Dear seasoned Xda members,
I love my GT7+ and have enjoyed the versatility of the Android Os (my first device). As I carry the device around and (attempt to) use it at work the size is perfect. However, I have terrible issues with the WIFI. At home there is no issue - but I work in a hospital, and the device is only good for me if it can get WIFI.
Well... in the hospital it will connect to both the "guest" wifi and the "secure" wifi (for which my device has been setup), but in both cases the connection just "dies" after about 2 minutes. The only way to get on again it by re-booting the device.
I had hoped that all of the firmware updates would address the issue - and I have read that some routers are troublesome for the GT7+. Unfortunately I will have little control over what routers are being used.
The device is no use to me if I can't use it at work - and Im wondering if I should sell it or if ICS will resolve the Wifi issue.... I would appreciate any guidance even if its speculation.
[btw the device is entirely stock, not rooted, and using ADW instead of TW]
Cheers!
Here's samsung's ics update list.http://androidandme.com/2012/02/devices/official-samsung-android-4-0-update-list/. You'll probebly have to wait until Q2 or Q3 for ICS, unless someone ports CM9.

I guess it was my fault to get the WIFI only version thinking it would be easy to switch between networks. Seems like a bug that they should have wrinkled out before shipping a "Wifi-only" device.
In any case, if anyone is looking for another device to play with - shoot me an email (aliota [at] gmail.com)
I had the same issue prior. I bought this Tab twice and with both devices the same thing happened at work aswell. At home it was working perfect. At work any wireless connected but dropped in like 2 minutes. Very Frustrating. I was actually thinking of picking it up again assuming the issue had been fixed..

Have you tied to do a factory reset on the device and then reconfigure the wifi connections? I bounce between many wireless networks during my day and the connection is stable.
I did have a few reboots until I set the wifi to turn off with the screen and never to turn off when charging, now the device is rock solid.
I believe that once ICS is dropped there will be some custom firmwares (ROMS) available for the device. Every new device I see posts like this where there is one feature or another that is flaky, once the developers start working their wonders on it the device becomes wonderful. The biggest hold up right now for development is the WiFi driver. Based on history of other devices, eventually that will be overcome as well.

Interesting... I've tried this in the past without any luck, but will try again. I really want to keep the device because it is quite powerful and the 7" size makes it much more portable than a 10"+ tablet.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have noticed some wifi issues with mine also but they dont seem to big of a deal for what I use mine for. I would really recommend keeping it as it is duel-core, lightweight, can even fit in some pockets.
But rather you keep it or not I suppose depends what you use your tablet for mostly I suppose.

I've noticed that whenever I connect my Kaiser to my Wifi network at home, it will work for 10-15 minutes, after which it looses the connection. At this point the router itself needs to be hard-rebooted, since it can't be accessed anymore (even from a cable connection).
I had this problem with my Hermes before, but thought it was only the phone, and was hoping this would go away when I got the Kaiser.
The router is D-Link DI-524.
Anyone else have similar problems? How did you resolve them?
many many people have issues like that
only way to solve it i know is to upgrade the firmware
of the router
manufactures release updated firmware pretty often fixing bugs
and making better compatibility with newer devices
Ok... maybe I should have also asked what routers people have NOT had any problems with.
If I can find a model that seems to be rock solid, then I'd spend the $40 and get one... I just don't want to do it by trial and error.

Tested with Tomato, DD-WRT and pfsense, HTC Mogul, no issues ever. Pfsense is probably advanced for your purposes, but any Tomato-compatible router is a good choice.

Hi Everyone.
I am not a developer nor really tech savy, but I do know how to adjust a few things. Anyways, I just got my Infuse 4G, loving it so far except at my home. I have really fast internet connection and my router is new and is Cisco. My laptop, desktop and tablet all work really well. My infuse though will connect and tells me that it has a really strong wifi connection, but I can't open anything for **** such as a browser or market app. It works fine at work and at any att wifi hot spots.
Can anyone advice me on this? Sometimes though, it works fine but about 85 % of the time at home, I can't open any internet connection although it says that I am connected to wifi.
I am about 5 days close to returning this if this problem can't be resolved.
Any help will be really and greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Probably your router. If it's Linksys-branded Cisco of the "saucer" form factor - find something better. Linksys-branded Cisco hardware sucks these days.
I suggest finding a router that is supported by DD-WRT - I have always been disappointed when running routers with closed-source factory firmware.

I would think that if it works well at work and att hot spots that this would point to ot being an issue with the home router.
Have you tried resetting the router?

No, but if that was the case, my other devices shouldn't work neither no?

Some routers are buggy and don't play well with some devices.
90% of the time it's the router's fault.
Hello Friends,
I am new here and I am interested in buying HTC Desire S
But I saw here and on various other forums/websites, that there's a major WiFi signal loss problem when the device is held in Landscape Mode
So, this problem still exists? I love this phone as it's awesome and in my budget and my main usage will be by means of Wi-Fi
Kindly help
Thanks and Regards
Even though i knew that it has serious issue of poor reception and signal drop, i still bought it as i love this phone. And the answer to your question is,
Yes. it still has poor reception.
Now its up to you if you want to buy it or not.
Is it a Hardware Defect?
I have read somewhere, after FOTA update the problem is gone/rectified a bit
Anyways, I am disappointed
I never noticed a signal drop at mine, except that it lasts a little til it gets the full signal back after returning from sleep, but that's cause of my settings.
Maybe it has to do with my radio image.
You find it (and the related thread) at my signature.

The problem was reduced after the OTA, all depends if you use the phone to type when in landscape mode (something I never do) depends on your size (or the size of your hands I reckon!)
Great device!
The Wi-Fi does indeed lessen if held in a certain manner - but because I have a very strong signal from my router it never drops out completely. I imagine it could be an issue if your base signal is low to start with.

Welcome to XDA! Yes I'd agree with previous post. Only really an issue if your router is far away to begin with. And being aware of the cause (covering the camera lens area with your hand) means that in a vast majority of cases, you shouldn't have any serious issues with signal drop.
It's a fantastic phone. Since buying mine nearly six months ago I've not had a single instance where I've had a signal drop out whilst I've been trying to use WiFi. You have to TRY to make it drop out in my experience.
Hey friends
Thanks a lot for all your responses
Just wanted to show you this video from YouTube: www . youtube . com / watch?v=qd7XdLmAFUo - See how that guy is holding the phone in Landscape Mode
I don't think, I am (rather say no one is) going to hold the phone in that way while using it on Wi-Fi
Anyways I have following questions:
1. What happens if the phone is lying on Table which is made from either of wood/metal? Will it get disconnected from Wi-Fi
2. HTC Desires S got Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0 updates in UK and these updates are getting displayed as a pop-up notifications and are completely dependent on Mobile Operator one is using.
So, do you know/think, in India (Vodafone/AirTel), HTC gives updates by means of Network Operators. Or we have to install the Updates manually after hunting for them
Once cleared, I will jump and order the Phone online
Thanks a lot
P.S. I am new to Android

1. Never noticed any problems.
2. Maybe, but when I think no one could say^^ But if you take a look at the development section there are many sense 3 and also some sense 3.5 roms based on 2.3.5, if you don't want to wait till it's official release. Without sense you could also get Android 2.3.7 within cyanogen^^
All newcomers are welcome, there are many guids to help you getting started
Swyped from my Desire S
Definetly have problems here.
I have compared it to my other devices, and the desire s has the weakest signal, when far away from the router. It's a realy pain when im upstairs and want to use WiFi.
It also drops a bit when I cover it up with my hand.
The 'fixes' they have around, and built into custom kernels don't seem to work for me either
It's a real pain for me everytime I lose signal and have to reconnect!
It's a shame for me, but other than that I highly highly recommend this phone! It is really good!

It's strange, I get a good Wi-Fi signal anywhere in the house with no problems.
If I cover the plastic top rear panel of the phone with my hand, the signal strength does go down a bit, but it's never been a problem.
Maybe it's like the GPS - I find that the case I bought degrades my GPS reception, yet other people with the same type of case seem to experience no problems.
Overall though, I like this phone despite the imperfections. I don't regret buying it.
Its a very good phone for the price.
India does not have a FOTA update yet but to install custom roms or sense 3.0 you will have to root your phone.
As far as wi-fi goes i have had slight problems with the device but it was solved by using the wi-fi fix and also by custom kernels so go ahead!
I tried to make my phone lose wifi signal but only when i really cover up every part of the back of the phone i see some difference.
But when using normal i never experience any loss.

I am bit reluctant in buying this device as my main work is from Wi-Fi and apart from my home I will be using Wi-Fi at some places where the router is kept in upper floor or far away
Anyways, I am considering buying Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001 as it's in my budget and I can't afford SGS2 or other mobile phones which comes in price range after SGS+ and Desire S
I can live without flash and plastic body
Though I need expert advice/suggestion from Gurus/Masters here: Should I buy SGS+?

As title says, I went to the theatre today and realized I still had 5 bars of WiFi when I was 20KM away from home, was this a one time glitch or is it a known problem?
sounds familiar....
hey there,
I'm down here in New Zealand with a both versions of device, X & XL
my XL has the problem you speak about.
When i leave my house, it takes for ever to disconnect, pain of course because the 3G or 4G wont flip on while it thinks it is still on wifi.
When i return to my home/SSID the device takes for ever to reconnect, if it even does. i go to the wifi settings, and the connection initiation is just cycling, end attempts to connect, over and over.
I've thought i had fix it once before, by installing a new RUU. I was on RUU 1.77.708.3 Asia, could only find 1.77.708.2.
this seemed to fix disconnection on departure problem, but the cycling and hunting continued when i returned.
I have since found that this must be linked to the bluetooth. I say this because while the wifi is hunting/cycling i flip off the bluetooth and the wifi reconnects within seconds. I tested this more and with bluetooth disabled i have no wifi problems at all, but with bluetooth on, its gives my problems.
The second issue is the bluetooth its self. unlike my flawless desireHD, i can only stream music to my car head-deck, when i get a phone call, the music cuts out like it should, but the phone audio doesn't happen, been like that from the get go. wifi was a problem all the time because this dodgy bluetooth was on all the time so i could listen to music in the car and hopefully one day take calls in the car also.
well i have good news for me, today i flashed CleanROM.3.Standard .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
Today for the first time I can take calls over bluetooth in the car. this is good news because i was certain this was a hardware issue, even it it is, i am confident it can be resolved in the software now.
I'll do a few drive-by's my house tonight to test this wifi, see if that got resolved also. I'll let you know the result later.
I tell you all this in-case our issues are the same, it might save you some time... maybe.
good luck with, and check that bluetooth theory because i'm dying to know if its a common problem.
Cheers
Thank you for that very detailed post.
I also have bluetooth running (connected) to my car and it works flawlessly but it may be a cause for the WiFI staying connected as well. I will turn it off and see how it goes as the week progresses and keep this updated as well.
I would also like to flash clean rom but I am using the Rogers variant so I am worried it might not be compatible.

I did those drive-by's......
Me again...
I did those drive-by's of my house, unfortunately there is no joy for me, still the WiFi behaves the same as before.
Its funny, down here we have assumed that the X is the same as the XL apart from the cpu. But in reality they are two completely different machines.
So I turned off Bluetooth and the problem does not occur anymore, WiFi disconnects as needed but it is obviously not a permanent fix. Another problem is the WiFi being on and off with 5 bars swapping between 4G and WiFi...
CleanROM again......
OK, I was doing some more reading and have since found that the developer of CleanROM has released a GSM patch so the hotspot on his ROMs now work.
You might remember i said earlier in this thread that CleanROM.3 worked best for me but the hotspot didn't work so i couldn't use it.
Now i have CleanROM installed again, Hotspot works, bluetooth both Audio & Phone work, and the WiFi at this stage seems to be doing what it should without having to manually toggle the bluetooth on and off. No apparent bugs to report at this stage.
Software Info on phone says this version is built around 1.29.728.12. I don't know if that means all ICS version of that number are good or not, but again its a place to start. Its looking like some versions have the issue and some don't, this re-assures me that it can be resolved within the software. I don't mind testing this stuff, as long as the developers don't mind developing it, and its a good learning curve.... its all good.
Check this CleanROM work out, it could be your answer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655011
I'll check back in in a day or so and update you on my WiFi situation.
Cheers!
Thanks again for all your research and assistance.
I have the Rogers variant, should be no problem flashing it to CleanROM correct? Also, for each new CleanROM update, I would have to wipe and flash again? Seems troublesome.
Can you advise on the process required to flash the ROM? I am new to Android and the steps in the thread is not as comprehensive.
Many thanks.
hi there, show you how to load roms, thats a big job for me....
...I'm new to this myself, but i know a tutorial that will save me a ton of typing.
you need to do 2 things first, before flashing roms.
1,Unlock your bootloader
2,Install clockworkmod
have a look at this ,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647272
Study this thread, very helpfull. He explains how to install clockworkmod on your device, once you have that done you are 80% there, and you only have to do this process once, once done, flashing roms will always be the last 20%, you never do this again.
Infact flashing roms and backing up your own rom is a very simply task. the commands are on a list, just choose them as you go. To backup, wipe, and flash a new rom takes me less than 10 minutes.
Go to you tube and look at this, this shows you how Clockworkmod works.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOQEmQYFEeY
dont be freaked out, take it step by step, you'll be fine.
I also started this thread, regarding working roms for this wifi issue
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27585586#post27585586
no one has replyed yet, but it might yeild helpfull info later on perhaps
Thanks, I will do this shortly. Will unlocking the bootloader or doing any of the aforementioned steps give me the tampered signature?
Yes
yes, your phone will be marked.
Boot loader will be marked "Unlocked" , even if you relock it, its just gonna say "relocked" . nothing you can do about that.
The boot loader will also say "tampered" if you update the rom, but that msg dissappears completely if you update the phone via an RUU.exe
Can this hurt me with regards to warranty requests? I know I can remove the tampered status by flashing a stock ROM but I am concerned re: bootloader.
I've been trying to tether a tf700 to my S3's 4g connection while at my job for about two weeks now. The problem is after a little bit of time connected, the wifi tether will drop the tab. The connection on the tab will cycle between connecting, obtaining IP address and saved. I tried another device, a phone, to see if it was the S3 or the tab and it did the same thing, indicating a problem with the S3. Note: this issue has only come up when tethering at my job. I have not seen it happen at my house, though it may be possible.
I have tried several roms including stock, JellyWiz, CleanROM and others with the same result. I followed the procedure to return the phone to vzw warranty service as a way to wipe the phone and return it to stock settings. Running Foxfi, I still had the issue.
I got a warranty replacement S3 and have left it unrooted on stock (HE based rom). Using Foxfi I was able to tether successfully for hours. It's been nice. This leads me to think of two possibilities.
1. The wipe via Odin, relock, and OTA updates somehow still didn't fix the software issue on the old phone. This seems unlikely but I'm no expert. I would think Odin would clear everything but still the problem exists.
2. It's a hardware issue. This seems unlikely because my wifi works and I have not been able to duplicate this at my house. But there is no denying that the new device works great.
The big question is, can I root/flash on the new phone without fear of it winding up like the old one?
The new phone and tab just had the same problem - unable to tether. This is a first but I rebooted both and it has cleared up. This seems to be a software issue but it's really stubborn.
Samsung says it is a hardware issue. They are sending me my third phone. I hope this works or else I'm switching to another device.
Using native tether locking lockscreen open fixes it. Settings >lockscreen>Screenlock>None. If have 15 toggle mod there is a lock toggle. Best is to use Android wifi tether that now works for TW JB roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
Thanks for the reply. I tried it but unfortunately it only worked for about two minutes before falling into the fail loop. It should be mentioned that on the tab, I see the signal strength at full (since I'm three feet away) but when it's looping the signal drops to nothing on connect. I still have to think it may be a hardware issue.
I just hope phone #3 works as it should.
So far so good. Got the new phone and it's tethering with foxfi just fine. Not rooted yet and probably won't for several days. I'm actually wondering if I can burn this one up and get them to send me a DNA.
