Hey guys, I need a little help here,
First off im from Singapore and I first settled on Transformer Prime as the tablet i was gonna buy. I dont know whether the prime is releasing in December for singapore or if they are gonna push it till 2012 Jan. i just wanted to ask if the 100 (est.) bucks extra is worth the advantages and the wait?
What Im gonna use my new tablet for
Entertainment and Productivity substitute for my laptop on the go: Music, Movies, Ebooks, Taking Notes in School (im a student), Internet surfing, mild gaming, Video Conferencing (seldom), taking photos (seldom)
Pricing Details in SGD
Transformer TF101 (with dock) : $699 (may be able to bag a few extra goodies thanks to the upcoming IT Fair)
Transformer Prime (with dock) : estimated $810 - $830
(I'm planning to get the dock also because the keyboard and extended battery life would really come in handy. Was also one of the reasons i chose the transformer over others)
Advantages as far as I can see with the Prime vs TF101
Quad Core vs Dual Core
Aethetics (thinner, more good looking etc) (not a MAJOR issue but it would be nice to have a better looking tablet)
16GB vs 32 GB on board memory (not really an issue cause I have a 32gb microSD which is more than enough memory, worst come to worst just use the SD card slot in the dock for extra memory)
8MP vs 5 MP camera
other than these, are there any more significant differences between choosing Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2, ive read that the overall performance is slightly faster on the tegra 3 but is it worth the wait and the 100 odd bucks?

prime will have better battery life be more future proofed and have more grunt if you can afford it do it

Don't forget the Screen, the sound, everything !
If I were in you I would wait for the release of Prime and go buying the TF101..cause maybe then you will find some offers to buy the first version of the transformer..
Prime will have some bugs when comes out and maybe you have to wait for someone to find a method to root it..
now TF101 is rootable for all versions (also SBKv2) thanks to the RazorClaw method and has already a great active community..
Prime will be lighter and more powerful..but I think TF is just good enough to do what you want to do..
For crying out loud, wait! Wait! Even if it was 3 months out i'd wait.
As stated above, i would wait for 2 reasons... Wait for any possible defects to be identified and addressed first. Then wait for it to be rooted and even wait for a custom rom to be developed for it.

And by then, Samsung or somebody will have a tab in the works, and then you'll have to wonder if you should buy THAT when it comes out. . . .
As the vast majority of tablet use (mine anyway) is way below the threshold of the device, spending so much money is just crazy just so I'll be on the bleeding edge. To me, $810 is ridiculous.
Buy a TF101 and donate $400 to charity.

That's your prerogative if you want to fall victim to buying everything new thing that comes out. They love people like you. It all depends on what you are looking for...being on the absolute bleeding edge, you come to accept that you may have defects and that your device may not be able to be rooted yet. For me, its a comfortable medium between bleeding edge and functionality. I would rather have a TF101 rev with no defects and with the ability to be rooted and rom'ed, than having a TF Prime that just hit the shelves with possible defects and no possibility of being rooted/rom'ed for a good while.
Tend to agree with a mixture of the above:
Buy what will do the jobs you want to do
The next gen after Prime is probably already being developed
Save some money if you can if the tf101 fits your needs.
Or get a preowned tf for now and then sell it on again to part fund the prime.
My wife asked me the other day what I will be able to do with the Prime that I can't do with my OG Transformer. My honest answer was: absolutely nothing. I realized that there is literally nothing* that the Prime will do out of the box day one that the TF can't do, and over time the only difference will be that the Prime will eventually run some games a little faster/better as they're optimized for Tegra 3.
However, I'll still be getting the Prime, and here's why: it's better in every single aspect of what makes a tablet enjoyable to use:
1. The Prime is faster, so there should be fewer frustrating hesitations and lags. ICS might help that on the TF, but the Prime will still provide a better experience.
2. It's thinner and lighter. I'm actually envious of my wife with her Galaxy Tab 10.1, because it's so much nicer to hold in actual use. The TF isn't _terrible_, but the GT is definitely more pleasant.
3. I can _just barely_ use the TF outside in direct sunlight, if I squint and hold it at _just_ the right angle. With almost double the brightness, the Prime should be very usable when I'm outside on the back porch getting some sun and wanting to read an ebook.
4. The anti-fingerprint coating would be welcome. I spend more than a few minutes a day just cleaning the screen on my TF.
5. The Prime should have significantly improved sound, perhaps the best that's yet shipped on a tablet. I like decent quality sound, and while not terrible, the TF is a bit of a disappointment in this area.
6. 30% better battery life would mean I'll _never_ have to worry about plugging in the Prime during my typical usage patterns. As it is, I'm sometimes lacking just about an hour with the TF and need to plug in. The Prime should mean I never have to worry about it. Of course, having 18 hours with the dock will also be incredible.
7. I don't care about the 32GB vs. 16GB storage, and would rather have a $399 Prime to choose, but I understand why ASUS is positioning things the way they are. And $499 for the 32GB Prime will still be $100 cheaper than $599 for the 32GB iPad 2.
8. I don't often take pictures using my TF, but man, those sample shots taken with the Prime sure do look nice. Hell, those are heads and shoulders better than I get from my Motorola Photon, and so who knows, maybe I'll find opportunities to use the Prime's camera.
The only thing the Prime doesn't seem to have that I wish it did is haptic feedback (I was surprised how much I like it on my wife's GT 10.1). But of course the TF doesn't have it either, so it's a wash.
I'll be willing to spend a couple hundred dollars to upgrade to the Prime (after selling my TF+dock combo) simply because the Prime is so much better. ASUS basically fixed every weakness of the TF, and kept the best thing about it--the dock. That's worth the money to me.
*As I thought about it more, I realized that because it has NEON, the Tegra 3 is better at high-def video. However, I never watch high-def video on my TF, and so _for me_ there's literally nothing.

You have a first generation Asus tablet, so are you one of those victims that you speak of? If the prime can't be rooted right away, its not a brick. You can have plenty of use with it until it WILL be rootable. Its only a matter of time. Each to his own, but I'd rather have the slimmer, lighter, faster unit for a bit more cash. Hands down. These things are on a yearly cycle, maybe 18 months. You can't sit back too long or you will be asking these questions about the NEXT tablet, and so on...
Not exactly. I have a B60 revision of the tf, so I didn't buy it the day it hit the shelves. This rev corrected defects in the previous revs. Not to mention that when I bought my tf, it was already rootable and custom roms were already available. It is also my first and only tab to date. So no, I am not the person to go rush out and buy the latest and greatest thing. I will most likely end up buying the prime, but not the day it hits the shelves.

I think the hardest thing is to be honest (objective) with oneself. Most of reasons you provided sound like rationalizing, indicated by the "better in every single aspect" hyperbole.

You're contradicting yourself. Anyway, the lags experienced in normal use are due to the OS, as you said it yourself. The objective answer here would be to wait for ICS, than to pay another $500.

Thinness doesn't contribute to being more enjoyable to use. It only provides better aesthetics, which mattered only for a short while. It contributes to the lust of new toys; that's basically it.
The Prime isn't that much lighter to justify the $500 (additional) expenditure. This is rationalizing, unless of course $500 is chump change for you. But if so, you wouldn't have gone through all this soul-searching.

A smudge-resistant screen protector would be a better solution.

Note the "should." And the "perhaps the best" is pure hyperbole. These fall into the "wishful" category.

I think obviously waiting for Transformer Prime is the best thing you ever do.
Asus Transformer TF101 have sharp edges. It hurts my hand when holding it. Also, the screen is not that sensitive. Asus promise a more sensitive screen.
And with Quadcore, longer battery life, slimmer, nicer to hold, and more future proof, waiting for Transformer Prime is no brainer. This question should not be asked in the first place.

The only part of your post that I can answer objectively: I live in Southern California. So, you figure it out.

This is a beeswaxing thread. It's all opinions. There is no right or wrong.
The reason I replied is that you were honest with your spouse, that the Prime would impart marginal utility, but then did a complete 180 in trying to justify it to yourself. The irony of it was striking enough to elicit a response.
I well understand techno-lust. That's why we're all here. There's no justifying it, other than that's part of being a techie.
If I had the money to waste on it... I would. The thing is, everyone else has pointed out good points already, but I think the biggest thing you might want to keep in mind is whether or not you will decide to wait it out even after Prime is released.. you know? To avoid hardware/quality issues similar to people with the first transformer? For example, I got mine around July, and by then, I unboxed my transformer and it was completely usable right out of the box (with the exception of netflix). But there were people who bought it months earlier and had lots of issues and bugs, as well as hardware problems.
So... do you think you can wait long enough for it? Honestly, if you've waited this long, you might as well wait a little longer. You'd only be paying like 100 dollars more than what you'd pay for the transformer, but the expected potential is much greater. The potential might NOT be realized, but it's always nice that you could possibly play better video games and whatnot. Good luck by the way.

This Asus Transformer Prime is 2nd version of Asus Transformer. So it'll be less bug.
You can buy it at the first day launch without big issue.
The only issue might be screen bleeding and dust under the glass. That one you can check it during purchase or return it to get a new one.

News are out with most specs detailed about the Asus Prime. Will you be getting one?
In my personal opinion, Asus Transformer is better looking (brown is more inviting than cold aluminum), it has better proportions, it doesn't look like iPad2, and 4 cores aren't necessary.
Why aren't 4 cores necessary? Because tablets aren't PCs. They are consumption devices and they are used for couch surfing and Gizmodo reading.
Games don't make sense on tablets either because the dynamics are so cumbersome. So even if the Prime will be pulling games like Shadowgun, is that really important? Every game I've played I ended up getting tired of trying to properly position myself so that I can used my hands for both controlling the game and holding my tablet.
Anyways, Transformer pulls HD video and really... what more could you need?

I'm waiting to pick one up, because after getting my tf101 at launch, the old lady wants her own.
Unless someone wants to buy my rooted b50 TF101/dock for the price 9of a Prime, I will not be getting the Prime. For some of the tasks I use my TF for, the Tegra 3 would probably be useful. For the cost it is just not worth it. If there is a follow up to the Prime next year or ditto the year after, I will ****ly then u0grade to the then current device. I'm waiting for the 3rd or 4th Gen, and to see if there [i[will[/i] be, before I invest further.
Right now the only reason I could see to upgrade would be if they blew off giving us ICS, and by the time it is worth it to me to upgrade for that, both the Prime and Android 4.0 will be outdated.

ACtually if you read the technical reviews of Tegra3, then you'd know by now, that the prime (tablet alone) will last longer on battery than the TF101 - well it's just paperform, so the first tests will reveal.
But I won't get one, maybe the summer next fall
just bought a secondhand transformer so I don't really see me getting another tablet until next year.
The answer is: maybe. I probably could buy it for my company (less tax to pay then) but I won't unless it's really much better than Transformer in regards to playing movies for example. As a game developer I also don't want to have the fastest device out there so I can test on more slower devices (I bought old used phone for that reason). But I want to make 3D games next year, so maybe targeting Tegra3 with it won't be so stupid, I don't know yet.
Well ... I really want to get one, but I will wait until it has been rooted, a 3G version is available, and other Tegra 3 Tablets are released, so the price will drop!
...But the problem when waiting for Tech always is, that you are then dealing with an maybe outdated product ... maybe I will end up getting a Windows 8 Tablet
The Transformer Prime should be getting Windows 8 / ICS Dual-Boot ... I would buy it immediately.
As I'm going to install ubuntu on my TF soon (I tried it before when it was not simpleton-friendly and you had to fix wifi and stuff yourself and I was too lazy to figure it out ), I doubt I'll need a TF prime to satisfy my curiosity with new things. But to be honest, I like the copper/brown feel more because when I see that kind of metallic finish, it just brings that disgusting metal on metal sound to my ears (or head, since technically I don't actually hear it, just the memory of it).

I agree, the brown is so much friendly looking. The aluminum is so cold and unpleasent, it also looks quite bad - not to mention how easily it should scratch.
The current transformer's back is so nice, its not cold, it doesn't scratch, its easier to grip and most importantly it's not a fingerprint magnet!
I would like a pink version. Pink is my favorite color.

I have seen a lot of things saying it won't. Yet another reason I won't be doing business with Asus anymore
I'm passing. My TF does all I need it to do right now and I cannot see a compelling reason on the horizon to dump what works.
I got my tf on launch day. I think the prime is exactly what I want build wise. Much thinner, I like the look over the LV-ish brown, dock is slimmer. I really can't wait for it. People are saying its more expensive but its really the same price. It starts at 32 gb instead 16gb for 499 which was what the 32gb tf 1 was. I wont get it on launch day (can't afford it but would if I could)
When I got the dock for the tf I never thought I'd use for anything more than battery power and a stand to watch movies on in bed but the more time I used it, the more and more I used the dock and now can't see having one and not have a dock.

I have to say "Yes, please!" I personally don't own a tablet yet so for me I think it is a good buy. Also after using a friends for a few days some of the docs, pdf, spread sheets ran ok but, I wish it would be a little faster. So I am hoping that the prime will make some of that more snappy.
Been hawking the web just to find a preorder, i really want one. My wife already hates me due to my droid phone compaired to her Iphone. Now I cant wait to see how this stacks up to her ipad. She is starting to hate apple hoping this will be the nail in the coffin.

The Infinity is still relatively new, but there is already quite a bit of development going on with it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1665
As far as official support, such as bug fixes or updates, Asus generally seems to be better and at least faster to get updates out than other manufacturers.
Customer support, however, is a different matter. I haven't dealt with Asus support directly, but there are ample reports about it's horrible quality. For example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1830473&highlight=asus+support
Likewise, Asus' quality control is pretty lax. There are a lot of tablets with issues that never should have passed standard QA checks.
Another related note: they also seem to be selling rebranded TF201 docks as "new" TF700 docks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810592&highlight=tf700+dock
All things considered though, I'm happy with the Infinity overall. I will accompany that with the caveat that I am in fact getting a replacement for my Infinity and dock from Amazon due to some dust under my screen in a very annoying location (right in the center) and because some keys on the dock started registering incorrectly.
Its a good tablet, but its not without its flaws. I'd still pick one up, as Asus is very good about software updates and our dev community is starting to ramp up so we'll get our custom roms.
Some issues that people have had:
-Quality control is very hit or miss
-You're going to have light bleed. Most tablets have it light enough that its only noticeable while booting though, once in Android it goes away.
-Internal flash storage is relatively slow, causing some occasional performance hiccups. If the Prime is any indication, custom roms will easily work around the issue.
-Asus's tech support staff are complete crap that'll insist on RMAing your device even for the most trivial issues.
-Some devices wont receive updates or unlock their bootloader, although in most cases both start working after a few weeks.
Just make sure you get one that's physically well built, and you should like it.

My advice...
If possible wait before buying.
Don't jump in like I did.
I did get a later non buggy Infinity that has no build problems.
The performance of the tablet is what I would say is stellar compared to most of the previous incarnations.
Yet there is competition on the horizon that just might blow the Infinity out of the water.
I ran out and bought the Acer A700 because it was the latest thing and ended up severely disappointed.
So then I jumped over to the Infinity and have been pleased.
If you are a true blue power user\tinkerer the Asus may be good, yet you may be much happier with a later model
10 inch tab that ships with android 4.1 jellybean.
I'll bet the hardware in the upcoming tabs will give the 'ole iPad a real run for the finish line.
As far as the this or that choice...to me it boils down to an OS preference.
I wouldn't make sense for anyone on here to recommend apple over droid.

I have a Asus Prime currently in limbo between Asus and FEDEX for about a month now trying to get it replaced. Long story short. Prime broke (poor quality), sent it to texas service center. 1/2 week later got it back. Service center screwed up the packing, FEDEX destroyed my tablet on delivery. Submitted and claim, 30 days later still waiting. Got tired of waiting, bought the infinity.
Asus seems to have learned their lessons from the Prime, so for me the Infinity works like what I expected the prime to be. Flawless.
If you're into customization and tinkering then this is the tablet for you. The only negative I have to say is Asus as a company they are very schizophrenic. They seem to have good customer support, their response time is good, they are polite and they want to do right by the customer but the end result is unsatisfactory. The Prime should have been recalled, but instead they released band aids to problems that only made things worst. But they tried to do good for the customer. Which is why I ended up buying another Asus product. I just hope I don't come to regret my decision later on.
There's not that many options right now anyways, if you want the most powerful tablet released you either get the ipad 3 or the infinity. My vote is on the infinity, just make sure you get insurance.

Yes its very sensitive. The digitizer on the Infinity is really good. Regarding the HandStylus, I don't see why it shouldn't work. It looks like a normal capacitive stylus with just a smaller tip. As far as the 3g version I don't believe its out on the market yet.

I use my Infinity for quite a bit of work. One thing I found is that I use the device docked with the keyboard more than I do as an actual tablet. When sitting at a table or even on the couch I'm able to bang out e-mail, XLS files or word docs with little or no effort. Even when not using the keyboard, just having it there gives a very stable stand to hold the device in a comfortable position. I'm not even considering a sleeve anymore to protect the device, since just folding the keyboard up will protect the screen. Honestly, I didn't think I would use it this way... figured they dock was going to be a novelty accessory. It has truly transformed (pun intended) this thing into something that is really productive. Not sure what kind of school work you will be using your tablet for, but this is something you might want to consider.
I own one and I think it's great.. I honestly can't think of a reason why you shouldn't get it.. In addition, there are plenty of stable OS that you can put on the tablet once you root it; plus, you have more options you can enact on the tablet, which wouldn't be possible on the iPad.

I second Garys opinion. My transformer has become my sole computing device at home, with my desktop being used as a file storage.
The keyboard dock is essential for school.
FWIW, I finally bought a gray Infinity after being without my OG Transformer since last AUG and tiring of the wait for a champagne unit. (Tried a Prime for about 36 hours -- it was such a POS that I returned it for a refund.) The gray Infinity has been in production long enough to work out assembly issues, if Asus plans to correct them at all.
I bought from Amazon, which has excellent customer service and return policies. I should receive the unit today. If there are build issues, I'll exchange no more than twice (which, not coincidentally, is the limit of Amazon's exchange policy). If I can't find a good unit among three, I'll just return it and wait for the Samsung P10 or a Surface tab.
Heck, if the P10 is as killer as specs suggest, I'll probably eBay the Infinity anyway. But I've done without a tablet for so long -- and the keyboard dock for my Droid Bionic is a poor substitute -- that I gotta try something.

While controlling you with an iron fist, by all means, get iPad 3.
If you are your own unique person who can decide what you want on your own, I strongly suggest a lil green robot.

I first tried the tf300 because it has the jb update but went to the infinity for its display. Once it gets jb you won't see lag any longer with it. I also tried the new ipad but returned it quickly, ios just too boring for me.

I am on the fence between the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the TF700T infinity. Any thoughts you all may have please share. The pen isn't a deal breaker for me, but the KB dock for the TF700 could be a real deal maker. I like the concept of a tablet book. Not to mention the hi-rez screen and some pretty impressive CPU/GPU specs.
I also have thoughts of waiting for the next product release cycle from both Asus and Samsung to see what the future may hold.

I could not be happier with my Infinity. Wait for what Asus makes to trump it and you'll be waiting till 2013. The device just came to the USA a few months ago, so it's still relatively new.

Make sure you physically use the Infinity before you dump that much money out, specially for the 64mb model. For that price and the dock you can buy a pretty powerful i7 laptop with a great screen. Regarding the Infinity the specs and numbers look great on paper but when you use it, it doesn't seem like the same thing as on paper. The JellyBean update did make it more smooth, but regular conventional browsing it jerks around when doing a simple scroll through a website. I've learned specially with technology that "specs" on paper do not necessarily coincide with the real world. If I could install Android on my wife's iPad I would LOVE to do that as I think th Apple hardware and quality is fantastic and proven.

bradslinux - As usual, the only person who can really decide is you. Because you'll always get answers that are all over the map here.
I was reading here before buying and thinking I might encounter issues such as those mentioned above and others people claimed to experience. But, it turns out my experience with the Infinity has been great and I'm not having such issues. (I've always prefered using XScope for my web browsing, 2nd place Dolphin, 3rd place Firefox, stock always is last place with me even with Chome. And it was like that with me even before I had the Infinity.) No physical laptop is as light as the Infinity with its dock and everything from web browsing to everything else has been a pleasure and a breeze to perform. Plus, you can't detach the screen from a laptop and the Infinity with just the screen is so light it's scary :laugh: .
You can even read in the threads about the JB update, there are people who are happy like me and others who are upset. Of course it's best to factory reset after the update, but even with that there are some happy afterwards and some who are sad. (If you like root, be sure to read about how to handle that before doing the JB update.)
Nobody can answer the question but you.
Every single Android device I buy, I see tons of complaints about, and every single time I get it I'm so much happier than the complaints. But that's how it has been for me. I know what I like and I like the Infinity .

I couldn't agree more as far as the positives.
Had my 32 gig gray Infin for over 2 months and have few complaints.
I'm not one of the "lucky" I am just a gadget consumer who bought a product that more than fulfilled it's ability.
If all the apps in the play store were written for tablets like this one I believe there would minimal *****ing about this thing.
I'm one of the buyers that thinks this tab may just be future enabled...

I'm spoiled with the ease with which I could root and unlock my Galaxy Nexus, and have been trying different radios, kernels and ROMs for months, with virtually no worries, no complexity. I'm new to the Infinity, so the complexities and uncertainty about NVflash (too late for me), unlocking and rooting once JB is installed, etc, is still a bit bewildering in comparison to the GNEx (I have lots of reading to do) -- and I'm finding it irritating so far. That said, even with stock JB installed, and Apex Pro and Beautiful Widgets (and HD widgets - still deciding which I like better on this device), I'm finding the TF700T to be a pretty amazing device.
I took it out "for a spin" today -- into NYC by train, on a couple of subways, and to a couple of meetings. I purposely did NOT carry a backpack or briefcase, took no laptop, no laptop brick, etc. The Infinity and dock, in a simple slipcase, was the only "business tool" I brought with me in addition to a phone today.
On the train into NY and even in the NYC subways (Verizon has picocells in the train tunnels), my Galaxy Nexus had a strong signal, so I flipped on it's Wi-Fi hotspot and my TF700T was connected the entire time I was traveling. Sweet!
At the business meetings, I opened up a few PowerPoint presentations I had copied on the device before my trip. The display was so bright and clear that the presentations looked great on the 10.1" screen -- and I was able to pass the tablet itself around for people to look at, navigate through slides, etc. Incredibly effective.
On the way home, I assembled notes from the day, marked up the presentations. I used it as a primary email client for the day. Amazingly (for me, coming from a Galaxy Nexus as a reference point), I used the device for several hours today, the display was amazing even in the brightest light- and I essentially did everything needed with a fraction of what I would normally carry for a business day in the New York. After many hours of use, I had barely dented the battery charge -- this is really pretty amazing. As bright as clear as the display is,it is apparently pretty energy efficient.
Anyway - between functionality, usability, elegance, battery life and sheer portability, this is clearly going to have a big impact on my days as a "road warrior".
Honestly - the only thing seriously giving me second thoughts is increasingly real sounding speculation about a Google / Samsung Galaxy Nexus 10.1 in the works, with 2560 x 1600 resolution (among other things). I have a strong feeling that I'll be wanting that new device when it comes out. But for now, the TF700T strikes me as the best device available in its class-- at least for my purposes.

Wow...as a commensurate gadgeteer myself I would just love something like this alleged Google / Samsung Galaxy Nexus 10.1 with 2560 x 1600 resolution.

I can't compare the two. There's plenty of information here and the net comparing the two for you to make judgement on what will suit your needs and desires.
If you do choose the Infinity, I would suggest going with the smaller 32GB version because the cost of the larger is not money well spent. Since the Infinity has the SDHC/XC slot, you can get a lot more storage for the money in that route. Heck, wait for a sale, and you can get a lot more. Personally, I went with the smaller unit. Picked up the Scandisc 64GB microSDXC card for $50. I hardly use any storage on the internal, so even the SC card is a bit of waste. Really, unless you're going to have hundreds of apps, thousands of songs, or a lot of video stored, you really don't need that much memory.
Also, if you want to save a few dollars, you can pick up the dock for the Prime, TF201. It's the same thing, just a different color. It's nice you want want the extra battery, SD card slot, or USB ports. If you just want the keyboard, I would suggest just getting a blue tooth keyboard since you can use it on more than one device. It's essentially what I did, but I already had a portable keyboard I used with my smartphone.
If you're really indecisive, see if someone lives near you and see if you can meet up and check out their device. Handling is always better than reading.

I was just thinking about that myself. Mixed feelings though. I love having the extra battery in the dock. Keyboard is nice, but I tend to prefer Swype, even on a tablet. (using it now).
Thanks everybody for the remarks and opinions. No longer on the fence, I just popped for the 64gb version w/dock kb and a nice leather case. It should be in my hands tomorrow with the case following behind early next week. The biggest deciding factor for me was the "Keyboard vs "S" Pen" arguement, the KB won it.
All the responses I received only go to further my appreciation of what the XDA community has to offer.
My greatest difficulty will be in NOT installing a custom ROM right out of the box. LOL

Hello, I want to get a new tablet (currently using and android'ed Touchpad still), and HD resolution is important to me. I've been keeping an eye on the TF700 and now have a chance to grab one for about $345 new. But I know some newer HD tablets were announced at CES and are on the horizon for some time (but I don't think pricing has been announced). At this point should I just hold off to see what is coming, or at that price am I safe to grab the TF700 and be happy for a while to come.
My primary uses will be reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movies.

6 months ago I would have said buy but today I would wait. The lag issue is a pia (at least if you stick with stock rom) and there are some new hd tablets comming out in the next 3-6 months. The only thing i don't know is if they will have sd slots (which is a must for me but appears to be a nono to google).

Thank you for response, I have no issue modding to a different rom, I've done it on other tablets / phones before (heck I'm using a touchpad modded from webOS to android now anyways). But if modding it doesn't help much then that is a concern.
My other concern was the newer tablets will be priced again in the 400-500 range, or the lower priced HD tablets will have specs worse than the transformer already has.

My honest opinion, it's very hard to find a FULLY LOADED TABLET like tf700 with the highest resolution screen. If you willing to unlock to use custom rom. I would say YES 100%.

Well today there are two alternatives; the acer and nexus 10. The acer is not a bad tablet but it runs a bit warmer and I think it has shorter battery life ( you should check reviews; it's been a while since i've read them). The nexus 10 biggest con is no sd slot but the recent mobiltech - http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tablets/Google-Nexus-10.htm - was over the top positive if you don't need an that sd slot.

I'm not unhappy I have the tf700 but the lag thing is a major headache when updating or browsing a lot of web pages and given the price point of the tablet it is a bit downer.

Anyways I'll probably stick with it another year and then pick up a 13inch ultra-book (sub 3lb) with 1080p screen.

I think you should wait ! I own the tf700 and I'm not pleased with it mostly because of the lag and random reboots. Sony announced an HD tablet that seems to be a good one. Anyway you should wait until MWC in Barcelona at the end of next month before you make up your mind.

But Sony announces great things and releases them 6 months after everyone else. That's why their phone sales are in the toilet. They just came out with a new one, nice phone, but it is about the same as a one x, which came out about 9 months ago. I will also admit the lag issue, but still the best one out there, the screen is amazing.
Arguments for the TF700:
- Screen! 1920*1200.
- Screen. 700 nits brightness and great contrast. Almost twice as bright as an iPad 3.
- Keyboard dock. With additional battery and USB.
- microSD card slot, and full size SD card slot in the dock.
- It looks great.
Arguments against the TF700:
- Lag. Slow internal eMMC. (can be worked around with custom ROMs, but not fully solved.)
- Unlocking to install custom ROMs voids your warranty!
- Unlocking is a lottery, and you still can't replace the bootloader on an unlocked device. (the unlocking tool simply does not work for some people and they get no help from Asus.)
- Somewhat unstable, occasional random reboots, hangs with white screen.
- Build quality issues - people report the docking mechanism breaking, light bleed, screen getting loose.
- Only 1 GB RAM and old (for 2013) Tegra 3 SoC.
- Some software that works on other tablets is not available for the TF700.
- Loudspeaker isn't great.

For the OP's needs "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie", the TF700T is more than suitable.
No doubt the N10 has higher performance, but at the cost of far worse battery life. And you don't really need an N10 for "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie". I guess you don't "need" a TF700T for that either. Lower ranking devices could fit that bill just fine.
But considering the OP has purchased aTF700T, I think they'll enjoy it.

Exactly, the N10 is nice and all, but I couldn't live without my MicroSD card, the OP will enjoy it a lot, the 1080p screen look brilliant with movies and text, and you can store tons of movies on a microsd
I just got my Infinity 64GB about 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I have noticed a bit of lag on the web, but it's not horrible. I'm sure a fix will eventually come out for it. I don't see it staying that way forever. I'd probably like to eventually root it, but I get totally confused when reading the instructions on how to. I've only rooted my HTC Thunderbolt and that was a pretty in depth task.
I have noticed the little black line thing here and there but it's not too bad either. I figure a fix will come out for that as well.
I will say with 64GB I was able to load 13 High Quality (about 3 - 6gb each) movies on this thing and it works great! Think I might try knocking the quality down of the movie to a smaller file size so I can load a lot more on here. Just haven't found a ripper/compressor that I like that can create ripped movies without a lot of artifacting...
I'd say the most bothersome thing I've noticed with this tablet is the Light Bleed... however it's only noticed during a completely black screen. It's always got the factory warranty, plus I purchased a 3 year Square Trade warranty along with it so I'm good until 2016 with this bad boy.

Do it if you are comfortable unlocking, flashing trwp, and installing Clean ROM. After doing so my tab is smoother than ipad4 at my work. New tablets may be coming out but i doubt they have a comprehensive KB dock as good as this one. Screen is better than retina display and other HD tableys bc of IPS+, screen brightness is as important as res due to glare issues, IPS+ is great for combatting this, and i have yet to see another device with super IPS+. The screen goes to 600 nits of brightness rather than 300-350, which is the highest ive ever seen in any tablet or laptop. The range of brightness settings is also badass, you can go to incresibly low to incredibly high, which is great but often unmentioned.
I have actually replaced my laptop and desktop with tf700. Since buying and flashing CROMI i have never touched my laptop/desktop. My workflow is better on this bc of gesture/KB dock combination. I couldnt be happier.
Plus the tf700 is a sexy fckin beast, nothing else out there looks as badass. The mfctring quality is sick. I have dropped mine from around 5 ft off the ground onto concrete on pretty much every edge of this device and it is still working as well as when i bought it. If you don't need the keyboard dock. Then jump on the Nexus 10. But if you are planning to use the tf700 and rooting with a flashing rom. Pull the trigger. Tf700 rooted is a beast of a tablet. And just provides so much functionality with the dock. I mean extra battery, sd slots, usb slots. The full package.
Its never to late to RETURN IT! And you will find there are now some that have unlocked it had to send it back and Asus will not fix it even though it was a hard ware problem. I bought the tf700 about 2 weeks ago from best buy using the 50$ coupon that best buy messed up on. I actually bought it for 419 w/ tax going up to 450 which also includes the dock. Is this a good price for this? Well I have 2 weeks left for a full refund and I'm still debating if I should get a refund and wait for tegra 4 tablets or just keep it. There is slight flex on the screen which makes a clicking noise when I press on it but it doesn't really bother me. At first I was looking into ultrabooks but I gave tablet a try. Besides it's hard to find i5 ultrabooks for under 500. Help me decide!!

That is a good price IMO.
I'd say this is a factor of your budget and how much you use your tablet. I got the first Android tablet, a Motorola Xoom, on launch day. I had it for a few months and used it a lot then decided to sell it prematurely in order to wait for the next best thing which in my eyes was an HD screen. Well I ended up having to wait almost a year before I got my next tablet, a TF700. That entire year I was kicking myself for not holding on to the Xoom until I actually had another tablet in my possession.
So I guess you have to ask yourself how important to you is having a tablet? At that price I'm guessing you could probably sell it for a ~$100 loss a few months down the road. Who knows though the next generation of tablets might take longer to come out, like the delay we had on the 1080P tablets. With that in mind, if I were you, I'd keep it!
$450.00 for tab and dock?
I'd say that's a good deal.
If the click bugs you trade that in for one that doesn't click.
Just picked up a TF700 myself and I was literally asking myself the same question. I've got a little less than 60 days to return this to BBY if another tab is announced for release soon.
I guess, there are a few things to consider.
1) Is the better performance/battery life of the new device going to be significant? If they jack up the resolution like the N10, it will probably be closer to par with the TF700.
2) Will a new tablet have any hardware issues (e.g. TF-Prime GPS & Wifi problems)? The TF700 is a mature product and it's limitations are well outlined. If you buy a TF700 now, you know exactly what you are going to get.
3) What new features will be on this Tab, and are they worth waiting for? TF700 has SDXC, mini HDMI, a dock with full USB, Full HD, etc. It's a good feature set. TF700 is a bit low on ram with only 1GB, I'd rather have 2GB. It's missing an integrated LTE modem that is said to be in T4, but TBH, I would always buy the wifi version anyway. Better battery life, I wouldn't pay for the extra data plan, and my phone is now tethering fine (thanks TrevE). N10 like resolution looks impressive on paper, but not so in person. I have good eyesight, and the difference isn't noticeable. It's an advertising point over the ipad. Google needs to stop chasing Apple and build more hardware features into their tablets that Apple didn't already do a year ago, but I digress.
4) Are there any applications you cannot run on the TF700 that a new tab would fix? I picked u the TF700 because my Touchpad (running CM9) keeps crashing skype; which I use daily. I run a somewhat recent nightly, and since the Camera fix (thanks for that Dorregaray) being able to use skype at all is awesome. However, having to reboot the tablet 6 times in a night and constantly mucking up the conversation is real pain. Since using the TF700, I haven't had one hiccup in skype. That is worth a lot to me, but a newer tab won't make it better.
Anyway, those are the things I've been mulling over. I will need to see what the new Transformer will look like before I make any kind of decision.
Edit: FWIW, I paid $468 for the tab & a 32GB micro sdxc card. I think you got the better deal.
Have they given a release date for any Tegra4 device? I thought one was shown at the last electronics show but it was still a development model and didn't mention anything about release times or price. You could be waiting awhile and in meantime if you keep the TF700 start stashing away some money monthly for the next wave of tablets. That could help on any loss you take or cover the difference to a model with more storage.

1 - I don't think anyone can tell what the performance and battery life will be like right now. New devices and cpu's are marketed as more performance while reducing energy needs but the tech community needs products to test before accepting what is said as fact. Are Tegra4 chps supposed to run at the same power that today's Tegra3 chips do but have the better performance? That is a performance improvement while reducing the power needed if they were to make a Tegra3 to equal that performance. Someone may have a better answer regarding power saving but remember a bumped up screen size will probably draw more power anyway.
2 - Again probably hard to answer. Until the product hits the market we really won't know how it performs and what problems it may or may not have. It is a risk you take by buying the next and greatest device. Prime was the next and greatest device and we know how that turned out. We can only hope they get the message after 3 devices that they need better I/O components.
4 - As far as applications I think many people have issue with games that are released or already out and "not supported" by our device. It will take some time once a new device comes out for companies to tweak the code or whatever they do to have the games run on the device. That is done on their whim. Why some haven't not done now on the TF700 (Gameloft and EA) is a question I don't think anyone truly knows. Some guess it's screen resolution and they don't want to change the code to render the graphics properly for our device.
But really you can wait and wait and still not be satisfied because something else is a few months away. This technology is moving fast.

Well, I had really wanted a "Wayne" (Tegra 4) device, and was waiting for that to launch to replace/augment the touchpad. The marketing slides showing kepler tech integrated into the SoC is actually a little bit exicting to me. However, I took advantage of a time limited offer to get the TFI at a reduced price. I use google docs for invoicing clients, and the Touchpad wasn't handling that well enough for me to do it on site. I found myself just waiting to get home to do it & emailing an invoice back. The TFI with the keyboard dock provides an excellent solution, and I had considered getting an ultra book for this purpose, but at about half the price of the ultrabook I was looking at, while fulfilling essentially the same purpose, having the same size profile, and better battery life, well it seemed like the better bargain.
That said, if I could get my hands on a next gen transformer within the next 60 days, I'd likely trade this in, in a heart beat.
My opinion the TF700T is viable for a while longer.
Glad the FHD tabs didn't shoot of into a numbers game as quick as I thought they would.
All I can say is after the "lobotomy" lol...my tablet has been a satisfying adventure.
It's smooth no jitters, games well (light gaming), plays my Xfinity downloads without a hitch, wifi connects stays connected, gps is quick,
browser is hanging in there...etc.
Just for a bit of comparison:
I've side by sided the tablet with my 2 year old HP AMD A6 notebook, and for what it is the tab has about the same amount of annoyance that a Win7 notebook has.
Not comparing Windows to Android just noting all devices big and small can of course suffer glitchiness.
Once the system settles in and with a little restraint as far as collecting\installing poorly written apps the Infinity remains a buy at least for me.
Hopefully when the newer tabs start popping perhaps some of us hold-outs will benefit from a much better selection of HD tablet applications.

How did you get the 60 day refund period? On my best buy receipt it states 30 days hassle free returns. Also it's a little weird that my tf700 freezes and randomly reboots. It doesn't do it frequently but once in awhile it does that.....very weird. This is actually my second tablet because the first one had slight flex but the current one actually makes a small clicking noise too. Honestly it doens't really bother me but ASus def needs to work on their quality control
Personally, waiting for the next tablet from ASUS (I assume you want a Transformer tablet) will be a very painful experience. Our tf700 was announced at CES 2012 (in January 2012), but only became available for sale at least 4 months later (depend on your location). Given the fact that ASUS has not announced any successor to our Infinity yet, I am inclined to believe if there is a Tegra 4 tablet from ASUS, it will only be available to us on the second half of the year. I have been waiting for the Transformer Book for many months but it is still not available. To me, waiting for something that is not even announced yet is a waste of time and effort.
I would strongly reccomend this tab to anyone who needs something with similar functionality to a netbook or ultrabook but I am looking forward to see what will come next. I would love to see something with a little more power hit the same nitch and with about the same price point... I'm actually waiting on the razer edge tablet to see what it turns into. anyways, I plan on hanging on to my TF700 even if I do get an ultrabook or the edge.

Premier Silver. Drop enough cash at best buy and you get side benefits, like a doubled return period. Most of the the other benefits are less useful. I don't bother with the complimentary Geek Squad services, for example. Even if I wanted or needed their services (I don't), I still wouldn't use it. Mostly, that's just an opportunity for them to come into your home and look for things they can sell you.
Honestly. ...maybe a extra gig of ram would make this tablet perfect for me. The resolution is ideal for me and the speed is great (running CleanRom) and it does what I hope to get from it. And I use my note 2 for the extra stuff (multi window, nfc sharing etc). And to top that, the mobile giants still have not made 100% use of the quad core as it is and until then, asus infinity is a keeper.

Tegra 4 isn't shipping until QTR 3 2013. Given that time frame, I'm reasonably happy with my purchase. If the SoC isn't even shipping until then, you won't see devices until QTR 4, and that's nearly a year away. No doubt there will be better performers from Qualcomm sooner than that, but even so, I'm happy with the device I have for now.
searched but haven't even found rumors on a successor - had the TFPrime before and since it got nicked I am waiting for sth new to play with.
Have started considering the Samsung Tab Plus (whenever announced) given the higher res. Still seems that the TF700 has enough muscles and the add keyboard (+battery) is clearly a plus...
Anyhow - have there been any news on the TF700 successor that I missed

I have to agree about the extra gig of ram. But in response to the OP's question, yes that is a very good price. You could always dualboot it with rabbits' linux so as to gain some of the functionality that you would get with an ultrabook. The infinity will not become redundant for a while yet in my opinion so I say go for it.
For tablet with awesome dock integration the tf700 cant be beat. You also got a great deal on both. As far at Tegra 4 devices in particular Asus ones, no one knows yet when they will actually release one so you will have to play the waiting game. Vizio is the only one I know of that is coming out with one but not sold in the U.S. and doesn't have a keyboard dock option.
As someone mentioned the tf700 is a good laptop or netbook replacement. So if you're not going to play high graphic games on it like gameloft games then its a good tablet. But I do recommend you unlock and install custom rom on it as it lags quite a bit in stock form.

Unless the device has a battery-powered dock, I'd suspect battery life is going to be on par at best -- expect it to be worse. This may not apply if the new device carries one of those funky new battery design which last for a week and are charged in 10 minutes, but those will only get on the market in about two years, they reckon.

Obviously true, and very significant remark. Any device will have its issues, and given the fact that the TF201 suffered from some of these as well, I'd not expect the next Transformer to be faultless either. :S

And the N10 has both QA and availability issues, for example.
Following your digression for a bit: Apple had already lost the innovation game in the tablet and smartphone worlds a few years ago. All they have done is increase screen size, and (sometimes) resolution.

If anything, the older device will probably support more apps altogether -- if you have experienced the transitions from Froyo to Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean, you have noticed that we lost a lot of apps along the way that were pretty good in themselves, but just weren't given the TLC to update them to function on the new version. Backward compatibility is less of an issue when the programmer takes it into account when developing his/her app, but too often an app is just hacked together and subsequently, essentially, abandoned.[/QUOTE]
