[Q] Simplest way to change a system file ? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi, I have already a thread elsewhere but without useful answers about a very strange problem:
in my Agenda, the alarm sound is "On time". I can change this, but some minutes later, I found that the sound is again "On time". I've tried everything possibile without success. This was on my Galaxy S on Froyo 2.2.1.
Last night I finally got the official update on Kies, and installed Gingerbread 2.3.3 (I9000XXJVO), but the strange "On time" problem is always here.
But, finally a ray of light because on Froyo I was missing the "3 keys combo" so I never tried difficult ways to have root. Now on Ginger I have the 3 keys combo and immediately got root.
Now my idea is: I will keep this f.....g "On time" sound setting, but I think I can now CHANGE the content of the file "on time.mp3" (or what else) with another sound, overwriting it.
Which is the easyiest way ? Easyiest software ? Where is this file ??
thank you
Ser

Really nobody can help ??
Does not seem hard !
Please !

Install a file-manager that supports root (File Expert, for example). The file you want is then probably in /system/media/audio/alarms, or maybe on some other folder in /system/media/audio. You need to remount the /system partition as read/write (the file-manager will have an option for that somewhere), then you can mess with the files there. After you've replaced the alarm sound, remount the partition back to read-only.

New to G1

Good afternoon to the G1 community. I just purchased my G1 yesterday through Tmobile and I have a couple question.
I just came from using a wing so I am pretty savy with wmo rom flashing and whatnot, but android is completely new to me. Now, of course i want to get the most out of my device. I must say, out of the box it is by far the best device that I have used. Even so, i know that there is some stuff that i am missing.
I have done some reading here in the forum, and i do know how to search, but im not clear on a couple things. For starters, I have been reading about Rooting my device. Now to be totally honest with you, i've read through the Rooting Thread but only walked away with I would love to have autorotate for my screen! I mean, truely what are the benefits to rooting the phone? Will i loose access to the "market" or loose any other functionality of the phone as it is now? Future updates?
In a perfect world i'd love to have the auto rotate feature.... the ability to change the way the program list slides up to maybe sliding panel, and an onscreen keyboard (such as chompsms) when i select a line to type in (whether im in the browser or anyother program.)
I Love the phone as it is.. so all in all, what functionality would i gain, and what would i loose? besides warranty of course
I apologize, i realized i may have put this in the wrong section!
1. Rooting you phone allows you to basically use it to the best of its capabilities. For example, you can change themes, boot image, auto rotate, multitouch, etc. You won't lose the market or any other functions after you root the phone. (To my knowledge, I see paid apps and such just fine on my phone.) You will continue to see future OTA updates, but if you download them, you will lose root access for your phone.
2. The "Cupcake" OTA release is planned for April (As has been discussed on the forums, may be true, may be false. TMobile is claiming its false, but Google controls the updates) If we ever recieve this update, then we will be able to get things such as an onscreen keyboard.
3. I'm not sure about changing the order of the way the apps are presented on the slide-up menu, but there are apps like ahome or dxtop that have alternate home styles, such as the "Iphone" style horizontal scrolling or multiple menu tabs.
Thanks, I do appreciate your prompt response!
if you want the best out of your phone root it.. but thats completely up to you.. when you root you'll be able to get the latest builds from JF anyway soo you'll never be out on whats new.. if anything you'll be a couple steps ahead of regular g1 users at all times
Just to verify.... The market is still available for apps after rooting.. Now I will loose root if I download from the market or just the "OTA" updates for the phone?
Also, i was going through the instructions for the process and got to the point where you upgrade to the latest build. So, i assume RC33 is US Tmo vs RC8 being for UK. What is ADP1.1? So is my choice between ADP1.1 and RC33?
you shouldn't even recieve an OTA update notification if you follow directions, so you don't have to worry about that, and many apps on the market are actually FOR root users and only root users so you will not lose market obviously. the greatest thing about getting root is that you can basically make your phone do anything you want(so long as you are comfortable with linux commands and aren't afraid to temporarily "brick" you phone) but even if you kust want autorotate you will need to root the phone and you will need to grab a JF update. there is an app that someone has written, almost completely idiot proof rooting, and i am trying to help it to be COMPLETELY idiot proof, if you want to try it out search app that roots your phone and it should pop up
Ok, so I have decided to go ahead and play with this and see what there is to offer.
I have successfully downgraded to the rc29 firmware and verified it in my phone. Now I have also done these instructions to get root;
Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:
Instructions:
Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
All files must be on the root of your SD card.
Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
Now of course i dont know if it was successfull cause it doesnt tell you. Now here is my problem. I am trying to upgrade the rc33 now but with NO LUCK! Now the instructions say to download the file, rename to update.zip and go into recover mode and run update. However it keeps giving me the error "Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad). I have downloaded two copies and this happens with both and the radio version.
What am i doing wrong? I have tried to rename the file on both the phone and the computer, with the extension .zip and without it but with no luck. I have the file directly on the root of the sd card. Do I need any other files on the sd card? or just the zip file?
I have read and read, but I have not found a clear explanations.
I'm not on a G1 (I'm on a Google dev phone that came rooted out of the box), and thus haven't gone through that process myself, but I seem to remember reading something about having to go through RC30/JFv1.3x and THEN to RC33/JFv1.4x. Not RC29 -> RC33/JFv1.4x directly.
I could very well be wrong though.
Ok, well I did get it to install.. still working on it...
Definitely wierd. I'll update when i finish!
I successfully went from rc29 to rc33 v 1.41 but realized that the newest is 1.42 so thats loading now.
Its odd, it seems that my problem was when i was in recovery mode, I would alt L to bring up the menu and alt s to update from sdcard. It didnt work for nearly 10 times.. then all the sudden instead up alt L to bring up the menu, i just did alt S and it booted. I didnt realize that linux was that sensitive! Other than that, i'm about to play with the new firmware.
So there is no way to get an onscreen keyboard like chompsms? I kinda found that hard to believe.
while it is SUGGESTED that you go from 29 to 30 to 33(what ever happened to 31 and 32?) it is not necessary, i am gonna assume you are on windows and you may be naming it update.zip.zip because extensions are hidden. try it after just naming it update, and also make sure that you unmount the phone correctly after you put the file on there, a lot of times it is still writing data when you yank it out, and that will cause the (bad) error. hope this helps. if you get a file not found error after naming it update then just put the .zip extension back on the file and make sure you unmount properly

This, and maybe you've downloaded the 'build environment' package.
At my first attempt I got the 'bad' message, too. I didn't know which one to pick up so my first try has been 'ADP1 build environment'. Later with 'ADP1' (not the build environment one) no problem. Now I'm going with the UK because I wanted the UI in german and because some market apps didn't download with ADP.

Just reading through the document now, seems the first link, http://www.soft‐go.com/get/Samsung‐Kies_79632.html isn't working. Not sure if the site is just down right now or if there's a mistake.

A few small things:
Intel should be intel.
Under CPU Optimization:
"Samsung’s CPU is set by default the run at 1gHz."
The should be to.
Sideloading:
"(don’t forget that after you install it from the market you still have to go to your app drawer and run busybox once so it installs)."
Should this be after you download it from the market?
ClockworkMod Recovery:
"ClockworkMod written for us by a developer that goes by the name of Koush"
Missing is.
"This gent puts a ton of work into helping us captivate owners out"
Replace puts with put and Capitalize Captivate.
Changing Your Messaging Ringtone:
"well the ones that matter anyway.."
Extra period.
Other than that, excellent guide. I'll definitely be using it when my Captivate arrives.

Thanks! I fixed all those errors but I'm not gonna upload the new version just yet because I will keep finding more errors so it just seems wasteful. I did not actually write most of the guide myself I just formatted it so there may be some mistakes I didn't pick up on.
i used this guide today and it delivered.

Hi,
Thanks for publishing this. It looks very useful, similar to Energy ROM.. But I am very new to Android phones (trying this on Samsung Captivate from AT&T, bought yesterday). I am running windows 7 ultimate 64bit and I exactly followed this guide. But somehow I am still not able to see the sd card. I tried placing the update.zip at Computer\SGH-I897\Phone and shut down the phone and tried restarting the phone by holding the up/down keys as well as power button. But after selecting reinstall packages it said could not find /sdcard/update.zip.. Pls held. Again very sorry if I did some mistake..

The SD card is simply the root directory of your phone. You do not need to open a folder, it is the highest folder you can place it in. Hope that helps
Somehow it was not able to find the sdcard root. Then I realized that you mentioned something called as Droid Explorer, I searched for it and installed it on my PC. But when I opened Droid Explorer, my device was not recognized, then I clicked on link on the explorer window, upon watching that video I enabled the USB Debugging, then I was able to see my device, then I selected connect to my device. After that I saw an explorer but it had empty root and I was not able to copy anything. There was a menu button at the top row named "Transfer to device or Copy to device" I selected that and selected update.zip file and tried to transfer. Something happened but still explorer was empty. Then from my phone Top slide down menu I selected mount USB storage and I started seeing windows explorer on my PC. Then apart from other folders I could see a folder sd in the root. Then I again put update.zip in the root.
Then followed the restart sequence, this time it found the file but exited after Signal 7. It was trying to asert something but could not find the correct model number I guess. My cell phone's model number is Samsung i897.
Please help

I did not write the PC instructions, so I can not help you (I only have a Mac). But the person who did can probably help you his username is systoxity.
Because not enough errors were found to make it worthwhile to update the PDF i will wait till tomorrow to fix the minor errors.
Good source of information
Thank you for putting this together. I am going to sticky this for the time being.
For installing the latest version of busy box, you should include that before the instructions for running titanium backup...the latest version of busybox installed from the market will work with titanium backup so theres no need to have to click the "problems" button...this way you wont have to do the busybox download step twice...should also save a few megs since titanium backup wont have its own copy of busybox installed BTW nice guide
You can also just mount the phone memory using windows explorer and move the file over. I was never able to get droid explorer to transfer the file. It always said it went but then was never there.
Anyway all I did was connected just as I was going to connect to kies but then when windows asked me what I wanted to do I clicked on open file view and dropped updated.zip on my phone.
Only issue that I had with rooting was I accidentally opened the file in windows(winrar). After I moved the file over it found it and attempted to install it but then exited with an error(do not remember exact error), but had to do with mounting. Anyway I re-downloaded file and saw file size was different. After I moved the file over again everything went great. I still haven't removed bloat-ware and such but thats next on the agenda.
Also I was on windows 7 64 bit, saw some other users in other threads saying they had issues connecting the phone. Everything so far has worked great for me
Thank you very much for this handy pdf file!
Somelinks aren't working
First of all I have to say very good guide for noobs!
1. when I downloaded the update.zip folder I didn't work I guess because the name of Samsung captivate is not in the folder or something. So I just downloaded the other file from the forums.
2. Link to CPU optimization doesn't work.
3. I downloaded the droid explorer. It connected to my phone but I was unable to transfer anything. So I just tapped on the USB connected in the notification bar and mounted the phone. This allowed me to use windows explorer to transfer files. I believe one can transfer files by selecting the option of Samsung Kies under USB settings.
I got all your feedback. It will all be corrected by tomorrow night.
Cool guide however the rumor is the GPS only gets turned on when pulling up an App that uses it, so that step in the "battery saving" section might not be necessary.
Also you may want to replace Market Enabler with Market Access. It's a rehash of Market Enabler but also has a Set on Boot option that keeps it persistent versus being reset each time.
You also Might want to add a Tips/Tricks Section..
Here You can put some cool tips like the one i found out about backlight control.

Galaxy S Editing root files

Greetings fellow "Androiders"
I have a Galaxy S running Froyo 2.2 JP6 rooted, and Voodoo lagfix installed.
Recently I saw the GTGTouchwiz UI mod and decided that I really needed the landscape home screen.
So I followed the instructions along until the point where I was supposed to rename the TouchWiz30Launcher APK and ODEX files to .BAK files.
I used a "downloaded" version of Root Explorer (please, I do not own a credit card and am not legally capable of obtaining one by myself either so don't judge..) and went on to try and rename the files.
The first time I tried, it gave me a "no permission" type message saying I had no permission to tamper with any files. I gave the phone a reboot, retried and still, no permission. So I went around on the forums looking for answers and I read that I was supposed to change permission from "R/O" to "R/W" at the top of the screen, but there were no such options for me as in the app it only said "Mounted as R/O". I spent plenty of time looking for ANY options that allowed me to change permission and there were none.
Then I went on to download another version of RE and this time, I was allowed to rename files, the permission was set to "R/W" once within the system folder and I did not have to change any options. But when I refreshed, both files turned back to their original names (the rename was basically ignored). I also tried using Android Mate to no avail (same effects as RE) and now, I'm also trying with Super Manager.
But here I encountered another problem, when I tried to enable the "ROOT function" from settings, it gave me the message "The ROOT function in this program is not support you device or system image", btw that is not my grammatical error, that is exactly the message I get from Super Manager.
Now I have absolutely no idea what this "system image" of mine is, I'm still a complete noob to Android and all the concepts. So if I'm being oblivious to some simple error I made, please don't flame me or anything
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.
Bumpidy bump bump

Nook Color CM7 on SD - Root?

Hi all -
Sorry for the noob question - I looked and could not find the answer.
I have CM7 installed on an SD card, mounted in a non-rooted Nook Color v1.2. Every thing is working great!
I am now trying to edit the build.prop file to get NetFlix working. However, after making the edits I cannot save the file. I assume that this is because of the lack of rooting.
My questions is... what do I need to root? Does the CM7 OS installed on the SD card need to be rooted? If so, how? I cannot find anything referencing this.
Or, is it that the Nook itself needs to be rooted? I can find documentation on this!
Any advice would be appreciated. I would like to avoid rooting the Nook itself if possible.
Thank you,
John
i have the same exact question, trying to do the exact same thing, modify build.prop on a nook color with CM7 on SD. i dont' understand what is actually "rooted" - is it the OS or the kernel or the boot loader???
thanks for any help!
Should I assume you figured out the solution already? If not, the easiest way I've found to edit the build.prop is to use Root Explorer. It's on the Google Marketplace. I believe it was a couple dollars, but well worth it.
When you open it, it will request super user permissions. Allow this. Browse to the system folder and then click the button at the top, "Mount R/W". Edit the build.prop file and save. Make sure to click the "Mount R/O" button to put it back into read-only mode. Then restart the device. Netflix should work fine then.
I go through this every time I install a nightly build, which has been quite frequent lately due to my geeky curiosity for new possible features. If I don't edit build.prop with "HTC Vision" and "HTC", the playback is in fast forward.
Hey Sonic - I'm having the same issue these two guys are. SU doesn't think the system is rooted (I'm using the latest nightly). Root Explorer doesn't give an option for RW, and when I try installing busybox, it barks that it isn't rooted. Even ROM manager (i know, ugh) barks about root not being there in the nightly.
I attempted to roll back to the 703 stable build, but for some stupid reason when I do that, I can't power-off/reboot-recovery option (it just reboots, doesn't go into recovery mode - which is then out of the question, because no gapps).
So...arrrgh.

[Q] H2000 ROM? or update.zip?

Hi,
I have a H2000 Phone, that is stuck in a boot loop,
How it all started:
I tried to use "LCD density changer"
and I set it to change density on boot (massive mistake)
when it rebooted it shows that android animation over and over again, it locks up then vibrates then starts the animation again... CRAP!!!
so my thoughts are well like the few android phones and tablet that I have had previously I will just re-write the ROM to it somehow
well..... seems as it that is like getting blood from a stone... nobody has it???.. how can this be???
nobody at all has ever written a customs ROM for this phone??, surely not?..
I have looked high and low for a ROM for this phone, spending hours using "google Translate" to read though Chinese forums, even randomly signing up to the forums to find that I can't fins any info at all.
I do not have the IMEI problem that most people are talking about (yet)
because I cant even get that far,
i have downloaded the system.img, recovery.img etc etc. for the device, but unless I can get them onto the phone they are useless to me,
I have tried the SPmultiportflashdownloadproject.exe and installed the Mediatek MT6516 drivers and the device is recognised by windows (for about 5 second after being plugged in then the phone shows the charging indicator on the screen and the device is no longer accessable by windows)
as far as I know I have the right bits to flash the firmware or ROM to the device, but i'll be buggered to know how to do it,
I have looked all though the forums and seems as nobody so far has a solution
i can get into revocery <3e> mode by holding "+" and "Power" this gives me a green android and a explanation mark inside a triangle
if I press the "home" soft key I get
Android system recovery <3e>
Android system recovery utility
then the options of;
Reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/facory reset
wipe cache partition
So I would assume I would be after an update.zip package to progress using this method.
I can also get a "factory menu" by pressing the "Camera button" and "power button" this gives me:
"Factory Mode"
with the option of:
Full Test
Item Test
Test report
clear flash
version
reboot
I can go through the menu items using the volume "-" and "+" keys but cannot select any of the options, I have tried a few different combinations of buttons but nothing helps..
I do however have access to a working H2000, if this helps at all, I doubt it..
I ripped the build.prop off the working H2000 and will post that in a sec
would be nice if somebody could write an update.zip with the build.prop info and sign it for me???...
Please help me...
Ok I used
SP flash tool v1.1052.3
I flashed the rom I had to the device,
but i had to untick preloader for the prog to recognise my device
and it told me to insert the cable in 5,4,3,2,1
BAM it worked..
It turns on and works!!!
...but the colour is like it is inverted..??
but I do have access to the device now
should be able to access via adb connect "ip" when I get home to my wireless connection and maybe mount /system as rw and push the build.prop file
it could be that I have the wrong firmware for this hardware? as I know some were resistive (H3000 is resistive in a different casing and some are Capacitive, H2000)
I think i need to find the recomended software "SP flash tool v1.1051.5"
if anyone knows where i can find it then i will try again
Cheers,
Keg
Ok now to make things worse
The dual sim IMIE's have disappeared... (DANG!!)
I have now hit my brick wall, it looks like to do anything usefull from here on I will need the special programming cable... without it I cannot do much usefull...
if anyone knows of somebody in Canberra Australia with a cable that would save me some greif...??? Lol..
on another side note, I DID work out how to successfully change the LCD density on this phone,
I STRESS HERE I CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE WITH ANY MISLEADING OR WRONG INFORMATION THAT IS PROVIDED BELOW, I AM RE_WRITING THIS FROM MY PROVEN TO BE HORRIBLE (just ask my missus) MEMORY,
I am providing it as a rough guide, and it may not work or could brick your phone like i did to mine!!!
Ok, here we go...
it involved installing Z4Root, running the permanent root option, then using ADB from the Android SDK, I typed
"adb devices" to check that only one device was connected,
then;
"adb shell"
this gave me "$" then I typed;
"su"
and accepted the superuser request on screen
then it gave me "#"
from here I typed
"Mount" to advise of the current mountings it told me /system was from /dev/block/mtdblock8
then to access and modify the build.prop file I had to make /system Read /Write by typing in;
"mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock8 /system"
then i typed
"chmod 777 /system"
"exit"
"exit"
From here I could then use the file explorer that comes with phone to open up /system and navigate to build.prop
then by selecting it i could scroll down the screen to almost the end where is says
LCD DENSITY=160 Or something like that
and I changed it to 140 the first time and then saved.
I reset the phone and once it booted the LCD was set to 140!!!
I tried again by doing all the above again (to get rw in system again) and set to 100 rebooted and it was set to 100 (everything is smaller and doesn't croud the screen anymore) obviously this ROM wasn't ment to be set at anything else or b easily modifiable due to the face that nothing re-sizes properly and it looks kinda crappy... (Do'H, though on a plus side the browser should be able to scale a page better now though)
So after all that I DO NOT recommend doing this procedure unless you have the programming cable and the Factory ROM just incase you bugger it up like I did....

Help! H2000 Incoming calls rejected after "clean data"
My phone is a H2000 iPhone 4 Clone with Android 2.2 Froyo. Here is the problem: I have went to Settings and then Manage Applications. I scrolled down to the Settings application and clicked it.
I selected the buttons Clear Data and Clear Cache. I was then sent to the android homescreen. Since then, whenever someone tries to call my phone, My phone will vibrate for a second, not show anything on my screen, then display on the other callers phone "User Busy". However I can still call to other people, that works atleast.
Do any of you know a solution? The phone is definetly getting the call because it vibrates when it gets the call, it just doesnt show anything on the phones screen, thus I cannot accept the call and then the other caller gets "User Busy" on their phone. Any advice? Please? Im really stumped here . Thank you in advanced!
Edit: The phone was working FINE before I did this to the Settings application.
Thanks a lot
