Hey everyone,
I just received my Samsung Captivate today and i'm very excited.
I've been reading and i'm still on the fence on if i should install Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2
I'm looking at the Cognition app to start off with.
Any opinions would be great
Thanks
Gingerbread :-D
tapatalked from my SUpersonic.
Eclair is the stock app, and is already installed on Captivate. Since you bought you phone today, it should be already updated to the latest 2.1 JF7 update.
I'd recommend to install Froyo. There are some good upgrades in that, esp w.r.t to the gmail app and the shortcuts available in the notifications bar. Also, I could notice my phone faster on Froyo.
Your best bet is any of the FroYo i9000 ROMs.
Sent from my Captivate.
I went with the Cognition ROM 2.2 Froyo.
I will do some reading on those 9000 and once i get enough info i'll jump ship if needed
i think everyone would agree 2.2 over 2.1
2.2 anyday...
cog 2.3b4....awesome! ! !

I've read the sticky "[HOW TO] Galaxy S I9000 ROMs (Eclair & Froyo) on Captivate" and it seems like they're talking about the Eclair 2.1 release most of the way through. Does Froyo work for the Captivate in any way? If so, then does it have any problems that cannot, as of yet, be fixed? Also, how do I do it? I'm new to all of this and want to make sure I don't end up with a bricked device. I'm not scared to do it though, and will benefit from all the improvements 2.2 has to offer (in addition to rooting it and the lag fix and what not). Thanks for your replies!
I havent seen anything stating froyo was running anywhere for the phone.
There are pre pre pre pre pre release versions of froyo out for the I9000 which is mostly compatible with the captivate. These current froyo firmwares are unstable at best and don't really yield any benefit over sticking with eclair for now =P
It can, but not well. The errors are stated on the front of that thread you linked towards the end of the first post.
Speaking of froyo, I came over from vzw(still have them as well) but haven't seen any mention and would Like to know the answer to this, when is the captivate slated to get froyo? I would like an easy answer and not to get flamed. Thanks n advance

Officially September (in corporate time probably November)
Unofficial ROMS will probably pop up in September also we have to port most of them over
It's not CONFIRMED, but a few have "inside sources" saying that there will be a release sometime in September.

No one knows for sure. Possible rumor for the end of September. That is just a rumor because Samsung tweeted about a GPS fix at that time. Now in no way am I suggesting it is coming out during that time.
Shouldn't this really belong in "General"?
That way people can maybe keep this forum for DEVELOPMENT only.
Thanks for the answer guys. Just curious. I read somewhere that the new JiT in froyo was optimized for snapdragon and I actually believe this because the new Droid 2 with the to omap that we all know is a MUch better processor only score 12-14 in linpack. That doesn't make sense. And my Droid x with stock eclair will score as high as ID with froyo on all benchmarks. Hope we aren't n for the same disappointment that was froyo on d2

When I first got my Captivate, I was excited by all that Froyo would bring. But now I've got my Captivate running JH7 with SRE (and shortly with VooDoo), and loaded with all the apps I like.
When Froyo comes out, some of my apps won't work until there are new releases, and some of the tweaks I'm getting (SRE and VooDoo etc.) will be gone, at least initially. Plus, AT&T's control I'm sure will be tighter as they removed stuff they initially forgot (like how tethered 'disappeared' from JF6 to JH3+).
So, I'm debating if I should still be excited by Froyo. I'm sure I'll back up my current 'happy place' config/ROM and give Froyo a shot, and maybe I'll keep it. Maybe not.
Just wondering if anyone else is likewise cooling on Froyo now that we have so many DEV patches/ROMs/enhancements.
New technology is always gonna come with some growing pains
Remember we'll be able to use our full ram, try out flash with jit compiler, and then the mass developing of custom roms with take hold.
And omg app2sd comes with froyo. I had my htc aria running with froyo and it is the only thing I miss.

SRE v.2B6 w/Voodoo LagFix - JH7
the question is WHEEENNNNNN!!!!
September 23rd
Is Froyo worth getting excited about still? Umm... YES! Seriously, I've used it extensivly at work on a Nexus One and Evo. The browser just screams! There are times when I forget its a mobile browser - its that fast.
Do you think the Cappy is fast now? Just wait. Menu animations, transitions, general UI snappy-ness is much improved. Plus, native apps2sd and other little enhancements are great.
My favorite feature is "Chrome to Phone" support. https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/oadboiipflhobonjjffjbfekfjcgkhco
Its so cool! So, yeah, I'm still excited at least.
do you think a new os is gonna stop designgears from releasing a new sre? jh7 is good but if its an indication of what's to come in froyo then I'm excited. I doubt we will see the level of improvement that snapdragon phones see but a few features will be worth the update.
I personally will wait for the voodoo lagfix to have an overclock froyo kernel to upgrade. and I'm sure that won't take long, I mean how different can froyo be? I'm sure many system files are in the same location and function the same way.

I'm a vibrant owner with a simple question: How noticeable is the speed increase from the leaked froyo build over 2.1?
I'm finding day to day tasks to be slower... JI6 isn't a final build.
That may be because I'm so used to Voodoo on the 2.1 builds, though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
To answer your question directly, it'll be slow (if you'll be using the leaked Froyo). However, the Cognition v2.2 beta 6 (a well-cooked ROM on Froyo) is faster than the leaked Froyo. It's just done right.
Can't find it now, but pocket now did a video with a bench of stock 2.1, leaked 2.2, cog 2.2, lag fix, and g2 on stock 2.2. Said leaked and cog got bout the same, 900. Lagfix doubled it to 1800.
Normally not a fan of pn's android vids, but this one was done by the guy who knows what he's talking about. I know not to use quadrant as a standard on our phones, and so does he. He just does em cause everybody wants to see it.
From a phone on an app
Gotta agree! It seems real stable and very fast.
.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App running on Cognition 2.2 beta 6.
I'm running cognition 2.2 beta 7 and it is much smoother than the stock 2.1 but I never used the lagfix.
same here....its much better, faster and snappier!!
I was running stock 2.1 and recently updated to Cog 2.2B7 and WOW! What an amazing difference. It's so fast and smooth...I haven't found anything on it yet that would cause me to go back to 2.1.
With all the discussion about IcS next week I think it will be interesting to ask here. Will Verizon ever give us it officially and what dev will give us the first functional port?
Sent from my Cyanogen Thunderbolt.
Will HTC/VZW give it to us? Absolutely not. We barely got Gingerbread..technically speaking we haven't even received an official GB yet as the OTA was pulled back. However, I am very excited for CyanogenMod as the Thunderbolt will most likely receive ICS this way. I've been on Sense since the beginning but will def be moving over to Cyanogen once ICS is released.
i'm willing to bet that TeamBamf will have a mod of ICS as well.
Yea thats what I was thinking. Verizon will leave us out in the wind and BAMF or some Cyanogen build will be the first. How long are you guys thinking? My eris had Froyo within a few hours of the source being released. I'm hoping with some of our wonderful devs we can see timing like that again that was awesome.
Rarely, if ever, does an Android phone get more than one version upgrade from the manufacturer.
Bye bye thunderbolt I will be getting the prime....lol we had official gb for two days
Okay couple things... Hell no VZW HTC don't care about bolt anymore... Like someone said, we haven't even gotten our hands on official gingerbread... They broke yet another ota.
Devs will get ICS, seems like some parts of ICS would need a "dual-core" but i don't really think that that is anything more than a stigma

Agreed wired, but maybe we will get lucky like we did on the og incredible. Froyo upgrade and gingerbread. Could happen! (although not likely)
I know that teh Haxxor said that he should have ICS built into his ROM by the end of the year. With how much this update is adding I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

4G and single core will keep all those dreams of OTA from coming true.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
Android phones are suppose to get updates for 18 months from release. I should hope we get the update although god knows they will take their sweet time.
Eh Not Really Worried. I'm sure Cyanogen will get it done. Hopefully before i move onto the Vigor

Really?
HTC G1: Android 1.0? > Cupcake > Donut.
HTC Evo 4G: Eclair > Froyo> Gingerbread.
HTC MyTouch 3G: Cupcake > Donut> Eclair.
Motorola Droid: Eclair 2.0 > Eclair 2.0.1 > Eclair 2.1 > Froyo
Motorola Droid X: Eclair > Froyo > Gingerbread.
Droid Incredible: Eclair > Froyo > Gingerbread.
Samsung Fascinate: Eclair > Froyo > Gingerbread.
I am sure there are more.

If that were the case Kyocera would have to update the Zio since it's only 13 months old...
Google would like manufacturers to update up to 18 months, but some phones are simply forgotten. My phone has only had 1 firmware update since it's release. Donut 1.6 > Froyo 2.2.1

Yes, maybe patch/bug updates for 18 months. Nothing says they have to do full version upgrades.
The new liquid smooth rom has ics on it. You just have to switch to it from the liquid settings.

That's just a launcher that mimics ICS made by syndicate apps on liquids thunderbread rom.

The OG Droid came with 2.0 and they got 2.1 and 2.2.
well first HTC has to make a custom version of it.. then verizon has to load it up with all the bloat.. so it would most likely take a long time if it ever does happen
Root and CM8 should do the trick.
Hey guys, just an inquiry..
Going back through the rom list for the Samsung Captivate, I'm finding more and more that the roms I used back in the day "Cognition, Perception, Darky's, Doc's Rom" etc were all... of a better quality than those that are produced now. (Nearly two years later).
I find most of what's done now a cut-and-paste, or a bunch of random sh!t thrown together with a pretty bow, until two days later you've got framework fc's out the ying-yang.
I'm running Miui Scotland's rom right now.. but I really want to go back to Froyo. For a few reasons... too many to mention.
My question is, does anyone have the latest version of the Perception rom, and a link to it? Or any of the other oldies but goodies?
Only old rom I can find is SensatioN by Icezar... that's it.
Thanks for anyone who can help
Thanks,

You can also get Phoenix, There is a link at the last page or 2 of the thread. If it's dead let me know I have a copy
I'm going to reflash Serenity 6.3 for lack of a better option.
There's a link on the last page of the thread; if that fails, I have a copy as well.

I'm still running Serendipity 6.4 (Froyo). On any of the GB roms i tried the NHL GameCenter app would have choppy video but with Froyo its always smooth. With the JL2 modem set to 850mhz only i get between 4.5 - 6.0 down and 1 up
I had a spare Captivate that I would try different roms on but my son is using it on Straight Talk.
I miss running Serendipity. Ran it from version 1 to 7. MikeyMike01 should get back into development and compile an ICS ROM.

Serendipity gets my recommendation, too. Here is a link to the site with downloads: ---
Hmm, I'm too new of a poster to provide links. If you Google for "serendipityrom" and "weebly" it should be your first link.

Even Samsung replaced Froyo with GB! You should listen to your manufacturer!
But in all seriousness - you should check stock GB.

The only reasons i stayed with froyo was the video in the NHL gamecenter app would be choppy with a GB rom (tried many) but smooth with froyo. Also the data speed was alot faster than GB.
Pinnacle of GB ROM IMO.

Agreed. Serendipity was my first ROM to flash and no other GB ROM compares in my opinion. Everything was so smooth on 7, and the kitchen was a nice touch as well.
