So I powered the phone down for class, and when I turned it back on three hours later, it hung at the boot animation, and then eventually just went to a black screen. Battery is at 100%, I had it charged that morning. Is there any way to fix my phone?
Need a little more info from you. Did you root, install any lag fixes, did you make a nandroid backup? One way that's sure to fix it is the Odin One Click Downloader listed in the development section of the Captivate forums, its always worked for me, but if you didn't have a backup it will wipe your settings and info and you'll be starting from scratch.
I was rooted, I was in the process of the 'one-step lag fix' when I realized busybox was giving me an error. It was version 1.18.1 instead of 1.17.1. So I went back to the recovery menu thing and reinstalled packages.
I have no clue what Nandroid is honestly. I'll look into Odin, but is there a Mac version?
As far as I know there isn't a Mac version of Odin yet....once you root download Rom Manager from the market place and then have it install the Clockwork Mod Recovery image, once thats done if your rom is stable use Backup current rom. I'd check if theres a wiki for Mac users, I use windows so I have no clue. I know you can download a new version of busybox installer from the market that lets you choose which version of busybox to install now. The ext2 lag fixes are pretty unstable and have caused some headaches (worked fine for me, but I still reverted back to normal). I'll post back later if I figure out a way for you to return to stock with a mac, but you might be able to just flash one of the stock roms through rom manager now after you change its name to update.zip, or flash one of the new roms that root for you (I've had pretty good luck with those so far).
Captivate doesnt work
I don't know if we have the same problem, but i got stuck on that black screen and wont boot up. I was able to recover it by doing that one click root for samsung captivate. (check it out on one of the threads) Just run the one click root/unroot it doesnt matter. Now when you're on the phone recovery screen instead of clicking "reinstall something" go to delete data, click it. as well as delete cache. then go up to do a reboot. Thats it, Worked for me hope it works for you!
p.s. Don't know if you can do it on a mac though, or you can always borrow a friends pc.

My computer doesn't recognize my captivate at all, so I don't know how I can put an update.zip on the phone.

I'm gonna try the delete cache/data.
You're most likely going to have to do an Odin flash.
If you are doing the ext2 fix, and busybox throws you an error, there are instructions that say run Remove to back off and fix busybox before rebooting, or this happens.
does anyone know exactly what the 'delete all user data' does?
Does it just delete downloaded apps and your contacts and music and stuff? Or will it like completely destroy my phone?
The only way to completely destroy your phone, is with physical violence, immolation, etc.
so it just goes back to a stock ROM without downloaded apps/root/whatnot?

Odin will return the phone to an out of the box state, delete all user info will just remove you settings and personal info. I've read in other forums that you don't even need to download drivers to get your phone connected to a Mac, have you gone into settings>applications>development and enabled usb debugging? Try that and then plug your phones usb cable in. The Odin One Click Downloader thread also says you don't need drivers for Mac. I asked in the wiki thread for someone to post some info for Mac users, maybe it'll help.
EDIT: Also I know its a pain but you can get Astro File Manager from the market (free) and go into Preferences and enable browser download, then just download the update.zip on your phone and move it around and rename it with Root Explorer (a paid app but worth the money) that should let you flash roms and so on from your own phone after rooting of course.
Hey huys, Im coming from the vibrant to att captivate, tmobile vibrant was very simple to flash with rom manager can I do that with the captivate as well?
The only thing rom manager is good for is making the first update.zip with cwm for flashing a rom from stock, otherwise if you are on a custom rom it really isn't needed at all as all of the roms have an extended power many to boot into cwm recovery and from there it is the exact same process...
Kool thanks it seems that this is the only way I can do it coming from stock. Because if I press all three buttoms to throw me into clock recovery when I hit reinstall packages it tells me the signature fail so im going to use rom manager hopefully I don't brick my phone wish me luck. By the way incase I brick my phone ia there a way to odin back to stock and if there is can you guide me where I can get those files

Rom manager won't do you any good either. You need to look up 3e recovery and fix the signature problem

Oh!! You are on stock 2.2 it won't work. Do a search for 3e recovery signing, all update.zip files have to be digitally signed to work, there is a fix where that is no longer required. Or since I'm guessing you have the update.zip already you could use odin to get back to 2.1 which had 2e recovery and not have to fix the 3e or need to root for rom manager to work either.
Edit: pirate you are a ghost slipping in invisibly while I'm replying
Is a virgin phone stock 2.2 just rooted by super one click. Where can I get the file to fix the signature
umm you could have used the search function and had it by now...
in any case its in this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
how many times is this rom manager/3e question going to be asked TODAY? im counting 3 sofar.
i answered the other 2.
and im up to 6 this week. all new threads..
At least he's not hellbent on flashing cm7.
I haven't posted much on here but I have been reading since June/July. I had this problem but found the answer thanks to the search feature. That is why I didn't even flash a rom until a week ago. I wanted to be informed, understand how everything works, etc. Thanks to all of you devs. for your hard work!
so i have a b90 tf101 with .21 which was previously rooted with vipermod. I wanted to avoid flashing cwm until ics came out to keep it as stock as possible for upgrade.
So i was trying to figure out ubuntu installer, and it wouldnt work for some reason, so i figured i might try to reinstall busybox. Anyway somewhere along the line my wifi stopped working it gets stuck on obtaining ip, then i tried factory reset, and wiping all data to fix that issue (didnt work). I then noticed i somehow lost my root access. so i tried rerooting and it keeps saying -exec 'system/bin/sh' failed: no such file or directory.
So i guess my best option is to try to get this thing flashed with stock firmware using stock recovery if possible, and would love an explanation of how to do that (searched for miles online and couldnt find anything about how to use the stock recovery) or if anyone has any other advice it would be much appreciated
Thanx

Well, if you still have cwm and can get to it...you're good. just download the super wipe lite file from the revolution hd thread...download a ROM such as revolution hd...put both in external sd...go to cwm recovery...flash the wipe script...then flash the rom.
Then just wait till ics is out...then flash a custom ics ROM...instead of trying to go stock again and messing things up...cause i bet that there will be a root stock ics rom within hours of release.
thats my problem i never installed cwm. cant i flash a stock rom using the stock recovery? do you know anything about the wifi issue? if not how can i get rid of superuser so i can rma?

After you have download the file from Asus, make sure to extract the files from within. Put it on the root of your sd card.
Power off the TF.
Push and hold Vol down plus power button
As soon as you see words scrolling at the top left corner
Push Vol up immediately (within 5 sec) to get into recovery mode.
Hopefully it read the update file and flash it.
sry hopefully this is the last question. when i extract the file there is a folder called asus inside it with another zip inside that and a blob with some files inside that. Which should i put on the sd card. and by sd card do you mean the internal memory or microsd.
thanks a million for the help
IIRC, after you extract there's an Asus folder, in that folder is an Update folder.
It's the zip inside the Update folder that need to go on the external micro sd card
as a side not the reason that the ubuntu installer id not work is that you have a b90 which it clearly states ubuntu does not work on becasue of sbk2
i could be wrong but im pretty sure it just visualizes ubuntu and doesnt actually install it. anyway thanks for all the help guys it turns out to flash the stock firmware you just put it in the microsd and press the tiny exclamation mark next to the clock on the stock rom. took me forever to figure out, but it fixed everything. I got wifi working, then re-rooted, then flashed team-rogue recover (thanks for that one baseballfanz) as rom manager said it wasnt compatible with tf101, but do u guys know if there is any way to get regular cwm, and finally flashed krakd.
Thanks again to everyone, and let me just say this is one of the most helpful forums i have ever been on

Not sure what the "regular cwm" is but you should be able to flash krakd rom with the team rouge cwm recovery.
The only other recovery I recommend would be Roach's 3.2.0.1 version.
Both version can be found here.

I bought my phone from someone who had put a custom ROM on it. Its always acting up.. especially touch screen and it drives me INSANE. maybe the person who downloaded it was stupid and did it wrong. no clue
Anyway.. I want to go back to STOCK.. like remove everything. How do I UNINSTALL this stuff? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
If you want to return to stock you could either flash this thru recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328698
or else use Odin to return to pure unrooted stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186954
the first option is all stock except it is pre-rooted and deodexed(basically for theming/modding).
edit: on second look, you will probably have to Odin(2nd option), because there is no other reliable way to disable the lagfix that you are surely running on Glorious Overdose.
If I were you, I would just flash a better rom.
Custom roms help make the Sidekick wayy smoother and more responsive.
But if you want completely stock Sidekick 4g, just go Odin your device.
You have the best ROM it can have. Re-install it, trust me you do NOT want to go back to stock.

flash a rom and wipe everything before you flash it, it will leave you with a fresh start and custom roms are better performance wise.
cant figure this out..
okay so I tried downloading ODIN on my phone, when i scan the barcode my phone refuses to open it. I also tried sending an SMS to the download link & directly downloading it from the browser. None of those options worked.
I'm trying to run ODIN on a macbook.. cant figure out how. Ive tried downloading the rar file and unzipping it but it keeps telling me its an application (which im guessing is meant for phone only use?)
so.. in short terms
1) I cant open ODIN on my phone. Now what?
2) what does FLASH mean? copy and paste flash drive?
I think you guys underestimated how much i DONT know about phones. lol. I'm trying though!!
Thanks in advance!!
LOL. I'll try to help. I don't know anything about ODIN, but as long as you can get in to recovery, you shouldn't need it.
With the screen on and unlocked, hold the power button.
A menu should pop up that includes the option: "Recovery".
Click Recovery. Your phone will reboot and take you there.
From recovery you can "flash" a ROM (you download a ROM which is a zip file, put it on your SDCARD, and then use recovery to "Install ZIP from SDCARD").
You probably don't need to do any of that though, as GOv2 is probably just fine for you, so, instead you might want to try just clicking "wipe" and rebooting. Your phone should be like new and running fine as long as the previous owner didn't mess with anything in /system. If he did, then re-flash GOv2 or another ROM.
WARNING: You will lose all your apps and settings, so if you want to keep anything, download TitaniumBackup first, then click Menu->Batch->Backup User Apps with Data.
Also check your mounts in mounst and storage. Should read
Unmount
Mount
Mount
Unmount/system

Unfortunately, you can't move backup data between a rom like Glorious Overdose and stock. It's just going to cause you problems.
Just backup your apps with a free app like Astro, Odin, and start fresh on a stock build.
This is bad advice... you NEVER need to ODIN if you can get into Recovery!
Also, you can backup all user apps/data you want. Only restoring system-data has danger potential (but usually most that is fine too since all roms here are Froyo)
Finally, the mounts thing is something unique to our phone, but yes, for this phone you should check your mounts before flashing a rom, and before rebooting after flashing a rom. AFAIK, all 4 should say "unmount" meaning they are all mounted. I don't know why HewettBR suggested that data&sdcard should be unmounted (probably nothing matters other then system [and maybe cache] being mounted).

First off i will make this clear I DID NOT CREATE ANY OF THESE I AM JUST RE-HOSTING THEM i know alot of download links failed after awhile an seeing how there is only about 1-2 people still on this forum that actually try to contribute. and i hope alot of people will find this useful ..
i will add what it is an what to do with it after the links .
SIDEKICK 4G files
ADB Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/2k0wp2qmd805oq7/ADB_Files.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?a2ytuvc4qandhfi
extract to c:\
you will have to make a folder name it adb
this is to enter reboot recovery and download mode with out a root.
ODIN KD1 Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/w2lqhszgxajp564/Odin3+v1.61andsk4g.pit.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?t1gvfrwqq4n1y3d
this needs 2 other files which i dont have anymore but either way i recommend the kg2 files
ODIN KG2https://www.dropbox.com/s/uddzc6ss9v31lh8/t839-Sidekick4G-UVKG2-One-Click.jar
this is if you need to restore to stock
just put your phone into download mode either through the phone or adb files above
but this may take a few trys (i did my phone took the whole night to get back to a fresh stock)
Super-One Click to Root Devicehttp://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rj08beywov4thc1
this is the main thing you will need to root the device just download unzip in to a new folder and run (make sure device is in debugging mode) settings > application > development > debugging mode
Beginners packhttp://d-h.st/QxO
This pack has all the stuff you need for beginning sk4g root/cwm also has the kg2 one click odin which may be needed for faulty root(does happen not all the time so if you get an error you may have to odin back to stock then re root)
i hope anyone who does have any files will upload them here to help others as i dont have every file that may be needed..
Extras:
KJ2 Lockscreens
(if you dont like the update status in the notification center go to settings>display and turn off before flashing this)https://www.dropbox.com/s/kypk18gqszx4onj/KJ2_Locks_v1.1_-_PDT.zip

There is aother set of drivers you can download that work with the sidekick I forgot the name should be in a sticky tho
Also it might be the computer or cord sometimes the pins in them get damaged so id suggest you try another cord or computer / usb port
If the computer isn't reading the device is plugged in even if everything else is working flawless then its the phone so try turning it off an plugging it in as then none of the systems are running an should charge if so then you may have to odin which is a pain

You have to stay away from ROM manager, it flashes the wrong recovery and well... You'll be stuck at stock. This phone isn't like too many others, it seems to hide recovery within the ROM you are using, then when you flash a custom ROM you get a recovery embedded in there. I believe if you use one of the one click installers it adds the voodoo (red recovery) to your phone, which is the one you need.
So there are some annoying steps to flash your first ROM, but after you do all is good and you can flash like any other phone. Look in the general section for a sticky called noon guide to root or something, I believe that's what I used to get the red recovery, but I used a different method to root as I'm not a fan of one click anything
If you get stuck post back and someone here will be glad to jump in and help

Can I do this to get cwm http://theunlockr.com/2012/10/14/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-t-mobile-sidekick-4g/ I want to install the Jb Nexus rom...this is very confusing...I have a my touch 4g and it wasn't this complicated to flash cwm.
yes that looks about right to me, heres a quick synopsis of how i first rooted
1 searched out all files needed,
drivers
clockwork recovery
first rom i wanted to try
i got that recovery file and update.zip
2 then i was able to dig up THIS as if for learning purposes alone i dont use on clicks (and this will work with windows too)
3 after i was rooted i exchanged the recovery file in a similar way as laid out in the link you have
4 booted into that recovery (yellow)
acctually i think i just found the thread that helped me the most HERE
i know it seems complicated but its easy, if you mess things up you should learn to odin or heimdall anyway as if you ever f up you use this to go back to scratch and start over.
yeah it may have seemed easier on your glacier but htc and samsung build their firmware/software very different and in many ways i find the htc phone more complicated and are more easily bricked.
anyway follow the guides and youll be good
happy flashing!

Thanks, I did what the other guide said but when I do reinstall package I get an error of E:signature verification failed. Should I try deleting any cwm I did before from Rom Manager, not sure what to delete though...I'm almost there...
if you have a sig failed error my guess is you dont have the right clockwork, you cant use what comes with rom manager, in fact your best off deleting it and not using it, on any phone (but thats a different matter) THIS IS THE RECOVERY YOU NEED just to start, then you will end up flashing the voodoo lag fix recovery, once you have the voodoo (red) recovery your good to go, really its been enough time since i did all this that i may not be the best person to ask, but i do remember not seeing a single guide with all the info i needed, i had to take piece from here and a bit from there... i guess my recommendation is to read through the coutless posts of people attempting their first time and failing, you learn best from this but its time consuming
you need the file up there ^ an then follow this down here (if you get lost please tell me ill help if I can)
When cwm is finished downloading rename it to recovery (it will be a recovery.zip)
Put this file in your sd card but don't put it in ayfolders
The with the same file you want to extract it to (exapmle downloads) a new folder
With the file that is in a folder you want to move this to system\bin\
It will then ask if you want to replace a file an cick yes
Now go into recovery an reinstall packages
To download a rom
Install the zip to sdcard
Go into recovery
Reinstall packages
Go to backup and restore an make a backup (just in case)
Now wipe all data cache and go to advance an wipe dalvik
Go back an go to mounts
Unmount system
Go back
Go to install zip

Anyways if you need anything or looking for something ill try my best to find it (most roms die then links die just as fast I can't find something that's not there)
