It's that easy!

Does this work on the regular milestone?

Universal Androot is better. You don't need PC. just install the APK and tab the "Root" button. after 10 seconds, the phone is rooted.
and also have unroot function in case if you need to run System Update.

but universal not support the 2.2.1

Thank you. This works great.

A fair question. Do you get a broken lock icon after, 'yes or no' after the procedure when you reboot the phone?

Earlier in the thread someone said to use Universal Androot and then someone else said that it wouldn't work on 2.2. I use it all the time and I am on Khal's Epicbluesteel 2.2 ROM. It is very convenient when say you have to take your phone into the carrier. I have unrooted with it, deleted the Superuser.apk, taken my phone in and once done, I re-rooted in the parking lot. I used it on 2.1 the first day I got my phone. In fact I have never used Superoneclick.

All of the custom ROMs are already rooted? UniversalAndroot shouldn't work if you start from a stock 2.2.1 (the only stock one we have is the Motoroi 2.2.1). Anyway, I've never tried unrooting a 2.2.1 ROM and then using UniversalAndroot, have you tried that? After flashing the Korean sbf I've always used the same exploit used in SuperOneClick (manually though), because UniversalAndroot wasn't supposed to work on 2.2.1, but now that I'm thinking about it, if it's a kernel exploit it possibly does still work there because Motorola shipped Motoroi's 2.2.1 with eclair's kernel...

Yep, worked for me. Had to do it once or twice while on Kahl's personared and then on Epicbluesteel. Was able to unroot, fix the problem (ie CBW issues) and then reroot with it. Maybe my phone is an anomoly and I should try cm7.

UnrEVOked root exploit for EVO and Hero online

Download this apk and install it to get root on your EVO.
It will only root your current ROM. (There's no way to access recovery). Also, any changes to /system will be lost on reboot due to NAND protection. If you need to modify /system or install a new ROM, try toastcfh's method. If you just need to get a root shell in adb or run an app like Auto Memory Manager, Unrevoked should be just fine.
Unlike toastcfh's patch, it will not wipe your phone. If you have data you'd like to backup before applying the more complete root, run Unrevoked, use adb shell, su, and busybox cp to copy the files you're saving to /sdcard. Then, you can use toastcfh's method without worrying about data loss.
As always, thanks to the guys who put this APK together. Happy rooting.
Original (now obsolete) post:
The guys over at unrevoked.com are still sitting on their exploit until they can vet it against the OTA update. However, if you are feeling restless, haven't taken the OTA, and want root without wiping, try this:
Download and decompress http://unrevoked.com/hero-root.zip
Code:
adb push ~/Downloads/hero-root/unrevoked /sdcard/unrevoked
adb shell
cd /sdcard
sh unrevoked
This will install Superuser Permissions on your EVO.
For the record, I have not been prompted for the OTA update. Unrevoked is still working on the OTA-compatible patch. If you take the OTA, I suspect this method will break.
I have no affiliation with the unrevoked people. I just followed cteneyck's lead from the discussion thread last night and thought I'd share my findings.
FYI i found this on the HERO Dev Forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Can you install recovery image?
How would I do that?
I think this is just a userland root. I can't even adb pull in private directories. I have to use busybox cp to get them over to my sdcard first.
I haven't updated, and haven't rooted with toast's method becuase flashing the data partition to root is ridiculous. Trying this now and will report back findings.

Theres a recovery image included in the zip. Does it work for hero only?
Do we know the files are the same for the evo? Seems like the recovery at the very least would be different, and this does say HERO-root.zip...
JUST SAYIN'
This works for EVO. I took the plunge for you guys. haha.

I'm not comfortable flashing a Hero boot.img to my EVO. The official release should be out in a few days, when we'll know more about this root method, and if we can get real recovery.
The shell script itself does nothing to unlock the SPL, so just running fastboot boot recovery.img returns "remote: not allowed."
Trying to fastboot the recovery image forced me to reboot my phone. I had to run unrevoked again to get root back. As was reported earlier this week, it looks like this method has problems sticking between startups.

I'm in build 1.32.651.1 CL171253 - I assume this means I have not applied the OTA?
EDIT: Oh nevermind, duh, the SuperUser dialog came up and I hadn't hit allow....
You have to OK the su request on your handset. Type su, then wake your EVO and click Approve.
SO what will happen if i try this method and have the OTA??? Will it brick?
I doubt it would brick - it's just a shell script. It will probably fail to root your phone, but without negative side-effects.

really... they sure didnt say anything about it....like what it does exactly....
can't get the prompt to allow for the SuperUser apk to install.
No Su
No one has access to a writable /system in android on the evo.
This option is easier but has no recovery.
If you can do better by all means step up and produce. Otherwise stfu about things sucking 1 day after release root wise. Show some class and try not to run off any more developers.
These things take time. Its a work in progress.

[APP] z4root - root android in one click from an app

Having trouble rooting your phone? This might be just for you!
Credits
z4ziggy
Sebastian Krahmer's rageagainstthecage
What this does
It is an app you install (currently you must side load it, but it will be on the market once it's had some testing here on XDA), that has a single button that will root your device. Should work on ALL Android devices -- please leave a note if it works or doesn't work on your device.
How safe is this?
Should be 100% safe - nothing on disk is changed besides the root binaries, so if something goes wrong, simply rebooting the device should fix up any and all issues. Let me know if you find any bugs!

V1.0.0 : Initial Release
V1.1.0 : Will now open the application settings page if USB debugging is not enabled.
New version 1.1.0 uploaded with detection for USB debugging not being enabled.
This looks really cool! But, is it just a shell root? Not a nand unlock?

It does not seem to work on my Archos 101 Internet tablet, it just reboots the device.
Edit: Busybox says it isn't rooted.
Will this do a Full root on X10 Mini Pro? just as this tool is suppose to do? Unfortunately that tool keeps looping even if I tap usb debugging for hours...
So Root and Shell Root and Superuser and allow non-market apps (thought that was just a normal setting in Android..)?
awesome app, I just did this on Sony x10, although I can't confirm that it installed busybox. I loaded it from the market and it didn't detect it.
Install on busybox 1.17.1 worked good
Thanks.
It started the process and rebooted, but hadn't installed Busybox, so downloaded it from the Market and it confirms the phone is actually rooted. Good start but far from perfect.
Does this work on the HTC Evo?
Any1 tried on the dinc???

Worked great on my EVO.
Working on GSM HTC Hero 2.1 with original spanish Orange rom, AFAIK. The screen says "wait for root to complete and reboot your phone", stays there forever and after 1 hour I decided to go back. Rebooted manually and there it was, just downloaded Busybox from Market and working fine.
Its been the only working method for me, so saying thanks is actually less than needed.

Everything works perfect on my Droid 2, fast and easy one click root like it says.
Been waiting for something like this, so glad I did it.
Opens a whole new world of great rooted apps and
getting rid of that unnecessary bloatware.
Remember to first enable (turn on) usb debugging: Menu> Settings> Applications> Development> USB Debugging
Kudos! Thanks again to the Dev!
I tried Superoeclick yesterday only my X10 Mini (2.1 firmware), which tells me the phone is rooted, but still won't allow me to delete apps
just tried this and it ran, rebooted the phone as it should but when I try to remove some apps it still won't let me
forgot too add, it didn't install Busybox either
It worked flawlessly on galaxy s jm1,
great app !

[Q] E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command

I tried to S-Off my Desire S using the revolutionary tool and followed instructions. Towards the end of the process and revolutionary tool stopped responding and it forced me to end the application. Tried checking if it went successful, it said that my phone was on S-Off. I tried going to recovery and flash "this zipfile" (source: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.p.../revolutionary) to root the device since gingerbreak was not working. I got the icon of a phone with red triangle and exclamation point. I did do volume up key + power to enter to recovery then i got the error E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Please help.

Yes, wipe the cache. You will not lose anything either way.

Not true people have hit this problem after performing a factory reset of the device and during the market re-install of their applications.
Others have hit this problem after pulling battery after device crash, the cause of crash can be a multitude of things, from a hung third party downloaded application to re-install or flash of a new ROM.
Just always take backups and try to be careful. Only do what you fully understand.
If device crashes always try Volume up key + Volume Down Key + Power key to reset before resorting to battery pull. Plus remember that the battery should never be pulled and re-inserted too quickly.
@ben_pyett thank you so much for your help. What would you suggest that I do now? I already tried wipe the cache, it just says wipe successful. the options i have after is to reboot system and install update from sdcard? do i need to download something like CWD recovery? If yes, where can I download that? Thanks. I apologize for the ignorance.

No problem, this appears to be happening very frequency to people, so I think we need to do more tests before we say fried chip.
In my signature is a link fried emmc? Try to do some off the commands In this as this will determine whether you have a bad chip, you'll also find the link to fast boot and adb commands that you need on the pc in order to run these commands in my signature
I'll look back tomorrow and we can try again

Funnily enough, superoneclick is what I used many months back to root my phone in the days when GingerBreak didn't work for our device.
@boazgalpo
Although, initially something that I'd like you to try is to attempt to install the EXT4 custom recovery onto your device:
1) download and unzip this file on to your PC.
2) Plug your booted device into the computer using USB (with debugging enabled)
3) Run a Command Prompt window on the PC where the unzipped files are accessible run the script called runme.cmd (cut n paste the screen output)
4) Boot into recovery to see if it worked?
EDIT:
You download superoneclick from here, it has its own site although give my suggestion a go first.
As if it works you'll be able to simply flash a custom ROM which will come rooted.
Thanks a lot man. I will surely try that.

[HOWTO] Root the Atrix 2(Updated for 2.3.6 FINALLY)

First: I'd like to make it clear I am not claiming this process as my own. This method was created by p3droid over at the MyDroidWorld Forums. I am not a dev, just someone compiling information.
Second: This root method is originally intended for the Droid Bionic and I take no responsibility if this bricks your phone.
Third: This root was discovered by JRW 28 So give him some love with that thanks button.
If you are on 2.3.6:
Install the OTA and upgrade your phone to 2.3.6
Download the 2.3.6 root zip from HERE
Make sure you have the right drivers installed then connect your phone to your PC.
Unzip the file and then double-click "Click-To-Root.bat".
Refer to the trouble shooting step bleow the 2.3.5 method if you are unable to attain root!
If you are on 2.3.5:
Root: I used the Lazy One Click and it worked perfectly, others have had success with the full manual method.
I am a manual man, I don't use 1 clicks so I will post this the only way I know how...
Download the follow file: it contains the exploit, su, Superuser
Download exploit ---> Exploit.zip
1) Unzip contents of folder to your Desktop
2) open a command terminal and navigate to the folder (cd Desktop/Exploit)
3) type the following commands
---> adb push zerg /data/local
---> adb push su /data/local
---> adb push Superuser.apk /data/local
---> adb shell
---> cd /data/local
---> chmod 777 zerg
---> ./zerg
4) Wait for the root to be gained
5) type the following commands
---> adb shell (only type this if you are no longer in [email protected])
---> mount -o rw,remount /dev/null /system
---> cat /data/local/su > /system/bin/su
---> cat /data/local/Superuser.apk > /system/app/Superuser.apk
---> chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
---> chmod 4755 /system/app/Superuser.apk
---> reboot

Important for those using Oneclick:
1.Extract the files from 1-click_exploit.zip.
2.Enable USB debugging. Do so by going into your settings, then to applications, then to development.
3.Set your connection type to charge only. You can change your connection type through the notification bar once your are connected.
4.Make sure you go to Settings, Applications, and check Unknown sources if you haven't done so already.
5.Click runme.bat while your phone is connected. Be patient and let the program do it's thing. YOUR PHONE WILL REBOOT! Do not be alarmed as this is normal. Your phone should now be rooted.
Cheers!
If runme.bat hangs after daemeon starts:
1.First make sure you have USB Debugging, Unknown Sources, and Charge only connection enabled
2.If none of these options work, uninstall your drivers and download and install one of these:

This is a terminal screen showing the Atrix 2 (Codenamed Edison, look it up if you must) accessing root.
Anyone else try?
I'll be uploading a terminal screen in a second accessing root.

Yea I have it working and full SU Access. No wonder the computer doesnt have access to the phones internal memory it is by default set as r/o...Im gonna change it to R/W and see if that changes anything other than allowing R/W access. And after trying notta still only SD Card access like I thought, I assume there is some sorta setting we can edit though. At least that is my assumption. I used the One Click method Worked flawlessly on my device and Very Simple.
built in wifi tether
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160452
this method also works for the Atrix 2
Thanks for the tip!

How do you root the phone using the one click method? I've downloaded the zip and extracted it. Do I just connect my phone and then click on the runme.bat? When I connect my phone, any special instructions there or just connect it as if i was going to charge it, then enable usb debugging? Please clarify. Thanks.
Enable USB debugging. Then connect your phone to the computer. In the notification area, click on "USB connection" for more options. Click charge only.
Then double click on runme.bat
Follow instructions. Be patient while phone reboots. It will say (in the command prompt window) you have successfully rooted when it's all done.
It's schweet.

So, what's the next step? Do we have to get the BL unlocked in order to get a Recovery installed or what?
Contact a admin and let him know you got some development so you'll get a thread

If you read at the end of my original post I document what I've tried. If your really adventurous you may want to try the bionic bootstrapper but it may brick your phone... I haven't tried that yet, though the similarities between the atrix2 and the bionic lead me to believe it may work.

Right now we don't have a CWM of our own to flash. There is a possibility of flashing the Bionics bootstrap recovery but we don't know what the circumstances are gonna be. Someone could result in a bricked A2, what we need is some development help right now

V20C Root OK!
Thanks DAN!
another mexican 20A rooted with this procedure.
thanks for the tip and the effort.
That's good but does it solve the Ghost call issue?
well as far as i know, the ghost calls came from the baseband of the v21A firmware and the other firmwares has a "new" baseband, so if you flash v20a, b, c or any firmware, i suposse what with the new baseband u will not have ghost calls
i have instaled v20a and till now i have no ghost calls
It worked! Finally, no need to flash my phone down to V21a.
Thanks Dan! Your so great!!!!!

are you sure if you are flashing correct CWM? maybe you are chosing the Optimus 2x Recovery
it offers me only optimus 2x, no other...
its that because you brick your phone, try to flash the CWM with another version of the aplication, because the last version dosnt not detect the device automaticaly
for me v20b...no way to root!!!
edit...my fault...it works fine
