[Q] Tethering issues Xoom to HTC Thunderbolt - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need some help.* I have a 4G Xoom with a 1GB data plan, so when I am away from the house, I tether it to myHTC Thundernbolt, which I have an unlimited tethering plan for.*
The problem I am having is this.* The devices stay connected just fine, but data thruput is spotty.* Little things, like emails, GTalk, etc gothrough just fine.* However things like web surfing hang.* I will gettwoor three pagesok, but then I go to a page and it hangs while loading the page between 1/3 and 1/2the way through the page.
Here is the info.*
Xoom is rooted, but stock.* Issue is pre and post root, pre and post 4G upgrade, and a couple of factory resets.* Pre and post update to 3.2.2 build HLK75. Connects fine on my network at home, and others like at resturaunts.* I've forgotten the network, etc... I have tried multiple browsers too. Happens with stock browser, Dolphin HD, Dolphin for Pad, and Opera. (I hate Opera) No other data issues on the Xoom. WiFi at home is smooth as butter, so is the 4G when I do turn it on.
The Thunderbolt.* Stock and unrooted.* Happens pre and post update to 2.3.4.* I have done factory reset, set the hotspot back to standar, changed channels, security, etc....* Also, the hotspot is set to always be on, not to time out. No data issues on the phone.
It is annoying to constantly not be able to use the net when aeay from the house. Help, please. Just let me know if you need more info. One last thing. It doesn't matter where I try it at. Hotspot at home (testing it) at work, or out other places. Also, I have tethered my laptop to the phone with no problems multiple times.
Thanks....

Sorry for the formatting and astriks, don't know how that happened.

what app are you using to tether have you tried any others like easy tether?

I am using the stock mobile hotspot app on the Thunderbolt. I have the unlimited tethering feature. Haven't tried another app, since I am paying to have the ability

After several days of testing, etc.... I think I have figured it out. Happens when the screen on the Thunderbolt times out. At that point, the hot spot stops responding. I checked and have it set for Always On, and tested the other two time frames there. Nothing changed. Guess I should call tech and try a CLNR.

I use Barnacle with my TB to tether both my Xoom and Nook Color with no problems. Have used Wireless Tether but prefer Barnacle for no particular reason.

Your the second to say something about a different app. I looked on the market, and all require root access. Haven't rooted yet.
Interesting development, after doing everything I could think of, I turned off the security as a last ditch effort. Goes against everything security wise, but..... It seems to make the difference.still a little latency, but it works.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk

You don't have to root your Xoom, you run the wifi tethering program on your Thunderbolt which does have to be rooted.

Sorry, I meant the Thunderbolt being rooted. The Xoom is, my Thunderbolt isn't. If I can't get this resolved any other way, I will root it. Going to call tomorrow and see if I can get it replaced and try a different unit first.

Now realize that I really should have posted this up in the HTC Thunderbolt area. It's not a Xoom issue, but a Thunderbolt issue.
MOD's, if I can request, can this thread be moved like that? Thanks...

[Q] Anyone else Having wifi connection issues with the xoom?

Hey I was wondering if anyone else was having wifi connection issues with the xoom? Every time I use my xoom I have to keep retrying to load the market, webpages and everything else that uses data. Usually have to reload the market around 3-5 times to get it to work. I have tried 2 different routers and stilll the same thing. Please let me know if anyone else is having this issue and if there is a way to fix it. Thanks
P.s. When Im on 3G everything is fine
I get it but only with Market, I assumed it was a market issue.
On. 3G, for me, everything is dog slow, but I never get the Retry box.

Mine works perfect with my AT&T U-Verse gateway and tethered to my AT&T captivate. No problems here at all with wifi. Do you have problems with other wifi routers? Go to Starbucks or a friends and see if the same issue occurs. If not, there is something with your router that Xoom does not like.
I'm having WiFi issues as well. I don't have any issues with any other laptops in my house ... but my Xoom ... get very poor signal on WiFi and sometimes doesn't get any connection at all. This is serious buzz kill.
Mine is also choking on wifi. Switch to 3g and no problems. Annoying.

Wifi is suspect on the Xoom. I cannot get a connection to my secure wireless at work but I can connect to the less secure guest wireless network. I also could not initially tether with my phone (TMobile Vibrant) but after I downloaded Mobile AP I was able to tether just fine and have not had any issues since then.
No complaints here to report. I'm pulling in on average a speed of 17mbps download on most days from my home wifi network. Quite the speedy little guy my Xoom is.
WiFi hasnt been a problem for me either.
So far, I've used it on 4 different wireless networks (G and N/G), using various security options and I connect to each without fail. Hell, Ive even seen the Xoom connect to WiFi when driving down the street towards places that I have it configured to see.
I did have some trouble at one point due to my DNS and DHCP servers being offline. I didnt suspect any issues with them, so I spent more time than I should have troubleshooting the Xoom.

Always Connecting...
Greetings All,
I have been having issues as well after the update. The wireless always disconnects and connects and doesn't stay connected. No problems with my Droid X or laptop or other device.
Problem is that now I'm getting very close to going over my data plan.
Is there a fix in the works, since it worked perfectly with 3.0

UPDATE: Uninstalled the leaked Flash 10.2 and that has fixed the problem, somewhat. Still disconnects, but less.

Glad I found this. Yes mine doea it too. If I linger on a webpage for more than 30 seconds or so, it disconnects. (Yes I have all settings set correctly) same issue with market and now facebook and twitter app after the update. No connection or synchronization failed.

Wireless issue fixed....
Greetings again,
Even after uninstalling flash, the problem persisted somewhat. I was getting very frustrated and so I reset the xoom to factory settings. A few notes on that. All applications were reinstalled, through the market which is good and bad.
So far, after 2 days of heavy wireless use, not a single drop in wifi connectivity.
Hope this helps...

So far my wireless is great. I use WP2 Secure at home, a WEP at my parents, and a MAC based approval network at work. All are steady with full bars and no issues.
SleeplessNinja
MyXoomChannel http://www.youtube.com/sleeplessninjas
Its the encrypton protocol, WPA2 with AES will cause problems.
TKIP works.
I also have random issues. Some days its just fine, but other days wifi works and then stops working, usually a reboot fixes it.
Must be some wifi issue.
I have a fully factory stock xoom and have had NO wy fy problems at all! internet conection firm and stable. I intend not to root my zoom untill all the important updates are done and stable. I also am waiting for my 4G card install. I have WPA2 with AES and the xoom conected to it with NO problem
I haven't had any problems with mine whatsoever. I think it could be your router. My Xoom stays connected with my router and I haven't had a single problem so far with connected wifi.
My PS3 needs a router reset every single time I want to play Black Ops though.
ihad this issue. I think it may be hioneycomb and not xoom related because I experienced it on the acer iconia. The good news is that I resolved my connection issue with wifi. On the surface it looks like a dhcp handshake issue so, if you assign your xoom a static ip from your router, the issue goes away and all is good.

[Q] Can't download anything from the Market when on Wifi

I just got my Nexus S this Sunday, and it worked fine for the first day. Second day came along, and it started acting up. When I tried downloading stuff from the Market, it would "start" the download, so when you checked on the Notification Bar, it had the Arrow pointing down, but no Data was being transferred. It just stalled there, without any progress being made. I've tried rebooting, and once that worked, but it never seemed to work again after that. It works flawlessly if I'm 3G, though.
Just yesterday I rooted for the first time, and got CM7, didn't like the Home Screen Replacement, and switched to NS Collab. I haven't really done any fiddling besides that. It was actually already acting up being I ever even thought of rooting.
I've tried the GTalk solutions, signing on and off: nothing.
Help?
Anyone?
I just got this phone, this shouldn't be happening now...

Do you think I should try installing anything on it?
Or is it a problem with my Network? I don't really have access to any other WiFi Connections right now, so I have no clue if the problem is with my WiFi.
Hmm, strange. I have never used 3G on my nexus...only wifi and never had a problem browsing, downloading or whatever.
I would say that your problem is with your wifi device.
I've tried opening Port 5228 on my Firewall, but still, nothing.
What pisses me off the most, is that, Samsung throws the blame at Google, Google doesn't know what to do about it, tells me to do random things, such as open Talk, instead of giving actual solutions. And the things they tell me to do don't work at all.
I can see why people prefer iOS over Android.
Simple: it just works! Android is flaky as heck.
Don't get me wrong, I really like my phone, but for it to not function properly within the first week of me using it is bull****. And then the company that's supposed to oversee this doesn't have a friggen clue about what to do. Incredible.
maybe you have a bugged phone...
one thing you should notice is that the wifi reception on this phone is weak, that´s a fact. But I manage to connect either open and wep/wpa wifi networks...
That's the thing though, WiFi works perfectly. I can connect and do anything on it, I'm even using the XDA apply over Wifi right now. The only thing I can't do is download anything from the market...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
puuuutz, now I got it. hmm, on early days of nexus, I read a post that people coudn´t get in the market store or download. To fix, the suggestion was reinstall market, but don´t ask me how, cause I dont know, uahuahauh.
now, my nexus is stock, not rooted, and everything works fine. maybe if you try get back to stock, will work...
good luck
I've tried deleting all updates the Market installed on itself, getting it back to its stock version, nada.
Since yesterday, I've also reverted back to stock. The bootloader is still unlocked, though I might lock it up soon.
Much rather have a functioning phone, even if parts of it aren't perfect, than a pretty paperweight.
I'm almost giving up on trying to fix this. Google has no clue of what to do, Samsung much less. I guess I'll just stick with the apps I have, and wait until eventually Google fixes the issue.

Tethering

Only posting this because I haven't seen it in the few posts up for our Skyrockets.
After rooting, I got android's built in wifi hotspot working by simply freezing the system app "TetheringManager" in Titanium Backup.
Hope it helps anyone having issues.

Is this any different than tethering from a custom ROM once the AT&T config is removed? I've been tethering on my Captivate for well over a year now and this seems to function identically.

Yea its the same, Devs usually take out the teathering manager on there roms
All you need is a Widget that turns on tethering...so you don't have to click so many buttons to turn it on!

Using Alien #4 on Motorola Atrix, I would tether w/o plan maybe a couple times per month and no warning.
I tethered nearly everyday for a few weeks in October, only went 1GB over my 2GB plan, and got the emails and texts telling me to add tethering plan IF I wished to continue tethering. This coincided with my Skyrocket purchase -not suggesting a connection, but coincidence maybe, or not.
They'll catch on I suppose by one using large amounts of data w/o historical habits supporting your recent surge in any given time period, APN or software left on phone, or even the possibility of CarrierIQ (suggested in another thread about tethering)

Ok. A warning first is acceptable. I dont do it often, but for those rare occasions when I need something on my laptop instead of my phone, I can tether/mobile hot spot and be ok.

On the gf's Captivate, rooted and ROMd, she got a warning that they were going to automatically put her in a tethering plan, so I'm not sure how they knew. Does that have anything to do with Carrier IQ??
Do I have to root the phone to tether without the regular menu? I tried to do it and it tells me that I don't have a plan. I would like to know if there is a possibility to change the way to create a hot spot without have to use the regular menu and not to have to root the phone.

Not any way that I know of without root. You need root to use Titanium Backup. You need TiBu to freeze tethering manager. So without root I believe you're stuck.
Is there no ROM out there that provides free tethering for ATT? I was about to install the ICS 2.3.6 from rootzwiki, but will hold off if there is something with free tether and it doesnt...
If there isnt, what is the point of getting any ROM/feature for tethering when ATT offers it anyways, I thought the whole point was to get it for free... although I guess if ATT tracks everyone's data usage, it would be hard to mask that... but with these genius programmers, I would have thought anything was possible... would be nice to get a little 20mbps wi-fi no matter I go....
It's not CarrierIQ or solely data usage that tells AT&T if you've been tethering; it's the UserAgent on your laptop/desktop browser. That's how they can tell that their data is being used through a computer browser and not a mobile browser. So even with these custom ROMs providing "free tethering", AT&T can still figure it out and send you the warning email/text, as I did in fact receive (on my Captivate). So unless these newer ROMs have figured out a different method, I would assume the same logic still applies - correct?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
This method worked for me (freezing tethering manager). But, then again, I rarely tether, and when I do, it's only for very short periods of time.
I've been tethering my skyrocket since I've rooted it and tethered my iPhone 4 before that. The worst thing that has happened so far is that i got a text message saying ive reached 5% of users Data. Nothing about tethering. I usually tether about 5 gigs a month.
Edit. I use tethering with the Alien rom.
So maybe it is by amount of MB's of transfer and not just software? I.e., if you dont use a lot, then you will get away with tethering... I wont use it often, probably like once a month when I am on the road and need my laptop and not at a wifi... then again with my crappy DSL I may be tempted to use it at home if it were invisible.

USB tether 4g never works correctly? AOSP

I've tried every AOSP Rom/Kernel variations and I can't get anything to stay USB 4g tethered for more then 5 minutes. Tshed was flying with stock CM7 USB tether and then all of the sudden doesn't work. I tried all AOSP Roms. And wired-tether 1.4 is what I use. Please help me out. I have this phone for another year and that's all I'm missing. Please help. A trick, known set up, etc maybe. Anything not to have to reset the app every 3-5 minutes or so. I can't believe I haven't seen this brought up lately? Is it only me?

Yeah u have to install software on every PC u wanna use and that kinda sucks but I still get the frequent resets and they're connection is pretty slow. I have to reset pdanet, wired-tether 1.4, etc. Every few minutes. I used watershed 1.2 cm7 stock USB tether and it worked beautifully for about a day and then nothing. So I flashed imo's kernel and stock tether doesn't work at all but I have to reset wired-tether 1.4 every 3-5 minutes or so.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using Tapatalk
I don't use USB tethering often, but when I do, the built in version always works perfectly. Tried it on OMFGB, liquid AOSP, and workshed CM7. An older version of Imo's kernel (version 4 I think) supports USB tethering.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I use easy tether and have no issues. For wifi tether I use opengarden (faster than USB tether) don't have issues with either.
And its only when I try to use 4G. 3G will stay tethered all day long if i let it but its just way to slow. I usually get 15-20 Mbps down with USB tether 4g. Thats fast as hell. I wish I had a little Porto WiFi adapter for my work PC's. Cuz yeah when I wifi tether my AOKP TouchPad I dont have this problem.
There may be something wrong specifically with his ROM. I have USB Tethering working fine on my Sense-based ROM, but I tried his and it would work for 15 seconds and stop working, then never reconnect. I tried having something persistently connected to internet on my phone but that didn't help either.
I use the ClockworkMod Tether. Works on every ROM I've tried.
I was hoping I wasn't gonna have to resort to sense but I might have
to. I need this to just work. No installer PC ware

Ive tried my Phenom2 x6 and 2 Diff. Core 2 Duo's (that's just my House).
A few Newer laptops. Wifi tether worked no problem, just alot slower then straight USB (when it works).
There were a few at work I tried and No good either.
Back when I first started bringing up this issue (Sept.) I was told It was a known 4g issue (By a great Dev who has since moved to the Razor, hint hint) and that's why there is no problem with 3 g tethering at all. Just wondering If someone had a set up that completely works with out having to reset every 5 Min or so. I think I had good Luck with ThunderShed 1.3 this weekend. I fell asleep FTPing some stuff from my friend (good size) and It was finished when I woke up. That's a good sign so far. I just need one person to see this thread that has the perfect setup for 4G USB Tethering, 24/7 if need be. It would be great to know.

I always just used the built in wired tether with cm7. I had an issue once where it would drop in and out, but after doing a total reset and reloading cm7 once again, it was fine. I also don't use the DNS with the phone. I switch my DNS on my PC to be layer3 DNS (4.2.2.1 to 4.2.2.6). DNS is allegedly one of the ways they can track what device the transfer is coming from.

Might also try disabling IPv6 and anything else not needed on the connection as it won't actually tether through it anyways. It could be causing a conflict somehow

So you are running which cm7. I am now running TShed 1.3 and stock tether was great for about 20 minutes. Then just stopped. So turned off tether reset mobile data and 3g 4g. Nothing. Not even wired 1.4 works. Rebooted a few times, I've been at this for bout an hour now and still nothing. Not even wired 1.4. So I switched from auto to 4.2.2.1-4.2.2.6 DNS. Thanks for that bit of info. Now do I have to do that every time? Anyway I'm frigging stuck here and I hear all these people's are working fine.

How do I get my USB tether settings to stick on my Win7 Ultimate x64 every time I start my tether instead of it thinking its a brand new connection every time? I got ThunderShed 1.3(stock kernel) installed now and the stock tether isn't working but the wired-tether 1.4 is working great after a couple resets. It must have stuck for a few hours until I shut it off. That's great considering how bad of a time Ive been having.

I got ThunderShed 1.3(stock kernel) installed now and the stock tether isn't working but the wired-tether 1.4 is working great after a couple resets. It must have stuck for a few hours until I shut it off. That's great considering how bad of a time Ive been having.

Now do you see how that "Thanks" button works? yareally is really trying to help me and has helped some, so I have hit the "Thanks".
That's how the "Thanks" button works.

Not sure why it keeps changing your connection number. It's never done that to me unless I've flashed a new ROM or something when I've used it on windows 7. Turning off and turning back on your wifi device might also do it (the one attached to your PC).

tethering on fp5?

Has anyone gotten wifi tether to work on fp5? On 3.1 pre 12 (the one that worked perfectly before) my computer can see the network but it says limited access when I try to use it. On the latest one in the play store my computer can't even see the network and on the phone it says "tethering started with issues" in a toast notification.
So far I haven't had any problems with FoxFi. Computer picks it up and connects automatically.
Tweaked out on Circuitry
Had a hot boot when I turned it off but it worked fine

So far I found that tethering is nearly worthless on FP5. FoxFi won't allow me to connect the computer. Wifi tether will hot reboot when stopping sometimes. It will also actually spit errors and basically bork the wifi driver when restarting-- reboot required to fix it. Additionally, when it does "work", data stops periodically (likely sleep state issue-- which is probably a kernel issue) and only resumes when the turn the screen on. I thought about trying to find an app that prevents the phone from sleeping. This happens on the beta2-2 as well as pre12.
My nerd-rage got the best of me and I loaded up Froyo. No problems there. I have a CWM of Gummycharged Froyo and Tweaked3.0 and Tweaked 2.0, so far no issues restoring.
Tweaked 2.0 gave me the same issues as Tweaked 3.0.
I am using FP5 radios on Froyo with no tether issues.
This is absolutely not knocking on how great Tweaked is, it's just that something is preventing proper wifi tether.
Do you have disable wakelock unchecked?

I installed and tried out FoxFi. It works and it shuts down ok. The weird thing is I now have the native mobile hotspot icon in my status bar and in the notification pulldown. If I tap it in pulldown it takes me to Mobile Hotspot settings and there it shows itself to be shut off. Is there a process still turned on that I don't know about? I turned off FoxFi in Task Manager and tried to find Mobile Hotspot in Running Processes and Titanium. I found nothing by that name. Maybe there's another name for it.
I'm about to try rebooting the phone but I was hoping to find a way to shut this off without it.
Update: Rebooting does shut it off. Is there something I could freeze in Titanium to keep this from happening again?
Update 2: Looking through Titanium there are 2 Wi-Fi Access Points. One is labeled 101 and the other is XML. Might one or both of these be the culprit? Can I freeze one or both of them?
Ok Titanium won't freeze either of them.
Update 3: I think I know what I did wrong. I think I switched the computer to another connection without turning off FoxFi first. So it appears to work good for me. I don't think FP5 causes the issue we're talking about here.
I've used PDANet for a wired connection too. It works great. The problem there is they won't let you use it for secure sights without paying for it. They want $15.95. I'm not willing to pay that much for it.

It sounds to me like you are trying to mix and match kernels and roms. If you want your phone to work right you need to be on FP5 straight across the board. FP5 stock absolutely smokes everything that came before. Even FP1 PB&J on Ext4 is a dog compared to it. Then you run Tweaked 3.0 on top of that and you have a smooth, problem free phone. At least I do.

Disable wakelock seems to keep the display on, and I don't want to burn out the screen. That does keep the connection mostly stable, but I still have issues with hot reboots and not being able to start and stop the and restart the service properly.
In Froyo (and EP4D, I believe) wakelock can be disabled and tether works flawlessly.
Another issue I noticed is that on FP1 and FP5, uploads on the phone work fine, but uploads over tether will pretty much kill the connection until enough time is given without uploading data.
@stueycaster
I noticed that mobile hotspot icon as well with FoxFi, but I never could get data through, even though I was connected to WiFi. I haven't had issues with PDANet, but yeah it costs money, and it is lame to be wired.
My issue with the Mobile Hotspot icon was that it stayed on after I'd shut off FoxFi. It didn't stay on as long as I shut down Foxfi before I switched my computer to another connection. The first time I switched it then shut down FoxFi after and the icon got stuck on. It went away with a reboot. FoxFi worked great for me. I even got 13MBps download speeds through it according to Speakeasy.
Actually I don't think of a wired connection as lame at all. If there's a choice between wired and wireless I'll choose a wire every time. It's secure. I almost lost my bank numbers to a thieving internet asshole once and now I'm very careful.

I've tried the most recent two PBJ kernel with Tweaked 2.0 and the stock FP5 kernel with Tweaked 3.0. Same thing. As I recall, Imoseyon 4.0 kernel works on EP4D with tether just fine. I've had better luck with Froyo though, but that is anecdotal evidence. I've noticed improvements with each newer baseband version no matter what ROM/kernel I'm on. I am nearly certain that baseband is free of dependencies of ROM/kernel.

Wireless is the way to go for me, then I can place the phone for optimal reception. With access control and WPA2 of Wifi tether, I don't see how anyone would be able to join your network. If you connect to some random wifi network, then you'll want to be cautious that someone isn't arp spoofing or packet sniffing.
I haven't seen an app that beats wifi tether, the customization is much better than anything else I've tried. I know there is a problem with FP5 base or the FP5 kernel with wifi tether. I just don't have the knowledge to troubleshoot it.
Thanks for the heads up on this. Runs perfect on my stock ROM.
