[Q] Nexus S, Droid 2 Gl., or DX? - General Topics

Hi everyone, new to the forum (just joined),
I'm looking to get my first smart phone currently have verizon but my contract is up and I'm looking at getting either the D2.GL, DX, or Nexus S. I have reservations about getting a droid because of motoblur/ninjablur, I'd prefer a phone with stock android which is why the nexus s looks so appealing (gingerbread, mmmmm). I've obviously never rooted/bootstrapped a phone and I will if I need to but I'm not sure on which of the 3 to get.
Thoughts?
And thanks in advance.

Droid X.
I have to run, but Moto typically has the best Media/DRM support of the Android manufacturers. The phone feels solid in the hand, and I'm not a fan of Moto's QWERTY sliders. Screen is huge, as well, has HDMI out IIRC and the camera is decent. The internals are nice. Runs FroYo.
If you need (or want) a keyboard, then go with the Droid 2, though.
I wouldn't get the Nexus S over either of those devices, personally, unless you really want a FFC.
Sorry, usually I'd write a page, but I'm running behind schedule!

thanks for the info!

Hey man, I own a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and I can tell you that the Nexus S is very similar to that. And let me tell you, this baby can really fly. I prefer the processing power in the Samsung Galaxy S and Nexus S than the Droid X. I have also played with the Droid X (many of my friends have it) and it sometimes lags up (this can probably be fixed from a rom). HOWEVER the Droid X also has some major advantages, such as the huge screen (it's screen is so good for on-screen typing) and Verizon's network. If you go with the Nexus S you're stuck with T-Mobile or AT&T (on Edge). Also it appears to be that the Nexus S doesn't even run on the new 4G speeds that T-Mobile has. So it basically comes down to this (sorry not even including the Droid 2 because that phone is crap! ) : Do you want a phone that is smoother, less laggy, more updates (Google phones always get updates first, has a very nice Super Amoled OR do you want a (Droid X) - phone that has amazing Media interfaces, HDMI, a huge screen which is awesome for typing and movies, and a better coverage?

Go for a vibrant. Does both att and Tmobile 3g you can mod it for a ffc has a beautiful screen and 16gigs internal plus a sd card(nexus s is lacking one) & it also runs froyo

Doesn't the Nexus S not do AT&T 3g? It says it supports even 850mhz on the website...
Nexus S is the best phone mentioned in this entire topic. Droid X is weak compared to Vibrant... Sure the Nexus S outdoes the Vibrant.

Vibrant has that band too. Plus no 720p recording and sd card slot is a deal breaker

I personally wouldn't call either of those deal breakers. I don't remember the last time I recorded a video and 16gb is plenty of space for me. It's an internal SD card so it still acts like one when plugged into PC. Just copy old SD's contents over. Not that I wouldn't have preferred for it to be external...

thanks for all the input everyone and I have a quick question about the nexus s's internal memory. Do we know how it breaks down? like how much of the 16g are for app storage and media storage? sorry, i'm a noob.

(Q) evo 3d vs Nexus s 4g

Could use some opinions, I was about to buy the evo shift with my upgrade ( I have sprint by the way) and I saw that they are releasing both the evo 3d and the Nexus s 4g, I want to know if I should get the shift now or wait for one of the new ones. I also do not have 4g where I currently live that kinda factors in aswell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I'm in the same situation. I think if you can wait, the Evo 3D is the best spec-wise, with a gig of RAM and a 1.2 ghz dual-core processor. As for the Nexus S, it's pure google, BUT only 16 gigs onboard storage is kind of annoying. I'd say, overall though, unless you REALLY need a keyboard, waiting is probably best.
Oh and even if you don't have 4g, didn't Sprint add a new 10$ add-on to every phone now, 4g or not? So it shouldn't matter too much to your decision.
As for me, I think I'll wait for the Evo 3D, it's just such a nice piece of hardware.
P.S. this is my first post on XDA, so sorry in advance for any stupid errors I make
Ya sprint has the add on but I do not get 4g where I live, I also prefer no keyboard so I will probably end up waiting aswell.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
it basically comes down to your preference for the evo's stellar hardware, or a slight edge in development benefits for the nexus s 4g.
personally, i didn't really use most of the ground-breaking hardware features on the original evo (kickstand, hdmi, 8mp cam/front cam). and i've gone through so many baked roms on so many different phones, that i'm kind of yearning for a simplified stock google experience again.
but then again, everybody's complaining about how outdated (i was disappointed that there was no significant hardware difference between nexus s and galaxy s) the hardware is. so i guess it depends on what youre looking for.

[Q] Infuse 4G or Nexus S for AT&T?

I posted this same thread on the Nexus S forum, hoping to get the other side of the story here.
Hi, I'm leaving for college the 17th, and want to get my upgrade before I leave. Originally, I was gunning for the Atrix, but the Pentile Display, Motoblur, and poor software/hardware integration were deal breakers. So, I've narrowed it down to the Samsung Infuse 4G, and the Samsung Nexus S, and might exchange them within the 30 day period if the Samsung Galaxy S II comes out.
I'm just going to list the pros and cons for each, as I see them, and if any of you can provide feedback (especially those on AT&T) that would be great.
Nexus S
+Pure Google/Stock Android
+Will get Ice Cream Sandwich
+SAMOLED
+Community backing
+4" Screen
-1GHZ Cortex A8
-No Guerrilla Glass (don't know if that's a deal breaker)
-Supposed radio problems on AT&T
Infuse 4G
++SAMOLED+
+Battery Life
+Infused ROM provides stock Gingerbread
+1.2GHZ Cortex A8
+Thin/light (helps offset screen size)
+ Guerrilla Glass
>4G, then again this is AT&T
-4.5" Screen
-Might not get Ice Cream Sandwich
I'll use the phone for web browsing, email, messaging, calling, a video or 2 on the go maybe, occasional doc editing/tweaking, apps for weather, news, etc. Not big on the 3D gaming really.
Thanks!
Infuse all the way, the nexus doesn't even have 720 p video recording and there is something else about the phone memory, either internal or external SD card only, can't remember which
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA
it has a 16 Gb internal memory. nothing else.
stock android doesn't support 2 SD cards, 720p video, pictures above 5mp, and the screen isn't as good nor does it have hspa+ and mhl. the nexus has great development and is fast as hell but you may as well have a nexus 1. the thing is a nexus s can play 1080p video but there is no way to get that to a TV other than dlna over wifi and in that case the TV or device hooked to it may have a video player and only be reading the file in the first place. other than the apparent snappiness of the nexus there isn't much purpose to it.
a nexus1 can feel just as snappy with cm7. and doesn't give up much, it is also easier to root, has a cool track ball, multi color led notifications and is very pocketable, it only lacks the 3d gaming power of the nexus s and the infuse.
the infuse though not as snappy with 2.2.1 has 720p video, is easily rooted, has HDMI, can play 1080p out to the TV (many micro HDMI devices only output 720p) the screen is awesome, the mms app is more feature rich (stock android really needs a 3rd party mms app). it has 13gigs SD that is expandable with an additional 32, 8mp pictures (no real point to this since the lense isn't great) 720p recording, and is one of the thinest phones out there.
I'm sure if you ask on the nexus forum they will give you every reason the infuse advantages are not as important as speed and open development. you decide.

there are nexus phones for Canada that work on att (the major Canadian providers mostly use identical frequencies, bell and tellus and roger roms and modems worked great on the captivate) plus there should be an actual att varient. be carefully though some of the Canadian providers got the i9023 not the i9020. the i9020 varients(there is a letter suffix that designates what provider it works on) are the ones with the sampled screen. the i9023 varients have a super LCD, read the nexus forums different models and OS versions have different root proceedures and they all need adb, i don't remember seeing shell or batch scripts to make rooting easier.
Take the Nexus S and run. Far away.

The nexus s was released on att july 24th. To be honest, I don't care about the cameras or sd cards or even hdmi. Mainly screen, software, build, performance, and how it performs as a phone.
sounds like an easy decision then, the att model appears to be an i9020t not an i9023 that should mean that it will have a samoled screen and not a superlcd like some of the Canadian And foreign models have.
i think if i wanted just a phone I'd get a nexus 1 off ebay instead, the trackball is a nice feature and so is the multi color led notifications. just saying.
if the 4.5" screen is a con for you, just get the nexus s
Both have pros and cons, just keep in mind, if you plan on swapping during the 30 day return time line you'll be charged a restocking fee. Not sure about bestbuy and suck but att does impose a restocking fee. I'm sure its not much but its still something to consider.

I'm coming from a blackberry, but since my school uses gapps I liked the integration android provides, as well as touch screen for browsing. I'm Worried about using the phone with one hand with a screen that size. It's a small thing, not a deal breaker.
The 4.5" is absolutely a con. 4.3" is perfect, but I'd take the 4" over the 4.5".
Assuming the same resolution of course. Bigger screens without bigger resolutions are just blurrier and more pixelated.

Guessing by your "con" you quoted my post "no they don't, apple does" I thought you were talking about pros and cons, but I'm assuming your talking about restocking fees, if so att will charge a restocking fee in you choose to exchange or return. Unless the sales rep lied to me.

Please, help me choose a phone.

Hello all,
I will keep this short. I'm looking for a new phone. Please, make recommendations based on the requirements.
Current phone: iPhone4 32GB Black (Which I will also be looking to sell or trade.)
New phone requirements:
Android 2.3 or newer
AT&T or unlockable with 850/1900MHz 3G support
Expandable external memory up to 64GB (would accept memory 32 external with 16 internal if 64 isn't possible, but I don't really want to go down that road.)
Good development/customization support (Nothing with a locked bootloader or something similar)
Good screen resolution or dpi
Good performance and battery life
Thanks!
if you're ok with the android line, i would suggest the Samsung Galaxy S2 (voted best phone of the year on XDA). If you're lucky, you can get your hands on a 32GB version and throw a 32GB microSD at it.
the phone has everything (huge storage, thin as hell, hdmi out, usb host mode, beautiful screen, snappy processor) and it will definitely get the latest android soon.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Highly Recommended , HTC Sensation XL , Motorola RAZR XT910 SUPER SLIM
Samsung galaxy S2, I just got mine about 3 days ago and I am LOVING it.
Rooted, flashed, ready to go
I'm afraid to go with Motorola again since they screwed everyone around with a locked bootloader on the Atrix. I've never been a fan of HTC's UI, but if they are good phones I will keep them in consideration. Galaxy S II looks like a solid phone. What's the diff between the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Nexus? Thanks!
Yea I'd vouch for Samsung Galaxy S2 (International version) for it's sleekness unless you like one of the variants available here in the states. I have like 2 batteries from Anker and 1 from the original packaging. Back to back batteries quite handy on trips.
I used to be own the iPhone 4 and still work with them now and then for friends and families. You'll be totally spoiled by the usage of Adobe Flash and screen size. I held an iPhone 4S recently and I actually can't STAND the small screen >.> SGS2 screen isn't overwhelmingly big and it's great to watch HD videos.
Hmmm I could go on and on. Oh one more thing, you'll love the wide selection of roms and customization that comes along with the Android family. I'm personally just waiting for Samsung to give us Android Ice Cream as they had mentioned fairly recently early November I believe.
That's it unless you have questions

galaxy nexus !
One important difference between the sgs2 and the g nexus is that the sgs2 has the same resolution as the first generation of 1ghz phones life the nexus one and funny enough the galaxy s. It is 480x800 iirc. the newer phones have more! It looks bad seeing the same resolution in bigger screen.

Galaxy S2 is best one so far. if you want to wait a little, android phones with ICS will be coming out soon, but the Galaxy S2 is up-gradable to the ICS as well. so your choice.
Good Luck!
Samsung galaxy S II, of course
Thanks for all of the replies! I read the comparison article, and I was almost sold on the Nexus until I got to #8. No expandable memory? Wtf? That's one of the main reasons I am getting rid of my iCrap4. I have the 32G and it's completely full. I can't even fit my entire library on it anymore. Looks like I can get up to 64G on the S2 though.
i think 16G is enough, most files can keep in PC
Seen what you are looking for, I concur: Samsung Galaxy S II is what you "want"...
...and yes 16GB is plenty.

I think Galaxy S2 won, but how do you use 32GB? I mean, how many musics, movies and photos do you keep on your phone? If lots of photos and videos, why you can't keep the older photos you took in the PC? Or the videos, do you really watch them at least once a week? Or musics, you really listen to all of them, or you jump to the next half of them? Apps, I know, iApps are so big.
Musics, I have 100 music on my 4 Gb SD Card, some videos, some backups and one ext2 lost partitions, with 2.1 Gb left. My device is low end, so low memory and small screen. I will buy the rumored Xperia Nozomi. I made one big mistake buying this Xperia X10 Mini Pro.

Advice from my fellow Infusers

Ok well the migration time is coming, not an upgrade just a move on... I'm thinking between the HTC One-X and the Samsung Galaxy Note... I'm kind of stuck between the two because I do want a bigger phone than my infuse (I have bad eyes and have glaucoma so a bigger screen is a definite plus). Even though it is a plus its not all I'm looking for. I am looking for screen, specs, build (solidity of the device), company reputation the whole shabang I'm leaning towards the HTC one-x but then again the note is quite tempting so any advice will help, and thanks again XDA for everything.

I moved to Verizon and got a Galaxy Nexus a couple months ago and while it was by NO means a downgrade, I did notice the slightly smaller screen size compared to my Infuse. However, IMO the Note is a really big phone, if you use your phone one-handed a lot you might enjoy a smaller phone like the One X, the specs for the international version are amazing. Others who moved to the Note might have a completely different outlook, that's just my 2 cents...
I have a tablet also so I want a phone that is a reasonable size; when I want a bigger screen I move to my tablet lol.

Yea I understand where you're coming from lol the note is huge, I played with one in best buy and put my infuse up to it and just walked away without saying a word lol. Its a giant phone, a little too big for me because with my infuse I can type comfortably with one hand and with both if in a more leisure like environment, but I tried the note and it was far too much a stretch for me, I have never gotten my hand on a galaxy note though, all I know is what I've heard about it with battery life and what not, that steered me away from it and Verizon. Agreed the Note is great if you don't mind holding it with both hands lol
The GNex definitely does not have the best battery life stock, I ranged 10-12 hours on a charge, but I got if for the Nexus experience/development and LTE so I can't complain. I got the flush fitting extended batt and flashed the CM9 nightlies and I can easily get >= a day on a charge.

Unfortunately, it seems that an SD card slot has fallen to the bottom of the to-do list for a lot of the newer phones, the Gnex doesn't have one either. Even a year later it's hard to justify getting a new phone

http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/LG-Nexus-4,Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-Skyrocket/phones/7531,6515
Do you have any plans on getting a new phone? What might you get?
Even though I ask two questions I still feel like the post is more of a statement
Still happy with my SR and really haven't seen anything better come along, yet.
Nexus 4 just seems to fall short. Yes it has better screen res (I have no complaints with SR display) but to me having LTE and external sd card outweigh the benefits of 2GB ram and quad core in the Nexus 4.
Now if a Nexus 4 32GB w/ LTE comes along I might pounce...
Oh, and we'll have a CM10 4.2 build in about a week.
Well AT&T upgraded me to the GS 3, because my SR kept having some issues. (Randomly rebooting itself during a call.)
So it sits on my desk waiting to get sent back to Samsung, but now the S III on the other hand I am liking quite a bit, and unless some one comes out with something that would at least Double what I currently have, then I am perfectly happy with my S III. Albeit I was quite happy with the SR as well, just the minor frustration of it rebooting itself every now and then. It was stock, just rooted and de bloated.
Note 2. cant wait
S3 is fantastic. I miss my SR though. The Nexus 4 looks decent, but then I remembered it's an LG phone
Stock ICS on my S3
My bro and I thinking of selling SR and S3 for LG4s, my other bro thinking of selling his iPhone5 for an LG4 lol LG4 = Nexus 4 :silly:
But if no one wants to buy my phone then I guess I'll keep it till Nexus 5 or whatever google phone is next
My skyrocket mic has never quite worked right, and I get 4 hours battery life tops if I'm actually using it, like playing music browing flipboard.
I'm a few days before my 1 year warranty with samsung is up, and I guess I could try to send it in for a new one, but I'm not sure they would even give me a new one. I could get an insurance replacement from AT&T but for that $200 I'd rather put it towards the Nexus 4.
I don't use 8gb let alone 16 on my skyrocket, even though I have an extra 16GB sd card installed, I haven't used it since I moved all of my music to google music, mostly listen to pandora anyways. Everything is streaming these days. The lack LTE is kind of lame, but I don't live in an LTE area anyways, and where I do get LTE its never faster than 20MB/s (with HSPA+ capping a 21MB/s supposed max, who cares?) and I'm almost never not in range of WiFi. The upgraded screen resolution is the thing I'm most looking forward to. I can't say I've missed not having a quad or 2gb of ram and felt like I'm missing out in those aspects.

You must not have played with a HD display phone cuz I would upgrade in a instant for one with HD. 480 is just not enough!

nexus 4 is a great phone, but we're approaching the point where having a super fast processor just isn't the most important thing. on CM10 my SR responds as soon as i click anything, i have no complaints. the nexus 4, however, does not have LTE or sd card, both things i consider to be extremely important.
the only real disadvantage of skyrocket is the low res screen...and im really waiting for the 5inch 1080p panels before i make the jump.
I will forever love the skyrocket!
My next phone will have intels 48 core processor
I love my rocket.

I wouldn't touch the Nexus 4 for two reasons: no SD card slot, and no LTE. Without those two things, I'd never be able to consider it a daily driver.
I've got a Note 2 on the way, but I'm hanging on to my Skyrocket as well. It's too good a phone to part ways with after less than a year, and it can fill the daily driver role, with the Note 2 being more of a tablet at home, phablet on the road.
Nexus 4. Top end phone for half the price and no contract, can't say no. Rather take hspa battery life over marginally better 1 bar LTE. Obviously some of us are in great coverage but even then with current data caps I don't need 40mbps to load tapa and reddit. Would love an SD card but for 350 for a phone that in any other case would go for 600....
Take it or leave it but to complain or say it isn't enough? If you'd rather pay 600+ for ATTs optimus, suit yourself.

Since I'm still on contract w/ AT&T, I might as well enjoy LTE speeds, since that's the premium I'm paying for. Maybe when my contract runs out and I jump to either T-Mo or Straight Talk, then I'll look at the Nexus. LTE is fast up here in SF (> 20Mbps down), but when I was in LA, it wasn't faster than T-Mo's HSPA+ (averaged between 6-10Mbps down vs. T-Mo's 10-15Mbps when tested side by side at the T-Mo store). My only worry is that HSPA+ doesn't seem very reliable.. at least for AT&T. Example: 2 bars on HSPA+ on AT&T = no reception on my phone. 2 bars on LTE = very fast.
Lack of SD card hurts big time, but maybe I won't have such an itch to flash roms and keep backup roms and apps if I'm running vanilla Android?
So far, very happy w/ the the SR. I know newer phones come w/ faster and more efficient processors, but w/ SkyICS, I've had no problems w/ performance and battery life. My eyes are also not good enough to truly appreciate an HD display. I feel no sense of screen envy when I go back to my phone after looking at my friends' iPhones or Nexus.
I'm really considering the nexus 4 even tho it is lg. Idc about no lte because I don't even have lte in my area.

Hey let us know how the note 2 is. I am thinking of jumping to note 2 but am not sure.
LG4 is out as I need external sd card option.
