[Q] does the wifi only transformer have gps - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive noticed during primes boot up screen there is a gps device being provisioned with a bus number, but i cant seem to get gps to work at all... does the wifi only version have gps and if not what is this device found by the boot screen...
and if there is a device but its locked out what are the chances of being able to hack it to operate?

YES both the Standard and the Prime have a GPS. But the Primes GPS is basically null and void. It doesn't work. Its a hardware flaw. no software patch can fix it.

im using the tf101 b70 and prime rom i should have been more specific... so the tf101 wifi only does have gps... sweet! throw in 3g huawei dongle support and im set
woo got the gps test app to show up, thats awesome... but the reception seems weak, is there anywhere to plug in a gps antennae (or wifi antenna while im asking) like there is sometimes on phones? or anything i can do to boost the reception and or the quality of it

make sure it has direct view of the satellites. and you might want to download a GPS app to make sure that you have good signal.

Download "GPS Status" from the market. Tap the menu button, then hit tools and then "Manage A-GPS State". Clear the GPS history and redownload, then restart your tab. If that doesn't work, PM me.

Since you posted this in the forum for the original transformer, I must just say that the TF101-B1 I have, has the best GPS I've ever used. Beats the phones I've used and even a friends dedicated GPS module.
The Prime on the ther hand, I don't expect very much out of it's GPS.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

I can swear to transformers real GPS took it out one day (no wifi) and it was able to show me my exacty location for as long as i used it in google maps

That's what really shocked me tbh. Over Thanksgiving I was out of state and my phones AGPS crapped out the moment I hit the boarder, with WiFi and 3G open. Sitting in a house where I couldn't even get cellular signal for miles, my TF101 was able to tell me exactly where the hell I was standing....with no WiFi connection and being 300 miles from home/cached territories.
Guess the Prime will be worse than my old phone but heck, the original TF101 is a nice GPS.

There was someone complaining in another thread about the GPS in the transformer,
He was comparing another sitting side by side.. and I think he was unhappy with the time frames to lock in..
I use my alot around China.. and in the programs thread have directed a few to a modded google maps for those that are locked in behind firewalls.. ([APP MOD] Google Maps 6.0.3)

I have also used this trick..
[Trick] Speed Up Satelite Fix for GPS on Android
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239713
and it is working wonders for timeframes where I am to hook in..
Might help anyone that is having troubles..

There is a problem with GPS Status. The gps signal drops when you go to another program or to the home screen. I'll open GPS Status first to get signal then go & open Google Maps. Google Maps can't find my location right away because there is no gps signal.

Yes, my TF101 B80 does have a working GPS.

GPS patch

Hi. All. My TP2 has not arrived yet, but cruising another forum, I stumbled across this link. I know it's in the asia site, but anyone have any insight as to whether it applies to CDMA phones?
http://www.htc.com/asia/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=250&act=sd&cat=all
Odd. My GPS is working wonders compared to my XV6800 so I don't think I'd need a patch personally.
GPS is fantastic on my Verizon pro2. 3rd party software all day long HUGE difference from my xv6900(vogue). No need for a patch.......
I haven't really tested "lag" when driving, but signal locks have been within a couple of seconds every time I've used it (even after a soft reset - so "cold" start).
Yes odd indeed. I got my TP2 up and running today and it locks on very quickly and in areas where my XV6800 could not. Maybe Verizon actually rolled problems that cropped up from the T-Mobile version into the CDMA version? Who knows.
anyone using third party, what's the accuracy that the radio is getting? like within 5,10,20 meters..

I agree as far as not needing a patch. From my experience with Google maps this morning, I would say anywhere from 5 to 10 meters. I was parked on the corner and google maps showed me that I was slightly into the intersection. I also locked on very quickly. I just had to set google maps manually to com4 and 4800 baud rate then config the gps to give my location always instead of just with 911 and it locked on like a charm. I'm gonna test Garmin & Tomtom this afternoon to see if they have to be set manually as well.
UPDATE: I was also able to successfully run Tomtom & Garmin without any manual configuration. All is well with my TP2. I could not be happier. Definitely an awesome device. The only thing that could make it better is a custom rom. I know it takes time so I will wait patiently.

That patch is actually a Radio ROM, it's for GSM only.
Has anyone got their Verizon TP2 to work with Garmin Mobile XT? I do have it enabled for devices other than 911. I've been playing with this for about 7+ hours now and no matter what I do, I can get XT to find the GPS. Iv'e tried using different COM settings and just about every permutation of the "External GPS" settings under the settings menu. No matter what I do, it won't find my GPS. If you do have it working, please post your exact settings for GPS, both within XT and also in settings for the device.
Thanks much,
J.
Yeah - I've got it working. Just installed GarminXT and it started working right away - no custom settings or anything.
You have Garmin updated to the latest version 5.00.20?
gps
how did you get the gps to work in programs like bing and google maps mine dosent.
Since we're talking about it. What is the best GPS Navigator program out there? Garmin is 99 and TomTom is 89 so they aren't cheap. Any cheaper/free alternatives that are just as good?
edit: my bad, looks like there is no tomtom software for the US and WiMo

Same here. As soon as I put my sd card from my old titan to the tp2 it asked if I wanted to install it, I click yes. It installed, and within 2 minutes I got a lock. Then it only took about 5-10 seconds to get a lock each time after that. Maybe it is the specific version you are using.
I'm using Garmin XT as well but it does have lag. The lag isn't killer but it is annoying.
I'd like to know if there is a fix for this problem. I've looked at the registry hacks and they don't seem to conclusively work.
Does anyone have a verified fix for this problem?
Have been messing around with Waze lately. It's an interesting concept, and I like the idea of everybody contributing traffic information. I'm not nearly as paranoid about annomously submitting my driving info.
On the subject of accuracy, it seems about the same as my TP, but the lock is SOOOOO FAST...
The lag is about 10 seconds. What seems to happen is that the GPS position is updated once every 10 seconds or so... On most systems it's updated at LEAST twice a second. So this is like 20 times slower then it's supposed to be... Even once a second wouldn't be so bad but a ten second update is irritating. It's not app killing really because I can just look at the map and remember the position is slow. But it's not as good as my apache (with external GPS receiver).

Do you have a big blue circle around your location? if so, you are using cell tower location tracking, not GPS. the GPS should be within about 20 meters. It works just fine for me. It actually works very well.
GPS in CDMA
Hi.. I have a HTC_TouchPro2 ROM ROM 2.01.558.7 Radio 2.21.00WV from movilnet, Venezuela. The GPS works good in GSM mode; but when i tried to make it work in CDMA mode, nothing happens. How can this be? I appreciate any help from you.
Did you run quickgps? Do you have location set to on instead of 911 in cdma mode.

No GPS fix after update to 2.3.3

Always was a dificult to get fast fix with my NS but after the update can't get at all
With Gps status App I can see the gps is seeing 1, 2 or 3 sats but never fixes.
Is anyone experiencing the same after update?
Nope 10char
Sent from my MattedBlues CM7 Nexus S from the XDA Premium app.
No GPS problem ever since i got the phone . now on 2.3.3 RC2.
No issues with GPS here.
Since 2.3.3 for me. GPS takes 1-2 minutes to lock on, even then 20 meters is best accuracy...
wasn't like this with 2.3.0 to 2.3.2

Is there any chance to be a carrier issue because it uses A-GPS?
Never experienced any GPS problems since I purchased the phone.
I´ve been doing some tests and my conclusion is that the GPS on 2.3.3 is little bit better. For me, it fix better but if in movement, it takes too long.
I use GPS test to monitor the signal... before, I was able to see (not to lock or fix) the signals in my living room. Now, inside the house never get a single satelite. But if you go outdoor, even on cloudy day (its been raining for 10 days now) in less than a minute took 8 sats and lock some seconds after.
it is obvious that if you want a real GPS, buy one...
Never had a gps problem.
i have the same problem! I Purchased my NS few days ago and this is devastating since i use gps a lot, I think if rooting will not fix this, I will sell it
Did you guys activate:

GPS lagg? ?? Never! !!!
Getting a fix with 2.3.2 was a piece of cake, very fast and accurate, now with 2.3.3 it’s an odyssey to get the first one, almost 2 minutes. Any suggestion to improve the time that gps needs to get the first fix?

not really.. the first one has to ALWAYS be on if you want location, with the first one enabled only.. it'll detect your location via towers / network
with the second one enable, its able to precisely track your location providing accuracy on the street.
3rd: turning WiFi on
turning all 3 of those on will guarantee pin point position. but usually i only have to go to at least 1st and 2nd for it. these tips were found in Google Maps
I had a slow gps lock problem when I went to 2.3.3. I flashed the radio image and my gps is working like normal now.
I tried the older radio myself last night. Got GPS fix in less than a minute. I later put kb1 or kb3 back and just takes too long to get a fix position. 1 to 2 minutes and even then its slow at updating my location on screen. Cuts out alot.

GPS problems on desire s

Hi.
I'm from Russia. Sorry for not perfect english.
I bought my HTC Desire S about 2 weeks ago on clove.co.uk.
It is cool phone but i have problems with GPS.
Applications can't show my place if i uncheck flag "Location->Use wireless networks " in phone Settings.
I tried to use Google maps, open gps tracker, Yandex maps.
Also i tried "GPS TEST". I waited 15-20 minutes. It finds 9-10 satellites, but latitude and longitude equals 0.
I tried "GPS FIX" but it also useless.
Can anyboby help me?
Is it hardware or software problem?
Thanks.
Are you outside (not in building)? From my previous experiences, I can say GPS doesn't work in buildings (or isn't that accurate).

Same thing here. I'm from Russia too. I've just bought the device, and have almost the same problems. I tested the device outside my office - still 10 minutes to get GPS locked
I have been experiencing the same issues outdoors in south west UK makes foursquare impossible

Have the same problem here
Installed "GPS Test" and it shows the strengths of the signals of the satelites.
I haven't had a value over 36 SNR but it finds about 10 satelites very fast. Then it takes 5 min to lock and it is impossible to lock if you are walking.
Is the GPS better on your devices. Would be interesting to hear values from people who don't have problems.
Hi guys...this is most probably cause by the presence of built-in A-GPS feature....due to that feature DS can no longer lock on it's own...or it means a great struggle...Locking onto GPS requires a great computing power... apparently the GPS chip in DS isn't the top product...
Hey, if you're root/S-OFF, did you try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060963 ?
I had the same issue but it's gone after restart.
Having the same issues here, this is a return the phone type fault, and no gps = key things missing from the phone.
It was hard for me to get a fix accurately but GPS Fix really helped. But definitely go outside to use it.
seems like a-gps has old data, dunno how to refresh it on it's own, but the free app "gps status" will do it if necessary. be sure you have internet access (wifi or cellular), gps is on, and start the app, it should update the a-gps data and the phone should find a fix. otherwise the gps sattelites are transmitting the same data (almanach) but very slow and it takes sometimes 15-20 minutes. the alamanachs contain the latest corrections and without them any gps device will give rubbish as output.
i cant lock gps...any suggestion?
It's always worked pretty well for me.
GPS Fix works wonders.
I have the same problem and I have tested with the HTC Hero as well with the same problem. I have been on the Orange to see if is there problem but with no luck! Trying GPSfix now! I am wondering if this is a Radio problem or a handset problem! I hope it is not a handset problem!!
Using GPS Status is saying I can lock on to 2 satellites in my room but I lose them very fast. I need to test in other places around Newport and Cardiff to see if I can get similar results.

Yes likely as aGPS pulls satellite info from your cell towers. You may still find though, as I do, that even with the best radio, you'll still need to occasionally run GPS fix every few weeks. My old desire never had this. Mine will get a lock in 2 seconds now, but for some reason if I don't use GPS for a couple of weeks, I'll be back with waiting and waiting for a lock.
I may be noticing it more because oranges 3g service in my area for months (t-mobile merger issues it seems) has been so poor that I've turned 3g off to avoid shocking battery drain and hopeless intermittent data services. I rely on wifi. Now I know why I'm not getting a good lock sometimes. I use an off line gps app as I can't rely on orange 3g to let google maps work. With 3g off I'm not pulling down the aGPS data. This GPS fix app (however it does it) solves it.

Having a HUGE GPS problem.

This is the first time I'm completely stumped.
I cannot get a lock on my GPS. No matter what ROM I put on my phone, it will not connect to the satellites. It will fix to about 3 or 4, not connect, then lose the connection to all and start over to find more fixes.
I was running CM7 when I first realized tthis problem. I have had GPS working before on that ROM. I still got the symbol in the status bar so I didn't think I needed to do he sense fix. But I did anyways. And I can't even get a lock on sense! Same issue!
I looked at the GPS file in system/etc but even at us.pool instead of north-america.pool I'm still getting the same results.
I have also tried downloading new AGPS data from GPS status and still no luck.
This also happened on the stock radio as well as the newest leaked radio.
I need my GPS. Any help is appreciated!
I am having a problem with the two newest leaked radios connecting to GPS. It will just say "searching for GPS" and never connect when trying to use navigation.
Try GPS Essentials and put a waypoint on your location. That should help. I am running the latest radio and have no problems getting a lock.

Thanks,
After downloading that it seems that the conflict is not with the GPS but with Google Maps Navigation App because I was picking up a location.
Navigation just still says "searching for GPS" and wont give me directions.
I downloaded Map Quest and that works so it has to be some sort of Google Maps thing.
I used MapQuest and it locked on my address in secs. I does try auto wfi and worked with out it. Gps must be Google issue however gps status and others haven't work. Kinda confused !

Make sure you can lock w/Navigation and not just w/Map Quest or Google Maps. The latter two use a different network than your actual GPS. When I used CM7 I found I could lock w/Maps and still not having a working/locking GPS in my navigation app.
Another test is try a weather app w/a "My Location" feature (e.g. Weather Bug) and see if it actually gives you your location or some other remote locatio.
Weather bug works fine.
So you are saying that Google Maps, Mapquest, and Weather bug use something different then the Navigation app does?
Ok so if that is the case then the newest two radio leaks that came out have conflict issues with the navigation.
I found this for a fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035665&page=2
Ok so I read through that thread, did the fix and still nada. I installed the leaked RUU and it still didnt work. The fix didnt work for everybody so maybe its just an outage in my area.
The VZW 3G and 4G updates they are working on all around the country are causing a lot of the GPS problems from what a vzw rep told me. They were working on a site 200 miles from where I live and all I could get yesterday afternoon was a 1X signal for several hours.

It definitely could be unrelated to anything on your phone. I experienced the East Texas outage several months ago, and nothing that we did ever fixed it until one day supposedly they sent engineers down and did something, and everybody's phones started working again and we never had another issue.
Wish I had a better explanation for it, but unfortunately it does seem possible for Verizon to do something with their antennas that can affect GPS. Sounds like the OP's phone is behaving just like mine was at that time. Hopefully you are in a more populated area where they will fix it more quickly than they did for us.
Try using GPS Status to clear the cache, download aGPS, etc. (there are many threads where this is described) and if that doesn't fix it, complain to Verizon and wait for them to fix it. Don't drive yourself crazy like I was for several weeks!

[Q] GPS Issues and a small rant...

Hello All,
I have a Nexus S from T-mob and the GPS is not working really. I have Android 4.0.4.; stock. When I go to my MAPS app, it will sometimes show my current location. But what's weird, is that the circle in my notification bar for my GPS does not blink. No blinking dot in the middle of the circle. Then, let's say I want directions somewhere, it will usually show those but when I want to navigate with the navigation app, it won't do turn by turn directions. It will just keep saying "searching for GPS." The circle never blinks...This is what I've done:
factory reset
clear app data
went to best buy and t-mob for help
tried GPSFIX app and this did get the dot blinking but still didn't work
I don't know if this is a software issue (maybe with ICS) or a hardware issue (I have insurance on this phone with Best Buy). I haven't tried going back to gingerbread and trying, or rooting and trying which will be my next objective if no one can help here. Any ideas? I will root again and if that doesn't work, I'll get a new phone from best buy which sucks because I've done this once already (different issue) and I have to wait a week and a half for my new phone and best buy only has a feature phone to let me borrow and so I get really annoyed. I have an old G1 but still....they should hook me up with an SII or something until I get mine back but they won't.
Now for the rant...While I was sitting at T-mob waiting to hear what their tech people on the phone were going to try (cause the rep didn't know what to do for this situation) I realized that it can suck to own a Nexus device. I doubt T-mob will ever sell one and the manager there didn't think they would. Now back to why it sucks...you don't have true support. T-mobile is not going to hand me a new phone right there or go all out to help me because they don't sell the Nexus S. They don't even have a picture of it when I go to my online profile on T-mobile.com. If it's a network problem maybe, but honestly, they don't have to help. And then best buy...well they don't even really support T-mobile too much these days anyway and they aren't specific to one carrier for me to get the true help I need. I just wish Google was a carrier and had stores or somewhere I can get immediate help. Not Google forums or me having to send off my phone through best buy. I'm glad XDA is here but then I feel bad because I don't always contribute much...Okay....done.
Thanks everyone!
Are you rooted?
I'm running stock right now. I will root soon if no one has any ideas.
try going back to gingerbread and see if it works!
I've never had problems with a stock ROM and GPS (despite ever being on 2 stock ROMs..), though a common problem for GPS woes seems to be the /system/etc/gps.conf file. Give it a new, local ntp server, let it redownload xtra.bin (either delete or use gps status or something like that). Give it an internet connection for 2 mins and all should be well.
Same thing happening to me
Hey there,
Wow, glad I found this thread! I am having the exact same issue as callison.168. The only difference that I can see is that I have had my Nexus S for a year and a half and have never had any problems with the GPS. But at the beginning of last week, the GPS just disappeared, and my phone has been looking for it ever since. The two apps that use it are Google Maps and Waze. Both provide turn-by-turn navigation, and both present with the same issue: Searching for GPS.
Now here's the kicker: my wife has the Nexus S as well (we got them at the same time) and HER PHONE ISN'T WORKING EITHER right about the same time mine stopped!
Both of our phones are stock, ICS 4.0.4, and they are not rooted. I called T-Mobile to check to see if there were any GPS outages in my area, but there were none.
Harbb, how do I go about doing what you suggested? I have GPS Status, but I don't see an option to get a new local NTP server. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I usually use fasterfix after every rom I flash, but it needs root..

You'll need root to do what i suggested above. GPS Status may also be of help just by deleting some basic data which you can probably do without root but i'm not sure on this one. GPS satellites essentially don't have any kind of outage problems we need to worry about.
One thing you can do is turn on a gps app, let it look for a signal with the GPS on and let it sit outside looking for 15 mins, or turn data on too and let it help get a signal for several minutes. Let it refresh all of the time specific GPS information sent through GPS. If data doesn't work, turn data off and try GPS only a few hours later, remember for about 15 minutes (gps signals have very low-speed data transfer speeds..).

I use maps and Waze daily and don't have this issue. There are drops of course but it reconnects. I would root and do what @harbb suggested above, about the server. This is better service and tech support than what you'll get at Best Buy.

Try the google apps: FasterFix and GPS Status. Just recalibrate/reset the GPS. This may help if it is a type of software issue. There are more issues you may want to take in mind.
Personally, I've done all of this - no luck. If I sit outside on a clear day with GPS Status running, it eventually gets a signal from ONE satellite after 10-15 minutes. The GPS icon might occasionally blink, and show "Searching for GPS" - otherwise it shows an empty GPS icon in the status bar.
It worked great until about 3 weeks ago.
edit: for what it's worth, I used michaelpeerman's One Click Return to Stock, which put stock Gingerbread back on. Immediately got a GPS lock in Google Maps, indoors even. Just flashed CM9 back on and GPS is now working.
