Hello,
I apologize if there is a direct answer, I tried to search but didn't find what I was looking for.
If I load an alternate ROM and later choose to go back to "stock" what file do I use? I'm assuming it's the same basic instructions you use with clockwork but I wasn't sure what you use to restore.
Am I right to assume you use the same routine you'd use to install an alternate rom, to re-install the stock rom? If that's the case, what file do you use to restore the stock configuration?
I really love this tablet and my wife and daughter keep grabbing my gtab over their laptops. I'm just looking to get the most of out this great little device, sorry if I'm being dense and I missed it in another thread.
Neudle.
Download this and hang on to it. It is the stock 3389 update that Viewsonic just recently put out. It can be installed as is from clockwork. Or you can rename it to update.zip and use it with a recovery folder if you don't use clockwork. It will get you back to stock..

So i am running cm6 currently on phone. I seem to recall erasing the stock rom when installing another program on the phone as this is what it asked me to do (can't remember which program). Anyways I have downloaded at least 5 other roms I wanted to check out and everytime I tried to load one it says E:/ bad and something about the directory. I can run cm6 with no problem and it always lets me restore into my nandroids. Anything I can do. I was trying to go with a stock, rooted rom to run sprint football live but can't get anyhting to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.
What recovery are u using? try updating to 1.7.
Sounds as if you may be using Clockwork, try flasing a different recovery. I use Godspeed and it cuts down the time and never lets me down. Here is a link to the image as well as abd instructions on how to install it on your Hero.

yeah thats a great idea, use godspeed or open rom manager app and scroll all the way to the bottom then choose flash alternate recover and flash 1.6.2 recovery. and when u download new roms to flash, after u transfer them to your phone make sure you hit eject before u just pull or yoink it out ur comp.
Hi everyone
I am a noob so be nice to me. I accidently cracked the screen on my Samsung Vibrant and so have a few questions about how to return the phone back to Stock/unrooted (just like befor i flashed). I am fine if i have to lose my contacts, apps. ect...
Background:
I rooted my phone with One-Click-Root/Unroot from XDA (loved it). I then flashed the latest Nero 5.0 ROM from Team Wiskey (Love it). As part of either the root or flashing the ROM(i can't remember which one), I downloaded "ROM Manager" with CWR.
Q #1: Is it as easy returning to stock ROM as just using "Flashing ClockworkMod Recovery" or should I have used "nandroid" (don't know what it does, but I see it talked about) also?
Q #2: I hear people say that you need Odin to return back to stock ROM, but then I hear that is ONLY if you don't have ROM Manager w/CWR. Do I need Odin or do I only need ROM Manager w/CWR?
Q #3: If all I need is ROM Manager w/CWR and it returnes back to what it was before i flashed, can i just us the "Unroot" button on the One-Click-Root/Unroot"?
Q #4(Last Question): Will I recieve OTA's if I have to us Odin and flash a stock ROM, how do I get back to stock and recieveing OTA's?
I understand that there are alot of posts asking how to return to stock but that is from people where something in the programs went wrong when trying to return to stock. I am just wondering what programs (other than ROM Manager and CWR) are need for me to return to stock? Please help, I don't want my phone to be rejected because my warranty is void. Thanks
Noob123
All thats needed to return to stock is a Nandroid backup of your original ROM.
Oh wait.....
Why do people totally fail at this?
What you need now is an original ROM for your device and then flash it from recovery.
So in other words, I need to download a 2.1 Rom (last version i had) from somewhere back on to my computer and then do the same things that i did to flash Nero 5? Is that where Odin comes in? OR, would CWR already have that ROM and everything all in one package?
Like I said, I am a nook. I am suprised that i didnt brick my phone rooting and flashing a ROM the first time. I may be pushing my luck going back to stock. But, it needs to be done if i want my phone fixed.
I would have a look HERE, in the Samsung Vibrant forum. I'm sure you'll find an Official ROM to Flash somewhere in there.
You would just put the .zip on your SD card, restart to Recovery and select the option to Flash from SD
Okay, i am getting it now. However, wont the "Update.zip" (Nero 5.0) be there on my SD memory already? Will i damage my phone if i delete the "Update.zip" and put in the Stock.zip (then do the recovery thing)? So once i get the Stock ROM uploaded on my phone, can i just use the one-click-unroot (from XDA) to have my phone be unrooted and new just like it was when i bought the phone? Will i get OTA's?
Thank you for your help, i am sorry for bugging you but i feel like i am starting to understand it more. These are probably the last questions that i have....probably
I have a few questions.
Can I use google voice on this for video chat?
Which rom can I install to make this feel more like my Droid 2.
Do I need clockwork mod installed before I root.
Is there a guide to rooting this?
Once I completely customize my gtab, is there always going to be a way to do a factory reset on the event I need to send it in for repairs or what not?
So far this seems like a new tab, my first tab ever. I am sickend by the UI and that is the very first thing I would like to change, I have looked around aand it looks like there are 3 different roms to choose from.
I will greatly appreciate any and all answers for my quesions.
Thanks.
Welcome! Read, Search, and read some more. As has been quoted oft times before "search is your friend". Each of the subjects listed is readily answerable here from previous posts. If you get stuck, research some more, and if still you are stumped ask away. Lots of good people here will help but they appreciate a little homework being done upfront first. Have fun and jump in.
1) Not yet. Wait for Honeycomb and we should be in business.
2) Depends on what rom you're running on your Droid 2. If you run Cyanogen there, then install Cyanogen on your tab and it'll be identical. Otherwise if you're running more or less stock on your Droid, then there's probably not going to be an exact match.
3) You don't have to "root" per se. The bootloader is already unlocked, so, in essence, you're already rooted. Just install clockwork and you're good to go.
4) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950 will give you restore instructions.
5) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245 tells you how to get up and going with custom roms.
6) Out of the available options, I'd currently recommend VEGAN, though of course it's somewhat of a matter of opinion.
Welcome to the forums, and glad you're here. Let us know if you have other questions.

Search for Google Voice...

I don't use Google Voice. Am waiting on the Skype App to add video. In the meantime Yahoo! Messenger works.
Which rom can I install to make this feel more like my Droid 2.
I don't own a Droid 2 but there are several polls indicating VEGAn Tab is the most "rommed" of the images available...

I can't ask this there because I have less then 10 posts
But on the guide about installing closkworkmod, I am having an extremely difficult time.
Entering ClockworkMod:
If you want to get into ClockworkMod you need to shut down your device, then press the Power and Volume+ button (the same way you did to install ClockworkMod).
However, when I do that, it is just installing some thing again.
And I don't even know if I installed cwm in the first place.
I unzipped the update.zip and the Recovery folder to the root of the tablet, followed the instructions it showed it updating something, and now trying to enter cwm, all it ever does is repeat the update.

Delete the update and try to boot into recovery again.
also, nothing shows up in my root folder on the tablet, and when I downloaded the internal to my tablet, and I tried to copy from downloads and paste in to the root folder, it says paste failed.
EDIT*
So I deleted the clockwork d/l from sdcard/downloads, and tried to boot into recovery, It showed me the same install box, however I had deleted the install zip.
So I am pretty sure I didn't install cwm in the first place.
I don't know how to get the update.zip into the right location, and I don't have a microSD to install it from.
Cancel that, I don't know what I was doing wrong.
It is now installed.
Good evening,
I did a search but could not find any posts that were clear on restoring to stock so I can send my tablet in for a screen repair.
How do I remove CWM and put everything back to the original factory stock? I am currently running Prime 1.3.
Thank you in advance!
I've not read anything about this yet and we certainly need a good guide written about this topic. Maybe your best bet is to pm some of the people who have created the roms for advice. If you get an answer feel free to write a nice guide about it.
I'll have to look for the thread (search for unroot in dev forum). You'll need to flash back to your nandroid backup, then download 8.2.3.9, and apply the blob from that package the same way you did with blob5. I want to say theres no need to flash back (step 1), but that's what I did. Make sure you do a md5 on the PC/Mac copy against the copy on you're sd card as well. After that you should be unrooted and back to stock.
Edit: Needless to say you only do the blob steps and not the gingerbreak, SU stuff
Edir 2: Also, I know when you root a second time that the boom sh or something needs to be deleted, though I'm not sure whether or not its a good idea to delete these before sending it back.

I am preparing to root my Verizon GS3. The process looks pretty simple, but I still have a few questions I would like to have cleared up first just to make sure everything goes to plan.
I have downloaded the following files as instructed to in one of the threads on how to ROOT the GS3:
- USB Drivers
- Odin (unzipped with Winzip)
- Stock rooted system image (mirror link)
- CWM
My first question is whether or not I am supposed to unzip the stock rooted system image. The post says I should have a file named "rooted.system.img.tar" to select in the PDA section of ODIN, but the name of the file I have is just "rooted.system.img."
The second question I have is which custom recovery should I choose? I downloaded both, but don't know if one is better than the other or if it just comes down to personal preference. Also, do I need to unzip either one of those files? And if I choose not to push a recovery now, can I push it later if needed to flash a new ROM that I like. I ask this because the only real reason I want to root right now is to disable the ridiculous wifi notification in the notification bar and the pop up that you get when opening a "high data usage application."
Another concern I have is returning to stock. On my DROID X2, all I had to do was use RSD Lite and flash back to stock. I have downloaded the stock kernel and stock ROM off of one of the threads on here (I can't find it for some reason), but was just wondering how I would go about using that to get back to the way it was out of the box.
Thanks for the help!
Edit: As far as the first question goes, I selected the rooted.system.img in ODIN and it shows it as rooted.system.image.tar at the end, so I'm guessing no unzipping for that file is necessary, correct?
Don't unzip that tar you are good with that system image. Install the usb drivers and put your phone into download mode. Start Odin then set that to pda plug in your phone and wait for the drivers to install correctly. Remember you should have a full battery before flashing. Browse to your image then flash the system image, it might take a while to flash so be patient and don't move the computer or phone.
Just pick the recovery you like they are really up to personal preference. I like cwm because I used it in my og droid and dinc. You can always change recoveries in the future if you find a different one you like more.
You don't need to install cwm in the old way, just download it from the play store after you are rooted. When you install the recovery from the app choose Verizon galaxy s3 from the list. It will ask for root before trying to install cwm recovery. When you install cwn it will make your phone say custom when you boot up so if you don't want that skip the recovery for now.
I have never returned a phone to stock but I think to return to stock flash the stock Verizon image with Odin.
Down with Verizon for locking my bootloader

Sorry for the late reply. I went out to eat with the fam.
Thanks for clearing that stuff up for me! Can't wait to root my GS3 in 7 days after my return policy is used up!
Thanks again!
You're welcome good luck with the phone.

So I am officially getting ready to ROOT my GS3. Is there anything I need to do to prepare for the process? I have seen people say you need to enable any of the bloat you have disabled and I have also seen wiping the cache thrown around a few times, so I would just like to know if there is anything along those lines that I need to do before I start.

I'd follow this to root. Don't need to do anything else but what it says there.
