Galaxy S Editing root files - General Questions and Answers

Greetings fellow "Androiders"
I have a Galaxy S running Froyo 2.2 JP6 rooted, and Voodoo lagfix installed.
Recently I saw the GTGTouchwiz UI mod and decided that I really needed the landscape home screen.
So I followed the instructions along until the point where I was supposed to rename the TouchWiz30Launcher APK and ODEX files to .BAK files.
I used a "downloaded" version of Root Explorer (please, I do not own a credit card and am not legally capable of obtaining one by myself either so don't judge..) and went on to try and rename the files.
The first time I tried, it gave me a "no permission" type message saying I had no permission to tamper with any files. I gave the phone a reboot, retried and still, no permission. So I went around on the forums looking for answers and I read that I was supposed to change permission from "R/O" to "R/W" at the top of the screen, but there were no such options for me as in the app it only said "Mounted as R/O". I spent plenty of time looking for ANY options that allowed me to change permission and there were none.
Then I went on to download another version of RE and this time, I was allowed to rename files, the permission was set to "R/W" once within the system folder and I did not have to change any options. But when I refreshed, both files turned back to their original names (the rename was basically ignored). I also tried using Android Mate to no avail (same effects as RE) and now, I'm also trying with Super Manager.
But here I encountered another problem, when I tried to enable the "ROOT function" from settings, it gave me the message "The ROOT function in this program is not support you device or system image", btw that is not my grammatical error, that is exactly the message I get from Super Manager.
Now I have absolutely no idea what this "system image" of mine is, I'm still a complete noob to Android and all the concepts. So if I'm being oblivious to some simple error I made, please don't flame me or anything
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

Bumpidy bump bump

Anyone help?

Just reading through the document now, seems the first link, http://www.soft‐go.com/get/Samsung‐Kies_79632.html isn't working. Not sure if the site is just down right now or if there's a mistake.

I Fixed it
A few small things:
Intel should be intel.
Under CPU Optimization:
"Samsung’s CPU is set by default the run at 1gHz."
The should be to.
Sideloading:
"(don’t forget that after you install it from the market you still have to go to your app drawer and run busybox once so it installs)."
Should this be after you download it from the market?
ClockworkMod Recovery:
"ClockworkMod written for us by a developer that goes by the name of Koush"
Missing is.
"This gent puts a ton of work into helping us captivate owners out"
Replace puts with put and Capitalize Captivate.
Changing Your Messaging Ringtone:
"well the ones that matter anyway.."
Extra period.
Other than that, excellent guide. I'll definitely be using it when my Captivate arrives.

Thanks! I fixed all those errors but I'm not gonna upload the new version just yet because I will keep finding more errors so it just seems wasteful. I did not actually write most of the guide myself I just formatted it so there may be some mistakes I didn't pick up on.

Hi,
Thanks for publishing this. It looks very useful, similar to Energy ROM.. But I am very new to Android phones (trying this on Samsung Captivate from AT&T, bought yesterday). I am running windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I exactly followed this guide. But somehow I am still not able to see the sd card. I tried placing the update.zip at Computer\SGH-I897\Phone and shut down the phone and tried restarting the phone by holding the up/down keys as well as power button. But after selecting reinstall packages it said could not find /sdcard/update.zip.. Pls held. Again very sorry if I did some mistake..

The SD card is simply the root directory of your phone. You do not need to open a folder, it is the highest folder you can place it in. Hope that helps
Somehow it was not able to find the sdcard root. Then I realized that you mentioned something called as Droid Explorer, I searched for it and installed it on my PC. But when I opened Droid Explorer, my device was not recognized, then I clicked on link on the explorer window, upon watching that video I enabled the USB Debugging, then I was able to see my device, then I selected connect to my device. After that I saw an explorer but it had empty root and I was not able to copy anything. There was a menu button at the top row named "Transfer to device or Copy to device" I selected that and selected update.zip file and tried to transfer. Something happened but still explorer was empty. Then from my phone Top slide down menu I selected mount USB storage and I started seeing windows explorer on my PC. Then apart from other folders I could see a folder sd in the root. Then I again put update.zip in the root.
Then followed the restart sequence, this time it found the file but exited after Signal 7. It was trying to asert something but could not find the correct model number I guess. My cell phone's model number is Samsung i897.
Please help

I did not write the PC instructions, so I can not help you (I only have a Mac). But the person who did can probably help you his username is systoxity.
Because not enough errors were found to make it worthwhile to update the PDF i will wait till tomorrow to fix the minor errors.
Good source of information
Thank you for putting this together. I am going to sticky this for the time being.
For installing the latest version of busy box, you should include that before the instructions for running titanium backup...the latest version of busybox installed from the market will work with titanium backup so theres no need to have to click the "problems" button...this way you wont have to do the busybox download step twice...should also save a few megs since titanium backup wont have its own copy of busybox installed BTW nice guide
You can also just mount the phone memory using windows explorer and move the file over. I was never able to get droid explorer to transfer the file. It always said it went but then was never there.
Anyway all I did was connected just as I was going to connect to kies but then when windows asked me what I wanted to do I clicked on open file view and dropped updated.zip on my phone.
Only issue that I had with rooting was I accidentally opened the file in windows(winrar). After I moved the file over it found it and attempted to install it but then exited with an error(do not remember exact error), but had to do with mounting. Anyway I re-downloaded file and saw file size was different. After I moved the file over again everything went great. I still haven't removed bloat-ware and such but thats next on the agenda.
Also I was on windows 7 64 bit, saw some other users in other threads saying they had issues connecting the phone. Everything so far has worked great for me
Thank you very much for this handy pdf file!
Somelinks aren't working
First of all I have to say very good guide for noobs!
1. when I downloaded the update.zip folder I didn't work I guess because the name of Samsung captivate is not in the folder or something. So I just downloaded the other file from the forums.
2. Link to CPU optimization doesn't work.
3. I downloaded the droid explorer. It connected to my phone but I was unable to transfer anything. So I just tapped on the USB connected in the notification bar and mounted the phone. This allowed me to use windows explorer to transfer files. I believe one can transfer files by selecting the option of Samsung Kies under USB settings.
I got all your feedback. It will all be corrected by tomorrow night.
Cool guide however the rumor is the GPS only gets turned on when pulling up an App that uses it, so that step in the "battery saving" section might not be necessary.
Also you may want to replace Market Enabler with Market Access. It's a rehash of Market Enabler but also has a Set on Boot option that keeps it persistent versus being reset each time.
You also Might want to add a Tips/Tricks Section..
Here You can put some cool tips like the one i found out about backlight control.

[Q] Simplest way to change a system file ?

Hi, I have already a thread elsewhere but without useful answers about a very strange problem:
in my Agenda, the alarm sound is "On time". I can change this, but some minutes later, I found that the sound is again "On time". I've tried everything possibile without success. This was on my Galaxy S on Froyo 2.2.1.
Last night I finally got the official update on Kies, and installed Gingerbread 2.3.3 (I9000XXJVO), but the strange "On time" problem is always here.
But, finally a ray of light because on Froyo I was missing the "3 keys combo" so I never tried difficult ways to have root. Now on Ginger I have the 3 keys combo and immediately got root.
Now my idea is: I will keep this f.....g "On time" sound setting, but I think I can now CHANGE the content of the file "on time.mp3" (or what else) with another sound, overwriting it.
Which is the easyiest way ? Easyiest software ? Where is this file ??
thank you
Ser
Really nobody can help ??
Does not seem hard !
Please !
Install a file-manager that supports root (File Expert, for example). The file you want is then probably in /system/media/audio/alarms, or maybe on some other folder in /system/media/audio. You need to remount the /system partition as read/write (the file-manager will have an option for that somewhere), then you can mess with the files there. After you've replaced the alarm sound, remount the partition back to read-only.

build prop help?

What's up? Well I am a supper newb here so bear with me on this one please. This is the deal I am trying to edit the build prop with "es file explorer" so I can make my g2x think it's a different phone for two reasons, one is so I can get skype with video chat on it & second is so I can get neflix on it. When I Go & do it The Xda Way & Hit Save I Get A Message Saying "Error occurred when trying to save the file. It Will not be saved". Also, here is some info about my phone I am running the ota 2.3.3, I am thinking that's why I cannot do it? If anyone can help me out I will appreciate it thanks in advance. Oh & by the way I did root the phone, if that makes any difference.

You can't get skype with video working, and if you do please PM on how to haha, second you have to go into settings and check "root helper" or like "root something" and right below that check "make writable" this is assuming you have a rooted phone, wont work without it. Sorry.

use root explorer to edit...... go to system and the tab at the top touch it.. the folder will become r/w... then long press the build prop and open in text editor.... it will automagically save the old prop as a backup...

I can't get root explorer because you need a credit card to buy it & I do not have one & you can't get it billed to the account like a lot of apps let you do. PS I got it free & the newest one I am going to try it out now what you said
Be very careful. Some roms, especially stock and also some CM roms, won't work if you change the name in the build.prop. This info is used for booting the phone. You could render the phone in a bootloop or just locked up at boot. Better to leave the build.prop alone if you are not an expert in Android development.
You can also change build prop using root tools. Google search for the apk or download aptoide from market and dl from there if the server hasn't already been killed.
I changed mine a couple months ago to htc visions for netflix purposes, long story short I went back to p999. I suggest you leave yours as is.
Sent from my MIUI G2x
First go to the market get a app called 4share download register with real email the once ur in hit menu search root explorer tap on root explorer it will install its free also check xda forums for zip file that will automatically root ur phone (gx2) in cwm just choose install zip from SD,choose the root zip u. Just downloaded and ur good

[Solved] HELP: Cannot get to Webtop mode in ICS!!

I have tried this on both the pure/stock first ICS leak and a custom ROM based upon that leak (ScV7) and in both cases, when I connect my Atrix 2 to the Lapdock 500, it *very* briefly displays the correct Webtop 3.0 welcome screen, and then just abandons that and jumps right into "mirror mode" with the notification bar still at the top as usual, and everything blown up to ridiculous size. Exactly ONCE it went into true Webtop/ICS Tablet mode as it was supposed to (notification bar at bottom), but every time after that it just insists on Mirror mode and doesn't under any circumstances allow me to choose Webtop 3.0, in other words ICS tablet mode.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
This turned out to be related to the "Entitlement Check" which blocked Webtop from starting up. I disabled that check and Webtop now loads correctly.

The entitlement check is a setting built into the AT&T ROM by default to check whether you have permission from your carrier to do things like Wifi and USB Tethering. Why it does this check upon connecting a Webtop accessory I'm not quite sure, but anyway...
Things you will need to disable it:
ES File Explorer (free from play store)
aSQLiteManager (free from play store)
1. Launch ES File Explorer and within its settings, grant it full root permissions (near the bottom of settings, go in and check all four checkboxes).
2. From ES File Explorer navigate upward out of your SD card and onto the root of your device, then go into Data/Data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases
3. Copy the "settings.db" file found there over to your SD card
4. Using aSQLiteManager select "Open Database" and pick that settings.db file on your SD card.
5. Select "settings" from the four tables you are presented with
6. Select "Data" from the top button menu
7. You'll see a long list of crap. Hit PgDn untiul you see line 113 "entitlement_check". Hit Edit and change the value from 1 to 0.
7b. Also go to line 70 "usb_entitlement_check" and change the value from 1 to 0 as well.
8. While you're here, also go to lines 117 and 118 that start with "dun" and change them both from 0 to 1. This is not necessary for Webtop but will enable wifi hotspot tethering.
9. Exit aSQLiteManager, go back into ES File Explorer and this time copy the modified "settings.db" back into the previous/original folder from Step 2, overwriting the old file.
10. Exit ES File Explorer, reboot your device and Webtop should work as expected.
Fix for Webtop disappearing

Hello everybody.
Well, I must say I have an MB865 (AT&T Branded) quite a long time ago and just a couple of days ago I upgraded to official ICS. Loved it!
But I did not remember that the main reason I rooted my phone when it was in GB it was because wifi tethering. I remember doing something similar with SQLite modifying entitlement_check from 1 to 0, and just doing that It worked.
Now, I see, process is the same, but including now usb_entitlement_check and both lines starting with dun, so I rooted again, and already done that SQLite thing, but it's still not working.
First, I don't know if it's supposed to appear a notification when wifi tethering or usb tethering gets turned on just like it used to be like back in GB, but I'm getting no notification, only when a device "connects to my phone"
I can surf any website from my phone, and devices connecting to it say "connected" but websites don't load, nothing loads. Already tried in PC, Mac, and phones... same to all of them. Did I miss/skip something?
didnt work
Do it as described twice by change line113 from 1 to 0, phone freeze on "rethink possible" screen, must make factory reset. Firmware is 125.en.us 4.0.4 +root (mb865) reason - need for use lapdock 500 in webtop mode when connected over mobile internet connection (will popup message about entitlement check failed then go to mirror mode)
Can provide something for off that check? Maybe must rename field as "disabled"? Or one post on forum say "go to system/app and rename entitlementservice.apk and it's related file. (one other with a similar name) to .bak files and reboot." - which one works correct?

From your description it sounds as though you may be trying to edit the settings.db file right in place on your phone, which could cause a reboot/freeze. You have to make sure to copy the settings file over to your SD card, use aSQLitemanager to edit that copied file, not the original one, and then copy the modified file back to the original location, over-writing the unmodified one.
Also, make sure that line 113 does in fact say what it's supposed to, namely "entitlement_check". Sometimes this property can appear on different lines depending on the rom/firmware in use, as can the others starting with "dun". So be sure to change the right property settings.
I have the Lapdock 500 as well with the the MB865 (AT&T unlocked running on Rogers in Canada) and use it all the time without issue after having made these changes. I wouldn't bother with renaming the entitlementcheck.apk as this only half helps, allowing you to activate webtop when connected but still not providing mobile data in this mode. Doing all three of those edits to the settings.db file and then rebooting, should fix everything.
thanks for answer, - i rename entitlementservice.apk to entitlementservice.bak and entitlementservice.odex to .odexbak (as mad try change to .bak but it deny and i think lost that method also, but huh :silly: its just cause have already .bak in same directory. ) direct on same directory by giving root access to file manager then reboot and check mobile connection, it works. will check again for that but seems it already works without any entitlement checking.
I do strongly as posted, put file to sd card and make changes, line 113 was entitlement_check with value 1. after change i overwrite it to system directory but. finally must reset for get back phone to life, mmaybe i do something wrong. i do it after reset also
There is one strange what i catch is a weight of settings.db first was a 15kb but after fall and freeze then reset it was a 14kb.

In the Settings.db file, check that line 70 "usb_entitlement_check" is also set to 0 rather than 1.
I believe that in the stock ICS ROM this is how it is already set by default which is why I didn't include it in my main instruction set above in the first post. Nope I'm wrong.. just checked and on stock MB865 ROM it is set to 1, and should be changed to zero as well. I will edit my first post to include this extra step as a result.
uboat55, please let me know if this helps, although none of these changes should be causing crash/freezes in your device upon reboot, so there may still be something else going on.
may you excuse me cause i afraid for again freeze, its very hard to recover programms and other style which i use, i could hardly recover much of it, and it took much time for place icons programs, paswords etc. very hard.. i`m novice in that and dont know how easy recover all after reset. must learn that. But i check again mobile connection and can confirm that no any entitlement check found and lapdock works in webtop mode (not changed to mirror mode), seems renaming files succesful for that
In case you need another example of why CWM & Backup is useful....

Well, I followed the instructions, and saved the DB file back in the original location, and when I reboot the phone is is stuck at the 'Rethink Possible' screen. The phone is rooted (SU prompted me for changes) but is running the stock rom. Stupidly, I did not install CWM or make a backup, so how can I install a new rom or CWM or ?? to get things going again? I can go into the standard recovery / fastboot options menu.

Since you don't have a custom recovery installed, you'll have to flash the FXZ for your phone via RSD lite. Make extra sure that you have the correct FXZ because flashing the wrong one has a high probability of bricking your phone.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.
I downloaded the FXZ, and it is going again

Since you don't have a custom recovery installed, you'll have to flash the FXZ for your phone via RSD lite. Make extra sure that you have the correct FXZ because flashing the wrong one has a high probability of bricking your phone.

The computer would not recognize the phone using RSD, so I used the script found in another post on the site. Thanks for the input.

UI sound NOT working after changes...

Hi guys I'm new in this forum but I've seen it and followed it for a thousand times and now I'm gonna be part of it, so HI GUYS xD.
Well to start I've to say that after I rooted the device and so on, I decided to change the famous:
Lock.ogg
LowBattery.ogg
Unlock.ogg
Well I started using "Es explorer" and then I realized that I couldn't just copy paste and overwrite those file with my gallery OF: MGS
-I can't post the link after 10 POST xD-
- Well then I used "Root Browser" to do it and I could without any problem.
- I restart the device and didn't sound anything when I try to lock and unlock the device.
- I realized that "Root Browser" did change some permissions and then I changed them to leave it how it should. NEW
- I restarted again my device and nothing happen..........
- Then I replace them for the originals leaving the device how it was before working.
But now is not working when I lock or unlock the device why I rebooted several times so...
Can someone help? did I do something wrong or what? this is very weird....
I've fixed it in SETTING DEVICE SOUND UNLOCK SOUND...
Sorry guys I didn't see it.
