Only posting this because I haven't seen it in the few posts up for our Skyrockets.
After rooting, I got android's built in wifi hotspot working by simply freezing the system app "TetheringManager" in Titanium Backup.
Hope it helps anyone having issues.

Is this any different than tethering from a custom ROM once the AT&T config is removed? I've been tethering on my Captivate for well over a year now and this seems to function identically.

Yea its the same, Devs usually take out the teathering manager on there roms
All you need is a Widget that turns on tethering...so you don't have to click so many buttons to turn it on!
I like the Hotspot Widget.

Using Alien #4 on Motorola Atrix, I would tether w/o plan maybe a couple times per month and no warning.
I tethered nearly everyday for a few weeks in October, only went 1GB over my 2GB plan, and got the emails and texts telling me to add tethering plan IF I wished to continue tethering. This coincided with my Skyrocket purchase -not suggesting a connection, but coincidence maybe, or not.
They'll catch on I suppose by one using large amounts of data w/o historical habits supporting your recent surge in any given time period, APN or software left on phone, or even the possibility of CarrierIQ (suggested in another thread about tethering)

Ok. A warning first is acceptable. I dont do it often, but for those rare occasions when I need something on my laptop instead of my phone, I can tether/mobile hot spot and be ok.

On the gf's Captivate, rooted and ROMd, she got a warning that they were going to automatically put her in a tethering plan, so I'm not sure how they knew. Does that have anything to do with Carrier IQ??
Do I have to root the phone to tether without the regular menu? I tried to do it and it tells me that I don't have a plan. I would like to know if there is a possibility to change the way to create a hot spot without have to use the regular menu and not to have to root the phone.

Not any way that I know of without root. You need root to use Titanium Backup. You need TiBu to freeze tethering manager. So without root I believe you're stuck.
Is there no ROM out there that provides free tethering for ATT? I was about to install the ICS 2.3.6 from rootzwiki, but will hold off if there is something with free tether and it doesnt...
If there isnt, what is the point of getting any ROM/feature for tethering when ATT offers it anyways, I thought the whole point was to get it for free... although I guess if ATT tracks everyone's data usage, it would be hard to mask that... but with these genius programmers, I would have thought anything was possible... would be nice to get a little 20mbps wi-fi no matter I go....
It's not CarrierIQ or solely data usage that tells AT&T if you've been tethering; it's the UserAgent on your laptop/desktop browser. That's how they can tell that their data is being used through a computer browser and not a mobile browser. So even with these custom ROMs providing "free tethering", AT&T can still figure it out and send you the warning email/text, as I did in fact receive (on my Captivate). So unless these newer ROMs have figured out a different method, I would assume the same logic still applies - correct?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
This method worked for me (freezing tethering manager). But, then again, I rarely tether, and when I do, it's only for very short periods of time.
I've been tethering my skyrocket since I've rooted it and tethered my iPhone 4 before that. The worst thing that has happened so far is that i got a text message saying ive reached 5% of users Data. Nothing about tethering. I usually tether about 5 gigs a month.
Edit. I use tethering with the Alien rom.
So maybe it is by amount of MB's of transfer and not just software? I.e., if you dont use a lot, then you will get away with tethering... I wont use it often, probably like once a month when I am on the road and need my laptop and not at a wifi... then again with my crappy DSL I may be tempted to use it at home if it were invisible.

With Wifi Tethering I get 1.5 down and about .250k up. I tried uninstalling / reinstalling MobileAP and it did not make a difference. Is there a setting that is capping the speed with MobileAP?

Probably caused by youe wi-fi tethering app. That one is a biggest piece of crap. It hook deep into the android os layers and crashes a lot as well. So, it won't supprise me that it will affect your mobile AP performance.

It's not the wi-fi tethering app but a that's a good guess. I mentioned on my original post that I tried it with that software uninstalled.
Here's where it gets weird. I recently got a new captivate - my new one just died, no power at all. The first thing I did with the replacement phone was put cognition. I tried mobile AP and I'm getting the same results.
Btw I had no problem with the wi-fi tethering. I'm a senior technician so I'm know what I'm doing for the most part - lol.
Are you talking about bytes or bits?
i would flash to stock using odin, something must be conflicting with your mobileap.
with mobileAP, ive gotten 2000/400

Uninstall that wi-fi tethering app may not remove it completely from the phone. For a while my phone will give me a warning everytime I use USB debug mode saying that Internet Tethering will not work after I already uninstalled the wi-fi tethering app. I flashed to a new ROM and this insanity stopped.
Did you fix it?
I am having same issue.
I already did a hard rest, wipe. And still the same thing
I'm having this problem as well.
I never found a fix. I gave up and use wifi tethering. Abvously it's not conflicting with any other programs if we hard reset the phone and started fresh.
The people that posted that their's work must be connected to their wireless router - lol.
Update:
I tried a few phones and different ROM's including Froyo. I've also tried different modems all have failed with mobileAP with the same exact test results.
I have a feeling the users that are on the ATT network are getting the same results as mine.
Hi Guys,
In the last three days I've learned how to root my captivate, side-load apps, installed barnacle and wifi tether, all in the hopes of using my TF while on the road with my Captivate.
Unfortunately I cant get BT or Ad Hoc tethering to work.
I get the paired but not connected error when using BT
My TF is 8.2.3.13 so I can't root (without downgrading to 8.2.3.9 which I'm kind of afraid to do).
Does anyone know if I need to install a custom rom on my captivate in order to get the BT to tether?
I've probably read 100 threads in hopes of getting this to work, but at this point I might have to return the TF and get an ipad (yuck) just to get some connectivity for working on the road.
Any suggestions would be very very appreciated.
Regards,
wunshot
I'm assuming you want to use internet from your phone to tether to the tablet correct? Installing a custom rom is one way of achieving this. I use cognition rom which comes with the ability to tether through wifi. You need to activate that on the phone and have the tablet connect to the phone's wifi network.
I'm not sure if you were doing this but you cannot create an ad hoc network on the tablet and connect the phone to it to tether. The phone has to be the host and the tablet the client.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You don't want bluetooth. SirSid is on the right track suggesting the custom ROM although there are other ways that might not be as simple.
You want to turn on Mobile AP (Access Point) which turns your Cappy into a wifi hotspot and you're good to go. Go check the Captivate forums on how to achieve Mobile AP without much trouble. If you try to use it on a stock froyo cappy it will warn you about needing a tethering plan with ATT, you can easily remove the plan check using TiBu and it's all spelled out in the Cappy forums.

I use Captivate all the time and I can turn on the mobile hotspot and have my TF connect to it.
Atleast I'm not aware of being able to do BT tethering on a Captivate. I'm interested to know, if its even possible. Lets post a thread on the Captivate forum.
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, i plan on using my phone as the wifi host. I will give that cognition rom a shot. Im assuming the cognition rom creates the wifi network using infrastructure rather than ad hoc...is that the case?

Have no idea, I know it just works, it's actually a part of Android since Froyo, it just needs to be enabled and/or not checked if you don't have a tether plan.
I think cognition just uses the defualt android AP app. It creates the network in infrastructure mode if I remember right.
In any case, it just works
(Its located in Settings >> Wireless and network >> Mobile AP)
It supports bluetooth tethering as well, but the tablet would need to recognize it as a bluetooth modem. I have not tried that yet. Using a usb tether would probably be best if it works however. Using wifi tether drains battery faster than than my car charger can charge my phone. I still manage to loose battery even when its plugged in.
Sweet...I'll install cognition when I get home and see where I stand. Thanks for the advice...I'll updater you in a few hours with my results
OP, I have a rooted cappy with firefly rom on it. Super easy to do and its stable and allows for wifi hot spot without stupid ATT finding out you are tethering.
http://www phoenix-hq com/firefly/
It is a legit stable rom. I am able to wifi tether easily with my TF, no problems.
I'm on a stock froyo captivate Mobile AP works fine for tethering, can't figure out bluetooth. I tried for a couple of hours but gave it up Mobile AP works great, although I hear bluetooth saves battery?
EDIT: sorry it's a rogers captivate, i believe US is still on 2.1 nvm!

I don't understand why your getting into the Ad-hoc thing. Any rooted ROM you install on the Captivate, you can make your phone a Wifi hotspot via Mobile AP settings. That would create a Wifi network from the phone, and you can connect to that network in the TF.

Hey guys, i need some clarification on the data throttle removal, is it only for the stock rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052064 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051616, im currently running Bionix2, if it is compatiable can someone guide me with this, ive already done a nandroid i just want to know if this will work before i go messing with the system settings. Thanks
it does not work
someone correct me if im wrong but i believe the data throttling hack doesnt work at all on any rom.
It doesn't work. Even on stock it didn't work.
Won't work. Back in the G2 forums we had a hack that worked until Tmo wised up. They've now implemented security that is on their side of the equation and nothing we can do will affect that.
I just came from the Vibrant, don't know what's different, maybe the 3g instead of 4g but I beat the throttle every month. If you are being throttled on the g2x, does it add a file to system/data called throttle? I always deleted that, connected to an ad hoc wifi, started downloading ONE big file like a rom, then drove away from the wifi spot (always used a Panera Bread) when data switched back from wifi to 3g throttling never returned. Worked every time.

Need some help.* I have a 4G Xoom with a 1GB data plan, so when I am away from the house, I tether it to myHTC Thundernbolt, which I have an unlimited tethering plan for.*
The problem I am having is this.* The devices stay connected just fine, but data thruput is spotty.* Little things, like emails, GTalk, etc gothrough just fine.* However things like web surfing hang.* I will gettwoor three pagesok, but then I go to a page and it hangs while loading the page between 1/3 and 1/2the way through the page.
Here is the info.*
Xoom is rooted, but stock.* Issue is pre and post root, pre and post 4G upgrade, and a couple of factory resets.* Pre and post update to 3.2.2 build HLK75. Connects fine on my network at home, and others like at resturaunts.* I've forgotten the network, etc... I have tried multiple browsers too. Happens with stock browser, Dolphin HD, Dolphin for Pad, and Opera. (I hate Opera) No other data issues on the Xoom. WiFi at home is smooth as butter, so is the 4G when I do turn it on.
The Thunderbolt.* Stock and unrooted.* Happens pre and post update to 2.3.4.* I have done factory reset, set the hotspot back to standar, changed channels, security, etc....* Also, the hotspot is set to always be on, not to time out. No data issues on the phone.
It is annoying to constantly not be able to use the net when aeay from the house. Help, please. Just let me know if you need more info. One last thing. It doesn't matter where I try it at. Hotspot at home (testing it) at work, or out other places. Also, I have tethered my laptop to the phone with no problems multiple times.
Thanks....
Sorry for the formatting and astriks, don't know how that happened.
what app are you using to tether have you tried any others like easy tether?
I am using the stock mobile hotspot app on the Thunderbolt. I have the unlimited tethering feature. Haven't tried another app, since I am paying to have the ability
After several days of testing, etc.... I think I have figured it out. Happens when the screen on the Thunderbolt times out. At that point, the hot spot stops responding. I checked and have it set for Always On, and tested the other two time frames there. Nothing changed. Guess I should call tech and try a CLNR.

I use Barnacle with my TB to tether both my Xoom and Nook Color with no problems. Have used Wireless Tether but prefer Barnacle for no particular reason.
Your the second to say something about a different app. I looked on the market, and all require root access. Haven't rooted yet.
Interesting development, after doing everything I could think of, I turned off the security as a last ditch effort. Goes against everything security wise, but..... It seems to make the difference.still a little latency, but it works.

You don't have to root your Xoom, you run the wifi tethering program on your Thunderbolt which does have to be rooted.
Sorry, I meant the Thunderbolt being rooted. The Xoom is, my Thunderbolt isn't. If I can't get this resolved any other way, I will root it. Going to call tomorrow and see if I can get it replaced and try a different unit first.

Now realize that I really should have posted this up in the HTC Thunderbolt area. It's not a Xoom issue, but a Thunderbolt issue.

Is there anyway to stop the hotspot from turning off automatically? When I lose data for any reason with the hotspot on, I get this message: "unable to connect to data network, turning off hotspot".
I have a rooted S6 edge running Renegade ROM 6.0.1 with Xposed framework installed. I searched Xposed for a module but can't find one. I also searched Google and XDA but cannot find an answer.
In general I really find it annoying when the messages pop up at all when turning on or off the hotspot, wifi, etc... I would much prefer to change the settings myself without any intervention by the phone. The main problem I have is when using my phone as a hotspot in my car to play something on my in-dash Android car stereo and I get a phone call or a hit a data deadspot, the hotspot will turn off. I really don't like having to turn it back on after every interruption.
Please let me know if any of you have a solution for this.
Thanks!!!
For some reason, pardon me I'm buzzed. I think it has to do with the s6 not having 2 radios or something. My old HTC m7 handled data and phone and whatnot flawlessly. It had 2 radios. I dunno I'm buzzed I could be wrong
Edit: I just remember being able to tether my hotspot and still take phone calls no issue on my m7. Now it's me getting mad at my girlfriend for calling every 5 seconds when I'm trying to download something.
Edit 2: terrible design idea. Sacrifice the functionality of 2 radios for slim design.. I want data and phone at the same time.
Edit 3: Even now I still talk to someone, "hold on let me look it up....
.
Oh wait, that was my old phone."
OK now I'm angry

I know what you're referring to but this is a little different issue. I know that back on my Galaxy S4 I could have data going at the same time as phone calls, but beginning with the Galaxy S5 they changed it (I believe I read somewhere it had to do with Sprint Spark). However, on the S5 I could still have my hotspot on while taking/making a phone call and the hotspot would remain on just without actual internet data until my phone call was over then data through the internet would resume.
BUT on my S6 Edge the phone actually turns the hotspot off on any phone activity or even losing data for a moment (like driving though a dead zone). I would like my hotspot to remain on whether or not my internet data is happening. It's possible that back on my S5 it was modded as part of a custom ROM but at least it behaved the way I prefer.
I have been looking at both Tasker and Xposed but so far no luck in preventing the hotspot from being turned off.
I hate not being able to change a setting that automatically disables the hotspot when no network is detected. Almost makes it feel like an ifone.
Well maybe not that bad.
I've been digging around for a 3rd party app that might alleviate the issue, but wifi apps (or at least working ones, ..I miss the old wifi tether 3.3-beta2) seem few and far between these days. Has anyone had any success with other apps or is it just something we'll have to suffer through for the foreseeable future?
I have a solution that i used that is actually how i got hotspot to work on stock. If you need to know PM me and i will explain. Idk how it came to stop that message but it does allow me to keep it from turning off the hotspot. If it has been 10m though it may do it but that is a good bit of time to get back out of a deadzone too.

I never tried getting it to work on stock, nor have I seen evidence that it could. For me, Rooting is usually step #1 in getting a phone anyhow. The samsung app Good Lock allows toggle control due to being a systemui update. Credit for that discovery goes to pickles.
