does the voice use LTE or just data? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Never bothered to look this up and can't find any info on AT&T ...

Lte is just for data. 2g/3g is data and voice.

At some point when ATT has migrated all of their coverage to LTE capability the network will switch to LTE for voice. Neither ATT or Verizon use LTE for voice calls yet.
Likely within a decade they will turn off their traditional TDMA based GSM voice network altogether and everything will be on their LTE spectrum.

I'm wondering if they'll throttle LTE during phone calls as well. Hmmmmm

pretty sure they only use gsm for calls, as people without data plans that have smartphones (dont know why they do that ) still make calls and text, just cant access teh interwebz

No you didn't get it. Even without LTE they slow down any connection when on a phone call to save bandwidth. You can be getting 6 mbps down and then make a phone call and barely hit one and the upload is like 0.00mbps.
Test it out. Immsuremit will be like that once LTE is voice enabled.

The current deployments of LTE are based on the LTE Release 8 with LTE used for data and 3GPP/3GPP2 (i.e. GSM/UMTS/CDMA/EVDO) for voice.
This will all change when the carriers move to the VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which is most likely a few years away.

Yes, from what I understand, there is no standard yet for Voice over LTE, the various stakeholders are still working this out, and its still a long ways away.
So for the present time (and near future), LTE is data only (and no voice) on all carriers.

I wasn't agreeing or disagreeing. I was stating something entirely different from the OP.
Its not widely known that AT&T throttles all data speeds during calls and I was being sarcastic by adding that once you can do LTE over voice, they'll throttle that too during calls only.
Run a speedtest next time your on the phone and you'll see. Doesn't matter what data plan you have, they throttle all data speeds during calls.

Agreed, I told At&t that i wanted to cancel my service because Im paying for hotspot and its shif during calls. I was never told this before signing up for service. Im upset because hspa+ is enough for my needs and will work during calls but they had to go and throttle the service!

The standard is pretty clear.
You have 3 options for voice under LTE (as of Rel8):
VoLTE - IMS VoIP using AMR
CS (circuit switched) Fallback - basically have the phone camp in the LTE network, and fallback to 3GPP/3GPP2 only in the case of voice calls
SVLTE (Simultaneous Voice and LTE) - the scenario I already described and launched with most NA carriers
The reason for the delay in VoLTE deployment is the difficulty (and cost) in implementation. VZW, AT&T, etc. would probably want to recoup investments in the 3G network already in place before they spend more for VoLTE. At some point in the future, recovering air spectrum from the 3G band is going to be a higher priority than re-using the deployed 3G network, and that's when we'll see more VoLTE movement.

Browse while on phone

So is this Verizon's first phone where data service stays active while on the phone? Or is this a feature that comes with hotspot?
Thunderbolt - BAMF Remix 1.5
First VZW phone that does it.
The chip they used for the CDMA radio is the first ever to allow voice and data at the same time over CDMA. Also, if you're in a 4G area, it works by keeping voice on CDMA, and of course using LTE for data.
Really? I would browse to google documents all the time while having someone on speakerphone so I could take notes...
I thought Iphone was the only smart phone that couldn't that.

if you had wifi, it would use cdma for voice and wifi for data... i used to hate those att commercials saying we couldnt because i almost always could lol
I have used it for a week, and I can tell you this: You CAN do that talk and browse the web thing at the same time on 4G AND 3G. I did it many times, and no problems. No need to jump on wifi or anything.
Shocked the hell out of one of my co-workers today doing this, since he was a die-hard AT&T fanboy and always tried to throw that up in my face, lol.
He went on to accuse me of secretly using WiFi or that it was a fake Verizon case or something.
Yeah when i read that on their website under the features I was completely sure that it would be Simultaneous voice + data ONLY in a LTE area (Like the HTC EVO and WiMax), but i was incorrect.
You can use Voice + Data while under 3G or 4G, but only if you are in an eHRPD area. (Settings > About > Network > Mobile Network Type) If it shows CDMA EVDO rev a or 1xRTT or whatever, you may not Call and use Data.
EDIT: Also, from what is available on the Net about eHRPD, this is the 'transition' between CDMA/EVDO and LTE.... It would be my guess that this means that anywhere eHRPD is available.... they should expect LTE in 2011. Just my two cents...

Hmmm.. I have been wondering why Verizon isnt using this feature to silence ATT fanboys, but I guess not everywhere with 3G supports it, so they dont want to really advertise the feature if it doesnt work everywhere.
They are most likely trying to perfect their system, as there are probably bugs (not that have seen) they would like to squash out - before going out to squash at&t.
Although i do laugh when i see that at&t commercial now....

No, eHRPD has more to do with LTE smooth handoffs than simul voice and data.

Probably cuz the iPhone doesn't use it yet?. I have only seen iphones on those att commercials doing the talk and browse thing.
I talked to a Verizon rep and asked them why all their phones didn't do this, they said something along the lines of because they wanted to keep calls on a seperate networks that way it can help stablize and keep from getting dropped calls.. Not sure how accurate that is.. I would think if they are on seperate networks then they could both be utilized..
Tbolt has two radios in it. One for voice/sms and slow data, the other for 3g/4g. That is why you can browse and talk at the same time (as long as you're in 3G or LTE area).

[Q] Is this a known issue? Hotspot slower when talking on phone

Notice when I am talking on the phone while running wifi hotspot, speeds are very slow. Is there a fix? I am using wifi hotspot and not usb tether.
Well I know that LTE doesn't work while on call so i would assume its just going down to h+

Known att issue, they throttle your speeds when on a phone call. Test it out on hspa+.

I'm not sure its even going down to Hspa+ because its just way to slow, nothing loads. I tried speedtest.net and was getting like edge speeds probably even worse.
I remember talking on the phone once and checking the data network type in about phone and it said UMTS (first 3G tech, about 365kbps max). i guess AT&T uses HSPA for voice and UMTS for data while on a call? idk.

Yea you are right, I just checked in About Phone and it goes back and forth between HSDPA and UTMS. That sucks. Would love to browse while talking on the phone. Pages are loading way too slow.
AT&T throttles your phone and also bring it down to UMTS to save battery while in call, if you haven't noticed, it sucks tremendous amounts of battery to talk on the phone and keeping the phone at it's max speeds will just eat the battery dry!

It was found some time ago that AT&T startled throttling speeds during calls.
http://thesmartphonechamp.com/att-secretly-throttling-their-smartphone-customers-video/
That would explain why recently I was on a call and I tried to look up something and nothing was coming up on my browser. That's BS. Remember all those old AT&T ads claiming, "Only on OUR network can you talk and browse the web on your iPhone?" I'm tired of being nickle and dimed by these damn guys..

Well it is true, only on AT&T can you talk and browse at the same time on an iPhone. They aren't saying you can browse very well, just that you can. I came from a 9700 Blackberry so UMTS was my day to day and I know the headache.

Apparently the PQ supports simultaneous CDMA voice and Data

I download the Google offiine maps for the cities I go as on previous CDMA phones we can't get simultaneous voice and data. However, I'd noticed on a call the other day that I was getting data updates (as indicated by the arrows) as I was driving around.
I was locked into CDMA-only to save battery (we have some unannounced LTE coverage here in Silicon Valley, but in very limited areas) so I guess this means this chipset supports the simultaneous Voice/Data Revision of CDMA (then again, my CDMA is showing up as eHRPD in this market, so maybe it's a remnant of the ongoing LTE transition?).
I am in Rochester, NY....no NV here at all and I do get 3G while talking (EvDo-rev.A:8)...This phone supports SVDO which is what gives you V+D...please feel free to correct me but this is what I have understood.

Ah, thank you.
I really liked my PQ stock- it was lag-free and solid- but now that it's been rooted and I see little things like this, I'm so over not having an (easily-)replaceable battery nor a useful GSM radio. Excellent handset.
This is a nice little bonus feature on some CDMA handsets with Qualcomm SoCs and radios. Qualcomm licenses the CDMA 2000 standard so they maintain exclusivity on stuff like this and the Evo LTE's HD Voice.

Yea, that's assuming you're ON LTE.
This thread is discussing whether or not it works across EVDO/CDMA, which evidently it does... I'm curious as well, will test today. Sprint doesn't have any plans to put LTE in my city (or state) yet Puerto Rico is evidently getting the entire island covered this year.... Sigh.
Edit - I was NOT on wifi, and I was still able to transfer data over 3g while on a call. Very cool!!

LTE not sticking..

Has anyone notice when you make a call, it switches from LTE to H or drops data even when receiving?? I've noticed it for a week now.. Even on a replacement phone. Thanks.

LTE is NOT a voice protocol. Your phone MUST switch out of LTE when receiving or placing a voice call. LTE is for data only.
There are some exceptions, but afaik, most carriers simply switch you out of LTE to place a voice call. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LTE_(telecommunication)#Voice_calls

Data while on a phone call

Tmobile customer here and wondering why when I take a call does my signal go from lte blazing speeds to H signal and 10 x's slower data speeds,is this a Tmobile thing or a Nexus thing?thanks
It's an everything thing. When ever you take a call data drops from lte to h. That's why they're development volte.

Which carrier? It may be VoLTE. Or the iP6 may come with dual radios. Keep in mind the N5 only has a single radio, so if you get a call it downgrades to H. Most carriers use an implementation of VoLTE that doesn't work with the N5. H+ is going to be slower than LTE and you may be in an area that they may not have DC-HSPA but just HSPA because of the amount of spectrum. Plus you have to have the overhead of transferring the voice over data.
You could always forward your calls to Google Voice and use Hangouts. Just sayin.
