Still receiving texts with mobile data off? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Just curious, is this normal? I had mobile data off my entire trip to work but I was still sending/receiving texts perfectly fine. I am running synergy 1.6. If this is the case, I may as well leave mobile data off as I only send the occasional text at work and when I need 4g just toggle it on.
Just figured id ask. Thanks!

You don't need data to send texts. Think about all the times you sent text before you had a smartphone... crazy huh?

As stated above mine, you don't need data to send texts. If I remember correctly sms piggybacks on tiny little bit of the voice connection. I usually just throw my phone into airplane mode when I don't want to be interrupted

Ah, makes sense...I found it odd because this was not the case on my droid X, if I had no 3G or 1x data, my texts could not be sent (may have just been bad luck, even when I had a couple bars). This is why I found it so strange. Thanks for your answers guys!

At 1x your texts will travel like molasses
At 3g your texts will travel at average speed
At 4GLTE your texts will fly screaming to/from your phone.
Glad i helped.

Text to Landline glitch? Just texting glitch? (D2.1)

So while running Damage 2.1 I got a couple of weird things happening.
#1. When I got the voicemail notifications (these may stop, I changed the settings, not sure if that was enough or if I need YouMail), it sent me like 3 texts/notification
#2. I saw somebody mentioning text-landline, so I tested it. I got ~7 notifications telling me I texted a landline, and then ~4 notifications telling me it worked.
Using Handcent too...but the messages are duplicated in stock app as well.
I think the text-to-landline thing is a general sprint bug.
My girlfriend and I have a friend that whenever either one of us text her we get the text-to-landline thing. Other people can text her just fine even other people on the sprint network.
There is nothing simialar at all about my GF's and my accounts. We each have our own sprint account. I have a hero and the plan that comes with it. She has some old phone she has been using for years and gets a very very good rate on it. (30/month SERO plan).
Why both of us when texting this particular friend get a text-to-landline mess is a mystery to me.

Do you just get one notification telling you it sent it to a landline? I sent it to an actual landline, it's just that I sent one message and got a ton of texts about it. I'm annoyed more about the multiple texts, sorry if I wasn't clear. Just seems like Sprint is sending the same system message a bunch of times, or something is wrong.
yea sorry. I should have read your post better. I don't get multiple notifications. Just one. I am texting to a cell phone though and my friend gets a voice mail from text-to-landline instead of the text I sent.

I know some people's cells still come up as landline, I hope those don't count against my free mobile-mobile minutes...

Anyone else using Sprint. Sounds like it used to be a landline. And if only you two have Sprint it would make sense since they use text to landline

Calls and data

This phone is driving me nuts.
I have been missing lots of calls and recently
tracked it down to when my data is running it will send all my calls
to voice mail.
All other phones I've own will cut data and accept the call.
Is there a settings I'm missing or is this how the captivate work?
Does the captivate have DDTM/DOTM? If so is there a way to turn it off?
Anyone?

While on EDGE, you can only do voice OR data at any given moment. On W-CDMA (3g), you can do BOTH voice and data simultaneously.
If you find your experience differing from that behavior, there is probably something wrong with your current ROM/Radio/Kernel.

I understand That I can only do one at a time on EDGE, which is fine but shouldn't voice come first? The data should get cut so the phone can be use as a phone IMO.
I have stock ROM 2.1-update1 JF6
kernel2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Is there a certain ROM/Radio/Kernel I should be looking for?
I have had much "cheaper" phone cut data for voice calls. It's my conclusion that Android is not 2G friendly as I've read other
Android devices with similar problems. Some can be solved with DDTM turned off. No such luck with the Capti.

How to make sure I don't get an outrageous bill overseas

Hi guys,
Just wondering - going overseas for 3 days and going to bring my phone with me. How do I ensure that all data transfers will NOT happen therefore not leaving me with a large bill when I get back?
Thanks,
Airplane mode

Hi,
Go to settings>wireless& networks>mobile networks.
Make sure data roaming is NOT ticked.
Then it will not connect abroad.

Turn off data roaming. Also if you want to make calls without getting roaming charges, use wifi calling at your hotel's wifi.
By default, HTC disables data roaming so you don't need to worry. Always worth checking, though

[Q] Reception Problems

okay guys so I just switched over from the Galaxy S to the S2, Skyrocket LTE
I had full reception at my house with the Captivate....Now, with the skyrocket I still have full reception....but with a catch
I'll have full service...then all of the sudden it will drop to 1 bar and be unable to send any texts. (Message not sent error). Then, like 45 seconds later it will turn back up to 5 bars and ill get texts.
the time that its off and on seems to be consistently repeating and switching back and forth between 45 second intervals. Also, sometimes ill get all my texts together (9 unread) out of nowhere with time stamps from 5-12 minutes ago.
I'm running STOCK everything:
Android version 2.3.5
Baseband: I727UCKJ2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
I wanna root my phone but I wanna make suree there isnt a problem with it.
I think its also important to note that this problem is ONLY in my house and around my house. not anywhere else.
Any ideas on what could be causing this, or any solutions? anyone else have the same problem?
I'd recommend reporting your thread via the upper right link to have this moved, you got it posted in the wrong phone section. I'd try to take a stab at helping ya but honestly it would just be a guess...
Thread moved from AT&T Galaxy S II forums to the Skyrocket Q&A forum...
anyone have any idea?

There have been some problems reported on the LTE network, but the biggest problem was/is.. people not being able to make calls when the network mode was set to lte auto. Depending on where you are, you might want to check the coverage map for your location... and call your carrier.

Thank you, do you have any links regarding the problems reported? I'm in LA, I dont think we have LTE here yet. Also the problems seem to happen only at my house, not even like 1 block down. I know I had full coverage here with no problems on my Captivate. It's just this phone, reception drops to 1 bar, then 5 .... like every 10 seconds, keeps going up and down, I gotta time when to send my texts so they go through lol.
I want to say lte is in testing for la. That could definitely cause issues if they are messing with the towers. The same thing happened to me while we were in Vegas...a few days later everything worked ...including LTE which Vegas previously did not have. Its also worth checking to make sure ATT has u on an LTE plan. Its been documented that if they have not done that it can cause some issues

the captivate is not a 4g or Lte phone...the phone is not trying to switch between 3g to 4g...i think thats the problem with your SII..trying to change from H+ to Lte without succes in an area doesnt have Lte
The only links that I have seen, are for rogers here in Canada.. don't know if that would be of any help to you? While my signal strength is all over the map, I have never had any problems making or receiving calls.

I went ahead and called. It seems the problem is, as everyone suspected, the phone trying to switch from H+ to LTE. the 4G logo seems to change from 4G to 4G (LTE) when it drops reception. Will rooting / roming help stop this? Are there any ways of turning off LTE until they get it fully working?
With regards to the quote above, I currently have Unlimited Data since i got grandfathered in. The guy at the ATT store told me I dont have to change my data plan and I'll keep my unlimited (so i did that). He gave me a new sim which he said "will help give you better reception". Will I still have issues because i dont have the new data plans? I want to keep my unlimited data.
**EDIT**
Just checked on ATTs website and I have "LTE UNL SMT VVMT" data plan.
Thanks in advance for all the feedback guys!
Also, I think its important to note that even if I connect to WiFi, the problem is still there, reception drops and goes up consistently. I've missed countless phone calls and have had to resend a vast amount of texts. I get all my texts together every 4-6 minutes. PLEASE help =/
Did you ever get this resolved. I have the same problem at my house, calls drop frequently and data seems to be not available at times.
Y did u resurrect this thread lol, a new post might have been better. None the less, try the telus KJ3 radio if u don't have LTE in your area, it has really good voice quality, and consistent data rates. If u do have LTE use the new UCLA3 one

Poll: What is your texting plan/service?

I want to switch to AT&T for the One X soon and am looking for ways to reduce my bill. I don't want to pay $20/mo for texting so using Google Voice is a good idea for that. I initially wanted to port my number to GV so that I wouldn't have to give people a new number, but after some testing I feel like the voice lag in calls through GV is a little too significant to use it for all my calls, so now I'm considering porting my number to AT&T like normal and using my separate GV number for texts.
I'd like to know what you guys do and how it works out for you.
Thanks.
Just keep in mind that GV texting doesn't support short codes, nor MMS (although Google said it is coming).
I'd switch to google voice full time if it had two features that it's currently missing. 1. Obviously mms. 2. Threaded group SMS (which I found out the One X doesnt support either)! I really miss group SMS coming from the iPhone as that's how I communicated with a bunch of my friends and colleagues.
Telling people to just email me is definitely worth the $20 savings...

Not even sure what this means.
I am in the same boat and I had tried to use Google Voice. Does not work simply because the lack of a dedicated SMS agent.

Google+ messenger. The stand alone messaging client for Google+.
I've been debating getting a new number through Google Voice and switching to that. Cutting the unlimited texting from my plan would sure be nice. I don't make more than 10-20 minutes in calls most months, so the latency issue is not major for me. I suspect it's related to the inherent latency on the 3G/HSPA network. I think this is one of the areas where LTE is supposed to be a major improvement over HSPA+. Has anybody tried GV over 3G and wifi/LTE. If so, was it any better?

Yea but isn't that like using Facebook messenger or whatsapp? It's not an SMS replacement unless everyone you text actually has it installed.
Pretty much. I'm not really sure how that works out as a replacement for a texting brand. Maybe they will elaborate.
I use Google Voice and save my money, not work the 20 bucks for MMS and short code. I fill in the blanks of those with twitter/facebook etc etc.
I have unlimited via a family unlimited plan.
EDIT: Can you use GV without a SIM? Like I have an account set up but I can't send SMS or Make calls on the One X at all. Am I doing something wrong or does it just not work that way?
I chose the unlimited text because that gives you unlimited mobile to mobile calls, any carrier.. That allowed me to drop down from unlimited minutes to 450 minutes with rollover. I'll never talk 450 minutes to a landline during peak i dont think. I dont know anybody with a landline, all mobile. That dropped the Minutes from $69 to $39. I', going to give it a try...We'll see

Yeah, I'm used to having unlimited mobile to mobile on Sprint, but I think I can get by without it and still only 450 minutes. A lot of calls happen on nights and weekends, and then I can take advantage of the rollover (not sure how long those minutes last before expiring).

You should be able to SMS through GV by just being on WiFi I think, but you won't be able to make calls without the SIM since it goes over the cell network and uses minutes like normal. However, if you use something like GrooVe IP, you should be able to make calls with just WiFi.
Unlimited text family plan for $20 FTW!
