im just curious to kno when we over clock this phone with temp root ...are we only over clocking one processor? im asking this because I've been reading that gingerbread doesn't even use both cores...and we have to wait until ice cream sandwich for both cores to be used like there supposed to be...I kno some games utilize both cores, but for the most part we only have a "single" core phone?

I'm interested in underclocking/disabling a core. Seeing how that would play out on battery life.
A post I found online says it nicely:
Right now, the android sdk (2.3) provides no means to use more than one CPU core.
Still, multicore CPUs will increase performance because background processes can use CPU time on the core not being used by the running app.
This also applies to garbage collection (GC) which happens periodically (I guess you can trigger it manually too) whilst an app is running. With more than one core, the GC won't block the app which makes it feel "smoother".
I remember reading about Google's plans to improve multicore-support in android 2.4. It will take some time for existing apps to use it though (like it's happened with desktop applications).

As you can now see, even though the device is dual core, the OS and any applications won't make -full- use of both cores until they are designed to do so. Just like most applications these days won't utilize a quad core processor on your desktop. You are correct in saying that some games are designed to use both, which is noticeable. I don't see why an overclock wouldn't affect both cores.
By the way, your title is full of fail "Gingerbread only using one core?" would have been more suitable, since the device itself has nothing to do with how the OS utilizes its hardware.
I wonder if within the development here we can actually get that working?

Get what working, the overclock on both cores? Or Gingerbread using both cores?
If A: Yes (once S-OFF update comes, or temporarily with Fr3vo until then)
If B: No.
haha I thought about that after I posted..I kno how some pple are on here...easy to flame ya...which is why I don't post often..just read...but thanks for the info...I figured that was the case...can't wait to see what this phone is really capable of....s-off will be here sooner then later

I agree with you.
It would be nice if both cores ramped up to full speed when even only one is needed.
So in basic terms..
SGSII is a monster of CPU power....
you say its only using 1 core, and SGSII scores about 2-3 times more than our HTC Sensation...
When icecream will be released, the samsung galaxy S ii will socre even higher than our sensation....
I do not think android 2.3 is using one core for sure its using both .( even if the OS doesn't support )

Wait, huh? Are you saying that you think the GS2 is using both cores, and the sensation is only using one? That would completely explain the benchmark scores. Bring on 2.4

Where did you see a benchmark score where the SGSII is 2-3 times higher than the HTC Sensation?
The only one that I have checked was CF-Bench (which supports dual core) and the SGSII was about 20% higher. Certainly not 200%-300% higher.

this is gonna be a forever argument between the sensation and the gsII...on paper the sensation has better hardware ..Google it..its all over the forum ...the software is not optimized for the phone.with that being said..neither is the gsII...unless its running honeycomb somehow or ice cream sandwich ...gingerbread its self is the issue...now touchwiz may utilize both cores..im not sure..that may be why the gsII seems way smoother....just wait until this BL is unlocked...this phone will be monster
Do any of you guys remember this: MS update - KB896256?
I remember what that did for my laptop.
Worked real well.
Hello i just wonder if it's possible to get more ram acces on htc sensation in the most rom you have like 560 ram, the phone have a kapasitet off 768 mb ram, if you can get more ram free the phone will be faster i think. Can some devoper answer me on that question if it possible to do that?
You don't think that a dev would get us more RAM if he could do that. Some of the total RAM is used for system processes and will never show up as available.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
More ram doesn't mean more speed.
If you deleted a lot of HTC stuff i looks like you get more speed with more ram available.
That isn't true, with those deleted apps you also kill a lot of background processes.
Thats the cause of speeding up.
On the other had your GPU also takes some ram if you increase it to gain more ram your GUI will be horrible.
Looking at the Bricked kernel which has even taken more ram to increase smoothness when playing games ect.
i have an idea
It's not exactly how much ram you have.. its about how much free ram. I'm running what's in my signature and I also have this app called app quarantine that helps. Maybe look into it? Try it out.
Also arhd Roma and fauxs latest kernels give extra RAM with zram and zcache
I must say everybody here complain too much..
I have O3D and till now the only thing that really sucked was that LG didn't
supply Gingerbread in time!
My advice is to root your device and install some RAM manager (like 'AutoKiller Memory Optimizer' and set to "Ultimate" preset).
With the device superb memory processing your device will work better than any device I've seen (and I have Galaxy-S2 also that run not as smooth as my O3D).
Hope it will help someone..
Thanks for the advice, will give it a try.

Seriously...s2 doesn't run as smooth? It has twice the ram and a faster cpu / gpu so it should beat optimus 3D.

Hey Dave,
The fact that S2 have twice the RAM (can have even much more) doesn't metter and the cpu is almost the same, even LG have 'texas instruments' hardware which is very high quality if you familiar.
As long as you have enough free RAM (for this you need only the kind of Memory optimizer app as 'AutoKiller Memory Optimizer') your device run's better than S2. it's a fact, try and see

I would highly recommend against doing that. Most RAM managers simply kill processes until the set amount of memory is free - pretty much preventing all multitasking. Most apps are cached when exited, so they can be quickly switched to later, they usually don't use any battery. Android will close most unnecessary apps by itself if more RAM is required.

Imo, the SGS2 is much smoother than the O3D. Pretty much all games run well on it, while some games such as GTA3 (Full effects enabled + Max view distance) and dungeon defenders don't run that well on the O3d. GPU Overclocking is also possible on the SGS2, but not possible on the O3D - Even if it were, i doubt the already overclocked sgx540 (200 stock > 300mhz) can be oc'd as much as the Mali 400.
The SGS2 is also much more optimized than the O3D - Touchwiz is mostly smooth, even with a Live wallpaper, while the stock LG Launcher seems to be laggy. The camera also doesnt take ages to start up.
Also, im pretty sure most complaints are about battery life. My O3D only lasts around 1-3 hours with screen on - even worse than the DHD.
What are we complaining about?
Battery life
lousy Support from LG
I am still officially waiting in Australia for the gingerbread update
my phone under froyo 10k-j restarted over 20 times a day
under Gingerbread I missed out on phone calls and sms
and the list goes on.....
so please don't go around lecturing us as ungrateful to LG for this wonderful phone that I paid $800 for.
I have switched 2 month ago back to my Iphone 4 as my main phone,
only because of the good Devs at Cyanogen I am now wanting to use the phone more and I am going to make it my main phone again.
LG makes good hardware but the software side of things really sux.
and regarding your recommendation to use task killers to free ram tells me a lot how much you know about android 2.2 and above.

Hi All,
I think you guy's took it much more personally than I meant..
It's just an advice that you can use or choose not to use.
I had some issues with the device speed and after a while I found what I think to be the best setup for the device and I shared my opinion:
1) upgrade to gingerbread (V21a).
2) Root your device.
3) Install 'AutoKiller Memory Optimizer' and set to "Ultimate" preset.
Ever since I did it my O3D work great. and with no offence to big fans of S2 but I think it operate even better since.
Thanks
Howdy everyone,
i happened to come across an app on the market called CPU Gauge and this demonstrates to you exactly what each core on your phone is doing at all times, even in your notification bar at all times. Now i have noticed no matter what i do there only ever seems to be 1 core running which is pretty pants i reckon. how can i enable it to run dual cores all of the time? i dont understand it personally, why have a dual channel architecture if its hardly ever used? and surely it having to decide whether to use one core over two and to send data down both channels or just the one is probably a reason why we get lag? i am probably completely wrong but id rather the cpus always be on and drain battery if it improves overall performance

Though a mod will move this thread please post questions in the general section this is for development purposes only..
But if what you say is true i will have to look into this. What rom are you currently running?
Just a rooted/overclocked LG stock gingerbread rom.
For me it shows 2 Cores working ,but second is ON only when needed (as it should be) So its OK. Lags are because of poor ram managment on LG software, I recommend Rushdroid ROM.
What I know, Android 2.3 and below does not provide a support for multi cores. However, ICS does support it. So, I think the phone will run much better when the ICS update comes.

nope. thasts only an urban legend But it can improve performance at some points, but I would be rather sceptic. Custom roms must be always better (what they are doing making software, making it slower on purpose? go Samsung way and hire cm team members)
In games it uses both cores but im dissapointed that when testing swapping between different apps and web browsing seemed to all be using just the one core, and that was with lags inbetween swapping from for instance gallery to browser. I love this phone great specs but it annoys me more and more to think LG really did have no clue when it came down to putting it all into action. is there any way to have 2 cores on at all times or atleast change the values that decide when to use second core/channel.
If anything it makes for an interesting discussion

It has a partial support, not 100%, and the proof is that all dual core phones which received ICD update, got a huge improvement in the performance, as their users said.

The processor works as it should be, all cores when needed. Check System Panel app. Ram is the issue here. On stock it will be always laggy. On rushdroid and samba there is good ram management. Almost 250mb for the user. On stock i doubt if there is 130mb free available.
@up: there is no evidence that GB supports 1 core only and ICS multiple cores. A better performance on ICS can be due to the bigger optimizations, and hw support (that can be buggy) like gpu enabled scrolling etc.
But Ive heard that ics supports fully multicores, and that is an urban legend for me (no evidence) Ics can be just more optimized than gingerbread (and more like honeycomb which was quite fast)

you are correct cores are working as they should be not a problem here at... Gingerbread supports multicore and does use the cpu to the max when needed, you don't need to run both your cores all the time if that was the case you would need to charge your phone every 3 hours....
The issue with our optimus 3d is it needs ram tweaks to keep it smooth, 512mb ram is good i am not complaining because it's dual channel and so on so the ram speed is amazing just to free up ram we have tweaks...
Also the cpu is used to the max when needed, when you make a call you do not need both cores working at the same time that would be pointless. But when you play games, browse the net and bench your device all cores are used at the same time...
if you want to try it (see the difference) with both cores enabled ,(and cpu speed at max) try system tuner app , in cpu setting put governor to "performance" the first core will go to max speed , then go to active tweak and there is an option to force all cpu on , try it , it will be hard for the battery... when you put governor back to hotplug , the second core will return on demand (on/off) . if you want to do it again after you have to redo all step and turn the force all cpu on off and on again...
i'm on v21D on rushdroid 3.6.3. Both cores show up as working. 1 core ususally hits 1.4ghz and 2nd one upto 1ghz during regular processing. Great app btw tnx for letting us know

Its not neccessary to use dual core all the times ,using dual core for small task degrade the performance that increasing. Since our phone have dual memory the cache plays an important role in deciding which core should be used.
Hi. After a year of having my S5 mini I am done. It is old and using 2012 processor in 2016 is not a good idea. So I looked at the phones and I decided to buy S7(Exynos model) for a quite some time.
BY YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE, can you say:
Will it run 3D (like C-OPS) games on max graphics on 60FPS?(Or 60FPS at all?(with low graphics etc.))
What are the most common bugs/glitches/problems on it?
Are they that bad that you would recommend to avoid S7?
If the device is not good by your opinion, can you suggest a different one?
Is it worth the price?
Why do I ask these specific questions? Because I don't have enough money to change the phone every year or even earlier so I want to have high end device that would handle minimum 2 years.
P.S.(if it will help) I can pick it up at electronics shop in my country for 400 euro(discount!).

I think the phone is worth the price, but you also have the one plus 3.. s7 runs all games on max graphics easily.
Im in love with the phone and im sure that it will last few years
And.. I bought it one month ago and until now i had 0 bugs and errors.. non rooted btw

I found my s7 overheating at first but then I under clocked it a bit(STILL VERY FAST AND SMOOTH) and my issue was solved. You can also try coolify.
If you ask me, yes, it is worth buying if you have a 3 year old, slow smartphone, due for an upgrade and features like 'Better Low Light Photography' and 'Water Resistance'. The phone definitely looks promising enough and looks absolutely beautiful. Consider your pros and cons budget wise, but I think it's definitely worth the buy.

Those apps are all bull****, stay away from such stuff. The only way to lower heat is to lower performance, some apps might be able to underclock the CPU or change governor but those that claim to lower heat without root are just shady apps.
on topic: I bought the flat s7, exynos variant too and well, I'm not disappointed at all so far. Screen is amazing as expected, wifi/data speeds are top notch, battery is surprisingly good and most bloatware can easily be disabled now even without root thanks to this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro (careful with what you disable, some apps are obviously necessary for the phone to function and disabling them can result in features not working or even bootlops, make sure you know what it is you're disabling)
as for cons, well the price will always sting so there's that, it also seems like the GPU on the exynos variant is slightly weaker than the one in the snapdragon variant but I'm not a big gamer so I can't comment much on that and it can occasionally stutter a bit if you're performing certain tasks, like having multiple apps updating while gaming or right after you apply a new theme but those are special occasions where the CPU is obviously being stressed. Day to day usage, there's not much if any lag at all.

What about RAM? How much is left for the user? I heard that's only 1GB... Now you will say "That's enough RAM!" It is. But the fact that 4GB RAM device leaves only 1GB free is unbelievable.
My Windows 8 PC x64 uses only 2GB when no apps are running. And my old Vista x32 used 900MB only! Even my S5 mini with Touchwiz when no apps are running uses 800MB or even lower. I even got 563MB RAM using only some time in its life. I don't know what the problem is but I think this is all Samsung's fault. Like why the hell they need to modify Android so much?! Just create a slightly modified Stock ROM with some additional apps like Smart Manager and Galaxy Apps and change to Samsung wallpapers and that's it.

You can't compare ram manager of Windows and Android systems, very different! In Android free ram is a wasted ram! So..... more stuff in ram....more quickly it opens app or background process, if the user needs more ram to open a hungry app the system will close other stuff to satisfy the user needs. Is this really important in the rom....ram manager! Samsung have to do a good job to give us a very tune and balance ram manager for the system running smoothly.
