I'm still considering the Viewsonic G tab and have another question. With this being a wi-fi only tab do you all find it fairly easy to find a hot spot when you are out and about?
Thanks!
Ed
Most people I imagine have wifi in there primary use spots (home, work, friends, normal hangouts) and those that don't have a phone that can become a wifi hotspot.
I personally don't have wifi but my phone is a G2 so I will always have wifi available.
I'd recommend getting one of those auto-connection things for the GTablet.
For instance, I've got WeFi (for the autoconnection ) and Easy WiFi (so I can manage through the web the various provider WiFi hotspots).
Also got 'em on my Nexus One and it works great here too (unlike the Nexus One, the GTablet does not remember my WiFi connection preferences AT ALL... But maybe that's just my particular one. Easy WiFi works great around this).
I just use my G2 for tethering and lots of places in my city offer hotspots so im golden. Depending on your phone you may or may not already have the option. I know I had to flash a custom ROM(CyanogenMod) before I had the feature.
Hope you figure something out

I am on the at&t 200mb data plan. Before the official froyo upgrade I ran the official 2.1 ROM, and while the phone totally sucked in almost every way, I was able to get by using only about 100mb per month spending most time on wifi but never worrying about using the web when on 3g. After the 2.2 official froyo update my phone began working like it should (except for gps of course) and I was very happy until I noticed that I was plowing through my data quota at many times the rate under 2.1. I am fairly certain that the change is due to changes in the "Use wireless networks" option. When this is turned off, very little data is used.
As we all know, the gps on the phone is useless, so turning off "Use wireless networks" is really inconvenient (weather widget doesn't work, can't quickly find stores, restaurants etc...), and forgetting to turn it back off means I use huge amounts of data.
I have tried the app in the market called "Location cache map" but it doesn't seem to stop LBS from using 3g data.
Does anyone have a solution for this? Do any of the custom roms address this issue?
Thanks

turning that off always makes my gps better. really it only complicates the process of getting a lock. my network location when @ home puts me about 1 mile nnw of my actual location. that feature is completely useless and makes my actual gps go haywire. turn it off. also turn off sensor assist.
once you get the information it needs downloaded to the phone the gps should work at an acceptable level. if i were you id turn off wireless networks and run the samsung gps restore app once. this seems to get rid of errors that clearing gps data doesnt. then you can delete the app if you wish. then in lbs test mode turn on agps msbased mode and change the supl server to supl.google.com and turn secure socket off. get a lock in that mode then switch back to stand alone.. then change the supl mode to control plane. it may also be benificail to use da_g's google fix or control plane fix. i dont have great tracking with adams fix's because agps on my phone is useless, i suspect it to be an interferance issue with the cell antenna. but i have best tracking with standalone mode even if locks take a couple more seconds.
if it fails to get a lock in the ms based mode or when running the gps restore app then you may have a legitamate hardware issue. in that case the best option is to get a keychain bluetooth gps reciever which will give better performance than the captivate is capable of.
network location and sensor assist are both problems for me and i dont recommend either.
The GPS just doesn't work on most of these phones. No amount of tweaking helps. I have been looking for a fix since I got the phone last August, nothing works. Its broken, end of story.

if you read my post you would have seen an alternate solution. you can get a keychain bluetooth gps. the network location service is complete garbage. dont ask for advice and go off on people trying to help. and dont discredit my advice unless you have tried that exact proceedure, one small detail can make all the difference.
your whole post sounds like you just like to whine. "ohh my gps dont work so i use network location, im too cheap to get a decent data plan so network location isnt good either. i can turn it off and have too look outside for the weather or set it based on my zip code but id rather complain...waaaa" go troll someplace else

My GPS works as well as can be expected on a phone sense running Phoenix series roms with Adams GPS fix, it is posted in the forums, should give it a go. As for loaction services with cell data not much you can do about it. These phones are data hungry like all good smartphones are.
Continuum v4 has awesome gps. Tweak lbstestmode a little and I had a 10mtr lock in less than ten second. And it maintained a 5 meter lock at 60mph. Yeah, I guess that REALLY sucks. and "use wifi" was not selected.

It is a serious question. You are not answering it.
I don't want to buy or carry or charge a Bluetooth receiver. I don't want to pay 10 dollars per month extra. These things make me a troll?

i may have had a short fuse earlier, that said i offered suggestions. the captivate is not that bad with gps all around but there are bad units. if you are satisfied that the gps will never work you can try a replacement. i can tell you mine and many others work as good as most other phones.
if you use network location it will use data (and wreak havok on your gps performance i might add). you can avoid using it or deal with it. you can use tasker (a pay app) to turn it on or off on a number of parameters like time of day or at app launch. it can be confussing at first but if you figure tasker out you can do a number of things with the phone automatically. also if you cant control that particular service(i never tried) you can turn off wireless data all together using tasker if you are on a custom rom.
if there is a free option available in the market to keep network location related data usage down i dont know about it. maybe someone does but they arent talking.
and maybe you are not a troll. trolls are way more actively annoying. but you are asking for solutions and no solution seems to satisfy you. that's annoying if i take the time to write a reply.

well I hate to say it but those are your only options. The basic data plan was not mentioned for those that use data alot. It was for those that bearly use it. It is either shut it off, get a bigger plan, or use a stand alone GPS.
Need some help.* I have a 4G Xoom with a 1GB data plan, so when I am away from the house, I tether it to myHTC Thundernbolt, which I have an unlimited tethering plan for.*
The problem I am having is this.* The devices stay connected just fine, but data thruput is spotty.* Little things, like emails, GTalk, etc gothrough just fine.* However things like web surfing hang.* I will gettwoor three pagesok, but then I go to a page and it hangs while loading the page between 1/3 and 1/2the way through the page.
Here is the info.*
Xoom is rooted, but stock.* Issue is pre and post root, pre and post 4G upgrade, and a couple of factory resets.* Pre and post update to 3.2.2 build HLK75. Connects fine on my network at home, and others like at resturaunts.* I've forgotten the network, etc... I have tried multiple browsers too. Happens with stock browser, Dolphin HD, Dolphin for Pad, and Opera. (I hate Opera) No other data issues on the Xoom. WiFi at home is smooth as butter, so is the 4G when I do turn it on.
The Thunderbolt.* Stock and unrooted.* Happens pre and post update to 2.3.4.* I have done factory reset, set the hotspot back to standar, changed channels, security, etc....* Also, the hotspot is set to always be on, not to time out. No data issues on the phone.
It is annoying to constantly not be able to use the net when aeay from the house. Help, please. Just let me know if you need more info. One last thing. It doesn't matter where I try it at. Hotspot at home (testing it) at work, or out other places. Also, I have tethered my laptop to the phone with no problems multiple times.
Thanks....
Sorry for the formatting and astriks, don't know how that happened.
what app are you using to tether have you tried any others like easy tether?
I am using the stock mobile hotspot app on the Thunderbolt. I have the unlimited tethering feature. Haven't tried another app, since I am paying to have the ability
After several days of testing, etc.... I think I have figured it out. Happens when the screen on the Thunderbolt times out. At that point, the hot spot stops responding. I checked and have it set for Always On, and tested the other two time frames there. Nothing changed. Guess I should call tech and try a CLNR.

I use Barnacle with my TB to tether both my Xoom and Nook Color with no problems. Have used Wireless Tether but prefer Barnacle for no particular reason.
Your the second to say something about a different app. I looked on the market, and all require root access. Haven't rooted yet.
Interesting development, after doing everything I could think of, I turned off the security as a last ditch effort. Goes against everything security wise, but..... It seems to make the difference.still a little latency, but it works.

You don't have to root your Xoom, you run the wifi tethering program on your Thunderbolt which does have to be rooted.
Sorry, I meant the Thunderbolt being rooted. The Xoom is, my Thunderbolt isn't. If I can't get this resolved any other way, I will root it. Going to call tomorrow and see if I can get it replaced and try a different unit first.

Now realize that I really should have posted this up in the HTC Thunderbolt area. It's not a Xoom issue, but a Thunderbolt issue.
MOD's, if I can request, can this thread be moved like that? Thanks...
ive noticed during primes boot up screen there is a gps device being provisioned with a bus number, but i cant seem to get gps to work at all... does the wifi only version have gps and if not what is this device found by the boot screen...
and if there is a device but its locked out what are the chances of being able to hack it to operate?

YES both the Standard and the Prime have a GPS. But the Primes GPS is basically null and void. It doesn't work. Its a hardware flaw. no software patch can fix it.
im using the tf101 b70 and prime rom i should have been more specific... so the tf101 wifi only does have gps... sweet! throw in 3g huawei dongle support and im set
woo got the gps test app to show up, thats awesome... but the reception seems weak, is there anywhere to plug in a gps antennae (or wifi antenna while im asking) like there is sometimes on phones? or anything i can do to boost the reception and or the quality of it

make sure it has direct view of the satellites. and you might want to download a GPS app to make sure that you have good signal.
Download "GPS Status" from the market. Tap the menu button, then hit tools and then "Manage A-GPS State". Clear the GPS history and redownload, then restart your tab. If that doesn't work, PM me.
Since you posted this in the forum for the original transformer, I must just say that the TF101-B1 I have, has the best GPS I've ever used. Beats the phones I've used and even a friends dedicated GPS module.
The Prime on the ther hand, I don't expect very much out of it's GPS.

I can swear to transformers real GPS took it out one day (no wifi) and it was able to show me my exacty location for as long as i used it in google maps
That's what really shocked me tbh. Over Thanksgiving I was out of state and my phones AGPS crapped out the moment I hit the boarder, with WiFi and 3G open. Sitting in a house where I couldn't even get cellular signal for miles, my TF101 was able to tell me exactly where the hell I was standing....with no WiFi connection and being 300 miles from home/cached territories.
Guess the Prime will be worse than my old phone but heck, the original TF101 is a nice GPS.

There was someone complaining in another thread about the GPS in the transformer,
He was comparing another sitting side by side.. and I think he was unhappy with the time frames to lock in..
I use my alot around China.. and in the programs thread have directed a few to a modded google maps for those that are locked in behind firewalls.. ([APP MOD] Google Maps 6.0.3)

I have also used this trick..
[Trick] Speed Up Satelite Fix for GPS on Android
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
and it is working wonders for timeframes where I am to hook in..
Might help anyone that is having troubles..
There is a problem with GPS Status. The gps signal drops when you go to another program or to the home screen. I'll open GPS Status first to get signal then go & open Google Maps. Google Maps can't find my location right away because there is no gps signal.
Yes, my TF101 B80 does have a working GPS.
Dear seasoned Xda members,
I love my GT7+ and have enjoyed the versatility of the Android Os (my first device). As I carry the device around and (attempt to) use it at work the size is perfect. However, I have terrible issues with the WIFI. At home there is no issue - but I work in a hospital, and the device is only good for me if it can get WIFI.
Well... in the hospital it will connect to both the "guest" wifi and the "secure" wifi (for which my device has been setup), but in both cases the connection just "dies" after about 2 minutes. The only way to get on again it by re-booting the device.
I had hoped that all of the firmware updates would address the issue - and I have read that some routers are troublesome for the GT7+. Unfortunately I will have little control over what routers are being used.
The device is no use to me if I can't use it at work - and Im wondering if I should sell it or if ICS will resolve the Wifi issue.... I would appreciate any guidance even if its speculation.
[btw the device is entirely stock, not rooted, and using ADW instead of TW]
Cheers!
Here's samsung's ics update list.http://androidandme.com/2012/02/devices/official-samsung-android-4-0-update-list/. You'll probebly have to wait until Q2 or Q3 for ICS, unless someone ports CM9.

I guess it was my fault to get the WIFI only version thinking it would be easy to switch between networks. Seems like a bug that they should have wrinkled out before shipping a "Wifi-only" device.
In any case, if anyone is looking for another device to play with - shoot me an email (aliota [at] gmail.com)
I had the same issue prior. I bought this Tab twice and with both devices the same thing happened at work aswell. At home it was working perfect. At work any wireless connected but dropped in like 2 minutes. Very Frustrating. I was actually thinking of picking it up again assuming the issue had been fixed..

Have you tied to do a factory reset on the device and then reconfigure the wifi connections? I bounce between many wireless networks during my day and the connection is stable.
I did have a few reboots until I set the wifi to turn off with the screen and never to turn off when charging, now the device is rock solid.
I believe that once ICS is dropped there will be some custom firmwares (ROMS) available for the device. Every new device I see posts like this where there is one feature or another that is flaky, once the developers start working their wonders on it the device becomes wonderful. The biggest hold up right now for development is the WiFi driver. Based on history of other devices, eventually that will be overcome as well.

Interesting... I've tried this in the past without any luck, but will try again. I really want to keep the device because it is quite powerful and the 7" size makes it much more portable than a 10"+ tablet.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have noticed some wifi issues with mine also but they dont seem to big of a deal for what I use mine for. I would really recommend keeping it as it is duel-core, lightweight, can even fit in some pockets.
But rather you keep it or not I suppose depends what you use your tablet for mostly I suppose.
I'm trying to get this app to run like it was intended to, I had the ps4 hooked up to it and tmo is still seeing it as I have my hot spot turned on. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'd also like to be able to get a tablet to work with it as well without using it as a hot spot. Any help would be much appreciated

It's nothing to do with the app. T-Mobile figured out how to track wifi tethering despite this app. USB tethering to PC with Pdanet still works as long as you hide your tether usage. From there you can broadcast a wi-fi signal, although this method kinda sucks as far as connectivity/speed goes (at least, it does for me and my laptop).
Have there been any work arounds other than this app? Like a ROM or a modified version of the hot spot ?
