[Q] Canadian Rogers Captivate System dump on ATT? - Captivate General

I've been reading that Canadian wireless company Rogers is going to be getting the Samsung Captivate.
I'm curious if it would be possible to get the system dump from it to gain access to all of the stuff AT&T had cut out.
In theory they would be exactly the same, just changing out carrier codes and such.
I know it's a bit early to really know, but it sure would be nice.
Sorry, I'm new so I can't post links yet.

It should be possible if it is the same model.

rogers usually leaves the phones stock with all the features intact.
thats why ive decided to wait for them to get it in a couple weeks, instead of ordering it from the states.

All the stuff AT&T cut out, like what? Sideloading apps? A few thethering apps from the Market? I'm certain it won't have as much bloatware as the AT&T version.

Does Rogers have any other Android apps? AT&T is the only one to really "restricts" the Android experience. I'm rooted, sideloaded, and bloat free, and it wasn't hard at all. I just made backups before and after every step. But to each their own

Main thing i want from Rogers, is the HSPUA enabled radio

Rogers does not block unknown sources on their Androids. However they may install some bloatware such as Telenav, a "My Account" app, MySpace, etc, and they may throw in some preloaded bookmarks that won't go away. Again, rooting will easily tweak this.

This is exactly what I'm waiting for. And I can't wait for somebody to build a 2.2 AOSP ROM. That will be sweet.

Lets go Roger's Captivate. I am so ready to get HSUPA speeds. It is a complete bummer to know my phone is being crippled by AT&T.

has there been any more news/rumors to when rogers is coming out with the captivate?

Ditto for me. A cyanogenmod firmware would be nice but I would be happy with a vanilla 2.2 AOSP rom.

I havent noticed anything about a FroYo ROM for the Mes but wanted to make sure. I thought I saw that it was released on the Galaxy S but is it available for the Mes in any form yet?

EU Galaxy S and Telus Fascinate only as far as I know. The Mesmerize is slated for Q1 2011. Hopefully that's January and not March. If the VZW Fascinate gets it first, it can and probably will be ported and vice versa.

Ok, figured as much.
When I was in the USCC corp store getting the Mes, one of the guys seems pretty sure 2.2 would be out in Jan. hope he's right.
I guess the question I have is are the different flavors of the Galaxy S that different hardware wise that they would not be able to run it?
Or is it another example of Corp America at work.
My understanding at this time is that Carriers are afraid of network security?
Another theory I have seen is its about tethering and carriers trying to extract every shickle they can.
Sorry if rambling just trying to get my mind wrapped around it all.
really not happy that there is software that I can not run out there because I have an outdated OS on bleeding edge hardware.
I tether every day with No issues. As long as one does not go over the 5gb limit who will know?

I know some people who work for US Cell in all different areas of the business, and they all agree. If you don't go over the 5gb data, they won't know. However, if you do go over the 5gb, they assume you are using the tethering and will charge you for it.

when you start the Wireless Modem app that comes with it stock, it says that you need the tethering package. is this just a friendly warning and us as users are supposed to have that package or does the phone somehow tell USCC that we're tethering?

2.2 Finally starting to roll out to the US...

Samsung Vibrant to start getting Froyo on Jan. 21 -- as in tomorrow!
That's right folks... the Vibrant's party has just about started.
Hopefully we'll be within the next 6 months.
Sweet, can't wait to see if we get it too! Hopefully not within 6 mo like you say!
Still betting on St. Patrick's Day for Craptivate and AT&T.

I think we need to start a betting pool for the day they roll out 2.2 across all the Samsung Captivate forums we can find. send a daily update to some sales wonk at Samsung and AT&T.

I found the most interesting section to be
So what was the hold-up? It was purely technical, Brodman said—it wasn't about marketing, payments or sales. Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November, and with the holiday season, it's taken until now for T-Mobile to work out the kinks and integrate its own features.
"It was a quality control and timing issue," Brodman said. "The biggest challenge is integration and customization."
In the future, T-Mobile aims to update all of its phones to new versions of Google's Android OS within 3-5 months after Google makes the OS version public, Brodman said. The delay comes from having to integrate manufacturer skins and T-Mobile's own features, such as Wi-Fi calling.
How long does it take to lock down the market, install and lock down bloatware, and take away tethering?

i would agree...i think AT&T has had it and trying to "fine tune" "bloat" it.
Also the have probably been hesitant to release it without a way to lock/disable the Tethering and Mobile AP stock features of 2.2.

Most people that report recent replacements have said GPS works fine. Never hear if this this the normal GPS works for 2-3 days after a fresh flash or they actually did anything to the phone.
Seems like Russian Roulette to me. Sucks your phone has the shutdown. Mine is within the range but only happens on I9000 roms. Good luck.

Yea, after using Cog and Perception, not so sure if I really want stock 2.2 from AT&T or not. You know it'll be loaded up with bloatware and have useful stuff stripped out from it, such as wifi and usb tethering.
But at least then DG will have an official ROM to start doing mods to.

I dont believe theyve announced an official date yet, still just Summer 2011. The best question is whether AT&T and samsung are going to release an official update for the US Infuse to match the Canadian version with its 2.3 and 1080p.

They're too busy wondering how they're going to spin the Marketing on 3G being 4G once all the other carriers move from 4G to 5G in 2014 when AT&T still is finishing rolling out 3G, haha
When can any carrier be bothered with big OTA updates like gingerbread? They dont care. They figure we bought the phone already so they have their money, why should they spend money giving us what we deserve?

Android/Google starting to piss me off!

I know everyone is going to say,"just root and install custom roms", but I am starting to get really sick and tired of no communication from Google about ICS updates. There's got to be something we can do to get their attention.
Google is the master of ****ty customer service. You will not get anything from them.

I totally pulled that date out of my ass, but apparently it's more important for people to have a date, even if fictive, than a product working properly. I'm sure there's a reason, mind you.

http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-v...rickle-out-dialer-trick-appears-help-it-along
i don't know about you guys but my phone is BEAST! Rooted, oc'd, and themed... no update will make ics run like the rom I'm running now.
If you have a non-rooted ns and you're waiting for an update, maybe you should consider another phone BC stock will always be crap compared to a customized rom and kernel combo. If I was going to stay stock, I'd get something with touchwiz, sense, or even weaksauce apple.
If you are rooted, what the hell are you complaining about? Have you looked in the development section? Do you not see all the freaking options we have? There's only one other phone in America thats running stable ics... and guess what... its a nexus.
As far as I'm concerned, Google showed love by allowing me to run ics for the past 4 months while phones that have hit the market since then haven't even gotten a whiff of real ice cream. So just chill out and take comfort in knowing that the best is yet to come
You without me is like Harold Melvin without the Blue Notes...
The only reason I am waiting for the damn OTA is for a new preferred radio and a damn fix on my 3G connection going down after being in a bad area for a long period of time. This is why I went back to GB because I need to use my phone reliably.

Verizon Pixel debloating

Getting a used Verizon Pixel soon as backup/google home/project fi activation unit. So I'm learning about the situations here. It seems although people are able to unlock it and flash to stock firmware, it's still not possible to get stock OTA after all... right? I know I can do everything I want with it as is, but I still prefer a clean system... So if total debloat is not possible, is there an app or anything like Package Disabler for Pixels?

The updates come regularly, but are usually a couple weeks behind the standard update. There is a Verizon specific version of each monthly release... You can see them all on the Google download page. Curious to see how it goes with Android O getting released Monday though... Might be a bigger delay there. We will see.

Sit down for this answer it will knock you off your feet.
They are actually a few hours ahead. Both Google and VZ release on the first Monday of the month late morning. But since VZ is east coast they start dropping sooner.
Also, Google makes the VZ versions so they are available for download from Googles dev site....same time as the plain Google version. And its all different on this phone, the VZ version just has some radio and network changes. There is no bloat in it. You actually get that from VZ when you put the VZ SIM in it. I got it on my Google version when I put the SIM in it.
And its not much, just the basics. MY Verizon, Visual Voicemail. That kind of stuff.
