudes visually and is easier to push while the white phones is flush with the top and is harder to push. I have attached an image so you can see.
I would be interested to see whether others buttons look the same and how the the remaining 2 colors stack up.

That's wild... I can't take a pic of my phone with my phone but maybe I'll upload something for you later tonight.
My red MT4G's lock button is much like the black you posted in your picture - portrudes slightly and is pretty easy to find and push without looking
Maybe the white one has a defect?
I found it was the opposite for me. I have the white one and it protrudes, clicks, and is easily pushed. When I used the black one it was the opposite.
damn i thought i was the only one that noticed this lol. i had the white one since the phone came out and 2 weeks later i replaced it with the black one. the white one was a pain in the butt to press but the black ones button sticks out more and is very easy to push. i even had the problem when i texted in landscape mode i would turn off my phone all the time with the black one. i guess the palm of my hand always pushed the power button when texting, well i was texting fast the shut off or restart mode thing always popped up and i always hit restart or power lol.
Yeah, I have that issue sometimes when I push the black phones lock button unwillingly. Funny tradeoff.
My white one is flush, but easy to find and push.
I'll check the wife's purple tonight
Hmm, you probably are just used to it. I use the black one so I found the white one weird to use.
The power button on my red one sticks up a bit too, which caused me to have the issue of hitting it when texting in landscape mode as well. I solved that problem by switching to landscape mode the other way. So that the power button is actually by my right hand. It seems I don't push it with my forefinger on that hand when I'm texting. It was a bit awkward at first to remember the control buttons were switched to the other side, and when I went to flip it back to portrait mode I had it upside down the first few times, but I got used to that too.... Glad I'm not hitting the power button anymore though. Lol
my white one is also flush, i like it though. i havent had the chance to play with any of the other colors but id imagine its similar to my slides top button (raised)
My red one is flush.
I first had a black one and it stuck out quite a bit. A couple days later I exchanged it for a white one (liked white better later and I had creaky buttons) and the button on that one is almost flush.
Another quick pondering: The MT4G has two "different" manufacturing points (so far): China and Taiwan. I wonder if we can correlate the different button quality with manufacturing point.
Mine is slightly raised (Red) and was built in China

How do you tell where it was built?
Here are my pics. Made in Taiwan.
The manufacturing point is underneath the battery, with the FCC info

That reminds me...
How the hell do you get off the battery cover without ripping your thumbnail halfway off? I mean, I love that HTC built this thing so solid and tight, that's why I bought it, but ouch!
Oh yeah, Taiwan.
Maybe I have tough nails but I don't have any issues pulling the cover off
It's pretty strong I'll give it that, but not anything that strikes me as "hard"

Oh and yes...I think I have finally found a new sub-forum now so...HEY EVERYONE MY NAME IS REDRAZR7791
The battery cover is all about the angle. Here is a photo of what works well for me. Hold the phone firmly in one hand and approach like this applying slight pressure to the top of the battery cover. Works with manly short cut fingernails without any damage to the fingernail.
Made in Taiwan, white and ever so slightly raised. Prefect IMO actually
Hi. My HTC Inspire had a cracked screen so I bought a digitizer replacement, and the disassemble/install/reassemble seemed to go ok. But after doing so I turn on the phone, it makes the little vibrate as it starts and then the screen comes on but as a low glow and doesn't go past that. Don't know if the phone is booting all the way or not, just see the glowing screen.
Did I screw something up or is there something I can do to get past that?
I've done a soft boot, the battery was removed for an hour while I was replacing the screen, the SIM card is firmly set, etc.
Thanks for any help!
Well, the phone was sitting here "on" (still only with light glow) and I heard text messages coming over and the little green light is now flashing so the phone is up and running apparently, the screen just isn't showing. But it's has the light glow, is it possible the new screen isn't all the way set in place even though it has the "glow"?
Thanks!

Sounds like the screen is getting power but one of the wires is not put back completely. Made be you reversed the wires when you reattached them
Thanks a bunch for the reply. When attaching the glass to the LDC there's the little thin ribbon that inserts into the little white plastic clip, and then the wider ribbon part that slides up the side slot and snaps into place on the other side. Besides those two, would there be other wires I should look at? Those two look nice and secure.
Thanks again!

I have not taken mine apart yet but I walked a buddy threw it over the phone. Are you sure the cables are plugged into the right connectors? I think he also mention 2 plug in plugs that needed to be attached as well. What I would personally do. Is take it back apart and make sure everything is cool. Making sure the ribbons are not pinched or messed up and making sure all connectors are connected firmly.
Yes everything is plugged into the correct place, actually only fit in specific areas. I've just finished taken the phone apart for the 5th time and the ribbons are all flat, not kinks, seated fully, etc. I'm starting to wonder if the screen I got is faulty. I'll keep piddling with it.
Thanks.
I just bought a used Inspire without a volume button. I can easily "push" up and down by simply using a pair of tweezers. But I really hate to carry tweezers around with me, and I want to fix the problem.
Before I order a new volume button, I was hoping someone might be able to shed some light, based on the attached picture. Basically, I need to know if the "feet" on the replacement volume button are conductors that act as a jumper, or if they apply pressure to some additional conductor I might also be missing.
From the pictures I've seen of the replacement volume buttons, it looks like the "feet" are made of black plastic. I just hope I'm wrong, and it's some sort of metal conductor (thus making the repair simple).
Help is much appreciated!

Try using a toothpick or plastic fork to test your question...
EDIT: Dont know if i need to but the reason for the test is the use of a non-conductive surface... If the volume works with said media, then the "feet" are gonna be rigid plastic...

I am Jack's sudden embarrassment.
What look like metal contacts are not at all. They are simply buttons. All the conducting is done beneath what's seen in the picture. The two end "holes" in the picture do nothing but secure the button. I was able to simply push on the either of the inner "holes" (buttons) with a toothpick to change the volume up/down. I guess the tweezers weren't doing anything special after all.
So now all I need is the replacement volume button. Great news.
Thanks for helping me see outside the box on this one!
My inspire 4g has lose the volum button. How to fix it? Need to open
So there is this thin plastic-ish strip on top of the button ic but under the physical button, just open your back cover and you'll have an idea of what i am talking about, it has this black center and is goldenish color the rest.
So, I was opening the cover and that 'thing' from the power button and volume + button fell off, I didnt pay much attention, but now those 2 buttons wont work on there own, still I can get them to work by opening the cover and using something pointed, so as far as the IC or the chip or whatever it is, is still fine.
I need some suggestions on some makeshift ideas on how to fix it so the buttons will work with the cover on. Also if possible, anybody know if the mobile guys fix it and how much it costs? Dont worry about where you live, I just want to have a rough idea I dont like walking in to a mobile mall and feeling all dumb
Thanks in advance, and the other thanks you'll all receive anyway for helping

Well, you can easily fix it yourself if you are a bit smart. Just try to stick a box shaped paper tape at that place where the plastic broke off from.
Cut tape in a small rectangle. Then cut that rectangle into many small pieces of same size and form a small rectangle. Then stick them to the place where "that thing" came off.
You can also use a double end sticky tape but usually the thickness is defined so I am not sure if that will help.
HTC Sensation is an old phone however, you should easily find old bodies/ new cases to replace your current body.
Good Luck
Thanks my explorer had a similar problem Its original back cover's buttons worn off, so I folded up a piece of paper and stuck it there and used a cover over the worn out back case. With sensation there is no way to make the paper stay in the same place, i didnt think of paper tape or double sided tape, will give it a shot.
I saw the image attached on eBay and instantly wanted that on my Photon Q keyboard. It looks awesome. This modification does require taking apart your phone and getting down the keyboard back light, for an in depth tutorial on completely disassembling your Photon Q, take a peep at this repairs universe video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_JlhF600XU
Now this is a super simple modification that doesn't require soldering or any cutting of plastic like all the other awesome modifications for the Photon Q, and this can probably be done with other keyboard back light phones as well, I don't see why not. Even I could do this, it is that simple.
So here are the instructions:
1. Power off your Photon Q (or don't, be wild)
2. Pry off the back cover, if you have a sim slot installed you might need to remove the sim, and you will most likely need to pop out the micro sd card.
3. Unscrew all the bolts that hold down the plastic ring on top of the circuit board. A lot of people recommend disconnecting the camera, meh.
4. Disconnect battery
5. Make sure your bolts are organized, and count them. I say this because I lost a small and thankfully unimportant one
6. Jiggle the circuit board out of place, and BE GENTLE! open it out like a book, and take care that you don't tear the flex cable connecting the display to the keyboard/motherboard. These components can tear like a leaf, just ask my old Xoom volume flex cable (which I can't find anywhere if you can find a Motorola Xoom volume key ribbon cable anywhere tell me please)
7. See that white rectangle with all the bumps? that is the back light for your keys! (not the one with all the boxes, the one with the circular bumps that click!)
8. Now you get to do whatever you want! Do rainbows, do a solid color of choice, if you have tape and markers you can do some cool ****. The person on eBay said it was just colored tape, I didn't have colored tape so I did the following to achieve my rainbow keyboard keys:
- Put down one layer of scotch tape on the backlight
- Use sharpies to color in a rainbow, ROY-G-BIV amiright fella's?
- Put another layer of Scotch tape on top to keep the ink from leaving marks on the top film (the one with all the rectangular key cutouts)
- Closed it all up and screwed everything in place
- Boot up the phone and voila, fabulous keyboard keys that will surely make friends question my sexuality!
I have attached 3 pictures, the image of the eBay listings keyboard keys (they are much brighter since LineageOS / android puts the keys at the highest possible brightness by default), and two pictures of my keys. They are dimmer because my Nexus 7 camera is meh and Sailfish OS by default doesn't put them at the highest value. Couple that with my bathroom being the darkest room in the house and it being noon, and it comes out to some not so good pictures. Take my word for it, it looks better in real life. This is to just give an idea of what it looks like for others. Also if you are concerned about the keys not looking as bright, that isn't really a big concern. Yeah, obviously pure white is going to look brighter than red or blue for obvious reasons, but all in all its about the same brightness, and in the dark (which is when you are actually using said keys), they are more than usable and some great eye candy -- even at Sailfish OS's lower default key brightness.

So do you think I could just disassemble it and use markers to color the keyboard backlight? I am not worried about the markers rubbing off... since its underneath the keys.
