Calls and data - Captivate General

This phone is driving me nuts.
I have been missing lots of calls and recently
tracked it down to when my data is running it will send all my calls
to voice mail.
All other phones I've own will cut data and accept the call.
Is there a settings I'm missing or is this how the captivate work?

Does the captivate have DDTM/DOTM? If so is there a way to turn it off?

Anyone?

While on EDGE, you can only do voice OR data at any given moment. On W-CDMA (3g), you can do BOTH voice and data simultaneously.
If you find your experience differing from that behavior, there is probably something wrong with your current ROM/Radio/Kernel.

I understand That I can only do one at a time on EDGE, which is fine but shouldn't voice come first? The data should get cut so the phone can be use as a phone IMO.
I have stock ROM 2.1-update1 JF6
kernel2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Is there a certain ROM/Radio/Kernel I should be looking for?
I have had much "cheaper" phone cut data for voice calls. It's my conclusion that Android is not 2G friendly as I've read other
Android devices with similar problems. Some can be solved with DDTM turned off. No such luck with the Capti.

UMA Wifi Calling

I hooked up my new MT4G to wifi and it prompted and notified me of wi-fi calling.

Technically it's not uma because it doesn't hand off to.and from the tower like blackberry... But I'm equally excited.. Tested and confirmed on mine as well

Sorry for the wrong sub forum post. OOPS I forgot where I was.
I was unsure of the cellular handoff. Has it been confirmed that it doesn't hand off?

Please stop calling this UMA. It's not the same thing at all.
Wi-fi calling is a clever way to push people on to their own wifi infrastructure. Rather than continue to use cell tower bandwidth, you use your own broadband connection for both data and voice traffic. The best part (for them) is you still use your minutes.
Most people never bother setting up wifi on their phone, because they simply don't have to. The mobile network is available 24x7, and wifi eats battery life. Now, get to charge you *and* get you off their network at the same time.
Brilliant strategy, but I'll pass - I'm not paying T-Mobile to use my own bandwidth.
You would if you were somewhere you didn't have coverage. Or even better if you were out of the country and wanted to call back to a US number and only use your normal minutes and not pay for international roaming.

The app works great for me with crappy service in my house been waiting for it. Once you get close to the wifi range limit u get a pop-up warning you your call will be lost.

The only problem I had was whsn walking away from work or my house it would drop the call vs the hand off like the blackberrys uma calling feature.
I also think we are all aware this is not a true uma. I will try to edit my op to correct.

This is a great feature, i'm just confused why they wouldn't build it to allow it to seamlessly handoff to cell towers.
That would b a hardware requirement and raise the cost.

I used WiFi overseas for calling on my BB, and TMo came after me with a bunch of international calling minutes anyway. So unless they have changed their policy - be careful.

Web browsing while on talking on the phone...why not possible?

Can someone tell me why is not possible or whether it is possible to browse the web while talking on the phone with Android.

That's limitations on Verizon's network, not the Iphone. There isn't a whole lot of phones on Verizon you can talk and surf the web at the same time.
I can on my desire, but tend to drop my coffee as I'm driving my car though.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
MOD EDIT: Relax. No need to get angry.
It's pretty bad. I know that much. I had an original Droid before on Verizon, but I got tired of paying so much for so little.
Got ears in your mouth now?
Awesome.

That's a different story. You're not using your mobile network for data at that time, just for calling.
CDMA doesn't allow the use of data and voice at the same time. They use CDMA for calls and EV-DO for data.
AT&T and TMobile are the able to because they use GSM vs. Sprint and Verizon's CDMA. It has nothing to do with the phones.
I do it all the time. On my RootedHTCDesireZ

LOL way to funny
As stated above, the inability to use both voice and data at the same time is a limitation of a CDMA network (Verizon). It has nothing to do with the phone. Because of this, if you want to do voice and data at the same time, the only way of doing so, is via WiFi, so that your "data" can be done through WiFi as opposed to the carrier network.
But honestly, how often do you really need both at the same time? I consider myself to be a fairly heavy power user on my phone, and still rarely run into a situation where I need both at the same time.
Luckily for you though, Verizon's 4G (LTE) does have the ability to do voice and data at the same time.

Bingo. "4G" (LTE and WiMax, as well as HSPA+) will allow you to do it for. Also, being on Wifi will let you do it.
But I mean, I don't understand why people want to do both at the same time anyways.

I would have thought the same a few weeks ago but the other day I was calling a friend (I was on speaker) and needed to search on the web something that we were talking about. Impossible. That's how I understood that it could be useful to be able to do the two things at the same time

3g cdma networks can not do voice & data simultaneously. if you have wifi on and are on a call/the phone, then you can(i can). if you have a 4g connection and are on a call/the phone, you can(i can)

does the voice use LTE or just data?

Never bothered to look this up and can't find any info on AT&T ...

Lte is just for data. 2g/3g is data and voice.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
At some point when ATT has migrated all of their coverage to LTE capability the network will switch to LTE for voice. Neither ATT or Verizon use LTE for voice calls yet.
Likely within a decade they will turn off their traditional TDMA based GSM voice network altogether and everything will be on their LTE spectrum.

I'm wondering if they'll throttle LTE during phone calls as well. Hmmmmm
pretty sure they only use gsm for calls, as people without data plans that have smartphones (dont know why they do that ) still make calls and text, just cant access teh interwebz

No you didn't get it. Even without LTE they slow down any connection when on a phone call to save bandwidth. You can be getting 6 mbps down and then make a phone call and barely hit one and the upload is like 0.00mbps.
Test it out. Immsuremit will be like that once LTE is voice enabled.

The current deployments of LTE are based on the LTE Release 8 with LTE used for data and 3GPP/3GPP2 (i.e. GSM/UMTS/CDMA/EVDO) for voice.
This will all change when the carriers move to the VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which is most likely a few years away.

Yes, from what I understand, there is no standard yet for Voice over LTE, the various stakeholders are still working this out, and its still a long ways away.
So for the present time (and near future), LTE is data only (and no voice) on all carriers.

I wasn't agreeing or disagreeing. I was stating something entirely different from the OP.
Its not widely known that AT&T throttles all data speeds during calls and I was being sarcastic by adding that once you can do LTE over voice, they'll throttle that too during calls only.
Run a speedtest next time your on the phone and you'll see. Doesn't matter what data plan you have, they throttle all data speeds during calls.

Agreed, I told At&t that i wanted to cancel my service because Im paying for hotspot and its shif during calls. I was never told this before signing up for service. Im upset because hspa+ is enough for my needs and will work during calls but they had to go and throttle the service!

The standard is pretty clear.
You have 3 options for voice under LTE (as of Rel8):
VoLTE - IMS VoIP using AMR
CS (circuit switched) Fallback - basically have the phone camp in the LTE network, and fallback to 3GPP/3GPP2 only in the case of voice calls
SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE) - the scenario I already described and launched with most NA carriers
The reason for the delay in VoLTE deployment is the difficulty (and cost) in implementation. VZW, AT&T, etc. would probably want to recoup investments in the 3G network already in place before they spend more for VoLTE. At some point in the future, recovering air spectrum from the 3G band is going to be a higher priority than re-using the deployed 3G network, and that's when we'll see more VoLTE movement.

Still receiving texts with mobile data off?

Just curious, is this normal? I had mobile data off my entire trip to work but I was still sending/receiving texts perfectly fine. I am running synergy 1.6. If this is the case, I may as well leave mobile data off as I only send the occasional text at work and when I need 4g just toggle it on.
Just figured id ask. Thanks!

As stated above mine, you don't need data to send texts. If I remember correctly sms piggybacks on tiny little bit of the voice connection. I usually just throw my phone into airplane mode when I don't want to be interrupted

Ah, makes sense...I found it odd because this was not the case on my droid X, if I had no 3G or 1x data, my texts could not be sent (may have just been bad luck, even when I had a couple bars). This is why I found it so strange. Thanks for your answers guys!
At 1x your texts will travel like molasses
At 3g your texts will travel at average speed
At 4GLTE your texts will fly screaming to/from your phone.
Glad i helped.

LTE not sticking..

Has anyone notice when you make a call, it switches from LTE to H or drops data even when receiving?? I've noticed it for a week now.. Even on a replacement phone. Thanks.

LTE is NOT a voice protocol. Your phone MUST switch out of LTE when receiving or placing a voice call. LTE is for data only.
There are some exceptions, but afaik, most carriers simply switch you out of LTE to place a voice call. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_(telecommunication)#Voice_calls
