[Q] Is that an IPAD? - G Tablet General

I swear to all that is holy that I am going to go on a holiday rampage the next time I hear "Oh wow is that an IPAD?". Then you get to explain that its an android pad, then you have to explain what android is 80% of the time, then you wake up covered in blood and the police are there... you get the picture. I think I am going to get a custom paint job on the back of mine and get "Not a dam IPAD" airbrushed on the back, with a unicorn and rainbow of course..
Sorry for the rant.

haha have a feeling that will happen when (if) i get mine for christmas. but everyone that knows me knows i HATE anything APPLE so they most likely will know its not an icrap. but others i dont know may question it.

yea, took mine to the inlaws last night to watch the football game (streaming via flash) and I got the same question, "is that and iPad"?? I was like no, it it were I wouldn't be watching flash encoded video on it.

No need to appologize for the rant. I had a similar experience. I was waiting in the doctor's office with my son and the receptionist (read: older lady) walked up and goes "don't you just LOVE those??" and I knew she was talking about an iPad. I told her it wasn't an iPad and she just gave me this really confused look when I told her it was running Android.

Plug a USB thumdrive in and watch their heads slump over in complete confusion

Even better than that, when I went to get mine from my local staples, I had to get the manager on the floor to go and get it. And she was like "Oh, you don't want that. You're looking for an iPad."
I looked at her bluntly and said "I don't want that piece of crap. I want this." and pointed to the flyer.
Throughout the rest of the transaction, she gave me such a bad attitude. I guess I insulted her Apple fangirlness. LOL

Just about everyone who has seen me at work (Target) with the gTablet has assumed it is an iPad.
This is doubly sad because I used to have an iPad and most of them have seen it plus WE SELL IPADS so there isn't a really good excuse for not being able to tell the difference.
Oh well, I can't really expect most of my co-workers to be familiar with the ins and outs of the tech world. Everyone has something they know more about then the next person.

I have an iPad and G tablet, and there are no comparison. iPAD is much mature platform, and more refined when it comes to the build and screen quality.
Hopefully, someday, we will get there with either Gingerbread/Honeycomb combo.
Besides, shortcomings due to of lack of USB and external storage on iPAD, it is much better platform for non-geeky kind.

If Gtablet was out of box ready, not sure I agree, since without the mod factor, some folks would prefer the gtablet (again IF out of box ready)
1. No iTunes UI needed to move all files (for non modder types)
2. USB host
3. No proprietary connector for data
4. Flash- Some consumers would prefer a tablet that handles Flash.
5. USB host options.
6. Some people like Android and have a phone with it too.
Sad thing is the Gtablet is NOT out of box ready, so iPad wins by default
added: Initial rumors are the next iPad will have USB, but seems anti-Jobs, so seems a stretch of logic based on iTunes UI premise.

I actually like the "This is not an ipad" sticker idea

Hmmm. I wonder if Canon Copier salesmen get irritated when people ask if their product can product Xerox copies like all the other copiers out there? LOL. Eventually, we're just gonna ignore this and know our product is better than an iPad. At least until iPad 2. ;P

I agree. The screen and responsiveness of the G Tablet is no where near as good as the iPad. And the out-of-the-box experience goes to the iPad hands down.
With modding, the G Tablet is still not as slick as the iPad. However, the key here is that the G Tablet can be modded, customized, tweaked, and made to run exactly the way I want it to. If I had an iPad I'd basically better get used to the interface and keyboard because that's what I'm stuck with.
Comparing a G Tablet to an iPad is like comparing a Linux box to a Mac, and there are pluses and minuses to each. It really boils down to what you're comfortable with.
I couldn't care less if people use iPads, G Tablets, Galaxy Tabs or some Windows tablet, as long as I get to use my G Tablet.

That's true, but I am very much against Apple's stand when it comes to Flash, and that's why I have resisted getting iPhone, and got Evo, but I got iPAD as the gift, and loving it.
That being said, I love my gTablet, but it would have been nice if Viewsonic could have done better job in picking up the right screen for it?
Being tablet, screen quality is 60% of the user experience, and 40% is flash. Usability of modding such as copying files between your home network and tablet is gravy in my opinion, but not needed if it can do Browsing and apps successfully.
I am not looking to replace my laptop with tablet, as I will still need laptop to power browsing such as Firefox with 14 tabs open, adblock, session saver and list goes on.
To me, it really sux to see that Google can't put killer browser in their own OS, and gmail integration sux on tablet, as Gmail is nicely integrated in iPAD's client.

At least 10 of my friends have asked the same dumbazz question. In there defense they are not as smart as me . They ask if I like it and I tell them I love it, they ask how much it costs and they seem interested and ask if they should get one over the IPad. I say no. This device as it is right now is perfect for a technically inclined person who loves to play with the device and get it running different roms. Its not ready for an average user. I also know that if they buy one I will be in charge of technical support for the life of the device and I dont want that responsibilty.

Is it really worth it?

Bought the G Tablet from Sears. Used both TNT and Vegan. After so many tweaks got the market and most of the apps to work, BUT there was always an issue with something.. and always something else needed to be tweaked.. After losing sleep over it and spending endless hours, I realized it was not worth the effort for some of the following reasons...
There are some tablets that you don't have to spend all this effort to get the full market.
There are (or will be soon) tablets you can dial out with sim card, or have built in data card if you wish.
Used the Samsung Galaxy (Verizon) for few days and quality was noticeable. you pay $200.00 more BUT everything works... Confirmed with Verizon, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET THE DATA PLAN. (which by the way starts from $20 a month, and it is month to month with no contract, if you chose to get it).
You can get a part time job on the amount of time you spend to get this stupid device to work (at the end it does not.. at least not fully functional) and probably make enough $ to buy a brand new galaxy and more...
So.. I gave up and returned mine... It is really not worth my time... Those you like to play and hope to get this working.. good luck..
Wrong forum... But to me it is worth it. Sorry it isnt for you.
Why do people think the Galaxy Tab is only a little more money?
It's not $200 more. It's $200 more at the start, plus the cost of a data plan. I personally think the Galaxy Tab is ridiculously expensive, over time. If I had to choose between only that or a WiFi iPad, I'd just buy the iPad.
Yes, the Gtab is a PITN because it's so bleeding edge and the software hasn't caught up with the hardware, yet. But that's part of the charm -- the mods are pretty stable so it's usable with just a firmware update. It's not overly complicated.
Again, I don't see the appeal of the Galaxy Tab. When they have a WiFi only version for $400, then maybe I'll take a second look.
Most of us got a G Tab because we are habitual early adopters. And because we wanted a 10" capacitive touchscreen tablet. And because we wanted a Tegra 2 tablet. And mostly because we saw how hackable it was, how easy to root, and how easy to install custom ROMs.
The Galaxy Tab is none of those things (7", Samsung hummingbird, only just got clockwork mod recovery 2 days ago, etc.). But it's obviously a much more polished device out of the box.
We all know the software on this thing was garbage, and we know that the modded ROMs are all lacking a bit of polish still, but the latest stuff like Vegan tab beta3 is totally usable on a day-to-day basis for most of us. But probably wouldn't be smooth enough for everybody's needs.
Obviously, if you find yourself "losing sleep" because of your tablet device, by all means, I suggest returning it!! This is supposed to be fun, not a pain. If it's a pain for you, there are obviously other devices out there that don't require so much screwing around to get working well.
So... to do the math for some that do not read the numerous comments and threads on the cost difference between the gtab and galaxy tab = 2yr contract equaling around $1440 for 3gb a month. or 1080 or about that for 1gb. So ALOT more then the gtab. I have played with the galaxy tab and it is nice. But not worth it and very little chance of upgrading.
Oh I also agree with the above post, ease of modding on this tab is great! Plus the ability to bring it back from a bad flash have made me keep this tablet. This has saved me more times then I can count and that is huge!

I couldn't have said it better mayself. I will echo "If you find yourself losing sleep because of your tablet device, by all means return it." This is a hobby for lots of us here. By its nature, this site (xda) is for developers and early adopters. If you're a regular consumer, then this definitely is not the tablet for you.
I love mine. I love being ahead of the curve. I love being part of the community that is making this device live up to its potential. You couldn't pry this out of my fingers if you tried.
But, to each his/her own. Good luck with whatever tablet suits your needs out of the box.
Get your facts strait. Call Verizon or go to one of their store, you will discover data plan is NOT mandatory.. price is $599 regardless, with or without the data plan...
Re "I love being ahead of the curve.".. wow.. with 1.3 mp camera, you think you are ahead the curve?
Not wanting to feed the troll but my response is...
Yes, it's worth it. I use my 10" tab more than I use my phone now. All the things I was doing (except phone calls and texting) I do on my GTab.
$200 more for a smaller, slower, less capable device just doesn't strike me as a good purchase choice (talking about the Samsung Galaxy Tab) since "I" was looking for a capable 10" WiFi only Android 2.2 tab.
Market access - check
Web browsing - check
Gmail + Calendar - check
Flash - check
And all my apps work on it just fine (I have a few guitar chord apps, TapaTalk forum app, Angry Birds, Paper Toss, Facebook, Audio Galaxy, etc...)
I can't see anything I'm missing in this larger (10"), faster (Tegra 2), less expensive ($399) device. Screen angled viewing is bad...I tend to look directly at my tab so it's not really a problem. Also helps keep prying eyes off what I'm doing
What am I missing?
@turk532 - That's still a lot more bread than the GTab. I got mine for $215 from the Outlet.
$600 for a 7 inch tablet is just plain insane, imo. It's got a nice screen but so does the Nook Color, for $350 less. But yes, you have to hack that one, as well.

That's not really the point though, is it?
Is this device as polished as the Galaxy Tab? No. Does this have more potential at a good price point? Absolutely.
If you aren't willing to take a little risk and aren't enjoying modding your device, return it and find one that is good out of the box for more money. Rude comments to others on the board because they don't agree with your opinion is unnecessary and unwarranted.
I actually enjoy tweaking phones/tablets
Yes for me, its worth it; as a companion device to my HTC EVO when I want to travel light without a laptop.
Phone has a big 4.4 inch screen and does everything well, however prolonged use of some applications gives me eye strain! Viewsonic is nicely priced to get more real estate for browsing, games, remote access and for creating documents. Battery life is good enough for a long haul flight.
Phone can be used to create a 4G wifi hotspot for viewsonic to use, so no need for a data plan.
I am sure the ViewSonic ROMs will get to a very stable state in the not so distant future, in the meantime, I enjoy the learning curve associated with configuring the device. If you are not into tweaking then it may not be the right product for you....
~~
Phone: HTC EVO with EViO
Tablet: Viewsonic with TnT Lite
I had my mind set that I was getting a Galaxy Tab. 7" screen, polished hardware and software, decent price and perfect for what I wanted. The more I read, the more I knew I was going to get one. Was all set to go after work and pick one up, but I was reading through XDA about my EVO and stumbled across this community for the g tab.
Needless to say, I never made it to the Sprint store. I started reading and following this forum day and night. Learning, researching and listening to reviews. Seen an ad that Sears would have them for $249 and it was a go.
I could not be happier with my choice and so glad I decided to do a little more reading. The hardware is second to none as far as what is on the market today. The software is getting more and more polished with each beta release of the roms these brilliant guys are cooking up.
Is the viewing angle perfect? NO, but it is useable for my needs. For the price, ease of tinkering and changing roms, it cannot be beat!
I may end up getting one of these... any sales looking to happen soon? Hopefully they go on sale after Christmas lol.
The only thing that's deterring me so far is that I don't see any really good ROMs out for this device. I know it hasn't been out for awhile, but I'm trying to figure out if I should just wait for the Motorola tab to come out or get this one.

I'm sorry you dislike the G-Tablet so much you feel the need to rub it into our faces. I'm opting out of this thread from this point forward.
Playing with the g-tablet is a lot of fun.. I just purchased it past saturday and installed TNT lite 2.2 on it. Just upgraded to 2.4 but got a force close error every 5 seconds. I just loaded Vegan b3. I do programming for living (wrote a couple of android games). It is not about the $200 dollars for me, I just feel satisfied and fun when I play with it. Otherwise, I will just buy an Ipad, 50% of my co-workers have IPad..
" ... losing sleep over it and spending endless hours..."
I for one, agree with above posted statement.
I've been losing sleep since the day I picked it up from sears.
Almost every nite, my wife has to pry Gtab off my hands ...
" Is it really worth it?"
GTab x2 = Galaxy Tab (in term of $$$). ---> I should buy another GTab so I can flash different ROM!
I've had the gpad for almost 2 weeks now and I had a learning curve
for some things. I also, learned alot during that time line. I like the gpad
and it does what I need it to do.
I got it for surfing the net, sending gmail, watching movies and some
gaming too. I'm still missing one game that I play to kill time .. It's
plants vs zombies ... but I hear it's coming in the coming weeks ..
Spending countless hours? on installing rom? How?!
10" cap screen, runs all the apps I want, and is damn fast!
Love my g Tablet!
Anybody who *really* wanted a tablet that was slick and just worked out of the box would just buy an iPad.
Many, if not most people who choose Android over IOS do so because it lets them do stuff like flash roms and add capabilities.

Throwdown: IPAD vs. Gtablet; I bought My wife an IPAD for Xmas!

Ok... I am a die hard NON apple kind of guy. My wife bought her Iphone a year ago leaving me and verizon to fend for ourselves. Then I suggested she buy a Mac book as she has been slamming windows for as long as we have been married. So, after loving angry birds on my Gtab for the past month, I thought, what a perfect gift for her (and me to compare) an IPAD would be. So I bought her one for Christmas.
I have to say, the screen really is fine. The lighter weight and the form factor is sweet too. But, to have to have an app (which they do have an app for everything many free for sure) to view most web sites in a "standard" mode such as to see video on them etc., I still can not see that. And, no add on memory and no real interface... the battle is on!
I will update you periodically as I try and see it from an Apple user perspective.
That IPS screen is very nice. Did some after Xmas shopping today and took another look at the iPad. It's the one thing that really stands out on the iPad, versus the GTab.
I know that, in time, Android tablets will catch up (Notion Ink? please don't be vaporware).

Hold off, since rumors of some form of USB, microsd, and additional camera functionality will not die in regard to iPad 2011 models.
I can not look at the iPad display, since I then have to reacclimate to G's dispaly. ..... ....
Man, just think of the Gtablet with at least a Galaxy Tab level display.....
Here's my guess on the iPad v2 - it will almost certainly have a camera. Makes sense for Facetime.
A USB port and / or a microSD slot would be a major shocker, so I highly doubt that would happen. It goes against the walled-garden approach that Apple loves so much.
I have been an iphone user for two years. You may heard this before but lack of flash of support equals COMPLETE FAIL as I an an avid news junkie and enjoy news clips.
Now if only Netflix and google can work out their differences and bring official support for streaming netflix to droid devices then I will be switching to droid in the spring when my phone contract is due for renewal.
PS, I have owned an apple PC and it would not run 1/5th the software that was available while the apple had software support for virtually NOTHING that I needed on the PC and couldn't get.
My brother and I had this same argument about a year ago where he was praising the superiority of the Mac, about a month later he embarrassingly admitted to me I was absolutely right about the Apple causing him to not have acess to most of the software out there.
At the time I bought my last Dell laptop I spec it out with the 2G Duo Core, a wireless N1 card, a Geforce mobile GT8600, a 7200spd hard drive and 2G of Ram. I went to the apple web site and spec' out the SAME configuration, it was over $1,000 MORE!
Same hardware, LESS software, nearly double the price.
Come on...how is that EVEN a contest? I have since upgraded that same laptop to Win 7 32b and it STILL runs like a champ (do you think that would have been the case with a macbook?)
By the way, my viewsonic (although a tad buggy at this time) was 25% cheaper than an ipad and the only real advantage I can see of the ipad was superior screen while it has weaker hardware, and I am 100% confident that the Droid 2.2 and coming honeycomb will equal or surpass the ipad in the coming year.
Gauntlet thrown, Apple failed.
I do love my iphone but I have physically thrown it after getting literally thousands of video errors with flash videos news sites not to mention the fact that the vast majority of "apps" are just dumb downed versions of web pages that I do not really care for (there are quite a few with functionaity for actual mobile use but many apps are just "internet for idiots". What I am saying here is that I am not impressed with "who has the most apps" I just need certain specific ones (which you can get from EITHER company pretty much).
I personally have a love/hate relationship with Apple.
My first laptop was a greyscale PowerBook, I've used all the older pre-10 iterations and I think OSX is an outstanding achievement. But iOS just burns me up and I can see that they are expanding this walled-garden mentality into their Mac products, as well. No standard external ports like USB, no external storage, nothing allowed on the device except through iTunes, no Flash just because Jobs is pissed off that Adobe dumped them for MS. I just hate that with a passion. And the iPad v1 is the culmination of everything I loathe about them.
But, it does have a really nice screen.
I am a veteran of the Windows/Mac Wars of the 90s and the one thing I learned is: If it does what you want and I can run what I want, then I don't care what you run. If you like Apple, if you like Win7, if you like Linux, if you like iOS, if you like Android, if you like webOS... then bully for you! I happen to like some of those myself, so whoop de do!
But tell me my platform sucks or try to spend 30min telling me WHY my platform sucks, well, I have better things to do, thanks.

I Gave My iPad to my Wife
I gave my iPad to my wife to read her Kindle books on. I bought my gTablet on November 17th, and I have not missed my iPad. I am loving my gTablet, and it is just getting better and better with time. I am running TNT Lite 3.1.2 on mine. With flash, adhoc wi-fi support, and the full market, I am plenty happy. I am looking forward to the bright future of the gTablet.
Doing some research on video out on the IPAD. It has a selection of cables for composite, component and vga, but guess what? Only very few apps output to video such as movies, photos and not much else.
When I hooked up my HDMI to my dock today, EVERYTHING I saw on the screen was showing on the big screen.

You are far more qualified than me to make this assessment but if you are only designing your OS to have functionality with very specific in house written end user software, I would think it would be EASY to achieve a tighter higher performaing OS.
Do the circumstances of how osx exsists in the first place not SIGNIFICANTLY diminish its level of "oustanding" as an achievement?

Fair points. Although unfortunately for all of us here, if a thing sucks it is going to suck regardless of what any individual really thinks. Suckage is an absolute and will be unaffected by all the good will of the world. Rotten meat will not become premium meat because 1000 people love it. Unfortunately this seems to be the casse with apple. In the 80s A Team and Knight Rider were top shows, just because people were watching did not make them actually good. Just because lots of people are buying Ipads does not over come the facts of an absolute and unavoidable conclusion based on the facts (listed above about ports, camera, storage devices, flash, cost, etc etc.). Its not really about convincing or anyones opinion. Its just a fact that it sucks, kind of like how the world is round (regardless of if anyone likes said fact or not).

LOL, well your credibility for providing a non-bias Apple user perspective is tainted by stating you're a "die hard NON apple kind of guy". jk. My sister in law has an Ipad and I think its just a great big Ipod touch which is actually a compliment. It's so smooth and pretty to look at. Did you download skyfire on the Ipad? I heard it was out as an app. I'm curious to see how it runs on the Ipad.
Let us know.
Thanks

Here's my guess on the iPad v2 - it will almost certainly have a camera. Makes sense for Facetime.
A USB port and / or a microSD slot would be a major shocker, so I highly doubt that would happen. It goes against the walled-garden approach that Apple loves so much.

I agree, a ff camera will be on the Ipad 2. You know Apple was gonna do that anyways but decided to leave it out so people will be more likely to upgrade. That's why I'm so leary when buying apple products or any product for that matter. I want it to have my minimum requirements at least for me to consider buying it.
I also agree that it will not have expandable memory which is a shame.

I think folks will be surprised and there will either be USB function, or micro sd options (both?). The only thing holding Apple back from complete market domination are those issues and people that hate Apple. Though Apple can do nothing for the latter, they can compromise with the former.
There should be some decent "leaks" in about a month. We shall see.........
My first computer back in the late 70's was an Apple ][. That was back in the days of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Even back then it was clear that the Woz only really cared about the technology and Jobs only really cared about the money. I was an avid Apple defender back then but a few years later we had Apple taken over, Woz and Jobs were out and Peter Skelly was in. Skelly had been the CEO of Pepsi Cola and his knowledge of technology consisted of being able to flip the on/off switch on lights, computers and various electrical items. Eventually he had the sense to bring Jobs back in.
Here's the problem, Jobs is glorious at design and ergonomic functionality, he is also a true technophile. He designs magnificent looking machines with super friendly GUI's that people love. But, once you get past the look of his machines you find that they offer simple AND limited functionality, and that is the very reason that the great masses love Apple machines.
Because people love the look and feel of the machines they are willing to pay bloated prices for what they see as "superior" technology when really the only thing superior is the physical design and ease of use for the technically unannointed. That is GREAT business, but lousy geekiness.
You can't knock Apple's ability to design machines that sell and make piles of money and you can't knock their success. For me, the problem is that I don't want to give them my money anymore because their machines aren't "fun".
My first priority is that my techno gadgets be functional and a close second is that they must be fun. Apple doesn't fit into that nook. Even so I did buy three Mac's a couple of years ago and found that their build quality was poor and that surprised me a lot. But in business, public perception is a bigger selling point that anything else and Apple got that right, too bad they didn't get the technical end right.

I came across this old thread while researching the GTablet. The only thing that is really holding me back from buying one is the screen. The videos I see on Youtube make the screen look really bad, especially one that has a side by side comparison of the Gtablet vs Ipad. Since the GTablet has been out for awhile now, are those who own it still happy? I need to find a B&M store that has one so I can check it out, I really wish it had an IPS screen like the iPad though. I dont get why somebody doesnt come out with a killer Android tablet that can really compete with the iPad.

I picked the gtab because I like to customize the gtab and try different Roms. I am very happy with mine using vegan tab. Flash has been a big bonus. The screen works surprisingly well. Sure, its not perfect, but this gtab has some power and is 400 bucks less than xoom. If you like out of the box OS and don't like to tinker, then get the 16GB iPad from best buy for $399. Battery life on the gtab is awesome. I wake up at 4am and use it throughout the day and heavy use by evening. I will have several hours left on the battery when I go to bed around 9pm. Try Office depot, as many have them in stock to play with. Good luck.

So I was having the same issues before I picked up the gtablet, and having used it for a few days, the screen isn't really that bad. I also love the more widescreen aspect of it vs the ipad allows for better media watching. But it does mean you have to dive more into the device and its setup (custom roms, etc) and if that is daunting to you then I would skip the gtablet.
No issues with geek stuff like flashing ROMs. Ive been an Android user since the G1, member here on xda since then. I currently have a SGS Vibrant, rooted with Bionix.
So, what would you compare the screen to? I have a nearby Office Depot, will try to check it out tomorrow. Is the GTablet the best thing going right now? From the specs, it seems so. One last thing, what are you using to protect it? Screen protector? Case?

With the newest official and unofficial VS update, you may not need to use an alternative ROM.
I would compare the screen directly to a netbook screen. It is by no means imho as horrid as some would have you think, but it's not for everyone. Some people feel you should be able to see what's on the phone/tablet screens while they sit flat on a desk and you're in a chair - while I think it's nice to be able to, I certainly don't think it's necessary to enjoy it and this is just something again, imo vendors have used to inflate the cost of these devices beyond their 'real' practical value. "why is our tablet $800 when so and so is selling one with the same internals for $300? well, have you SEEEEEN our screen? BIG difference!" yeah, you get my drift.
Spec-wise, I think it's a toss-up between the GTablet and it's siblings (interpad, hanspree tablet, malata zpad, avent vega, etc.) or the Notion Ink Adam. As you probably know, the iPad is pretty nice but it's def. lacking in terms of (imo, again) certain little details where the GTablet and other Android devices with similar specs excel and you would have to either learn to live in Apple's walled garden or do some 'techie' stuff in order to jailbreak anyway. Is it the BEST right now? I don't know - probably not. It was released in Nov. 2010, there's bound to be something with similar specs and a 'better' screen by now, if not then yeah it's probably the best VALUE for what you get as of right now.
I would have got her an ipad too.
Don't get me wrong I love my gtab, but I exhaust so much time modifying and fixing my own one. I don't mind that for myself but stuffed if I'm gonna spend my entire free time fixing someone elses tablet. Ipad can't do as much but in return I don't have to ever look at it or maintain it hence freeing up my spare time.

[Q] Should I Wait for Prime? Is it Worth It?

Thread was moved to Q&A NEXT TIME PUT IN CORRECT FORUM.- The Moderator
Hey guys, I need a little help here,
First off im from Singapore and I first settled on Transformer Prime as the tablet i was gonna buy. I dont know whether the prime is releasing in December for singapore or if they are gonna push it till 2012 Jan. i just wanted to ask if the 100 (est.) bucks extra is worth the advantages and the wait?
What Im gonna use my new tablet for
Entertainment and Productivity substitute for my laptop on the go: Music, Movies, Ebooks, Taking Notes in School (im a student), Internet surfing, mild gaming, Video Conferencing (seldom), taking photos (seldom)
Pricing Details in SGD
Transformer TF101 (with dock) : $699 (may be able to bag a few extra goodies thanks to the upcoming IT Fair)
Transformer Prime (with dock) : estimated $810 - $830
(I'm planning to get the dock also because the keyboard and extended battery life would really come in handy. Was also one of the reasons i chose the transformer over others)
Advantages as far as I can see with the Prime vs TF101
Quad Core vs Dual Core
Aethetics (thinner, more good looking etc) (not a MAJOR issue but it would be nice to have a better looking tablet)
16GB vs 32 GB on board memory (not really an issue cause I have a 32gb microSD which is more than enough memory, worst come to worst just use the SD card slot in the dock for extra memory)
8MP vs 5 MP camera
other than these, are there any more significant differences between choosing Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2, ive read that the overall performance is slightly faster on the tegra 3 but is it worth the wait and the 100 odd bucks?
Thanks! Really Appreciate any help you can give me =)
for what your using it for you could go either way
prime will have better battery life be more future proofed and have more grunt if you can afford it do it
if not tf101 is still a great tab in my opinion
Sent from my tf101 using xda premium 1.54Ghz
EVERYTHING is better on the prime, you should wait,
Don't forget the Screen, the sound, everything !
If I were in you I would wait for the release of Prime and go buying the TF101..cause maybe then you will find some offers to buy the first version of the transformer..
Prime will have some bugs when comes out and maybe you have to wait for someone to find a method to root it..
now TF101 is rootable for all versions (also SBKv2) thanks to the RazorClaw method and has already a great active community..
Prime will be lighter and more powerful..but I think TF is just good enough to do what you want to do..
For crying out loud, wait! Wait! Even if it was 3 months out i'd wait.
As stated above, i would wait for 2 reasons... Wait for any possible defects to be identified and addressed first. Then wait for it to be rooted and even wait for a custom rom to be developed for it.

And by then, Samsung or somebody will have a tab in the works, and then you'll have to wonder if you should buy THAT when it comes out. . . .
As the vast majority of tablet use (mine anyway) is way below the threshold of the device, spending so much money is just crazy just so I'll be on the bleeding edge. To me, $810 is ridiculous.
Buy a TF101 and donate $400 to charity.

That's your prerogative if you want to fall victim to buying everything new thing that comes out. They love people like you. It all depends on what you are looking for...being on the absolute bleeding edge, you come to accept that you may have defects and that your device may not be able to be rooted yet. For me, its a comfortable medium between bleeding edge and functionality. I would rather have a TF101 rev with no defects and with the ability to be rooted and rom'ed, than having a TF Prime that just hit the shelves with possible defects and no possibility of being rooted/rom'ed for a good while.
Tend to agree with a mixture of the above:
Buy what will do the jobs you want to do
The next gen after Prime is probably already being developed
Save some money if you can if the tf101 fits your needs.
Or get a preowned tf for now and then sell it on again to part fund the prime.
My wife asked me the other day what I will be able to do with the Prime that I can't do with my OG Transformer. My honest answer was: absolutely nothing. I realized that there is literally nothing* that the Prime will do out of the box day one that the TF can't do, and over time the only difference will be that the Prime will eventually run some games a little faster/better as they're optimized for Tegra 3.
However, I'll still be getting the Prime, and here's why: it's better in every single aspect of what makes a tablet enjoyable to use:
1. The Prime is faster, so there should be fewer frustrating hesitations and lags. ICS might help that on the TF, but the Prime will still provide a better experience.
2. It's thinner and lighter. I'm actually envious of my wife with her Galaxy Tab 10.1, because it's so much nicer to hold in actual use. The TF isn't _terrible_, but the GT is definitely more pleasant.
3. I can _just barely_ use the TF outside in direct sunlight, if I squint and hold it at _just_ the right angle. With almost double the brightness, the Prime should be very usable when I'm outside on the back porch getting some sun and wanting to read an ebook.
4. The anti-fingerprint coating would be welcome. I spend more than a few minutes a day just cleaning the screen on my TF.
5. The Prime should have significantly improved sound, perhaps the best that's yet shipped on a tablet. I like decent quality sound, and while not terrible, the TF is a bit of a disappointment in this area.
6. 30% better battery life would mean I'll _never_ have to worry about plugging in the Prime during my typical usage patterns. As it is, I'm sometimes lacking just about an hour with the TF and need to plug in. The Prime should mean I never have to worry about it. Of course, having 18 hours with the dock will also be incredible.
7. I don't care about the 32GB vs. 16GB storage, and would rather have a $399 Prime to choose, but I understand why ASUS is positioning things the way they are. And $499 for the 32GB Prime will still be $100 cheaper than $599 for the 32GB iPad 2.
8. I don't often take pictures using my TF, but man, those sample shots taken with the Prime sure do look nice. Hell, those are heads and shoulders better than I get from my Motorola Photon, and so who knows, maybe I'll find opportunities to use the Prime's camera.
The only thing the Prime doesn't seem to have that I wish it did is haptic feedback (I was surprised how much I like it on my wife's GT 10.1). But of course the TF doesn't have it either, so it's a wash.
I'll be willing to spend a couple hundred dollars to upgrade to the Prime (after selling my TF+dock combo) simply because the Prime is so much better. ASUS basically fixed every weakness of the TF, and kept the best thing about it--the dock. That's worth the money to me.
*As I thought about it more, I realized that because it has NEON, the Tegra 3 is better at high-def video. However, I never watch high-def video on my TF, and so _for me_ there's literally nothing.
THANK YOU EVERYONE for you replies, its given me a lot of food for thought regarding this. Being my first tablet, i want to make sure i make the right decision. Thank you so much. i value all your comments =D

You have a first generation Asus tablet, so are you one of those victims that you speak of? If the prime can't be rooted right away, its not a brick. You can have plenty of use with it until it WILL be rootable. Its only a matter of time. Each to his own, but I'd rather have the slimmer, lighter, faster unit for a bit more cash. Hands down. These things are on a yearly cycle, maybe 18 months. You can't sit back too long or you will be asking these questions about the NEXT tablet, and so on...
Not exactly. I have a B60 revision of the tf, so I didn't buy it the day it hit the shelves. This rev corrected defects in the previous revs. Not to mention that when I bought my tf, it was already rootable and custom roms were already available. It is also my first and only tab to date. So no, I am not the person to go rush out and buy the latest and greatest thing. I will most likely end up buying the prime, but not the day it hits the shelves.

>However, I'll still be getting the Prime, and here's why: it's better in every single aspect of what makes a tablet enjoyable to use:
I think the hardest thing is to be honest (objective) with oneself. Most of reasons you provided sound like rationalizing, indicated by the "better in every single aspect" hyperbole.
>1. The Prime is faster, so there should be fewer frustrating hesitations and lags. ICS might help that on the TF, but the Prime will still provide a better experience.
>...over time the only difference will be that the Prime will eventually run some games a little faster/better
You're contradicting yourself. Anyway, the lags experienced in normal use are due to the OS, as you said it yourself. The objective answer here would be to wait for ICS, than to pay another $500.
>2. It's thinner and lighter.
Thinness doesn't contribute to being more enjoyable to use. It only provides better aesthetics, which mattered only for a short while. It contributes to the lust of new toys; that's basically it.
The Prime isn't that much lighter to justify the $500 (additional) expenditure. This is rationalizing, unless of course $500 is chump change for you. But if so, you wouldn't have gone through all this soul-searching.
>3. I can _just barely_ use the TF outside in direct sunlight.
How often do you use your TF outside in direct daylight?
>4. The anti-fingerprint coating would be welcome.
A smudge-resistant screen protector would be a better solution.
>5. The Prime should have significantly improved sound, perhaps the best that's yet shipped on a tablet.
Note the "should." And the "perhaps the best" is pure hyperbole. These fall into the "wishful" category.
Ditto for the rest of your proffered reasons.
I'm not saying you should or shouldn't buy. Only you can decide that. I'm merely pointing out the futility of trying to rationalize the purchase of a new toy. Cut to the chase and keep it simple: You want it, and you can afford it. That's it.
I think obviously waiting for Transformer Prime is the best thing you ever do.
Asus Transformer TF101 have sharp edges. It hurts my hand when holding it. Also, the screen is not that sensitive. Asus promise a more sensitive screen.
And with Quadcore, longer battery life, slimmer, nicer to hold, and more future proof, waiting for Transformer Prime is no brainer. This question should not be asked in the first place.

The only part of your post that I can answer objectively: I live in Southern California. So, you figure it out.
>Well, you know, you certainly spent a great deal of time trying to convince me that my opinion is incorrect. So, okay, sure, whatever.
This is a beeswaxing thread. It's all opinions. There is no right or wrong.
The reason I replied is that you were honest with your spouse, that the Prime would impart marginal utility, but then did a complete 180 in trying to justify it to yourself. The irony of it was striking enough to elicit a response.
I well understand techno-lust. That's why we're all here. There's no justifying it, other than that's part of being a techie.
If I had the money to waste on it... I would. The thing is, everyone else has pointed out good points already, but I think the biggest thing you might want to keep in mind is whether or not you will decide to wait it out even after Prime is released.. you know? To avoid hardware/quality issues similar to people with the first transformer? For example, I got mine around July, and by then, I unboxed my transformer and it was completely usable right out of the box (with the exception of netflix). But there were people who bought it months earlier and had lots of issues and bugs, as well as hardware problems.
So... do you think you can wait long enough for it? Honestly, if you've waited this long, you might as well wait a little longer. You'd only be paying like 100 dollars more than what you'd pay for the transformer, but the expected potential is much greater. The potential might NOT be realized, but it's always nice that you could possibly play better video games and whatnot. Good luck by the way.

This Asus Transformer Prime is 2nd version of Asus Transformer. So it'll be less bug.
You can buy it at the first day launch without big issue.
The only issue might be screen bleeding and dust under the glass. That one you can check it during purchase or return it to get a new one.
>Asus Transformer TF101 have sharp edges. It hurts my hand when holding it.
So the Prime's edges are less sharp?
"Thin" isn't always good.

::::Calling my fellow Android users::::

Okay, here's the deal:
My mother goes to school part time, for her work who requires her too. bottom line is she has like 4 essays to write but one of them i told her - since im an Android junkie - i would give her at least a really good outline for.
Here's where I ask you guys for help, cause I think I have my main points but still maybe you all can put in your main points (two or three) so I can get some other ideas as well.
heres the topic:
Why the Android OS is BETTER THAN the iPhone OS for the ORDINARY CONSUMER.
So the thing to keep in mind here when I write this is that it is for a normal, everyday consumer.... This is the main reason I ask you guys for input is because it is hard for ME to separate the geeky points from points that the students in her class would see.
Anyways, thanks for anyone who has some input as I need to write a good outline for my mom before she goes into work tonight, again thanks.
Found this while in a os battle with my buddy and his iPhone. This has got 5 good plot points from a user perspective.

Freedom. Want a screen bigger than 3.5"? There's a phone out there. 16gb of storage not enough? Spend 20 bucks more and double your storage with a micro sd card. Want to install an app that isn't on the market? Download another appstore or the apk file itself. Don't want to have to deal with iTunes for music? Congrats, just drag and drop files from any computer or download many different music stores with Android.

The single largest freedom an Android device grants a and user is the ability to utilize a MicroSD (or ANY) memory card for expanded or interchangeable memory.
You can unmount and remount sdcards on the fly, so you can change them out without turning the unit off and keep a whole mess of media on a bunch of cards.
(this memory card for Rock, this memory card for Blues, this memory card for action movies, this memory card for etc...)
The greatest hardware improvement over an i-something is the option of a hardware keyboard. You will also never see this on an i-pocket device. This is something we are all familiar with right here moreso then elsewhere and bears no further explanation.
The biggest frustration shed by an end user when leaving the communistic apple universe is ditching iTunes. - No more need be said on that either here, you can fill in the details on that.
Android is encouraged to be used on any device that can be made to run it. iOS runs on 3 (and only 3) pieces of hardware. Android offers users a choice of hardware that fits their needs and budgets, not just a single price point at take it or leave it.
Due to the 'promiscuous licensing' of Android (as steve jobs has been known to say) Android devices can consistently offer hardware that is at least one (if not more) generation(s) ahead of what the single Apple phone offers.
(Android has quad core processors now - what's the iPhone got?)
Bottom line is the two contenders can be summed up quite simply:
Apple = control
Android = freedom
In an Apple ecosystem you can do what Apple says you can do, when they say you can do it, precisely the way they allow you to do it and no more.
In an Android ecosystem you are encouraged to seek innovative ways of doing things and utilizing the hardware and software.
----
A jailbroken i-device still offers less freedoms then a full-security on and locked Android device. So an i-something at it's most open state is still more locked down then an Android in it's most locked state.
----
I don't have any more time and there were quite a few other points I wanted to touch on, but that should be some to get the outline started in addition to what is or hopefully will be posted.
Good luck!
Most android phones have removable batteries so you can always keep a spare on you.
More customizable. You can pretty much change any software aspect of the phone.
There are android phones on many carriers including a lot of prepaid carriers.
Devices running android are generally cheaper than devices running iOS.
Choice of screen size and resolution even up to 720p on phones.
Thought of a couple more. You have a choice of size and also more color choices... You don't just get to choose between black and white because there are so many different colored android powered devices out there.
Hmmm... A lot of other stuff has already been covered, but if I think of anything else I will post it.
for the average user it really is just down to money.
cheaper phones (with way better price/performance ratio) and cheaper/more free apps.
the average joe won't even notice the difference in freedom you can have with android over ios
Go on Rootz. I did a whole did on this. It's Under the username "NomyNomyNomy".

Multitasking is a real nightmare on the iPhone...
I can't stand the fact that I'm flipping through 4 apps at a time
Not to mention the smaller screen and lack of widgets. I also like the app drawer in android, compared to the sliding panes in iOS. It's just easier to navigate through all your apps, instead of flipping from page 1 to 9. Oh, that brings me onto the leap screen, which is a neat little feature to get from one screen to another quickly.
When I used iOS I was Jailbroken and had my iPhone looking like a Nexus S. Also, I had my 3G running Sense 2.1. I liked iOS for the Apps, but Android caught up.

Freedom of choice. This is it. There's all sorts of shapes, sizes, options, UI choices; you name it. You want choices? Android's the platform to go to.
Unfortunately, you pay for this freedom of choice for usability for everyday users that don't really care about rooting, SD cards, using something that isn't iTunes for music, and a lot of other things.
Personally, I disagree with you mostly because I deal with all of this nonsense all the time and a normal person won't care to explore the potential of something they have bought, let alone paying more than $50 for something that isn't the O GREAT IPHONE. Great for people like us who care about doing the most we can with what we buy, but most people "can't be bothered" to actually try doing something with the things they buy.

That's not the point though... The outline isn't for what OS is better it's for why android is better...
Also I thought of something else... Most android devices are built stronger than than iOS devices and aren't totally encased in alumina-silicate glass the iPhone uses and when they do use glass it's gorilla glass which is many times stronger than alumina-silicate glass the iPhone uses. So basically android devices can withstand falls better than the iPhone (some being better than others).
Has anyone mentioned, no freakin' back button on the iPhone? I've had a few users complain about that in my presence.... must be maddening!

I agree with you about sdcards, but part of it is also the psychological aspect of "I can!" even if it's never actually done. People like us really get use out of that sdcard slot, but the average joe has the card that came with the phone still in it.
The psychological aspect those same people who can't be bothered to learn anything more then they know about it makes the few distinct things it does different more important to cling to and cry louder in a typical apple fanboi vs average android user comparing phones in a bar or something.
If you paint the average user in the ignorant light that(mostly fairly from what i've seen too, ) you do, then this strawman argument on their behalf carries even more weight, because it's one of their few pieces of ammunition to save face against "O GREAT IPHONE" (lol'd at that btw - it does set the mentality) their actually using it means nothing, it's just the knowledge that they can we care about here.
----
As far as iTunes, I haven't met a single flesh and blood real (not ethereal like all of you online people lol) person that hasn't hated the living daylights out of iTunes.
Again, these are the same types of people that you painted earlier - people that may or may not have an android phone and maybe an ipod touch or something, or an iphone. Their friends might have one or the other of the above devices.
I've heard nothing but the strained frustration of loss from every single one of them to a man (or woman) based on contact with another accounts i-device or host computer...
(...which i'd generally refer to as 'infected' with iTunes on it, because the average user and a foreign i-device = computer owner, device owner, or both losing everything...)
...because these same people that only know what they know and want to learn no more don't even know that you can turn off auto sync and so on, or the rules of when you can or can't connect the devices and not be shedding a tear a few minutes later.
We all either know or would figure out within minutes of opening the app how to handle everything correctly with at least a 90%+ success rate on execution.
The average user? Install iTunes, synce device. 3 weeks later friend comes over. Their i-device gets plugged into the computer. Chaos ensues.

And herein lies the rub, because you are exactly right and the scorn you drop here is the exact equal to:
...the person who takes the time learning how to operate a vehicle properly hear someone say " and they asked me when the last time I changed my oil was, and I said 'what oil?' "
tit for tat that's an exact frame of reference to the perspective you cast for consideration, so it really comes down to:
Where is the person who - after doing the most, and also importantly the most common, maximum level of unintentional damage the most upset? Apple or Android?
The iTunes thing I think everyone would agree puts the saddest person in the Apple camp, also since that burns many people very often.
Thanks so much to all who responded!!!! I gave her the link to this thread and "said you can use what you want"
She responded back tonight when I asked her "did the links I sent you pan out?"
She said this:

Once again: Huge thanks to all who chimed in, turned out great from the outline she sent me!
If you didn't have the time to get your post up before she finished its alright, I'm overwhelmed myself when I see the amount of attention I got from this community
My mom and I appreciate it and I'm sure someone else may come along and need this thread too, so thanks for that
Typed by ---- oh wait! I'm schizophrenic!

I do not want to see this devolve into a petty apple bashing thread, because there is a real message to be had if we agree with the things mentioned above.
This serves to illustrate the importance of treating new people with the ability to look back to when you were like that.
At some point we all had to decide to see what was a little further down the rabbit hole, but the average person that isn't into computer tech loses 2/3rds of their common sense and IQ the moment they sit down at a terminal.
It's just a pre-concieved fear of the unknown, not knowing what you can't do that results in breaking or just messing the whole thing up.
People that aren't familiar with this stuff can be paralyzed by the fear of doing something catastrophically wrong - often to the extreme. If they show up here and start asking questions, then they are taking steps to conquer that and become that person who changes their oil.
This should serve as a good reminder of what it was like for you, whoever you are reading this, when you first started wondering how to tinker with your device.
Here and there you can see when someone forgets what it was like and loses that perspective - Remember this, though, you no longer respect what you can do if you forget what it's like not to be able to.
Take a minute or have an extra shred of patience when someone new starts asking questions, you could be nurturing someone becoming what you are.
The best place to send anyone new first is right Here.
Little Off Topic but throw Espier Launcher on your phone and you will get a slight sense of how it is to be on ios. It gets horrid. With the loss of freedom.

Pioneer R1 7" tablet - PICKED UP, System Info and Quadrant score PAGE 2

Last night I purchased an HP 7 1800 tablet however at midnight this new tablet showed up for the same price. A Pioneer R1 7" tablet, has better specs and a dual-core processor for the same price. It also features Jelly Bean 4.2 instead of 4.1. Also features a mini-HDMI port which is a plus. I decided to cancel the HP order and get this one instead.

Looks decent and there's a good array of color choices too. I think it's a better choice than the HP for the same price.
EDIT: As of 12PM PST, it is still listed at $89.99. Not sold out yet, all colors available.
Updated it with a link from the Pioneer website instead of a direct Wal Mart link.
Thanks
Thanks for the heads up. I was looking for a tablet for my wife and this seems like a good deal. She wouldnt know the different between this and the best any plus for the price you cant beat it.

No problem, it seems like a better deal than the HP so I wanted to let people know about it that may have wanted to buy a budget tablet.
Not a fan of colors but it leaves some good choices for those who don't want to be bland or plain black/white.
Anyone have any info on this platform, modding, rooting, etc?
Anyone have any info on this tablet?
Can't seem to find any software or much hardware info anywhere. If anyone has one it would be nice to shed some light on this thing.
Since nobody knows anything about this, I'll post a review with pictures when I pick it up on Monday.
Hoping I can root this and put a custom rom on it. KitKat would be awesome.

Thanks, that's very helpful!
Looks like a good deal! Please do post your thoughts!
Picked up the tablet today.
Right off the bat I am disappointed to say that there are marks and scratches on the screen right out of the box. The center is very washed out as well and super grainy. I honestly don't know how this would've gotten past quality control.
This is a big strike and I have contacted Wal-Mart about an exchange. I would go to the store I picked it up from but they don't carry this tablet in store.
So overall I'm not very happy right now considering I waited over a week to get this and it's already disappointing me before playing with it. Maybe I can exchange it for the HP tablet instead. Who knows. Pictures soon.
Where can I find the info necessary to see whether or not I can root this?
System info:
In Android System Info it states the board is a Gigabyte but doesn't give any other detail. Board is labeled as an R1.
CPU Model: Samsung Exynos 4412
GPU Model: Mali-400 MP
Kernel: Linux version 3.0.50-g5f580f3-dirty ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.6.x-google 20120106 (prerelease)(GCC))
Quadrant score.
So far app availability is meh. Can't even download Instagram.
Returned this for a full refund and spent a little more money to get the Asus MemoPad HD7. Should've done this to begin with I guess.
WTF!
Matt - Wish I came across your posting but me & you were on the same page about our purchase @ first. I figured pioneer. You can't go wrong. I am just looking for a tablet since its my first & if I could afford an ipad I would. Interesting that the both of our tablets were scratched up. I am angry as I waited a week & a half & I plan on traveling across the country in a week.
Matt - who from Walmart do I contact for a full refund?
I am still testing the product out but I am unhappy with the screen as well as the scratches. Not cool at all. All that I want is a good tablet for a noob to watch movies & read books.
Seriously, there arent many reviews since pioneer partnered with Walmart to bring this tablet out. I did extensive research before making my purchase.
I most likely will return & head to best buy. Unhappy.

I purchased it online. To return it I printed out an "easy return receipt" and returned it at my local Wal-Mart store for a full refund.
I went ahead and ordered the Asus Memopad HD7 from Wal-Mart, it was $139. Well worth the slight price difference for a much better tablet. Asus quality, great specs for the money and an amazing HD display.

Bit late for both of you im sure, but did you remove the scratch protector thing that it comes with already on the screen? There is a plastic protective film that does indeed look like the screen is scratched up because its so perfectly applied that you don't even know it has one on it until you carefully scratch at a corner of the tablet and realize it can be peeled off.
Also wanted to add for anybody that finds this as some of the very limited info on this tablet out there, its realllly not worth it right now, while its not horrible, it surely has a cheap feel to the whole affair. It will do basic tasks without much fuss, but many apps are unavailable right now on the store, a lot of the more intense games will simply cause the tablet to lock up and require a hard reset (with the highly annoying pinhole reset button on the back, because we all carry something to poke that tiny button with on the go) even watching a few videos has thrown up a lock up on occasion. Its still serviceable for now, and it will do okay for my wife for the time being, but im much much happier with the Monster m7 I picked up for the same exact price (99 bucks) At least it has run every game and app ive thrown at it without a hitch so far which I simply cant say for the Pioneer.

Just got this tablet as a present for a 7 month baby
Loves her mom's iphone, so I decided to get her this
Got it from walmart. The price right now is only $60
Came in today....the scratches on the screen are actually on a screen protector used by the manufacturer. It needs to be removed and a new one is included.
Went to the Playstore and 95% of the apps I use on all of my tablets are available for this unit...only a few were not.
Very happy with it...sometimes it feels a little slow, but then it picks up
I was able to stream 1080p movies using plex, with Directplay, no transcoding.
Temple run 1 and 2 run just fine and load quite fast
Very pleased for $60
Now, let the chewing begin

Really? Temple run 2 crashes within 5 minutes no matter how many times i try to reinstall it. Quite a few games randomly crash honestly, the thing gets HOT playing any games.

I don't normally play games...just install them for the kids
However, you just made me play temple run 1 for 10 minutes...testing this unit
It does get warm...but no crashes yet...I also watched about 20 minutes of a movie, through plex, 1080p MP4, direct streaming...no problems there either

Also, On eBay, look up, Apad rubber case
It looks to be very similar to this pioneer R1 tablet.
I bought one, hopefully it will fit nicely
