Feeling impatient

I've had my phone 2 weeks and run out of things to do to it. Where's the roms? froyo where are you ?

Well I can't wait for froyo + full file system lag fix

If you're not satisfied with the current rate of development, feel free to put together your own rom or even contribute to current development. The phone is what, two, three months old? Some phones didn't even have root methods for that long. If you wanted an att device that had a background of strong community hacking, should have gone with an htc device. The method of building roms on this phone is massively different and requires time to get everything sorted. And I'm willing to believe a lot of devs are waiting fur for the 2.2 source

You're saying you're impatient for new roms, implying you are not satisfied with your current options. There are several people doing fantastic work on our phones and you're belittling their work. Even jokingly.

I think you are taking this entire thread the wrong way.
I think the OP is trying to say that he has done all he can, where is something new? More things to play with.
Nowhere did he belittle or offend anyone. Nor was anything implied.
I have had my phone for 7 weeks - I want to see even more new ROMs -but in no way am I saying anything about anyone. I can't wait for the first Cyanogenmod either - I am impatient, just like I was when waiting for the Captivate launch day.

Looks to me like you are a good candidate to get in the kitchen and start cooking. That way you don't have to wait around for the roms and we can all play.
I don't think it's a matter of lightening up, I agree the op surely said "where are the roms?" That could have ben interpreted more than one way, which it was. Coming from the op of the forum nazi thread, sounds like you have plenty of time to start cooking and stop whining

Hey gunny, I know how you feel. I too am a bit bored. The rom development is great so far but that's starting to reach it's limit with what devs can do while we wait for froyo. I would love something new to play with. Maybe flash or some awesome game to come along that really pushes this device. Gps fix from sammysung would be nice. I could drive around using that to kill some boredom.
Anyway, props to the devs. Thank god we have some good ones. I would have been bored weeks ago without and with a laggy phone on top of that.

I understand both sides but unfortunately unless you know how to dev we all must be patient. These guys have done very good work and so far it is right on par with the Vibrant, and we all know T-mobile has many more dev's to work on ROMS. With more time will come better products, and all Galaxy S phones will be waiting for a while for 2.2. If Cyanogen comes out soon it shouldn't be hard for Eugene or someone to make a port of it, even if Eugene does not own a Captivate.

There's no need to fight guys, in all seriousness we have the best touch-screen phone on the whole market!
Gorgeous screen, specs, and soon to be a great international community of devs with the whole family of galaxy s line sharing ideas and accelerating the growth of development at a great pace.
Not to mention the soon to be implemented froyo that will not only introduce optimizations and flash, but also allow for a greater use of the phone's potential- spec wise.
Take into consideration the further development after froyo + full lag fix + a COMMUNITY effort of collaboration and I see a really bright future ahead of us.
Personally I LOVE my phone, it does everything I want it to do (I multi-task like a beast!!) BEAUTIFUL camera software.. I painlessly take panoramic shots! What more can you ask for?
Yes some high quality games compared to that of the iphone would be great, but the anti-piracy measures are not on par with the iphone at the moment, so we'll have to wait a little for the big-name app/game developers to step in.

I generally answer any questions asked and follow it up with any advice I can offer. threads like this where, even unintentionally, the OP is kind of being dismissive toward the excellent work Unhelpful, DG, eugene (and a slew of others who I have forgotten to name).
it'd be fine if he was just opening a thread to say "I'm excited for something new! can't wait for froyo! woo!" it's that the attitude of this is "I'm bored with all the work everyone else has done." especially when it's someone who doesn't contribute to development (not counting donations, I have no idea if he has donated) himself. Ok, I clicked on this thread because I could have written it myself, as it was intended. Which was obviously "Ok, I tried all the mods and now I want to try a new one or an update of 1 I already have."
For instance, as you can see from my signature, I run sre123. Last night, Designgears posted that 123a would be posted that night. I thought nothing of saying "ooo, can't wait, please hurry!!!" because DG knows how I meant it (I hope).
I have only seen a couple of REAL jerk posts, and those were like "hey thanks, your mod/rom broke my phone" idiots. Read the OP's and mod and your own risk, fools!
I have NEVER programmed. I understand what gets done here, having been a pc tech, but I can ONLY help by installing and testing and reporting results. This device and this forum has inspired me to try to learn what the guys like Cyanogen, Designgears, Eugene etc do. But until I learn, I will eagerly await new stuff to play with, much like the OP of this thread.
Sorry to type so long a note, but the ONLY thing that can ruin this forum is nazi's. I live in S Florida, got enough condo and homeowner association nazi's to deal with !!! =)

I wonder why that is. Dosn't seem intuitive that would be the case. TM is a much smaller carrier, with much less coverage. I can't imagine (of course maybe I'm short on imagination) that there are more people on the TM version than the Captivate.
I too am impatient. But the impatience is for the GPS Fix.

If I had the time to invest, I'd get into the ROMs. In fact I started to get into DEV. Downloaded the tools, did a couple weeks playing. But my programming has never expanded to Java, and the learning curve is too large, so I guess I won't. I'd enjoy it, but being at the computer all the time is not how I want to spend my time. I already spend a lot of time on it.
Regarding the DEVs, I appreciate them, and enjoy their work, and contribute occasionally to those I tend to utilize and keep using. But that doesn't diminish my right to be impatient. All customers are, no?

I want the GPS fix. All Galaxy S phones come with a nonfunctioning GPS. Froyo will be great to have also but they need hurry up with the GPS. The Droid X and all Motorola Android phones have an awesome GPS out of the box. I'm hoping Samsung gets it together otherwise they're not worth buying if it lacks a feature that most phones nowadays have. This problem from Samsung shows they rush things out to fast and then once they're out they fail to repair phones currently released.
I'll be eating my words if an update gets released within a week though.

From what I have read about Dev's and Tmobile is mainly because Tmob was the first to have Android. Lots of them are familiar from being already on Tmob. But that is just what I have read, does not necessarily make it correct. The dev's for the Captivate are doing a phenomenal job getting us great products.
Highlighted portion: Joking aside since I know you are, if people are impatient they really should start learning how to do this stuff. The intent of the thread missed the mark based on how it was written. We all want more ROM's or theme's or launchers etc...and they are coming but nobody has any say to be impatient when the majority of these dev's do these on a donation basis. How bad would it suck when people continue to feel impatient and the dev's decide to not dev anymore?

It all comes down to preference; however, I must say that with all of the updates, and new roms, I'm flashing at least twice a day and sometimes even losing track of what I'm running. (Although I know I'm currently running Andromeda and it is by far the best I've had on my Cappy. Awesome GPS lock in seconds, fast, stable.)
The point is... can we consolidate, or come up with a legit thread/wiki that clarifies the pros, cons, features, and specifications on roms. Reading 20 pages of forum after a new ROM is released is getting tiring.

If you look at the feature sets, most of them are the same, just different skins, apps, etc included...
everything is pretty common knowledge since we are all running the same mods... additional apps, skins, etc are just fluff, which is why I personally don't include that kinda stuff. I will leave that to the theme and app section and the person running the rom to make it look how they want.
as far as all of us working together, I respond to all the devs who ask for help, I have joined up and help the team efforts, as well as individuals putting roms out that have asked how to do various things.
Putting it all into a wiki? No thanks, that stuff changes to much to want to deal with updating a wiki with 20 different variations on how to do a smali edit for X feature.
If you take donations, in a community based team, this always becomes a stress point, best not to take donations at that point. I won't accept a cut of team donations, someone will ***** about it if they get less or more, not worth it. (just noticed adam sent me a donation, KNOCK THAT OFF! lol)
As far as you not liking to flash a lot, get help, you are a flash addict

I feel the same. So many roms are including everything everyone else is. Just skinning and a few differences. I stick to a select few toms and just go frombthere because there is just too much to keep track of right now.
DG you are an idol of a great developer.
It would be great if more.devastating would get together to lighten the load and make it a little easier on all involved, but then again I am excited to.see so.many great revs making a rom all their own.

It might help a lil with noobs trying to learn, but honestly reading through 100s of pages in one thread usually ends up helping you learn more than just the rom itself. When i first registered on this forum all i did was read for the first few months before even making a post

Guess I will jump on the bandwagon before this gets moved to the general section.
There was a point in time not so long ago where there were only about 3 ROMs for the captivate and a lot of drooling over what the other SGS variants had going on.
I for one am very happy to see the Captivate community grow and put out some good stuff. The variety and choices really help enable the end-user to get their phone to look and work how they want, end-user empowerment tends to make people happy.
Taco Bell has maybe a dozen individual ingredients but it's the way they are combined that makes each product special.
As for having to read the threads of each ROM, yea it can be a pain, but it is good for you. You are informed, can make the best choice, and know what to expect from what you are about to put on your phone.

The note you made about the themes and such is exactly why I love Andromeda. I personally do not like the 2.0 theme, but the fact that there is an unthemed version as well as a themed version makes me the happiest panda in the world, and I think more ROM cookers should adopt this policy.
What I'd love more than anything else though, is a ROM that supports the hardware voice processing of the Captivate, as well as any custom kernels/modems the user wants. That would be the ultimate ROM in my opinion. Oh, and the 4 lockscreen mod is a must as well. I do not like the glass lockscreen

Every ROM is made for a handfull of people. AS it seems. So to really make a wiki and save all the Info from a few thousand users is just nutz. even to have a WiKi just for the ROMs is kinda nutz as others have said. Just so much changes daily it would be so hard to keep up with
So i guess....Like all the others. We can let this thread die now

I agree with you Smoke. With the way updates come out sometimes daily for fixes or depending on an issues hourly a Wiki would just be too hard to maintain. If some one is up for it then go for it. I just see it as a way for people not to have to read the roms thread and doing research before they flash a rom to their $500 device.

I was involved in the HD2 forum before Android on SD was a wild spert from a dev. and the community over there needs no words of compliment (it is a given) that they are awesome.
Then I traveled on to the G2 forum where the contributions there were amazing as well.
The Question:
Is the Samsung Galaxy S 4G community the WORST anyone else has had the misfortune of dealing with as well?

Yes I agree with the original poster. I had this phone for about a week before I returned it because of the aforementioned reasons with this forum. Even offered to send my phone to a dev but got nothing but f'd up attitude from most everyone involved (besides the dev)! If I'm gonna have an android I want a community surrounding it that does not spend all day "DER DER #$% this is in the wrong forum, we have nothing else better to do but ***** @ everyone for attempting to get this community started!"
On a personal note, it sucked extra cause I had just sold my vibrant shortly before the 4g release cause that community also had seen its downfall in the past few months itself. Came over here to see this fledgling little group trying to get off the ground but not being in any way at all welcoming to any real thought provoking conversation. How dare we ask questions and talk about our phone!
As awesome as a phone as this is, it just does not appear that its ever gonna be a dev phone. Wish the opposite was the truth. Samsung is partly to blame for that also.

Did someone say iPhone ... lol... oh no so that's why Apple is suing Samsung ... we copying not only their phone but the owners attitudes as well... lol...
I'm just joking, trying to lighten the mood...
Back to the subject I think what affected this phone was that it came out too late after the Nexus S and too close to the G2x... I think if it had the extra space of the Vibrant we would be as good as that community ... or if it ran gingerbread ... but oh well... we do have less issues than the lather phone I mention...

I think it's just a few who think themselves "forum police". I honestly hope this doesn't turn into the "vibrant" forum's. Please TRY, I know it's hard at times, to be friendly to ANY one. New to old, dumba$$'s to dev's, try to treat them all as you would want to be treated (except for you self deprecating, masochist's ).

I always see everyone complaining about the Vibrant forum, I don't really see anything wrong with it. Or was it something that happened in the past?

I dunno, I'm technically savvy. I did alot on my G1 in terms of mod'ing. Google Experience phones are designed for that.
Anytime you get a phone with a customized rom though things change up a bit. Hence, the G2x is gonna get alot more in the community because it's a fairly stock build/experience.
I knew this when I bought the SGS4G. I like the screen (amoled), the speed etc. I'll probably get the urge to do some heavy mod'ing at some point, but for now I'm happy.

Sure this was a bit of a rant and like most could have been titled a little better. BUT atleast its not in the dev area. If this community keeps being stupid, can Mr. Clown close the whole thing, I don't want him too! But dumb asses keep creating thread that had answee before sgs4g even existed. what issues are you having and sorry you feel as if the rest of the devs other then krylon dont meet your expectations.

I don't get it. What problems are you having with the phone? Why are you complaining about the community? If it's a problem, there are plenty of other forums on this phone (rootzwiki is pretty popular nowadays ). I get that it's frustrating sometimes. I get frustrated too, but please don't project that thought to the entire community. I help out here and there and I get flamed from the very people I help. But one again, let's just calm down. If you guys have an issue with the phone, just search and then post about it. I usually answer my pm's...as quite a few of you already know...

I can only judge it by what I have gotten out of it.....currently my SGS4G runs faster, cooler, and stays charged longer than stock. The audio is better, I'm running GB and I got my choice of 9 lock-screens etc, etc....

Ok, back to the drawing board!
I feel like such a dueche, I was really tired and my expectations were very high! I wasn't ready for any challenges and got very frustrated.
I only woke up this morning to see a kind friendly community among the SGS4G crowd. I guess I got spoiled over on the HTC side again.
My issues are that I feel like I am back at square one... Example: Flashing an EXT4, the only thing I could find was a universal zip for another phone which did not work. I really just need to put some time back into this like a noob again.
Once more I apologize and might just need to delete this thread for the sake of y'all being so nice... Uhg I feel like such an ass lol

lol dude, just take your time. I'm fairly new here myself, and don't find it all that bad. There are lots of guides out now to help you get through flashing a new rom, and there is always someone who is willing to help (I see Jager, FB, dsexton, and Raver in here a lot helping out people).
Anyway, just spend some time reading about the ROMs we have in the dev section now, and find one you like.
btw, getting ext4 on froyo is as easy as flashing the bali kernel in cwm. works great with any froyo rom (including stock). GB roms tend to be a bit tricky, but you'll get it if you follow one of the guides.
Put it this way, my SGS4g, NOT overclocked is running 3X faster than it did stock (according to quadrant) on one of the new crop of GB roms that are out now and is currently on 25 hours of uptime with 65% battery left.

What ROM are you trying to flash? I am currently on bionix frost and I love it completely. Runs on par with the GB roms. If you want some GB, look into icbinb GB or whitehaks new ROM. But let us know what you want to do and we can point you in the right direction...

This is not Mcdonald and fast food (you get it when you want)....There are a lot of strategy and redudencency that overlap to creat your custom ROM or Kernel. I'm tired of reading thesethreads. I was just waiting for it to come down to this. I get the feeling I'm one of the few that read every post in the threads for Incredibly Re-engineered, The Perfect Storm, and Gingeritus up until the holiday weekend began. It's not like the guy just had a bad day. It's more like for a couple months now people were getting way outta line with him about how he built his ROMs. Go over and read the thread for IR. As long ago as last year he was dealing with slugs that didn't read the OP. One of the reasons he put the wipe script in there was because of all the idiots flashing without wiping, then posting how his ROM sucked and had all kinds of issues, like it was his fault. I've flashed his ROMs onto many different phones, flawlessly, and everytime I hand the phone back to the owner they're like "Wow! This thing is FAST!" Yeah, maybe this subject is a dead horse, but it really bothers me how folks treat one another sometimes, especially when the bad attitude comes from a moron directed at someone basically giving gifts away. The mere thought of doing what these guys do makes me want to sever major arteries in my body. But, I'm sure glad they like it because I like the results! I could gripe about how the home screens are full of icons and widgets nobody would use, or the lack of some features like wireless tether in some ROMs, or the screen brightness, or the kernel he packed with it, but is there a point? No. I'm some nobody that stumbled across his work one day and thought "Gosh! This is top drawer work!" When someone puts there heart and time into something and applies the skills acquired over years, it shows. It shows in Chingy's work all the way back to Re-engineered for the EVO. I completely understand how he'd feel reading some of the posts on his threads. I would probably have done the same thing, except sooner. Sometimes I wonder why there aren't as many devs here as I'd like to see, especially for kernels, but I don't need to wonder long. I've screwed up my phone before. I've gotten pissed because it looked like some dev couldn't do anything right, but the reality is if his work was that bad, it wouldn't have been posted long enough for me to download. So I point the finger at me. Sometimes trying to get something to work just pisses me off because I'm not a dev, or even that wise to this stuff in general. Restore a nandroid and keep on having a good day. Pretty simple. It's hard to believe that's too hard for everyone to do! I feel bad for Chingy. More than a couple folks have gotten ugly with him over a long span of time. Gingeritus 1.1 is out now. I'm gonna go get that and continue enjoying how CHINGY, and ONLY CHINGY, believes a sense ROM should work.

These same "fellow" devs say the same snide remarks towards me. There is no code of honor.
That said, if you cannot stand the pressure of some dickhead users, then hang up the title belt. That goes for any dev, including myself. I mean I could get mad and retreat to my own forum because you called me a catty old lady, but I don't have that thin of skin. Sorry.
As for the virus issue, that was effing ridiculous because the dev jumped on me, and he didn't even take the time to read ahead of time and see what the deal was, and that I was dealing with accusations of kanging. QUITE the different issue.
Deving anything in the android community requires thick skin. Sure I get mad. But I have not yet picked up my ball and gone home. The day I do, it won't be for reasons that a user got butt hurt for not reading.

FYI.
Think what you want about the guy, he kept ROMs moving when there was only two guys working on our device. I for one will miss his work. He pushed development away from shades of stock and in interesting directions. He is moving to a Samsung Galaxy S Epic II.

He might have been the King of Kang, but he did some good stuff with the phone. Dem ROMs.

That's a bummer, I know a lot of people enjoyed his work. I however will not miss his attitude, I stopped using any of his work months ago because of the way he talked to people. I much prefer to support Blue, because he is very helpful, and approachable, and is always respectful. I am bummed for the people who enjoyed Undead's work though.

Being a developer is stressful. I for one would have his same attitude if I was a developer. He did have a bad attitude at times but he supported his work to the fullest. No other dev for DS can say that.

I've never encountered him acting out on anyone, granted I've only been in this community for the past few weeks or so, but does that matter?
He was great at making roms, and graciously released his work to all of us. He even kept up a great update schedule. Devs are not here to be your friend or guidance counselor. And they also have no obligation of being nice to anyone. Releasing their work to everyone is nice in itself.

It is my right to think he had a bad attitude and boycott his work. I also didn't like him cutting out common features from a rom just to make it faster, when this device is already fast enough for anything I need it to do, so I choose to use something else. I totally respect the fact that he put a lot of time and energy into building these ROMs, however, I never really felt like he *owned* any. Most developers tend to build a ROM that they use, and improve it. Undead built like a bazillion ROMS, and I never felt like he really personally used/supported any of his creations.

I think the biggest impact would be to out counterparts in the rootzwiki. Without him, I think that forum is gonna go quite... quiet.
Meanwhile, I don't think it's a good idea for members in this community to be flaming at each other--we're supposed to support each other, aren't we?
It sucks that he left (here and mt4gs in general) - whether we regard him as king kang, or DS's savior, but we'll have to move on. I'm probably gonna write him a PM over at rootz saying thanks for his contribution for MT4GS later today.

You know, I couldn't help but chime in here; I'm a freelance developer, and don't get to develop a lot for anything but work. So this brings me to a short manifesto (sorry I'm a marxist and I like to use the word when I can), even though it's just a list of observations I want to share:
1) No 'community' is better without someone [I hesitated to say anyone ]
1a) I feel this attitude is such a contradiction to the intent of
open-source. In other words, open-source, just not open-attitude.
1b) I'm not trying to be insulting, but I find it funny you
comment on the red-herring of someone's age, when I would think
someone closer to my age (I'm gathering you too are a gainfully employed
adult; we'll just say closer to 40 than 30 =) )...so I try to liken it to
working with people you don't necessarily like; caveat here is no ones
making a lot of/any money, so try to be a little more appreciative and
a little less judgmental (think off all these peeps work as a favor). Which
brings me to...
1c) "...he got into deving for this phone for the wrong reasons. This was
inevitable. I'm surprised he stuck THIS long." We need to get together
and start a business if u can read minds, and what the "wrong reasons"
for learning rom development might be...well I'll be thinking
on that one for a while
2) Is this even verified? I'm about to PM him and ask....he's been nothing
but polite and cordgial from what I've seen.
3) "That is the kind of quip Undead would regularly let go. And why???
Completely unnecessary." Ever occur to you that the community(YOU)

Wow. I'm impressed. That was very well said. FYI @_atlien_ I'm 27. I just got no patients for peoples stupidity. I pmed undeadk9 a long message. Thanking him for the time he did develop for us. Also @_atlien_ It is YOUR attitude and YOUR Stupidity asking bout unmarrying android and Google was by far the most stupid request I've even seen on any forum. YOU bring out the worst in people. Ive never even seen anything undead released, i just got this phone last weekend, anyways its always sad to see a developer leave the scene, i come from the evo shift forums and we had some good development but nothing was updated and maintained there was always a new release that never seen updates, and i stepped up and did everything i could for them, and it was a very rewarding adventure....btw never sell anyone short because you all just got a couple new users than can dev a bit lol
