[App] Liquid Physics Live Wallpaper - Android Apps and Games

I made a quick port of Grant Kot's liquid simulator java applet and turned it into a live wallpaper.
It uses a ton of cpu so it will probably drain the battery pretty fast but it's fun to play with.
http://grantkot.com/MPM/Liquid.html
zip file contains the eclipse project with all the source code if anyone wants to do something with it
edit: - ignore the apk in this post and download quinbd's version a few posts down, it's much better

It runs slower than my pc; its not fullscreen.

Thanks! I like your version better. I wish there was more particles but my phone just isn't fast enough.

Well, I hate Java and I love C/C++, so I might end up porting this to use JNI. This would probably be one of those areas where using C++ for particle movement could really make a big difference. Thank you.

Very cool.
I noticed you said it's "as fast as I could get it", but you're using postDelayed with 50ms intervals, which limits the refresh rate to 20Hz.
I changed that to 17ms, and added a simple fps display to test - it seems to max out around 30fps on my phone.

Yeah I found 20hz seemed to be the best compromise between animation speed and not using so much cpu time that the phone slows down to a crawl. Different phones might be able to run it faster though.

Nice app guys. Thanks.

May be change partical size? that would be cool. santa wish list?

+1 Supscription!
I really want this as a daily-use-wallpaper!
EDIT: Is there a way to make it more blurry, so it looks like the thumbnail here: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/mesmerize-your-friends-with-liquid-physics-lwp-for-android/ and not like this http://www.xda-developers.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Liquid-Physics.png ???

I had some minor issues with my incredible, but most of the bugs seem to be gone!
I just grabbed it for my Incredible too. For $1.31 you can't loose and even if it doesn't work well with my Incredible these devs need support so they will keep cranking out the killer apps
EDIT: Absolutely stunning on my Incredible. I don't know what the problem was supposed to be but it is running great for me.

The original bug I had was with the first release. "Orientation Mode" was getting stuck, but he fixed it with the 2nd release. the 3rd release should be avail soon. I had him put the warning just in case if someone else ran into the issue.

What device? I used it all day today using the accelerometer input just to see how it did and I got just under 10 hours of heavy use. While the battery does take a hit it is still very much usable on my HTC Incredible.
Seemed to hit the battery really hard for the first 50% and then toned way down after that. Not sure why.
I use the INC. I'm plauged with terrible battery life. I'm going to remove SkyRaider and see if that's what it is. I have no idea, but I'm only getting about 8 hours or so with NORMAL use, with the JuiceDefender on...

A power drain of -6mA to -10mA is very small considering the normal drain is somewhere in the line of -4mA to -6mA for my phone/configuration.

This is the free version. The limitation to the free version is that the special modes ( Lightning Strikes and Electric Sparks ) last for a limited time after each time you apply them. You can always re-enable them again, no limit there. For supporting the developers of this live wallpaper and removing this limitation, consider a small donation of $0.99.

One issue,it wont let me upgrade to the full wallpaper via the settings ?
Sweet!
Getting error when I try to get the full version though.
Homescreen lags on Desire..transitions trough homescreens very slow...and yes i have enough memory
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks everyone for the responses!
The cool thing for me is that this live wallpaper works fast even on my lowly MyTouch3G... it should even work fast on the G1.
Escort82, Are you using a custom ROM? Also, are you using setCPU?
as usual lags the home screen for launcherpro but what else is new there.
honestly the quality is kinda lacking. it's incredibly pixelated and i normally have the honeycomb wallpaper on my N1 and though the gradients get banded, it's not anywhere near as bad as this.
great concept and i'd love to run it, but it really needs some work on the quality of the graphics.
@Marct77 & @MartinW81 The Donate version is now published. Please try again. Thank you for your support!
@neok44 The issue with the quality is because we initially wanted something under one mb. I had to compress the pictures as much as possible.
As we speak, I am preparing an HD version which will be available within moments and which, I am sure, will meet your expectations.
Thank you.

HD-version will be great.
Tip for further development:
An ability to choose color on the background as well, black, grey, green etc.
Question is, will a HD-version be harder on the lag? I'm getting some lag on homepage scrolling, but not more than other LWP's. (N1 on CM7 and ADW EX)
Hi MartinW81,
I'll let nemuro address the other points, but an HD-version should not be harder on the lag. I'm suspecting that I'm being too aggressive on the framerate, which is causing slowdowns (this LWP is pushing 60fps). I'm investigating and future versions should be more homescreen-friendly.
Hi MartinW81,
Your idea would be a great feature, however it would greatly gain distance from the original Honeycomb look we had in mind when we developed this.
Take this LWP as a celebration of the newest Android in the making.
Thank you for your thoughts.

v0.4
Fireworks for Perfect Score(10/10)
I just wanted to say that I found a hole in your no image/url linking for users with less than 8 posts. all you need is to is to have https hosting. linking android market uploaded images worked and I also used freevps.us for the qrcode.
Sorry to triple post but, is anybody interested in testing and giving me feedback about my application?

The only problems I was having was with division. My code with division is not very efficient so whenever you select division hard, it takes 3-4 sec to make all 20 problems. And the only problems it comes up with is dividing by 2 or 3. I will work on this in the future.
update coming soon(probably tomorrow)
changelog(not final):
v0.2:
Custom Difficulty
Changed problem style(ex. "1.)5+5" to "1) 5+5" )
change results font size
changed problem making algorithms
-no repeats in a row
-better division problems
-faster load speeds
Fixed extra toasting
Locked Edittexts after submitted results
Changed amount of questions from 20 to 10
Added Holo Theme for 3.0+
changed game UI
Posted update to android market. Waiting for it to publish. Once it publishes, I will update the first post.
difficulty level helps keeps my brain sharp. lol

Any Feedback? Anything anyone would like to see added?
Tried it on an Asus Transformer TF101 tablet. The startup screen, shows in landscape, so everything is sideways. It won't scroll or show any options but addition, subtraction and multiply.
It seems interesting, but I can't do any but the above 3 options.

Thanks for the feedback. I updated the one in the market to 0.3.1. This fixes landscape orientation. It should be up in a few hours.
Updated to v0.3.1
I need someone to test this on a tablet to see how well it formats.
Hey! Landscape works now on Asus Transformer TF101.
BTW, playing around with the old version (before your update), lack of landscape usability was only when using the docking station (keyboard). Otherwise the game worked fine. It is now good with or without the dock.
One other suggestion because my 9 year old like this, as a 10 or 15 min game.
Perhaps some sort of fireworks or "Yipee!" should you get all 10/10 for that level?
Might keep them more interested? This one may sound odd, but how about some sort of trivia given at the end should 10/10 score? Something along those lines.
Thanks for the game,
ers

This started off as a bit of a physics experiment, but I found it quite fun to play with and decided to turn it in to a
live wallpaper. The pictures don't really show what it's like, it's quite hard to explain, the android acts like gel and
reforms itself after you break it with your finger. The time it takes to do this, dot size, color, background color and
android size can all be change to your liking. I encourage you to try it as words and pictures don't really explain
it well, please let me know what you think! It's not my best wallpaper, but it's certainly quite unique.
Let me know if you have a new shape suggestion.
Premium version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.suffick.nodepremium
Currently has a few extra features, help me make it better with your suggestions.
If anyone tests this on a tablet, please let me know if the android needs to be bigger, thanks.
please link to apk for download this walpaper if can.
@suffick : first of all a big 'hahahahhahahahahah' because i just loved the idea.. i downloaded and installed the app. The only thing is that i would love to get more live wallpaper like these.
I never used live wallpaper because of battery drain but this app would really force me to use it

I'll try, does changing the dot size affect lag at all?

It is not really laggy but at times feel distorted. Meaning the dots scatter here and there. rather it should be a bit smooth while scatter or what you call leaving its original position.

Ok, I'll see if I can fix it, thanks.
Wow not bad! Love the features of it.
Problem :
Lags a little
When I move my finger quickly along the Android body, it created puddle/big dots on the body rather than trails
Features :
Ability to enlarge the whole Android body

Yea, I may be able to improve it a little but not by much, but to be able to process that many touch points in such a short amount of time the device needs to be lightning fast. I'll see if I can improve it. Glad you like it.

thanks man, i haven't come across any bugs as of now:good:
some suggestions:
more supported images. if you can.
option to add user photos by somehow playing with saturation and threshold perhaps(i'm not sure how exactly this may be done)
anyway nothing less than 5 stars

Thank you very much.
That's a good idea, although it may be laggy depending on the image, I'll play around with it and see.
v1.2
- Huge performance improvement, you should be able to drag your finger across the screen much faster without the skipping effect.
- Added the option to alter touch size (the area of effect when you touch the screen).
- Added the option to toggle random dot placement on start.
- Increased the dot size and spacing range for larger screens.

Coming from App Tester Thread. I've tested it on my HTC EVO 3D, seems working perfectly. Maybe you could make a better GUI. I will give you a rating at play store too and I could help you with the german description at store if you contact me
Works as it should, design is good.
Nothing more to say
App works great on sgs3 SCH-1535:thumbup:
sent from the dark side of the moon.
Works fine on my device,
You propably could add extra scale lines on the other sides of the screen, now you only have 1 scale on 1 screen, sometimes it could be handy if you have 2 lines

Keep up the great work!!!

Nice app! Battery drain seemed unnecessarily high though. My phone showed the app used 9% of the battery drain and only had the app open for a min or so. Also, as a suggestion any thoughts about adding in a simple rulered protractor? eg. draw a line 3cm long at 36° ?
Great idea for an app!
---- Edit ----
Forgot to mention, tested it on Nexus 4 with Paranoid Android, didn't know about how well it would cope with changed DPI settings but it worked correctly =)

I will look at battery usage and thank you for your suggestion, I'll think about adding protractor.
Dude, you disappointed me... why you didn't put 1:18 scale ... just kidding.
Very useful app for collectors, It would be great if you add 1:18 scale as well. Car collectors can't live without that scale, you know.
Keep up the good work, thanks.

Could anyone check if German version works and looks correctly?
Good
Works fine on Nexus 7. Need second rule, so you can drag both of them from left and right.

NEW in 1.6:
- NEW feature: protractor for angles measurement
- More power efficient - less battery drain
- Nicer fonts
The ruler was not to scale on my Atrix HD. All linear measurements were just under half scale when on the 1:1 setting. The protractor seemed correct, but it would have been nice to have some measurements that don't require input, i.e. lines at 30°, 60°, etc. Also a bit slow to respond.

Could you check it by changing between scales, returning to 1:1 and checking if scale is still wrong?
