(Q) evo 3d vs Nexus s 4g - General Questions and Answers

Could use some opinions, I was about to buy the evo shift with my upgrade ( I have sprint by the way) and I saw that they are releasing both the evo 3d and the Nexus s 4g, I want to know if I should get the shift now or wait for one of the new ones. I also do not have 4g where I currently live that kinda factors in aswell. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I'm in the same situation. I think if you can wait, the Evo 3D is the best spec-wise, with a gig of RAM and a 1.2 ghz dual-core processor. As for the Nexus S, it's pure google, BUT only 16 gigs onboard storage is kind of annoying. I'd say, overall though, unless you REALLY need a keyboard, waiting is probably best.
Oh and even if you don't have 4g, didn't Sprint add a new 10$ add-on to every phone now, 4g or not? So it shouldn't matter too much to your decision.
As for me, I think I'll wait for the Evo 3D, it's just such a nice piece of hardware.
P.S. this is my first post on XDA, so sorry in advance for any stupid errors I make

Ya sprint has the add on but I do not get 4g where I live, I also prefer no keyboard so I will probably end up waiting aswell.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

it basically comes down to your preference for the evo's stellar hardware, or a slight edge in development benefits for the nexus s 4g.
personally, i didn't really use most of the ground-breaking hardware features on the original evo (kickstand, hdmi, 8mp cam/front cam). and i've gone through so many baked roms on so many different phones, that i'm kind of yearning for a simplified stock google experience again.
but then again, everybody's complaining about how outdated (i was disappointed that there was no significant hardware difference between nexus s and galaxy s) the hardware is. so i guess it depends on what youre looking for.

Only 16gb? That's pretty damn decent internal storage for a phone when you can add external.

There's no external storage on the Nexus S

You're right. For openness, the Nexus One is still hands down the best. You can install ANYTHING onto it. For everyday use however, this one beats out my Vibrant I think (esp. with its GPS issue).

Oh yeah, I like it a lot more than my G2. Not sure how to explain it, but the G2 seems "boring". Not much really going on with it. Besides stock android it's really just like any other android phone out there, and the hinge just feels poorly made. The myTouch 4G has everything: sleek thin design, superb build quality, customizable LED notification light, 3mp ffc for video chat, very good hardware, the great HTC Sense "feel", hardware buttons feel better than capacitive buttons, hot swappable SD card etc. I really don't have anything to complain about.
This phone makes the G2 just feel old, its weird. I didn't realize how great HTC Sense was until I used crapwiz and stock android for so long. The built in widgets are just great.

I feel the same way. I have the Vibrant and love the file system, as well as the 16 GB internal memory, plus the option of a micro sd card for expandabilty. Nothing touches this 16GB internal memory, along with the external option. I have a 16 GB micro sd in it, and it's nice to have the internal memory for swap space, such as backing up, or transferring files to another person's sd card.
i can see that about the G2. Plus if you arent a keyboard fan the mytouch is the way to go.
I for one dont want to keep flipping out the keyboard everytime i need to type something so i would prob end up using the screen

its really unfortunate because they have such a great template to work on (their gpu/proc are top notch) but then fumble it with their inability to provide service
they burned alot of people with that Moment (right?) and then now with the Galaxy line (even the epic is buggy) IMO the only way they correct the issue is by releasing a stock Android device and work with Google on the software

Ditto on the Nexus - especially the open tethering/hot spot since the updates (running a mostly stock ROM). Going to see how far I can get with the MT4G with temporary root before I decide to keep it and eBay the Nexus.
The myTouch 4G has free tethering/mobile hotspot for the meantime until T-Mobile gets their new plans up. It works pretty nicely too.

The PowerVR SGX540 GPUs in the Galaxy S devices destroy everything that's out, including Adreno 205 found in the myTouch 4G and G2.
Performance is excellent though. Applications open up instantly. Right out of the box the myTouch 4G is way faster than the Vibrant.

Screen keyboard is good. I really love the stock android keyboard which this phone doesn't have. But i'm slowly getting used to the HTC Touch Type...the screen has enough room to type without feeling cramped. Camera is pretty nice with tap-to-focus and there's no lag for me personally after the OTA update, like some people are reporting.
This one definately beats out my Vibrant which is now up for sale. Smooooth as heck and the screen is not overly bright like the Vibrant's, but it can be if you want it to. My sister just saw it and I demoed it for her and all she kept saying was "Ohhdeee.."

Stock launcher, I always use the stock launcher on my phones. The on screen keyboard is actually the best I've used, and the haptic feedback is really good aswell; it felt weird on my Vibrant and G2. The phone doesn't lag at all anymore. When I first got it the browser would lag a little bit but the OTA update definitely cleaned everything up.

[Q] Nexus S - the right choice for me?

Alright, I know this is -another- one of these threads, but I've been interested in a Nexus for a little bit and now that it's coming to Sprint, I wonder if I should replace my EVO with a Nexus.
Basically, I'm no "POWER USER". As long as I can root, modify, etc, I'm pretty easily entertained. Secondly, I don't care much for a 3D Screen. Cool? Sure, but that's about it.
Really the only thing I want to do with my new phone is: Watch flash videos, have a well-sized display with good quality, flash custom ROMs including Honeycomb ROMs (I heard the Nexus One can do this), play the N64 Emulator without any video lag, and have good battery life.
From what I've heard, the Nexus S can do all of this. Can someone confirm this?

Yup. But there's a lotta of other things you'd be missing. Like dual core proc.
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
If you have an upgrade now then I'd say get the nexus s as it will provide everything you need in a mobile device. Me personally, my upgrade isn't until September so I think ill wait for the evo 3d. Nexus s wont be outdated for a while but my only concern is that if my phone isn't a dual core by the end of 2011 I won't be ready for 2012. I feel by 2012 dual core will be required to run future android builds/apps/games flawlessly and I don't want to be stuck with a single core for 2 years :-/. Look how old the nexus 1 is and the development is very strong. Nexus s will be around for a while I'd say pull the trigger on it.

Hm. It really comes down to hardware vs software then, doesn't it? my upgrade is actually in November 2012 now, thanks to do goddamn changes to Sprint Premier. But my stepfather has an upgrade available now that I might take from him. I.E. he buys me my new phone, activates it on my number, and I give him my EVO or he keeps his blackberry.
Kinda like buying hero a couple of months before the evo came out.

I'd say go for it. If I had an upgrade I'd definitely get it for 199 but I wont pay full price. Nexus s is pure Google experience; no waiting on sprint updates, you will always be updated, and in the loop with tons of dev support. Its still better than the evo overall but I think it'll(evo) take me to September LOL.

I'm still pretty torn. I guess I'll have to see what the price difference is. How will the display qualities match up against each other and the current EVO?

Evo is only TFT and supports 16,000 colors. Nexus S is wvga super amoled and supports 16,000,000 colors LOL. Evo 3D display specs are clear yet but if it doesnt have an amoled screen like the nexus s then its clearly still the winner for best display IMO.

The huge killer for the nexus, imo, is the lack of and sd slot. Something to think about
I guess I can go with the Nexus with my stepdad's upgrade and then buy the EVO 3D on my upgrade once available.
As for the storage issue. I currently have 8.5gb free space on my 16gb SD card and 246 mb free on internal. That's with essentially my entire music collection, some pictures, and excluding 2-3 gb of movies I want to put on the phone. 16gb seems like plenty of storage, even if not expandable.

True but it has 16gb of internal that should me more than enough. I thought I needed a 16 gb SD card and I only use like 6 gb total. I could have stuck with the 8gb that came with it but then again in only speaking for myself.

The way I see it, the Nexus can currently run the previews of honeycomb, and even the Nook Color can do that. I doubt they'd release a new dev phone without anticipating it being ready for the next two major releases of Android for phones, 2.4 and Ice cream (the GB and HC merge for phones), which I will get first on the Nexus.

Ya my mom has a nexus s for tmobile and its battery life is epic. after 14 hrs of decent usage its at 70%. Easily one of the best battery life phones out there due to pure google and the display. However I am sure the 4g will lower its battery a little bit. I also really like the Contour display, fits your face better for talking and makes it easier to scroll through menus.

I switched from a nexus s, and I love it. I think the screen is a lot more vivid and colorful then the nexus s. I'm still going to keep the nexus because it will always get the newer os's first, but I haven't touched it since getting the g2x. I would say after using it for a few days, battery life is pretty much comparable,it's about the same. Once we get cm7 on here I'm sure it will just be a that much better
G2X
I wouldn't switch due to waiting for updates...just look at the g2 and don't tell me about LG is different and blah blah..T-Mobile still has to test and choose when to send it out. So I would stick with the Nexus S..unless you have no problem waiting a extra 6 months when ice creams comes out ..
I'm thinking once cyanogen mod works on it I won't even need to worry about updates. It will probably have more active community development I guess. Hardware wise it sounds like a superior device. The Galaxy S II is taking a while to hit the market and the sensation may have a locked bootloader I heard... I like the idea of HDMI mirroring.. Nexus S can't do that.

BTW my friend has a g2x so ive compared side by side
only 512 ram
no mkv playback this sucks when you have HDMI mirror.
would be perfect to have some nice 1080mkv blu ray movies on phone to mirror to my HD TV
Game are OK but still being stretched out to fit so they get pixelated...
Also only 8gb for main storage
Im waiting for SGS2 international and hopefully i get enough cash
bigger screen samoled PLUS
1.2 ghz dual core Orion
1gb ram
16-32gb storage plus ext SD slot
plays every video and most audio codec under the sun with hardware encoding
HDMI out
I just sold my nexus s on ebay. And I have no regrets. This phone is so much faster and of course I love having a sd card slot. I prefer this form factor over the nexus s. This screen is has better color, more vivid and improved clarity. But the nexus s's blacks are to die for. I also have the thunderbolt and I previously owned the g2, the mytouch 4g, and the samsung vibrant. This is the best phone currently on the market. Hdmi, full 1080p video recording, and dual core processor. The design is simple and elegant. Great phone.
Don't let the 512mb of ram fool you. This baby flies it runs circles around the thunderbolt, which has 768mb ram. Right now, no other phone can rival it's performance. And it's so easy to root, so there should be ample dev support. Yes there may better devices down the line, but that's the nature of technology.
I switched from a nexus s because this device is packed with features I would use that the ns didn't have. To be honest, to me, going from a ns to g2x its more of an upgrade than when I went from a g1 to a vibrant.

I switched from the NS and have not had any second thoughts. Great device, very happy with it.
I switched from a Nexus S. The screen, IMO, is damn near as good as the Nexus S...but not quite as nice. Very close though.
Other than that, it's a huge upgrade. The thing freakin' screams compared to the NS, even an overclocked NS. With CM on it, I'd think there would be no comparison.
My Nexus S is going on Ebay, I'm more than thrilled with the G2X. The screen is sharper, phone is fast (can clearly tell watching beautiful widgets weather animations), and I like the feel and weight of the phone. When CM7 is out, it will be even better.
So I went to the store and played with it. I am going to wait and see what the HTC Sensation looks like on June 8th. Hopefully they will announce launch dates for the Galaxy S II by then also.
The phone was built well.. the screen was pretty nice looking but not as responsive as the Nexus S.
The connection was full bars 4G and it got 1500ish kbps down on my first test and then 3700ish kbps down on a second test. Right next to it my non hspa+ Nexus S pulled down just shy of 5000kbps.
Calls at full volume crackled..
I hope cyanogen and/or LG quickly release Gingerbread offerings for it.

[Q] Going to T-Mobile... G2X or Sensation???

Hi Guys... I have a bit of a predicament here. I will be switching to T-Mobile soon, and I need to figure out what phone to get! Basically it boils down to the Sensation or the G2X. Both of them now officially have Gingerbread, with the G2X being stock Android.
Originally I thought that the Sensation would be the sure choice due to it having 768mb of RAM instead of 512mb and because of the qHD screen.
BUT, as I've been researching more and more, I am seeing a lot of reports on how the Sensation screen isn't that great and can look washed out, and worse yet, I see a LOT of reports that the battery life is AWFUL.
I have tried to find more information on the G2X screen but other than it being LCD and 800x480. But I don't know if this is just me, but of the videos and images I've seen of the G2X, I almost have the impression that the contrast ratio and brightness of its screen is better than the Sensation. Has anybody compared them side by side? What do you think about this?
Two other things that make me lean in the direction of the G2X would be that the Sensation has only 1GB of internal storage and the G2X has 8gb, with both having microSD. And also I believe that the Tegra 2 GPU in the G2X is quite a bit better than the Adreno 220 in the Sensation.
So I am totally stuck now and can't make up my mind I'd love to hear input from you guys, especially if you've used both phones side by side (and if you've used gingerbread on the G2X even better!)

No thanks... I currently have a Galaxy S and am looking to upgrade to a dual core phone. And I've had too many issues with the GPS on my Mesmerize (which I rely on heavily). If we were talking about the Galaxy S II that would be different, but it isn't an option unless I want to spend a lot of money for an unlocked phone.

I was talking about the SGS4G not the II but i havent had an issue with the gps on this and if you compare all three of these phone, most people will tell you to get the 4G. And tmobile is getting the Hercules which is dual core. I believe ig should come out next month

I prefer the g2x. I had the GS4g it is reall slow compared to all the dual core ones coming out.
I do currently have the sensation though, I had a problem with the g2x replacement that was sent to me from t-mobile and decided to just sell it and buy one.
G2x is a lot faster and has stock which is awesome, but Sensation has better build quality/bigger screen.
G2X has way better support for games, the sensation is lagging behind, even though its packed with specs it can't really use it.
Sensation's camera is WAY better than the G2X.

What phone would you trade for? Sensation, or myTouch4g Slide

So with all the problems the G2x is currently having especially with LG, I have come to the conclusion to ditch this phone. LG has terrible support and everybody here knows this. We aren't getting ICS and it's the last straw for me. Yes we will get "cm9" but without an official version we will not be able to fully take advantage of the tegra2 processor in our phones. Some of you don't understand this...
Anyways I have two options:
Sensation:
Great development
Already confirmed ICS
or the Slide:
Not as great development
But has better hardware
*almost sure this is getting ICS as HTC has claimed they are updating their phones.
This might be a war between a hardware keyboard or not but I want it to be further than that. Which has better quality control, and which will be the better phone in the long run?
By far, the Sensation.
qHD is bomb.
Powered by a G2x
I don't like sliders.
I had a HTC Touch Pro and hated it. Onscreen keyboards work so much better for typing.
Sensation would have my Vote IF I had to pick. But I'd pick the G2x over the Sensation. It's faster. As far as qHD, you can do the same thing with the G2x by simply changing the DPI to "190".
Is the amaze just outta the question? I don't have the mytouch but I do own a g2x, sensation, and amaze.. My break down would be.. Camera: amaze hands down, then sensation, then g2x.. Screen: amaze, g2x, sensation (possibly got the crappy screen, kinda yellow and washed out). battery: g2x hands down, sensation, amaze. Performance: really tough to say.. The amaze is completely stock. Sensation and g2x are running cm7.. Dev support: sensation hands down, g2x, amaze (although xboarder is a freaking machine and cranking out roms like a madman, and more devs are starting to move over to it).. Of course this is IMO.. Mileage may vary...
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
Well I left out the amaze because its not one of the options Tmobile gives for an exchange. I know about the DPI mod...
Seems like the sensation is getting the most love. I just wish the g2x would get an official ics update..

Well LG stated today that they are releasing ICS on the O2x and other high end smartphones.... so that's probably a go with the G2x and ICS.
I've heard several bad things about the sensation regarding touch screen responsiveness and a total crappy looking screen... also the WiFi/Landscape issue seemed pretty bad. Just bad build quality.
I also don't understand what you mean by CM9 won't be able to take advantage of our Tegras? Almost EVERY tablet released has a Tegra2 chipset and most are getting ICS (my Asus Transformer confirmed by end of the year).... so I don't know where you are getting this weird info. ICS has support for Dual-Core chips and allows GPU accelerated UI.
If you plan on getting a Sensation and are opened to community support, then why aren't you happy with the G2x and community support? I'm running CM7 now (#180) and GPS locks quick and everything just works well.
The Sensation is a step backwards from the G2x. Slower CPU/GPU.

Well I left out the amaze because its not one of the options Tmobile gives for an exchange. I know about the DPI mod...
Seems like the sensation is getting the most love. I just wish the g2x would get an official ics update..

What did you do to get them to exchange for a different phone?
Get the sensation, sell it locally on Cl for 400 then rebuy. the g2x for 200. That's what I might do.

I just pulled my galaxy S out the drawer for kicks. Updated it with CM7. I may run it a while.

we will be getting ISC, of course. Come on, it is defiantely in the top 5 beastest phones. No ISC is ridiculous.

It is ridiculous because the G2X will NEVER get ISC, but within time I'm sure it will get ICS.
Hercules Hercules!!

Neither, even if we didn't get ics on g2x it still blows most phones out the game. Ya lg and mostly nvidia suck for not supporting the phone as much as they should, but people will always find reasons to ***** and whine about phones.
Even I complain about not having enough internal storage for these 500-600 dollar devices. I friggin hate apps2sd and apps2ext, they always lead to missing apps or corruption. I dont want a partitoned phone so it can have an internal sdcard, thats what those 16-32gb external cards are for. I want an android phone that has 16gb of non partitioned internal storage just for apps and games!

ew neither wtf
get the nexus prime or galaxy or w.e its called if you wanna suck the support ****
or get sgs2 hd, or the s note oh my gwuuaaaad oohohghafgadfldmfn
or wait for the bbx phones
also 4.0 is more or less confirmed for this phone, and even if it wasn't historically speaking all the new upgrades were all applied on all the devices before like even the first official upgrade (which all suck ass)
