Hello all,
I will keep this short. I'm looking for a new phone. Please, make recommendations based on the requirements.
Current phone: iPhone4 32GB Black (Which I will also be looking to sell or trade.)
New phone requirements:
Android 2.3 or newer
AT&T or unlockable with 850/1900MHz 3G support
Expandable external memory up to 64GB (would accept memory 32 external with 16 internal if 64 isn't possible, but I don't really want to go down that road.)
Good development/customization support (Nothing with a locked bootloader or something similar)
Good screen resolution or dpi
Good performance and battery life
Thanks!
if you're ok with the android line, i would suggest the Samsung Galaxy S2 (voted best phone of the year on XDA). If you're lucky, you can get your hands on a 32GB version and throw a 32GB microSD at it.
the phone has everything (huge storage, thin as hell, hdmi out, usb host mode, beautiful screen, snappy processor) and it will definitely get the latest android soon.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Highly Recommended , HTC Sensation XL , Motorola RAZR XT910 SUPER SLIM
Samsung galaxy S2, I just got mine about 3 days ago and I am LOVING it.
Rooted, flashed, ready to go
I'm afraid to go with Motorola again since they screwed everyone around with a locked bootloader on the Atrix. I've never been a fan of HTC's UI, but if they are good phones I will keep them in consideration. Galaxy S II looks like a solid phone. What's the diff between the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Nexus? Thanks!
Yea I'd vouch for Samsung Galaxy S2 (International version) for it's sleekness unless you like one of the variants available here in the states. I have like 2 batteries from Anker and 1 from the original packaging. Back to back batteries quite handy on trips.
I used to be own the iPhone 4 and still work with them now and then for friends and families. You'll be totally spoiled by the usage of Adobe Flash and screen size. I held an iPhone 4S recently and I actually can't STAND the small screen >.> SGS2 screen isn't overwhelmingly big and it's great to watch HD videos.
Hmmm I could go on and on. Oh one more thing, you'll love the wide selection of roms and customization that comes along with the Android family. I'm personally just waiting for Samsung to give us Android Ice Cream as they had mentioned fairly recently early November I believe.
That's it unless you have questions

galaxy nexus !
One important difference between the sgs2 and the g nexus is that the sgs2 has the same resolution as the first generation of 1ghz phones life the nexus one and funny enough the galaxy s. It is 480x800 iirc. the newer phones have more! It looks bad seeing the same resolution in bigger screen.

Galaxy S2 is best one so far. if you want to wait a little, android phones with ICS will be coming out soon, but the Galaxy S2 is up-gradable to the ICS as well. so your choice.
Good Luck!
Samsung galaxy S II, of course
Thanks for all of the replies! I read the comparison article, and I was almost sold on the Nexus until I got to #8. No expandable memory? Wtf? That's one of the main reasons I am getting rid of my iCrap4. I have the 32G and it's completely full. I can't even fit my entire library on it anymore. Looks like I can get up to 64G on the S2 though.
i think 16G is enough, most files can keep in PC
Seen what you are looking for, I concur: Samsung Galaxy S II is what you "want"...
...and yes 16GB is plenty.
You failed math class. 32>16

I think Galaxy S2 won, but how do you use 32GB? I mean, how many musics, movies and photos do you keep on your phone? If lots of photos and videos, why you can't keep the older photos you took in the PC? Or the videos, do you really watch them at least once a week? Or musics, you really listen to all of them, or you jump to the next half of them? Apps, I know, iApps are so big.
Musics, I have 100 music on my 4 Gb SD Card, some videos, some backups and one ext2 lost partitions, with 2.1 Gb left. My device is low end, so low memory and small screen. I will buy the rumored Xperia Nozomi. I made one big mistake buying this Xperia X10 Mini Pro.

I'm currently on the captivate (galaxy s1) and I love it. I've only spent about 30 seconds on the s2 and it feels even better than the first. Definitally gonna be sticking with samsung on phones in the future.
+1 for SGS2, I have one and HTC Sensation and, Samsung Nexus (new one) And i still prefer the SGS2 and i would rather have the SGS2 than the Nexus when i get ICS running properly on it.

i have make a search for a new best phone for me i cant choice wich one is the best
i was thinking about SAMSUNG I9100 GALAXY S II vs SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE vs i phone 4 vs HTC Sensation vs Samsung Galaxy Nexus...which one you will suggest to me for the top use ?
My personal opinion I like the new Motorola Razr (Or Droid Razr in the US). 1GB RAM, Dual core 1.2cpu and seperate gpu. 16Gb internal with SD ext support. 8Mp Camera rather than 5.
The new Nexus is comparable but has 5mp camera and no external sd card support, which I just don't understand.
If you like the Galaxy, version 3 should be out 1st 1/4 of next year. That looks a beast.
you have to decide wither to go with Android or iOS.
if you want more apps, much much less customization go with iOS and buy iPhone 4/4s
------
if you want good amount of apps, customizable OS go with Android
then ask your self do I want a phone or a small tablet if you want a phone remove the note from your list
other phones in the market share the same specs: 1.2 dual core around 1GB ram
5-8 mb camera
I will go with HTC rezound (in US) or the Galaxy nexus or If you like the design of
Motorola Razr its good phone (my friend told me its camera is not that good)
my final personal choice will be the new Galaxy Nexus
You can't go wrong with Galaxy S II. It packs all the things we love in Android - big screen (but not too big), open bootloader, great power etc.
I just love the idea of "Pure Google" phones. I have a Nexus S that I love. I'd go for that if I were you, or even better, if you have the budget to afford it, for a Galaxy Nexus.
Pure Google phones = best support (quick system update deployment), no bloatware (I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, Sense and others).
Of course it is a bit irrelevant once you install CM on them, but there's something that makes me feel good to have the brand Google on the back of my phone.

and remember, tinkering with Apple stuff is a futile effort! unless you work for them. which i suppose is like a gang initiation in / out. basically apple-ites live on their own little planet.
I heard that the sound quality on the s2 is not as good as the first version.
i was thinking to buy the htc flyer but with the samsung note maybe i change my mind because i saw the specs for that device and i think is better to have 2 things in one devices and more more cheaper
In my opinion the Galaxy Nexus is the best you could get because you can be sure that Google will support this phone a long time and the hardware is really nice.
The second phone I would choose is the S2, brilliant screen and epic phone.
Hi, I had the Captivate, then upgraded to the SGSII. Now my wife has the Cappy. I just put a rom in the I777. Working great. I love the SGSII.
Just my 2 cents.
i decide that i wont buy an iPhone and i will stay with the awesome android OS.
but i want to learn more about the Samsung phones ...like how to root each of them and if i can root them.
what phone have the best screen from the others and the camera.
also about the best custom things like roms and hacks.
battery life and also the best and more important part what are the problems they have .
And if their is a compare video or site with all the samsung phone i am interesting
What about SG note? Weird that nobody recommends it

The HTC Sensation is very nice. I love mine. Even after buying the HTC Amaze I STILL use my Sensation. It feels very nice in the hand...and you can buy white battery covers which when combined with a new ROM, make you feel like you have a new phone.

its buttery smooth, fastest growing apps market, etc. the phone is also really nice, fast, good size, good weight, nice screen, not too bad of a camera (cant beat a real camera ofc, but still).
just my opinion.

Hello all, I am heavily think about paying my ETF from AT&T and moving to Sprint. I can get 4 smart phones for the same price plan as I have at AT&T with just 2 smart phones and 2 regular phones.
On that note, I am looking at either the Nexus S or the SGII.. What are you opinions? I am leaning more towards Nexus S since it is a TRUE Google phone, no bloatware from Samsung or Touchwiz. But the downfall I feel is no SD card.
Please let a future Sprint customer know your opinion.
Thanks
It really depends on what you want to use your phone for.
An external SD card could be useful if you want a lot of media, and the dual core CPU and 1GB of RAM on the S2 will certainly help with gaming and flash heavy websites. However, as you state, the Touchwiz UI is certainly a bit crappy, and having used my friend's Samsung handsets I much prefer my Nexus S.
While the Nexus S doesn't have an SD card, it certainly has a good sized amount of storage (iPhone users all seem to manage fine with 16GB) and it is much zippier without bloat ware or extras. You're also going to get better support in terms of updates, and if you're a dev or a modder you're going to have a much easier experience with the Nexus S.
At the end of the day, I'd say go for the Nexus S if you want to mod, learn how Android works or stay at the cutting edge of Android. The 1GHz Hummingbird may not be dual core but it's still a damn fast chip and will get quick updates for a long time to come yet.
If you'd rather play lots of games, take HD video and use the phone for media then go for the S2.
Hope this helps
^^^
What he said best bet is go into a sprint store and play with both handsets and see what u like more. J wanted a gs2 but I heard that phone was having signal issues. I don't know if they got resolved but I couldn't be more happier with my nexus s 4g. I just wish sprint hurry up and fix there network.

So has the Nexus S received its official ICS update? I dont really use my phone much anymore to watch stuff off the internet since I got my Transformer. I play my games and watch movies off it. But I do surf the net, and would be using the Sprint TV option, you know the average user stuff.
I do root all my devices, I love custom roms and the ability to get free wifi tether, etc...
Damn, I wrote a whole page and it didn't post! I have both phones so I will give a quick summary...development and timely updates- Nexus. If battery and over the top performance are most important then ET4G. The LOS (loss of signal) issue was cleared up with an OTA update

Go on samsung S II and you will not regret ! ( Nexus S is limitted now 512RAM, No micro SDcard, only one 1GHz proc....) I have both devices but you can't compare SII with NS ( SII is faster than many tablets, has a magnificent display, and many other benefits ) ! Good luck in your choice !
Get the gs2.
I own a ns4g and my wife has the epic touch gs2. No matter what you read, or hear touch wiz getting slammed...the gs2 smokes my ns4g in every respect. Its a large phone but other than that it blisters my ns4g and has better battery life. Both phones are stock.
What they all said .. SGSII. Once rooted, bloatwares/junkwares are no longer a problem as you would flash custom ROM anyway (I know I would). The SGSII's hardwares just blow the NS out of the water.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
How does the Nexus S manage in gaming? I don't play the latest games, but maybye some Angry Birds, Guns n' Glory or Toki Tori. Mostly i'm texting and using android apps. Can I buy the Nexus S, or should I buy the SGS2?
That's like buying a mustang gt or springing for the cobra. If u can afford it, the bigger IS better
I have an NS4G but would love to have an S2. I like the larger screen (my previous phone was an Evo, and it fit my hand perfectly) and more robust hardware.
Throw an aosp rom into the S2 and you have the best of both worlds.
My only gripe with Samsung is how they didn't include the Wolfson WM8994 and cheaped out by using a Yamaha DAC, otherwise I'd probably be all over one of the variants. If you're someone who wants to use their phone as their primary portable audio player, and care about sound quality a lot, there's a huge selling point for the Nexus S, as well as the original Galaxy S phones.
Otherwise, the SGS2 is better in pretty much every respect. Not a fan of TouchWiz though, but there would likely be a TouchWiz free ROM shortly after ICS is released for it.
If you do not have enough money to afford an SII, then go on Nexus S , still good and you can play games without problems

Help, my phones up for renewal now and for once I'm not running out to upgrade. I'm on SGS2 at the moment from a HTC Sensation XE from a Nexus 1 and I just can't make my mind up.
The HTC One X doesn't appeal because I use my phone a lot and do a lot of traveling on business which means I generally have to buy a Mugen battery. I also have an expensive 32gb SD that I'm not ready to throw in a drawer just yet.
The Nexus I I had was the most fun for flashing ROM's and that is essential, but the Galaxy Nexus feels like a bit of a step down from this phone and the previous and I want a big screen as I use it for office and email a lot.
A real head wrecker.

Between the Nexus and the S3, the S3 is a better device (best processor, screen, overall experience). You might end up waiting a bit longer for official Jellybean or other future updates but that's a compromise I'd be willing to make. If you really want the precision note taking ability the Note is probably the best choice.
Yeah, that's pretty much my thinking too. My heart says go with the Nexus but my head says go with the S3. The Nexus would probably annoy me because I'd root it within minutes and put Jellybean on then get fed up at no Flash support, and the Galaxy will frustrate me by not having stable CM9 due to all the new hardware....and the Note is just a fat S2. Grrr, why don't Google time their Nexus releases with my phone contracts.

get a S3, it may look horrible but its worth the while,

Buy an off contract Nexus test it out and if you like it when the new Nexus phones are released use your contract renewal to get that .You don't have to use it right away
i think the Note 2 is coming out soon, but I wouldn't recommend it anyways
Hmm, I can see it isn't just me that would struggle with this decision. I think its a toss up between the S3 and the Nexus, but searching the internet has given me a headache as I believe the One X is actually excellent in battery, and Sense 4 is good because I had it on my Sensation. The Note 2 is intriguing too, if its the same spec as the S3, but I could be waiting ages for it to hit the UK vodafone shops (when is it due for release anyway?).

I also what to buy a new phone, and I'm thinking about waiting for the Note 2 because I love that huge screen, but don't want to buy an "old" phone.
Also, the Note 2 should have a slightly bigger screen with an higher resolution.
Shortcomings
When I am in this situation I always ask for the weak points of each phone. A chain is as strong as its weakest link, so that is what one has to look for.
The Galaxy Nexus has no SD card slot, yet only 16 GB of built-in memory. That is an incredibly stupid design decision, in my view. The thing cannot hold a candle to my old Nexus One with 32 GB.
Other phones have a battery you cannot swap. That is even more stupid, as the battery may only live for a year under heavy use, and I always carry a spare, in case the one in my phone runs dry, which it regularly does when I travel or move around a lot on foot and cannot recharge. Hence these phones are just as useless.
Unfortunately some idiot designers come up with ever more ideas to render a phone worthless, so you have to be very wary. Articles with news about phones are useless too, because they concentrate on the strong points of each phone and neglect its flaws. The journalists write worthless stuff and leave out the useful information.
Can anybody think about other value-subtracting features of new phones? GPS flaws seem to be widespread, as are design decisions that turn a mobile phone into a regional phone that fails when you travel.
Which is the company that makes fewer mistakes than the others?
I'd personally recommend the nexus because you always get first updates
Everyday use + modding = Galaxy Nexus
Everyday use + media (storage and screen) + gaming + modding = Galaxy S3
Everyday use + media + modding + gaming + really big screen = Galaxy Note
In terms of power: Galaxy S3 > Galaxy Note > Galaxy Nexus
The Nexus gets updates first, but the international S3 (and Note) will get updates quickly as well. Just don't get the carrier variants.
I think s3 is your choise and the batery of this phone is much better than any other smartphone, and for the other spec.of this phone i have no words.

I'd say S3. I own the i9300 (international) and it's great!
Thanks guys, that really is useful. I think on balance it has to be the S3 then. Didn't realise that the Galaxy Nexus didn't have an SD slot, madness, that rules it out with the One X.
The note would be nice but the old one is just a fat S2, and I have a thin S2 and a TF101, so it's not worth wasting an upgrade on that. I will ask Vodafone when the new note is coming, but failing that, I'm going to have to plump for the S3. Does it have a fixed battery though, because that would be a deal breaker really considering all the travel I do. I often munch through a full Mugen battery let alone the stock ones.

Hi guys hoping you can help.
Ive had my Xperia Play since new, but its screen has gone and feels slow compared to my mates phones now.
Ive been offered the choice of 3 phones.
Nokia Lumia
Samsung Galaxy s3
Xperia U
Im only really interested in making calls, texts, emails, music, browsing and games. All the other special features that come with all new phones are just a gimmick to me, (My X Play was rooted and bloat free within an hour of me getting it) so things like "Siri" on Iphone and S-Voice on Samsung are not a deal winner for me.
One thing I would like is to be able to hook my phone up to my TV via HDMI, something that was GREATLY overlooked on the Xplay, mores the pity.
So, seeing as im no expert, and you guys at XDA seem to be in the know please vote and if you pick "other" leave a comment explaining what phone and why.
Many thanks guys and gals!
Mr Flipfoot
it is also depending on what you want to pay for it
if it doesn´t matter what it cost
i would choose the s3 by samsung cause it has the best performance i think (and many custom roms of course and official update support)
you could connect it to your tv with the following adapter by samsung:
EPL-3FHUBE
(sry i can´t post a link because im a new member )
I would choose Samsung S3 because of the performance. If you're a mean android gamer then it's great for you. But if I really get to choose, I'd love to have Xperia acro S. It has 12MP, 1.5 dual core, HDMI, 11GB internal memory, up to 32 GB SD card and others.. It also looks sleek. You should search for it. I'm not much on the processor speed. I just love Sony's design and features. A fast, beautiful phone that could do everything I want would be great enough. This is just a suggestion. The decision is yours of course.
It all depends on
1 what is your budget
2 carrier (contract specific carrier or prepaid)
With your requirements and considering all carriers supported
Galaxy nexus, S2 or S3.

I agree with this. People always look at a Nexus' specs and go "it looks totally average, why get that when you can get a Galaxy S III or blahblahblah". Hardware specs will only get you so far. What good are they, though, when your software is perpetually bloated and outdated? I'd rather not be at the mercy of Samsung/HTC/whoever for updates.
The Nexus development scene is second to none, too.

(I'm presuming that you're very interested in games, browsing etc.)
I know i'm getting hated for saying this but am i the only one that thinks the S3 is overrated? I'd rather have a Galaxy Nexus than an S3. And there are quite a few alternatives to the S3 like the One X (Many reviewers say it has the best screen out there), the 4X HD (Also IPS LCD like the One X but with bigger removable battery and microSD slot), the Galaxy Nexus (Sure, it isn't a quad core but if you check out on youtube a comparison between the GN and a quad core phone you will see that the Nexus can be as smooth (On JellyBean) or even smoother not to mention you get all the updates first) also the RAZR MAXX (It might not be the best phone spec wise but it has a huge battery which provides excellent battery life).
Sorry for the bad english.

But on the otherhand the S3 is a better multimedia device seeing as you've got alot more storage compared to the 16GB on the nezus

Which of the two are the two are easy to hack > root and custom roms.. and easy to restore from soft unbrick..

If money is important, you can buy the nexus from the play store and ask you carrier to forward the money for the new phone upgrade to the payments for the service. This could save some money and you would still be able to use the Nexus 4.
Spec wise, the N4 wins hands down. If storage really is an issue though, then the Quad Core S4 Pro, 2 GB of ram, and the absolutely gorgeous display won't matter. All you'll get hung up on, is how you don't have more than 16GB of storage. Development wise, its a Nexus...'Nuff said.
Look and feel wise, this is the most beautiful device I have ever held. Its not heavy, but it doesn't have a cheap plastic feeling to it like Sammy phones do either. Its light, fits in the hand well, and is just nice to look at it. There's not really any cons to this phone. The only thing you'll notice coming from Amoled displays is the blacks aren't as deep. You get over it quick though the more you use it and notice the lack of over saturation, and increased clarity. And I'll be sure to let you know what Key Lime Pie is like if you go with the GS3.
Also, being contract free, is a truly liberating experience.

i had a GS3 but sold it for a nexus 4. coming from an iphone 4, the GS3 is an excellent device. I wasn't too crazy about how the GS3 handled receiving MMS, but the screen was the ultimate reason for the switch. Everyone talks about how great the AMOLED display is but I just couldn't handle how it viewed when outside in direct sunlight. I never needed external storage and I live in an area that doesn't have LTE yet, so changing to the NEXUS4 wasn't that big of a downgrade for me. Actually, I love it! I did consider the Optimus G, but the lack of Google Now and Jelly Bean pushed me towards the N4. Couldn't be happier..
I would wait a bit for the next Nexus or Galaxy S to come out before deciding, otherwise I would have to say between Nexus 4 and S3. Depends on the functionality and specs that matter to you most.
Maybe you might consider the Galaxy Note 2. Quad core Exynos, 2GB RAM, non-pentile SAMOLED 5.5" screen, S-pen, LTE if you live in an area with it, monster up-time because of the huge removable 3100 mAh battery (I easily do 24 hours on a single charge with 6 hours screen-on time), and SD card.

The nexus4 sounds very appealing as per above comments.. I can live without sd expansion..
What about hacking side, which is easier and in development.. meaning which it's easier to root, flash custom roms etc etc
Does anyone know when either nexus or samsung next new phone will be released..??
