[Q] Is FroYo even available for custom ROMs yet? - Samsung Mesmerize

I havent noticed anything about a FroYo ROM for the Mes but wanted to make sure. I thought I saw that it was released on the Galaxy S but is it available for the Mes in any form yet?

EU Galaxy S and Telus Fascinate only as far as I know. The Mesmerize is slated for Q1 2011. Hopefully that's January and not March. If the VZW Fascinate gets it first, it can and probably will be ported and vice versa.

Ok, figured as much.
When I was in the USCC corp store getting the Mes, one of the guys seems pretty sure 2.2 would be out in Jan. hope he's right.

I guess the question I have is are the different flavors of the Galaxy S that different hardware wise that they would not be able to run it?
Or is it another example of Corp America at work.
My understanding at this time is that Carriers are afraid of network security?
Another theory I have seen is its about tethering and carriers trying to extract every shickle they can.
Sorry if rambling just trying to get my mind wrapped around it all.
really not happy that there is software that I can not run out there because I have an outdated OS on bleeding edge hardware.

I tether every day with No issues. As long as one does not go over the 5gb limit who will know?

I know some people who work for US Cell in all different areas of the business, and they all agree. If you don't go over the 5gb data, they won't know. However, if you do go over the 5gb, they assume you are using the tethering and will charge you for it.

when you start the Wireless Modem app that comes with it stock, it says that you need the tethering package. is this just a friendly warning and us as users are supposed to have that package or does the phone somehow tell USCC that we're tethering?

[Q] Canadian Rogers Captivate System dump on ATT?

I've been reading that Canadian wireless company Rogers is going to be getting the Samsung Captivate.
I'm curious if it would be possible to get the system dump from it to gain access to all of the stuff AT&T had cut out.
In theory they would be exactly the same, just changing out carrier codes and such.
I know it's a bit early to really know, but it sure would be nice.
Sorry, I'm new so I can't post links yet.
It should be possible if it is the same model.
rogers usually leaves the phones stock with all the features intact.
thats why ive decided to wait for them to get it in a couple weeks, instead of ordering it from the states.

All the stuff AT&T cut out, like what? Sideloading apps? A few thethering apps from the Market? I'm certain it won't have as much bloatware as the AT&T version.
Does Rogers have any other Android apps? AT&T is the only one to really "restricts" the Android experience. I'm rooted, sideloaded, and bloat free, and it wasn't hard at all. I just made backups before and after every step. But to each their own

Main thing i want from Rogers, is the HSPUA enabled radio
Rogers does not block unknown sources on their Androids. However they may install some bloatware such as Telenav, a "My Account" app, MySpace, etc, and they may throw in some preloaded bookmarks that won't go away. Again, rooting will easily tweak this.

This is exactly what I'm waiting for. And I can't wait for somebody to build a 2.2 AOSP ROM. That will be sweet.
Lets go Roger's Captivate. I am so ready to get HSUPA speeds. It is a complete bummer to know my phone is being crippled by AT&T.
has there been any more news/rumors to when rogers is coming out with the captivate?

2.2 Finally starting to roll out to the US...

Samsung Vibrant to start getting Froyo on Jan. 21 -- as in tomorrow!
That's right folks... the Vibrant's party has just about started.
Hopefully we'll be within the next 6 months.
Sweet, can't wait to see if we get it too! Hopefully not within 6 mo like you say!
Still betting on St. Patrick's Day for Craptivate and AT&T.

So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.
"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."
In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.
How long does it take to lock down the market, install and lock down bloatware, and take away tethering?

i would agree...i think AT&T has had it and trying to "fine tune" "bloat" it.
Also the have probably been hesitant to release it without a way to lock/disable the Tethering and Mobile AP stock features of 2.2.

Most people that report recent replacements have said GPS works fine. Never hear if this this the normal GPS works for 2-3 days after a fresh flash or they actually did anything to the phone.

Yea, after using Cog and Perception, not so sure if I really want stock 2.2 from AT&T or not. You know it'll be loaded up with bloatware and have useful stuff stripped out from it, such as wifi and usb tethering.
But at least then DG will have an official ROM to start doing mods to.

I can say that it does come from verizon and its not your everyday cs rep or a store employee. I have known the person since I'm 5 (41 Now) and they have been with verizon 15 years and has worked his way up from tech to a nice position.
I can also add that they were looking into making the maintenance update part of the GB upgrade but were having issues with it so as of now they are two seperate ota's.
Im sure some of the devs here can check and see if this has any validity. I cant get him to confirm a GB date but he said nothing will be set for GB until current issues are dealt with..

Out of curiosity, What build version are you showing in About Phone?
Sch-r930.fc01
That's a different build ID than we have. It's almost certain that new roms would have to be made for the phone.
OTOH, the CWM build we have might work for you, and if so, you would at least be able to get root. I would not be confident enough to tell you that our CWM build will definitely work, though I can't image there would be enough differences to break that.

FYI: The cwm way to root will not work. After flashing all you get is a samsung screen with a lot of lines on it. (Had to take it back to the store for a reflashing).
It would need some changes made, but the differences may be about as much as was required to get Fascinate ROMs ported to the Mez/Showcase. Without comparing the two, it's hard to tell how different they are. Also need source to be released for the kernel to see what is different between the two devices as far as hardware is concerned.

Are we talking manual rooting, or one-click?
Shouldn't all Android be the same or very similar, especially when devices are closely related? I just want to get bloatware off my Aviator to free up space, and the only way I know to do that is with a rooted phone.
There isn't a one-click for this device, and the reports I've heard are that te current techniques for the Charge do not work on the Aviator. There seem to be enough hardware differences to cause issues.

I guess I should have gone with the GS2, but the 4G LTE was too tempting! And the price ($99 after $100 rebate). But now, just 2 days after getting my Aviator, the GS2 is $100 cheaper than it was the day I ordered. Only $179 after $100 rebate. Just my luck... that's the one I really wanted, but was worried about spending too much on "just a phone". Can't even get a proper case for the Aviator yet.

Fragmentation is relative. Also a dumb term for dumb pple that have lost the arguement. A windows notepad doc has zero "fragmentation" what does that prove. And what a term to coin by steve jobs. Since its "fragmented" u say stevie, can i use a defragmenter. No wonder pple call rooting jail breaking on apple. First because theres no legitimate intelligent third party development and second because its a virtual prison cell. The apple wardens hate to see cracks in the concrete and bars. Apple will never match 4.0 however long they try. Cant compare a prison cell to a full stadium.

In general, yes. Since all US variants are using the same SOC, just different modems, there should be no issues with cross-pollenating root methods.
In practice, we won't know until things start getting into peoples' hands.
Personally, I'm finding it difficult to sit and wait until week-after-next (my estimated ship date is 7/11) to get mine.

Problem is, I'm spoiled. I have a Galaxy Nexus that I opened another line for, so I used the upgrade on my line that I got now in order to ensure I keep my unlimited data for another two years. My mom will be getting my Nexus.
Now here's the part where I'm spoiled- the SGSIII is a superior phone, that much most people can agree on. However, the SGSIII is running Touchwiz over ICS (4.0.4?). My Nexus is running stock 4.1. It's gonna take some getting used to going back to ICS, even if Jelly Bean has only been public for a day or so.
I believe the International S3's are able to get the 4.1 update now.
I don't see us being to far behind once we actually get our devices from big red.
